Transferring TM backups from Case-Sensitive to Non-CS drive

I recently bought a new external HD to meet my needs for more storage. The current external HD I use for TM was auto-formatted for Mac OS extended journaled (case sensitive) without me realizing it until now. Since there are some complications with restoring files and apps using the case sensitive format I decided to format my new external drive Mac OS extended journaled which to my understanding is the recommended format. I would like to avoid continuing to use the case-sensitive format but I'd like to be able to keep my current backups.
Is there any way to copy my old TM backups from the Case-sensitive drive over to my new drive or should I just forget about my old backups and start fresh on the new drive? Is there an app like SuperDuper or CCC that can do this? I apologize if this is a common question but I've searched for weeks and I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this problem.

Your best bet, by far, is to start fresh on the new drive.
But you can still see and restore from the old ones, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

Copying folders & files from case-sensitive to non-case-sensitive volume

I'm trying to copy a rather large (60+ GB), folder and all its enclosed items from a volume that is has case sensitive file names to one that does not. The copy operation always stops when it comes across a duplicate file/folder name differing only in the case of some of the characters. The folders/files in question are actually not duplicates, so I would like to change the file name of the duplicate by appending anything to the filename.
The copy operation does not provide any choice but to abort the operation when it finds the first identical file or folder name differing only in case..
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, that is not a viable solution, as I am tring to convert a case sensitive volume to a non-case sensitive volume.
What I would like is a method to copy files and when a duplicate occurs it asks me what to do like rename the second duplicate. However this problem is now moot, as I painstakingly renamed each offending file/folder as each error occured, and then restarted the copy.
While the question is not answered, I am marking it as such because I am now past the problem.

Trying to move backup from Time Capsule to external USB drive

As per the title, I'm getting rid of my Time Capsule and am trying to move the backups to an external USB drive instead.
Initially I used AirPort Utility 5.6.1 to archive to the USB drive. However, when I switched TM back on, it wanted to do a full backup rather than incremental.
I then found Pondini's very useful page at http://pondini.org/TM/18.html and decided to try it this method instead. It also made me realise that I'd incorrectly formatted the new drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when in fact the TM backup was case sensitive. So I thought this could have been the issue, but still persued Pondini's method. I formatted the drive again, this time in the correct format, and followed Pondini's guide, copying the Backups.backupdb folder from the sparse bundle to the new drive, which completed fine. But unfortunately, TM again wanted to backup everything from scratch when I turned it back on.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

So it looks like I was wrong on both counts.
I misunderstood AirPort Utility's archive feature. I failed to realise that archiving actually puts the sparse bundle in a separate folder called "Data Archive" on the new drive, so of course TM won't continue using that existing backup.
It would also seem that I was incorrect in thinking that Pondini's method didn't work. When I tried it again, I realised that TM was in fact continuing the backup. Initially it looks like it's going to do a big backup, but actually only backed up a few hundred megabytes, then everything was back to normal.
Incidentally, I've also found that if you do use AirPort Utility to archive the backup, you can effectively using Pondini's "How can I copy my TM backups to a different location?" by mounting the spare bundle in the "Data Archive" folder, then dragging Backups.backupdb to the root of the drive.
I just wanted to post this for completeness and in case it helps anyone in the future.

It may be Time Machine, but Time Machine doesn't store backups in .zip folders. Open Finder and select your backup external disk in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". If you are using Time Machine, you should see a folder called "Backups.backupdb".
If you are using Time Machine and you want to restore a full Time Machine backup, there are different methods depending on the Mac OS X version you are using. Open  > About this Mac, see Version and tell me what version you are using

Copying Files from Case-Sensitive External to Non-Case-Sensitive Internal?

