Transferring settings from old Mac o new iMac
Hi! I just placed an order for a new iMac on the Apple store. Currently I sync my iPhone, iPad and iPods with my PowerBook G4. Once the new Mac arrives I plan to sync my iOS devices with it, I understand that there is a migration or setup assistant that will transfer all my settings from the old Mac to the new one.
Are there any tips or special precautions I must take? Should I use a USB cable, Firewire or use wi-fi?
Thanks,
Cesar
PB G4 17" 1.33 Ghz Mac OS X (10.5.8) iPhone 3GS 16GB (iOS 4.2.1) iPad 32GB wifi+3G (iOS 4.2.1)
You can use an ethernet cable, a FireWire cable if your laptop has a FireWire port or a wireless network. In your case the ethernet is probably the easiest because even if your laptop has FW it is likely to be FW400 and the new iMac has FW800, so you would need an adapter or adapting cable.
You may wish to read up on the precautions for going from PowerPC to Intel Macs.

you may be lucky, but you should expect problems if you do that.
you should properly install your adobe software using the adobe installation files.

I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi

Transferring music from old Mac to new ipad
How do I transfer already purchased iTunes items from an old MacBook to my new ipad air? Seems like the technology of old Mac and new ipad air don't speak to each other. I tried to download from iTunes but none of the music from the old system downloads. Can someone suggest how I can move them?
Upgrade the computer to at least Mac OS X 10.6.8 and then sync the iPad Air normally.

Having trouble transferring music from old PowerBook to new iMac
I'm having trouble transferring my iTunes music from my old PowerBook to my new iMac. Trying to follow the online instructions by using an external hard drive to transfer from one to another.
Hi Skingz,
Welcome to the Support Communities!
Is the external hard drive that you are working with formatted for Mac OS Extended Journaled? Is there enough space on it?
The process is the same regardless of the operating system you are using:
OS X Mountain Lion: View information about your disk
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11086
Formatting erases the contents of the external drive so be cautious. Also this process is for any application, not just Aperture:
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

Try the steps in the article again.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
If you are still not able to copy the library to your new computer this way, then the alternative approach would be to copy the music folder from your old computer to the external drive, and then add the music folder to your new, empty iTunes library on the iMac. You'll have to recreate your playlists, etc, but at least you will have the music.
Adding music and other content to iTunes

I hope this information helps ....
Have a great day!

Transfering itunes from old emac to new imac
I recently upgraded to a new imac. I transfered my files however it would not let me transfer my itunes, i believe because it was an older version. I was able to transfer the music, however my playlist are gone, shopping cart, and purchased music etc. I am not sure how to transfer the old into to the new computer. I am also concerned about connecting my ipod to the new computer because I am afraid that it will delete the whole ipod. Any suggestions?
thanksWELL... I finished the whole transfer last night... It actually didn't take that long (definitely not as long as the iphoto transfer took)... since the new computer is so fast. You actually don't need to download the songs again... they are there... in your old itunes folder... you just need to drag them into the new itunes application...
I lost all my playlists, which is bad, but I can live with it. it will give me a chance to go over some songs again, BUT the only thing that could not be recovered is album artwork from the songs I had purchased in Emusic.... And that was a lot of songs with great album graphics.... Somehow, itunes knows how to retrieve the art for songs purchased from itunes only...
Anyway, I agree that there should have been a better way, much less painful to do this.... but your songs should still be there... And IF I'M NOT WRONG, after you imported them to the new itunes, they are stored again, and you can erase the old folder.... -
Difficulties transferring data from old PC to new iMac
I'm currently helping my neighbors set up their new iMac, 27". They own an old PC that a friend built, and it runs Windows XP. The iMac came yesterday, and I was helping them get started with it this afternoon. In order to transfer data like their iTunes library, photos, etc., I took over an Iomega external HD to use. However, the PC wouldn't detect it. I used the USB cord supplied with the drive, in several different ports on the PC. The ports do work, as an iPhone I plugged into them was detected. I then tried the supplied FireWire cable, no dice there either. No recognition on the PC whatsoever.
So I went back to my house and got my other hard drive, a LaCie Starck. Plugged it in to their PC, no recognition. I formatted both drives as MS-DOS (FAT) with Disk Utility, and that did nothing.
So I went to burning DVD's. I popped one in, and proceeded to use iTunes' backup library function to burn their library to the DVD. I inserted the blank disk, and then iTunes showed that it was 'Checking media" up in the top of the application for 60 seconds or so, and then the Apple logo replaced that and nothing else happened.
I'm out of ideas here. What do I do to get this information over to the iMac? Why are my drives not being recognized? I'm quite confused.I may be able to help re. the iTunes transfer; unfortunately, I was not able to copy the article because it is a pop up, but if you will go to the Finder Help menu (on the new Mac) and type in "transfer", one of the help articles will be instructions on how to transfer iTunes music from a PC to a Mac.
And, here is a general article which may be helpful:

Transfering files from old mac to new mac
I just bought a iMac G5 and started it up and it asked if I wanted to transfer files from my old mac. I selected yes. And it began transferring. It looked like everything was going fine until I checked on it about 30 minutes later and it looked like it hadn't progressed at all. I checked on it another 30 minutes later and it said 1 hour 6 minutes remaining and hasn't moved since. I don't understand why it's not going further. And it's taking forever! Am I just too impatient. I'm transferring 5GB from my old PowerPC G4 mac using a firewire cable. Any help is much appreciated. I have no idea why it's not working.
A couple of other things to consider Emille,
1. Make sure your data is really going through the firewire cable and not a wireless network. Going through an ethernet or firewire cable would be much faster. It may have been possible that even though you had a cable connected, It may have tried to do it wirelessly anyway.
2. Were either of them going to sleep?
3. Make sure no other firewire devices are plugged in.

