Transferring tags & ratings from PSE 5 to PSE 11?

How do I transfer both the tags and the ratings (stars) from PSE 5 to PSE 11? I have years worth of pictures tagged with names and rated with stars and can't figure out how to transfer them all to PSE 11. I'm on Windows 8.

If you are moving from one computer to another ,then more details here:

If the transfer is all on one computer, then you don't need backup and restore. You just need to convert the PSE5 catalog. Open PSE11 and then File->Catalog Manager->Convert

  • Converting (transferring) tagged photos from PC to IMac

    Gentleman and Ladies if appropriate,
When I could not upgrade my Xp desktop, I decided to convert to Apple's IMac.
Since my current emphasis is not office related and more on photos, music and the web it fits nicely.
My problem. I have some 6000 photos tagged with Photoshop Elements Version 6 (people, places, events etc). I would dearly love to transfer this meta data into the I Mac where I can then use Mac's "IPhoto" to handle them and create slide shows etc.
Since I could not see a way to do this directly, I purchased the Mac version (6) of the same Adobe software (Photoshop Elements) to facilitate
the transfer. It is quite different! It uses a sub program called Bridge to sort and select photos. So I am not sure how to proceed.
My original photos were transferred over from the Dell to the Mac but I can not determine if the meta data is in place and how I should
go about transferring it. I would appreciate any help you could provide.
    Cheers,

The new Imac desktop has 4 Gb of Ram and the Dell Pentium 4 is available to re-download the photos if necessary.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
On the Windows box, use Elements to write the tags to the IPTC data of the files. Consult the help on Elements for details on how to do that, or search this forum. The question comes up from time to time. You will also get specific assistance over at the Adobe Forums
    http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/
As this is the iPhoto forum, a word of warning: Bridge and iPhoto are not compatible. You need to choose one or the other to manage your photos.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Import Labels / Tags / Ratings from Microsoft Digital Image?

I'm a new user with LOTS of pictures I've been organizing using Microsoft Digital Image. They are all tagged with labels and ratings, that it would be a REAL pain to have to redo.
Is there a way to tell Photoshop Elements 4 to import the pictures with the tags?
    Thanks!
    --Dean

    Jeffrey,
A quick Google search shows that Microsoft Digital Image and Windows XP used (incredibly) a proprietary set of metadata fields in photos:
    http://www.shahine.com/omar/WarningToYouIfYouUsedMicrosoftDigitalImageSuiteAndUpgradeToVis ta.aspx
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6074850
There are a couple of suggested solutions to get the proprietary tags into industry-standard fields that other programs understand:
    1. Use Windows Live Photo Gallery (the one you download, not Windows Photo Gallery which is builtin to Vista). WLPG understands the old proprietary format. Import your photos into WLPG, and then add a new dummy tag to your photos this will write out the tags using industry-standard fields. Not clear if this will preserve captions, ratings, and date/time.
    2. Use exiftool, a free tool that is widely recognized as the most robust tool for modifying metadata. Unfortunately, the learning curve is steep.
I havent tried these solutions, but they seem quite plausible.

  • Editing Tag Text in PSE 13

I migrated from PSE 9 to PSE 13.  I had text which described each tag.  How do I access and edit this text using PSE 13?  Using PSE 9, I right-clicked the tag and selected Edit.  All text appeared.  Using PSE 13, only the name appears for editing.

    Michael,
Thank you for responding.  Perhaps the definition of objects has changed.  Using PSE 9, I created tags within three categories:  People, Places, and Events.  For each People tag, I created Notes which defined information about that person; e.g., when and where they were born, when and where they died, who were their parents, names of their children, etc.  These tag categories and names migrated to PSE 13 correctly, but I can see nor edit any of the notes associated with them.  Where did all of that information go when I migrated to PSE 13?
In PSE 13, I can create and edit Notes associated with Categories and Sub-categories.  But they do not contain the tag information from PSE 9.  oes PSE no longer support Notes for Tags?

  • Transferring albums from PSE 8 to PSE11

How do I transfer albums from PSE 8  to PSE 11? I have transferred the catalogue, but the album settings don't appear to have come across.

I have the albums pane visible, but the individual album title does not appear, although the pictures which are in the album show as being tagged for that album!