I just got a new iMac today and I'm trying to transfer some of my old files (specifically iTunes & iPhoto). My old computer was an MBP & only had an 80 GB HD, so these files were run off an external drive.
I know basically how to copy these files onto my new computer. The problem is that my external drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled). So when I try to copy the iTunes or iPhoto folder, I get the following message:
+You can’t copy “iTunes” because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn’t distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames.+
The only option I know of is to reformat my iMac's drive as Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled). Since Macs ship with the drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I assume that's the best option, and would prefer not to reformat if I don't have to. I've also read that some programs won't run on a case-sensitive drive.
*Do I have any easy alternatives to move my iTunes/iPhoto folders?*
*If not, what negatives do I need to consider when reformatting my iMac's drive to a case-sensitive one?*

I believe so, as that's how Apple tells you to move it: [Moving your iPhoto library|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229].
I don't want to spend too much time on the case-sensitivity problem until that question is answered, just in case.
It may not be as easy to solve, though. That library is a "package," kind of like an app -- actually a folder, but treated as a single object for most purposes. If you right-click it via the Finder and select +Show Package Contents,+ you'll see the file/folder structure.
See the note in the link above -- it sounds like changing file names will break the structure; it may only affect the files you change, but it might be worse.
If you can find the duplicates, you may be better off exporting them via iPhoto, deleting them via iPhoto, then re-importing them under different names. That should keep the structure intact.
At the very least, make a full copy somewhere before touching it.

Can't restore from case sensitive TM back-up

I'm in the final stages of restoring my system following a complete rebuild, and am having an issue stop me from restoring all of the files from my TM backup.
Prior to the rebuild it appears that I had my main drive formatted as Extended (case sensitive). Likewise, my TM backup drive was also formatted as case sensitive.
Since the rebuild my main drive is now not formatted as case sensitive, and while I can restore most of the files from the TM backup, there are a small number that won't restore, giving the error message:

As I'm restoring to what was an erased drive, the files can't already exist somewhere else on the drive. Also, it seems odd that most files aren't affected by this, while some are - both data and applications.
I've tried to restore to another case sensitive drive, change the file name something unique so that I could then copy to the non-case sensitive drive, but in the process of copying, the same message appears and the copy fails.
Is there some way to restore individual files from a case sensitive TM backup to a non-case sensitive drive, or to change whatever is causing this within Terminal (note that I'm a complete Terminal novice)

The files weren't on the drive before the restore started. The restore created them. If the case-sensitive backup has multiple files of the same name (except for case) in a folder, the first will be restored, then you will get the error message when it tries to copy the second.

Most files have different names.

I just got off of the phone with Adobe support. They told me they knew the solution, but that they would not tell me tonight. I had to call back between 6:00 am and 5:00 PM tomorrow. That does not work with my schedule. So I googled some stuff and found that Adobe CS 3 is not supported with Case-Sensitive file systems. So OK, let me install this to my other MAC that has a non case sensitive drive. Same error. Even though I have a non case-sensitive drive, the OS is on a Case-Sensitive Drive and I am never prompted where to install like most all other Mac Software.
I have always formatted case-sensitive. So I am thinking to myself why not start using a non case-sensitive drive. Well, to start off I want it case sensitive. I enjoy web programming and like this feature. Sure it is not needed, but I am glad Apple offered me a choice. And I am sure there are many other reasons why to use it. Also I would be interested in knowing why non case-sensitive drives are supperior.
Why is this a requirement now? I have used Adobe software in the past without this specific issue. I also have Large TB drives and do not know how to 'safely' do this. You will not catch me jumping through this hoop. I will not risk the change to the file system. And I can not be expected to format my drive. I just wonder what Adobe would say tomorrow if I called.
The Direct line I was given by adobe is 800-642-3623 for support on this issue. You don't need anything else but to call this number and ask. You can not get through after hours though.
Wow, I just can't believe this and the lack of interest Adobe had with me.
I hope I can get a refund on the software. Until I am able to downgrade my file system format, I do not want to sit on Adobe's bill. I will buy it again assuming I learn I can't do without PS CS3.

Are you upgrading from SQL2005 to 2008? We had this problem as it was installed w/SQL2005. What we did was install SQL2008 concurrently with 2005 so we could do a test to ensure fixing the collation would solve some problems with core functionality as well as add-ons, which it did.
Even though all the databases were CI/case insensitive, because the server was CS/case sensitive, it caused problems. You probably have the same. And if you don't, when you upgrade to SQL2008 it seems to do this for you.

