Transferring songs to new computer

Our desktop computer is very sick and I am attempting to set up my son's iPod on our laptop. Two questions: 1-Are you able to do this? 2-If so, how do you do this without losing all of the songs and how do you transfer songs to new computer?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved also it was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back

Transferred songs but new computer can't find file

I transferred my music library with my mini to a new computer but now the new computer says it cannot find my any of my songs because "the original file cannot be found". And yet it looks like it transferred, the new library has all 609 songs. Any thoughts on how to get this opened up.

Help transfering songs to new computer

I have I tunes on my old computer and want to transfer the songs using a travel drive. How do I do that? My old computer is windows 2000, no cd burner, and is not compatible with my I pod. It also has the old version of I tunes. Help please. Thanks

Choose Consolidate Library from iTunes on the old computer, copy the iTunes folder(not just iTunes Music) to the external drive or create a network between the computers, put that folder on the new computer, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it to that library.

Computer Crash, transfering songs to new computer

hi, my computer has recently died, so i have purchased a new computer but i don't know how to transfer my songs from my ipod to the new computer. i don't have a backup of my itunes libary. all i have is my ipod. I'm afraide to pug it in to the new computer beacuse i have heard it will erase your ipod... is there anytype of softwere i can buy or anything i can do?
how do you e-mail itunes support? would they be able to let me re-downloadod all of my purchased songs?

You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I recently purchased a new computer, and I was wondering how to completely transfer my library from my previous comuputer.

Well, there are a number of ways.
1. You can use an external Hard Drive, or Flash Drive. You will simply find the folder on your computer with all of the music, drag it onto the external whatever drive, then plug it into the new computer.
2. There is a specific cable that you can use to connect the computers. I forget what it is called, but if you visit like a Radio Shack or something like that they will help you.
3. You can burn a CD or DVD(preferrably, as it holds much more data) (or multiple, depending how large your library is) for your music, then put that into the new computer. You will put the blank disk into your DVD or CD or whatever it is drive and open iTunes. Then, make a playlist that is small enough to fit on one DVD or CD. Go to this playlist and Click Burn Disk (top right of the iTunes screen).

I'm trying to transfer whats is on my ipod to my new computer. I didn't back any of it up (like an idiot) and the "Transfer Purchases" option does nothing. Most of what is on my ipod is from old cd's. My old computer is dead. Please tell me there is another way.

Okay, so I have an ipod with about 350 songs on it. The computer and the itunes on that computer that contained those songs crashed, and thus is no longer avaliable for use. So, is there any way to update my ipod with the songs in my new library without having it delete the older songs on my ipod from my older library?

Transferred Itunes to New Computer but Now cant play any songs?

Can anybody help? I transfered my itunes library using the ipod as a hard drive to my new computer. Great! Everything is there, playlists still the same etc! Just when I thought "wow that was easy" I tried to play a song from new computer and it came up with a message about how the original file/format is not on that computer so it couldnt play it? Im not sure what to do now?
If you do what itunes suggest and download your entire library to CD etc this will take forever not to mention the amount of CDs! I think this is a stupid suggestion as well because you might as well go through all your actual CDS and just upload them again to your new computer. Surely there must be a cable or something I could use?

I followed the instuctions which said to locate my itunes folder and the drag the folder from my docs over to my ipod which was shown in my computer/external devices. This took some time.
I then downloaded itunes onto my new computer and plugged the ipod into my new computer. I dragged the itunes library file from the ipod (which was a large file so definately the one that had all the songs it) It took about 20/30 minutes to transfer all the songs from the ipod onto the itunes library on my new computer. Everything looked fine and then I tried to click on a song and it told me "The song could not be be used because the orignal file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Having said yes to locating the file it brings up my folder options... I select the itunes library once again because this is where it would be located but then nothing happens?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.

I am wanting to transfer my Adobe CS3 suite to my new Macbook Pro. I'm worried about not being able to access my design files correctly once transferring to my new computer. I'm also interested in upgrading to the latest CS6. Any advice would be appreciated!

To install your CS3 Suite, don't try to copy the application files. If possible, use the installer discs or a copy of the installer file you original used to install on your old computer. If you don't have the original discs/installer file, you can download the installer here:

As to buying the latest CS6, you can do that from the Adobe Store.

Loading songs from new computer

Old laptop screen broke. Bought new computer. Bought new songs on new computer. Once shuffle connects, Store wants to wipe off all songs on shuffle before loading new songs. Is it at all possible to transfer songs from old LT, through external drive, on to new LT, then load on to shuffle. Have I lost all of my $$$?

Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.