Transferring library from old mac to new mac
My friend just got a new iMac and I'm going over there to help him set it up and transfer all his stuff from his old G4. What's the best most reliable way to transfer the iPhoto library and photos from an old G4 to a new iMac? Will putting the G4 in Firewrie Target mode and dragging the library and photos over to the new iMac work? I'm worried that all paths to the photos will be lost.
G4
Tiger 10.4.10
iPhoto 5.0.4
iMac
Most recent versions of Leopard and iPhoto
Thank you for any help.
Message was edited by: wurliuchiYes, put the old Mac into FireWire Target Mode and then simply drag the Library from the Pictures Folder on the Old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new one. Then Launch iPhoto. That’s it. Iphoto will update the Library. Note: *There is no importing involved!*

Transferring music from old mac to new mac
I just bought a new Macbook Pro and am trying to transfer my music from me new computer to my old computer...what is the easiest way to do this?
Do you have a time machine backup from the old Mac? If so, you can do that and ALL your data that way. Very, very easy....
See:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
and scroll on that link to this section:
Restoring a Time Machine backup on a new Mac
When you buy a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made.
You will be asked if you want to transfer files when you start up your new Mac for the first time. Or, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities).
If you use a Time Capsule, see Restoring files from a Time Capsule backup. -
Transferring Files from old Mac to New Mac and size is different.
So I have a MBP 13 and I want to move the Documents folder to my new MBA. I popped in a USB drive and just dragged my Documents folder to the USB Drive. It registered right around 4gb with something like 17,000 items.
So when I put the USB in the MBA it still says 4gb with the same amount of files. But when I copy them all it only shows 430 files and something like 500mb.
So I tried as the Root User. When I went it as root, it said it was copying the full 4gb and the 17k items. But when I logged in as the admin and not the Root user it still said the smaller #'s.
Is there a reason for this? It seems like maybe something was copied when I just dragged the Documents folder to the USB. Are there some account specific hidden files or settings or something when I do it that way? I supppose I could just open the docs, select all, and copy that way, but I would like to figure out what is going on here.
TIA
SteveHave you got access to an external drive that is large enough to hold your entire iTunes folder including the iTunes Music folder? Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them. Attach an external drive and copy over your iTunes folder. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers. -
How can I get music from old mac to new mac?
How can I get music from old mac to new mac please?
Can't seem to make Migration Assistant work. Doesn't ask about or transfer files.I just migrated into a new MBP from an old one.
It did not bring the music over. Apple's instructions are to use the Home Sharing feature of iTunes.
Open iTunes on your old Mac. Select Home Sharing under the Advanced menu. Sign in. Do the same on your new computer. Then when the library appears under Home Sharing on the left-hand panel on your new computer's iTunes, you can select all and Add To Library.
That's what Apple says, anyway. -

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. I get an error when I try to launch a program on the new computer (150:30). After contacting live chat about the issue and providing all serial numbers etc. I was directed to a download. The download was a .dmg file that my computer did not recognize. It was suggested that I ask the experts on the forum how to resolve the issue. I have all the discs and serial numbers but the new macbook pro doesn't take discs (I guess they think all apps are downloadable now). Any ideas?
Hmm... I don't know why they sent you here... CS4 is not part of the Cloud
I have some download links for earlier versions of Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements, but not CS4 Web
My best idea is to take a LARGE USB memory stick to a friend with a DVD drive and copy your DVD over to the USB memory stick
Or, ask in the forum for your program(s) to find out if anyone has CS4 download links
If you start at the Forums Index https://forums.adobe.com/welcome
You will be able to select a forum for the specific Adobe product(s) you use

When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, all my songs were copied over, but not all of them were stored in iTunes. It appears they are on the computer somewhere, but not on iTunes. Where are these other songs likely to be, and how can I get them onto iTunes? Because of this problem, Apple will not allow me to update my iPhone.
You may/must have had music files stored outside of your iTunes library.
I'd recommend going to the Finder and then via the search box look for files with mp3 aif m4a aac etc. depending on the music format your digital music had. With the list of files shown you should be able to learn which files were stored outside of your music > itunes folder
Chances are they could be burried somewhere under your documents, downloads, desktop, ... we all have different storage and organization habits.
Then when you find the missing files, on the new computer you can do add to library and go to the folder on the other computer where the missing files are - if your systems are networked - or sneak them over using a USB thumb drive or portable hard drive if you have lots of files, or if you like to have an extra backup of that music, copy to optical disc.
