Transferring / sync to a new computer
My old computer died, and I can not get the songs on my nano to download into Itunes on my new computer, how do you get them to download?
iTunes syncing is generally in one direction, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod. You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store. However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links. (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.

I no longer have access to the computer to which my iPod touch is synced. Can I de-sync it without accessing said computer and set up a sync with my new computer without losing all my purchases?
You can transfer Itunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
You can transfer other stuff with the info provided in this previous discussion:
Best iPod to PC
You can also redownload apps at no additional cost:
How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store
Once you get the stuff in the iTunes library of you new computer let iTunes erase your iPod and replace its contents with what is now in your iTunes library. -
Wow my computer has died all my music, pics and vids are on my Ipod touch. But it is synced to the dead computer. In order to sync with the new computer it is going to delete all my stuff on my Ipod. Is there a way arround this so can restore my library to my new computer.
- Transfer iTunes purchased items by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
- For other items you need a third-party program like one of thos discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
The good ones are paid. And to do more than music, like synced photos, usually cost. There is also:
TouchCopy
Phoneview
iPhone Explorer
- After you transfer all the stuff, connect the iPod to the computer and right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes an select Back Up.
- Restore the iPod from that backup. -
Am I able to sync to a new computer without losing iPhone backup?
My situation: My old computer crashed, and now I have a new computer with iTunes, but my phone is not synced with it. I have transferred all of my purchases to it. And I used the "Back up" option available in iTunes when the phone is connected.
My question: Am I able to re-sync to this new computer without losing all the things saved in a back-up, such as contacts, calendars, notes, text messages, and settings? I don't care about the music, photos, etc..
My original plan was to back it up, by right clicking it in the iTunes left panel, then sync it, then restore from back up. But I am not sure whether I will be able to restore from back-up after I resync it and erase everthing.
Can anybody help with this issue? Step by steps are helpful
Thanks,
BlairPLEASE HELP! So to reiterate, when I go to sync my iPhone tothis new iTunes library I get the message:
“The iPhone “XXXX” is synced withanother iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with thisiTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing andsyncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTuneslibrary.”
So will I be able to sync it like this and then restore my contacts, calendars, notes, text messages, and settings that backed up by right clickingthe iPhone in the iTunes panel? I just can’t afford to lose that data.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks -
How do I sync with a new computer without losing everything?
I no longer have access to the computer I originally synced my iPhone with. I want to sync it with a new computer and back everything up without losing anything. How do I do that? Please help!
Using the information below you can transfer content to your new computer. Thiis will at least update the content to have what is on your phone but you will still be syncing with a new iTunes library. It will replace your content but hopefully you can make the replaced content match your existing content.
Make a backup of your computer always. This is the digital age and it is all too easy to lose music and photos in an instant.
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

When trying to sync ipod to new computer
Hello I have been trying to sync my ipod to a new computer, I found this disk method very useful
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
Now the music from my ipod is transferred to my itunes, under my music, which I m really happy about, but it is faded out, and when I try and sync, it still gives me the message "the itunes libary is synced with another itunes library.Do I want to erase and and replace with existing playlists"
Any ideas ? As I dont want to loose all of my music !!!

Transferring camera roll into new computer.
So... I got my laptop stolen and decided to get a new one. The thing is that I can't seem to download the Photo Library pictures from my old computer that are stored in my iphone, into the new laptop... is there anyway i can do that?
Thanks!
J.Photos captured by your iPhone and a photo saved from a received email, from a website, or from a received MMS are stored in your iPhone's Camera Roll. Photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
The title of your post is "Transferring camera roll into new computer" which you aren't asking about. You are asking about importing or transferring photos from your iPhone's Photo Library, which is completely separate from and has nothing to do with the Camera Roll.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process are stored in your iPhone's Photo Library, which is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone. Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes transfer process - the original resolution of these photos is reduced on your iPhone.
Photos stored on your computer should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data - stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only which should be kept in a separate location from your laptop in the event it is lost or stolen. The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device.
There are some 3rd party paid utilities that provide for transferring these photos in the opposite direction, but such utilities are not supported by Apple and the original resolution of these photos will be lost in the process. -

