Transferring songs from hard drive to new iPod
Will I have trouble transferring my songs from an external hard drive to a new iPod classic. If so, any solutions?
As long as you import these songs from the external hard drive to iTunes first, you shouldn't. Just make sure your iPod is configured to sync all of these new tracks via its Summary and specifically Music configuration tabs in iTunes.

If your computer can't read what's on the iPod hard drive, you're out of luck. -
Transferring music from hard drive to new macbook
So here is my situation I can't seem to figure out.
On my old imac, I kept all of my music on an external hard drive.
Now that I have a new macbook pro, I would like to transfer the libary on to the itunes, while keeping it on the external hard drive.
When I go to do that, it won't reference the folder I have all my albums in because it says it is not a valid itunes library file.
Please help!
Thanks! So your media are on the external drive and your library files are on the internal? iTunes is a bunch of files, not just your media files.

If your library files are on your internal drive you need to copy the iTunes folder from Home > Music to the same location on the new computer (make sure you don't mind replacing the one already there), then start iTunes. It may want to update your main library file.
If instead of what you say, the whole iTunes library is on the external drive:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder. -

Deleting songs from Hard Drive
If I delete songs from my hard drive, will that then delete them from my Ipod next time it syncs?
Yes... Your iPod will only sync what is in your iTunes Library. Your iPod will automatically delete any songs that are not on your computer the next time it syncs. However if when you connect your iPod to your computer it comes up on the summary tab. On that tab you can choose to manually manage music & videos. Then you can put what you want on your iPod. It will only add or remove music/videos when you tell it to do so.... Hope this helps.
Thanks,

How remove files from hard drive, retain on iPod?
Does all music have to be permanently stored on my computer, to have it on my iPod?
I have purchased CDs in the past, I still have the CDs and they work fine. I have imported them into iTunes, synched them to my iPod. That all works.
Question: I want to save space on my computer, it's a laptop. I want to delete some of the music files from my laptop hard drive and keep the songs on my iPod. Can someone tell me how to do this?
I have a 45 Gig hard drive in my Powerbook and a 30 G iPod. I don't want music files to permanently take up half the space or more on my Powerbook hard drive.
What can I do?
thank you,
BillIf you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos" (this setting isn't available for an iPod shuffle, you can't delete from iTunes and keep the songs on the shuffle). The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different, you can get details here:
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
iPod - Syncing Music
One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD or an external drive:
How to back up your media in iTunes
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod -
Delete Dialogue not appearing... can't delete songs from hard-drive
After downloading ver 7.0.2 I can't delete songs from my hard-drive by deleting them in iTunes.
There's supposed to be a dialogue(sp?) box that shows up when you delete a song in the main library (not in playlists), that asks you if you want to permanantly delete a file (song, movie, etc), or if you only want to delete it from the iTunes list.
It's not showing up for me, so I have to seek out the folder and delete the song manually in Windows.
I'd get this problem occasionaly in the older versions, but usually a restart of the program, or in worse cases, rebooting the computer would solve the problem, but not this time.
I've tried re-installing the program, but no luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks.I tried the following fix, and it didn't work..
Is anyone else having this problem after upgrading to 7.0.2?
I'm sure I didn't check the box in the delete dialog that says "do not show this again"
I've also tried hitting the shift key when deleting.. still no luck.
HELP!!
Resetting the iTunes Preference Files:
-- Quit iTunes
-- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
-- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
You may need to enable 'Show Hidden Files/Folders' in Windows Explorer==>Tools menu==>Folder Options==>’View’ tab before you can see the Application Data & Local Settings folders.
This will force iTunes to run the setup assistance the next time you open it. You'll have to go back and re-set any preferences you want changed from the iTunes default. When you restart iTunes, it will perform its initial startup process. Do not let iTunes search for your music files. The old library is still there and iTunes will see it after it gets past the initial dialog screens. -
Hi there,
I spilled beer on an older macbook and it was too pricey to repair. I had the Apple store save all files and information from the harddrive to an external hard drive. I moved all the files and information onto a refurbished macbook. The refurbished macbook does not have ilife, particularly iphoto. All of the photos that I had in iphoto on the old computer are gone. Are they still available someplace? How do I get to them? If I can not access them on my new computer without iphoto can I exchange the old hard drive for the new one? Thank you very much.
eThe iPhoto library that was on the hard drive of the damaged Macbook will still be there.
I suggest you take the hard drive out of the dead MB and install it in an inexpensive external enclosure. Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC
Once you have the drive in the enclosure you can connect it to your new Mac, install iPhoto on the new Mac, and access the library. This step can be tricky, so post back when you are ready. -
How to restore MobileSync Backup from Hard Drive to new iTunes?
I am in serious need of help!
My laptop which had Windows 7 running was crashing down after 4 years. When I brought it to the service center they took my internal drive out to save all the data before too late.
The problem is I never had the chance to backup my iTunes properly, and now that I'm usiing a new computer, how can I possibly retrieve all the old data?
The internal drive from the older computer has now been made into a hard drive. I just downloaded the same version of iTunes I was using on this new computer, but how can I possibly restore my older iTunes library. I don't care very much about the music actually, but the mobilesync backup, like messages, notes and etc.