Transferring iPhone backup from PC to Mac - will this work?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am almost done with transferring everything from my PC to my Mac after a long full day and a half of backing up, reformatting external hard drives etc.
I have read to transfer an iPhone backup from PC to Mac you need to do the following:
If you are a Windows user, open the Start menu, click on "Computer" and then navigate to the "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" directory.
And then:
Click on the "Finder" icon and navigate to the "Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup" folder on the Mac.
I did the first step just fine, but when I tried to find the folder on the Mac by both manual navigation and then a spotlight search, it wasn't found, so I went into the Library/Application Support and then created a new folder with the name MobileSync and a subfolder 'Backup' within that. Will this work?
If not, could someone please help me on how to get my iPhone backup onto the Mac.

Convert from Case-sensitive Journaled to Journaled without Format Possible?

I am now trying to install Adobe CS3 but it will not install unless I have the OS system on the non-case-sensitive volume. I went to Adobe website and the only way to solve the problem is to install the software on the volume that has Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Currently, I am using Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). I would like to ask whether there is anyway I can "convert" my current format into Mac OS Extended (Journaled) without having to format (i.e. erase the disk)? It will be a real pain to erase everything before doing so just to install Adobe CS3.

I never use case-sensitive. You're going to have to go back and erase your hard drive so that it's formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition if the case-sensitive part is giving you fits. I don't know what OS you're running but, as far as I know, not even AutoCAD 2013 for Mac will run under Mountain Lion (that's the last I heard, anyway).

Can't use time capsule because it won't backup a "case sensitive drive". what does this mean?

Back up fails because the time machine can't back up a "case sensitive" disk. I have no idea what this means or how to fix it.

What are you backing-up to, an external HD or a Time Capsule?
Check the Format of your internal HD and your external HD (assuming that's what you're backing-up to), via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utiliites folder).
Click the partition (indented under the main line for the drive) in the sidebar, and see what's shown at the bottom:
Do the same for your Time Machine drive, and report what you find.

Moving Time Machine backups from Time Capsule to External USB Drive

hoping someone out there can help I'm trying to move my time machine backups from my old Time Capsule to my external USB drive. I've already used the Airport Utility to "archive" my Time Capsule to a USB connected WD MyBook Elite.
Right now my WD MyBook Elite has both the archive, and recent (roughly 5 backups) of both my MacBook & MacMini. I've tried to follow the seemingly simple steps located in the FAQ's here [URL="http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/18.html#id22"]Copy NETWORK backups to be used LOCALLY[/URL] , but I cannot past step 1.

That's not referring to the sparse bundle you're copying FROM, but the new volume you just formatted on the USB drive you're copying TO.
If you didn't just format the partition, that box may not be shown -- it not, there's no problem and you don't need to do anything in that step.

I'm not sure what you mean by that: you cannot combine the backups of two different Macs. You can put them both on the same hard drive, either in two different partitions, or, if any are going to be backed-up over a network, in a sparse bundle.
If I've misunderstood, please clarify exactly what you're trying to do.

Transferring contact info from iPhone to a non-ATT phone

Sadly, I'm having to give up my iPhone tomorrow and move to Verizon. The signal strength I get from ATT just stinks...has been getting worse over the months. Most often my phone reads "No Service" in my apartment and for blocks up and down the street. I live on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, and there is supposedly a tower just blocks away. I've replaced the phone itself, the SIM card, software updates, complained to ATT over and again, but no improvement. No more about this, apparently a very common story with many ATT customers.
My question is about getting ready to transfer my service. What can I do to get my contacts out of the iPhone so I can import them to an LG model. I have synced the phone with itunes numerous times,as well as updated the software thru itunes. Are the contacts now on my SIM card? There must be a post in this forum about this, but I can't find it. Can anybody help me?

While the iPhone is connected to iTunes check to see if your contacts are being synced to an address book on your computer. You will find this in the Info tab when you select the iPhone in iTunes.
Once you have chosen an address book on your computer and synced your iPhone your contacts will then be on your computer.
You need to then find out how you sync the contacts on your computer with the LG phone.