  • Tag issue when upgrading from PSE 7 to 11

I've upgraded from PSE 7 to 11 and the tags for people, while there, do not appear in the "people" section fo PSE11. Any suggestions on how to get them all to show?

In PSE11, people tags have been moved to People view, this view contains all people tags along with categories. In case you want to view them along with tags panel, it can be enabled through View->Show People in Tag panel.

Not sure about PSE 6 but in PSE 8 under View you need to have details checked.

Thanks, the solution was simply to select from View, "show people in tag panel".

  • Using Tags in PSE 11 after converting from PSE 7?

I just loaded PSE 11 (upgrading from PSE 7) but when I click on my tags, no pictures appear.  But when I click on albums, the albums/pictures appear.  Anyone else have this problem, and a solution?  Thanks.

Thanks, that helped.  I was just clicking on the tag like in PSE 7 and didn't realize you needed to click to the right of the tag on the ">".  Appreciate your help, thanks.

  • How to import PSE tagged pictures from friends into organizer correctly?

    Hello,
my father and me have both PSE, I have version 11, he 10. When I get tagged pictures from him, the persons are normal tags after import to PSE Organizer 11 and not faces. How can I import those pictures, that I can filter later for the already included persons without repeated face detection by myself?
    Thank you
    Christian

    Hello Andaleeb,
sorry for my long delay, but I don't get so often new photos from Friends. Today I got the same problem by importing Tagged Fotos from PSE11 to an other PSE11 Catalog. Here is the reproduction:
    - Having two Catalogs: One e.g. For photos until 2009 and one for newer photos.
    - Finding some Scans in newer Catalog (>2009) with wrong date and correct the date to <2009.
    - Tag all photos in new Catalog with Persons (faces) e.g. "Christian from Laatzen"
    - Save meta data in the files (by File menu)
    - Copy Files via Drag and Drop to a folder where also other files of old catalog (<2009) are stored
    - delete files in new catalog (incl. checkbox detele also from harddisk) because the copy is in the other folder
    - open old catalog where also a person "Christian from Laatzen" is included
    - import there the fotos from the folder created above
    - Get a selection box if tags shall be imported (there the names are shown: e.g. "Christian from Laatzen")
    - Import -> Now are the persons are together with other imported tags in a Tag-category like "imported keywords" (german: "Importierte Stichwort-Tags").
Here I can filter for "Christian from Laatzen" correcty like for other tags like "Holiday". But the photos are not detected as people/faces - when I select People tab and then the stack of "Christian from Laatzen" (tagged before in old catalog <2009) the new imported photos are not shown...
Hope it helps to understand the problem. I wouldn't create a screenshot as there would be real names with first and last name of > 10 persons and I assume it would not be ok for them to find there nemed in a forum.
    Thank you very much!

  • How do I ensure that my whole catalog transfers from PSE 12 to PSE 13?

I am moving from PSE 12 to PSE 13 on my Mac (Yosemite).  PSE 13 detects my catalog, but only seems to be able to find an older version of it, so only some of my photos (the older ones) are converted to PSE 13. I know that it is only finding an older version not just because the pictures only go up to a certain date after conversion, but also because there is some function (I forget what) that lets me see what PSE 13 thinks of a catalog it is converting, and that function shows the catalog modified only as of the older date.
I downloaded updates to PSE 13 before my first conversion attempt.  After the first failure, I repaired and optimized the old catalog before attempting to convert it again.
    Thoughts?

    Michael,
Thanks, but the Catalog Manager is the function I referred to in my earlier email as "some function (I forget what) that lets me see what PSE 13 thinks of a catalog it is converting, and that function shows the catalog modified only as of the older date."  So I should have been clearer in my initial post, but I have already tried your suggestion, and it did not work.  It converted the catalog that I wanted to convert, but it only converted the catalog through an earlier date, so it did not convert months of my more recent photos.

  • "Share to Flickr" stopped transferring tags and descriptions from PSE10.