How to sync iPad to new computer/macbook maintaining game data
Hi,
my wife is using an iPad (1)
Sofar she has synchronized with iTunes on a windows machine.
Right now I want to move to iTunes on a new macbook.
I have synced on the old (windows) computer.
I have 'transferred purchases' on the new macbook.
(Apple id's are the same)
All apps are now on the iPad and the macbook.
Now we need to sync the iPad and iTunes on the macbook.
Question: what will happen with all game data.
Apparantly all apps (250 games!) will be removed and replaced from /on the iPad.
But what will happen to to game data/status?
Will all the work in (e.g.) the 'Smurf city' be wiped out?
Is the a way to keep/remain/save the game data?
thx in advance for your tips and hintsYou want to restore from the backup in order to restore the app data and game saves.
I have posted this a number of times. You have done some of this already, but this is a "start from scratch" list ofinstructions for syncing with a new computer. Anything that does not apply - like transferring music or photos at the end - just ignore.
1. Authorize the computer.
2. Turn off auto sync in iTunes
3. Transfer purchases
4. Backup the iPad
The following was copied from this thread. This is essentially what you want to accomplish.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
1) Without connecting your iPad to your new computer, start iTunes. Click on iTunes. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
2) Now connect your iPad to your computer and start iTunes.
3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your computer, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on iTunes / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
Read this thread and the support links as well. There are apps that you can purchase that will allow you to transfer photos from the iPad to your computer. Look at Photo Transfer App in the App store and you can search for others as well.

One final note - you may want to leave auto sync turned off - but that is totally up to you. I never did use auto sync. -
Syncing to a new computer - nothing happens
I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. I have transfered all my music to my new computer but when I begin to sync my iPod Classic 6 nothing happens. I am able to see my device in iTunes and have checked all the appropriate boxes. With my old computer the iPod automatically syncs, but it doesn't seem to happen with the new one. It doesn't even search for files to sync. Do I have to restore my iPod? I'm afraid to restore my iPod before I am certain that I have the right information.
Check out this user tip for steps on syncing youir iPod to a new computer. It refers to the iPhone, but it's equally valid for iPods as well…

2 questions; how to erase "other memory" on iphone 5 and how to sync to a new computer
Apple support is failing to help my issues so I thought its best to turn to the community. OK so I've talked to Apple before about my "other memory" and I performed a soft reset on my phone and it decreased other memory by maybe a gig. A month later now its higher than it was before at over 5.6 gigs, any way how to make it as little as possible?
Also I just got a new macbook pro and I use to sync my iphone 5 to my macbook (2008), how do I make my macbook pro my primary itunes and still keep all my info on my phone? My new macbook pro itunes says its backed up, but when I plug it in it won't sync any new songs or app data to my itunes, etc.
Any help with these issues will much be appreciated!!"Other" is all of the data for all of the built in apps. If you delete its contents all of your built in app data will disappear. Some of what is contained in other:
email messages and attachments
Reminders
Calendar entries
Contacts
Text messages
MMS messages and attachments
Genius data
Music cover art
Operating system settings
Safari cache
bookmarks
Game Center status
Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. Some people suggest deleting your music on the phone. DON'T DO IT! The reason that deleting music recovers some Other space is because it deletes cover art. But is also screws up your music, which will no longer play correctly.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Your Other is so large, however, that there may be corrupt data contained in it (unless you send a lot of MMS messages with large attachments). If this is the case you should restore the phone as New.

For your other question, the easiest way is to copy your iTunes library folder from the old computer to the new computer. For the hard way, see: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive -
fellow iPod classic owners,
the problem is a failure to sync with the new computer. the conditions are as follows: the new computer is a pc. it has the latest iTunes software installed. the iPod is installed properly. i'm fully recognized by my iTunes account. there is nothing lacking other than my iPod's refusal to sync with my new computer. what have i left undone? i could be suffering from a duh, but i'm not the only one. nothing in the apple world is as difficult as this one is, at least on the surface. if it were that simple an issue, no one would be having any problems with it. any more information needed can be provided by request. by the way, the computer being used has been authorized. that is a non-issue.
your help is appreciated,
hardphil.I believe the IPOD (Classic) uses USB 2.0, and my new laptop uses USB 3.0. I think they are not compatable because of this. If you find a solution to this please let me know.
Thanks, -
How do I get the sync of my 3GS on my computer to transfer everything (files, apps, etc.) to my new iphone4? And then how do I move the sync to a newer computer so I can sync the new phone with the new computer?
My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer. I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting. Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc. That's not the issue. It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.
Thanks. Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone). Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer. How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up? -
I just decomissioned my windows pc in favor of a new (to me) MacBook Pro. When I attempt to sync my iPad I get a warning that I will erase all content on the ipad in order to sync with the new computer. How do avoid erasing all the data on the iPad, and get the iPad and the new Mac/iTunes to be friends?
Best option is to use Windows Migration Assistant as Ralph noted.
Here's a better (updated) link to Windows Migration Assistant for Lion -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796
Or if you only want iTunes (Migration Assistant let's you choose) copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from your PC to /Music/ on the Mac.
FYI: A MacBook is not a PowerBook. PowerBooks were discontinued in 2005.