The "Share to Flickr" function suddenly stopped transferring tags and descriptions when uploading photos from PSE10.  The only event that preceded this error was a prompt to "authorize" my Flickr account (when this prompt happens on occasion, I simply re-authorize my Flickr account and everything usually returns to normal).
Here is what I've tried so far, with various ordering of steps:
    Preferences-Adobe Partner Services-Reset Accounts
Preferences-Adobe Partner Services-Clear Online Service Data
    Preferences-Adobe Partner Services- Refresh
Deleting the cache folder found at: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Online Services\Photoshop Elements 10.0.0\cache
Any other suggestions?  My photos continue to upload and appear on Flickr, but the hours of time consuming effort I put into tagging and captioning my photos is no longer displayed on my Flickr page.
    Thanks,
    Garth

    Hi,
I have tried using PSE 9 & PSE 10 - they both omit the tags when uploading the images to Flickr.
If I upload the same image directly to the Flickr page then the tags are copied.
I am beginning to think that the problem may lie in the Adobe uploader service. When you use PSE to share to Flickr, the images are sent to the Adobe uploader service which then passes them to Flickr. The same Adobe service is used by Lightroom and I believe that has an option to minimize the metadata. I'm wondering if the service has been changed to minimize the metadata by default but we don't have a way of changing the default.
I would be interested to hear if Jon can get it to work correctly on PSE - then I know whether to carry on looking or not. I'm sure that it will work on Lightroom.
I have downloaded the Flickr uploader tool and use drag & drop from PSE to the uploader. If you write the tags to the photos first, they are copied to Flickr.

  • Keywords imported from PSE 5.0 (Poor User Experience)

When moving to Lightroom, I successfully imported my substantial catalog (6,000 images) from Photoshop Elements 5.0. Keyword importing doesn't seem to be quite right, however. I've noticed the following two problems.
    1. All keywords appear both in their proper hierarchy AND as separate, top level keywords. For example, I have:
    Family
    Kids
    Nick
    as well as just:
    Nick
All they Nick photos are tagged with both keywords (just "Nick" and "Nick>Kids>Family.")
These keywords seem to be treated by LR as separate keywords. For instance, if I apply "Nick" to a photo, it does not update the photo count for "Nick>Kids>Family." And vice versa.
This is a confusing situation. So it seems that I should delete all of the standalone, top level keywords, like "Nick." Do others agree? Is this a bug in the importing process from PSE 5.0?
    2. The hierarchy tags do not seem to update the photo count properly. When I create a parent/child keyword relationship in Lightroom, the addition of a child tag will of course update the count for the parent ("Family" as well as "Nick"). But this does not seem to work with respect to the keyword hierarchies imported from PSE 5.0. So perhaps I should essentially re-create the keyword structure in LR, which wouldn't be that hard to do. (Select "Nick" photos, delete the existing keywords, and create a new "Nick" keyword with the proper parent/child relationships.)
Again, have others seen this behavior? Or am I misunderstanding how this functionality is supposed to work?
I'm running LR 1.3.1 on Windows Vista.
    Thanks.

I'm trying the Lightroom trial version and have had very similar issues on my import from Elements 5.02.
I get a Top level tag and a matching one in a tree, event though it is only in the tree in Element Organizer. Some seem to have the identical set of photos, but others like "Emma" (my cat) have 10 photos attached at the top level and 200+ in the tree.
I'm also struggling with using multiple keywords at once like
    Jim + Mexico + Lisa
In the tree view I can only select one at a time and when typing into FIND it sometimes narrows the selection drastically for no apparent reason.
Any pointers for someone happy with their Elements Organizer into Lightroom import would be most appreciated.

  • How do I tag people in PSE 11?

How do I tag people in PSE 11?

    Click on the menu bar:
View >> Show People in Tag Panel
PSE11 introduced the new people icon. In earlier versions they were the same as keywords. It is possible to merge them but it involves a bit of manual work. The easiest method is to simply drag the new people icon to a batch of selected photos with the old tags.
Start by ensuring the people icons are displayed at the bottom of the right-hand panel under the Media tab. If you cant see them as a list go to the top menu:
View >>  Show People in Tag Panel
Then click on the right pointing icon to the left of People Tags to expand the list and you can also use the plus and minus symbols to add or remove people icons.
Now scroll to the top of your keywords and choose a persons name that  was imported by clicking on the chevron to the right of the highlighted (people) keyword. Press Ctrl+A to select all the photos of that person or use Shift+Click on the first and last. Now drag the new people icon for that person on to one of the thumbnails and it will be added to all the selected photos.
Return to the top of the keyword list and right click on the old person tag and choose delete. That will remove it from all photos with that word.
