Transferring updates from iBookG4 to Mac Mini

I do software updates on my iBook G4 using the local library's free wireless connection. At home, my Mac Mini has only a dialup connection. So I put the Mac Mini and iBook on a wireless LAN, with the Mac Mini connected to the wireless router. Is there a way to transfer the software updates from my iBook to my Mac Mini? Thanks.

One the updates are installed on your computer using Software Update, the original downloads are deleted and no longer available.
But, if you select the option "Install and Keep Packages" from the "Update" menu in Software update prior to downloading the updates, then the downloads will be kept in a folder.
That folder will be opened and displayed on your desktop after the update process has completed. Then, you can copy those updates to your other computer.
Be sure that you are installing compatible updates on the other system though.
If your Mini is an Intel System, then it will not be able to properly use some of the Updates that Software Update selected for your iBook.
As for updates that have already been installed at this point, the only option you really have is to go to Apple's Download site, and download the updates manually.
As a note:
You will probably want to move the downloads from the folder that Software Update placed them in, into another folder that you can find easier (just drag and drop).
And, to transfer them to the iBook, you should be able to place on machine or the other into Target Disk Mode, and then connect the two with a FireWire cable.
This can be done by holding down the letter "T" while starting up.
This will make that computer behave like an external hard drive.
Once in this mode, connect it to the other computer with a firewire cable, and browse to where the files are you wish to copy to the other system. From that point on, it's just like working with any other hard drive.
Be sure to "unmount" the other computer from your Fnder window before unplugging it.
Just use your power button (press and hold for about 6 or 7 seconds) to turn off the machine in Target Disk Mode once it has been unmounted.

You can not use a DVD that shipped with one Mac to load on to another. To upgrade to Snow Leopard you will need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD.

Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
That should do it.

I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac, and from Mac to Mac. PC to PC is fine. Nothing but problems with the Mac. One example:
While working on my PC, I open shared folders on an external HDD connected to the Mac. I click on paste to move the files. I get an error after a few seconds to a minute of trying to move several files from my PC Win 7 to Mac OS Maverick, that there is a file already at the destination on Mac. This statement is true, but it was just put there because I am copying them over in that same action. It reads 0Kb and wasn't there before I started. Then I get an error: The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again..
Whether I click on it a bunch right of way or wait, it still takes about 45 seconds. I have to do it with every file and it only happens when copying from a PC to Mac. I have even restarted both computers so nothing is using any files. If I copy one file at a time, I don't get any error.
So I have one file to move, no problem. If move 5 files, The first will go fine, but it shows all 5 files in folder at once. All other files than the first show 0kb. I get the file already existing error once it starts the second file transfer, and I select move and replace. Then I get The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program. I wait or click repeatedly until it starts to move file. That file will then show something other than 0kb. When it is done, the error process starts all over. I tried checking the PC with unlocker, but the files do not show themselves locked on the PC.

Its not only French. Even certain characters in English will come across as gobblydegook from 1 platform to another. I see this in emails that likely were composed in Word & the characters don't come across.
Not sure if this is still true, but years ago someone explained that there is a standard character set & then I think its extended characters & those vary from platform to platform or language to language, etc.

if you have sound icon on your menu bar: press alt on your keyboard and click mouse on sound icon - check is the correct audio output is selected.

That's the problem, then. The files are under your 'old' user account. You should be able to access them if you log into your old account. However, that's not going to let you move them to your new user account. It's for situations like this that I always create a root user account (although I seldom access it). With a root user account, you can copy files from one user account to another. Note that someone may come up with a better idea than what I would use, but here goes.
Read http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528 and set up a root user. Then you can transfer files from one account to another. If you like, you can delete this account after you've moved your files.

Should I replace failed hard drive in imac 4,1 or run from external or mac mini?

My hard drive failed in my iMac 4,1 (early 2006 intel). I am running from an external drive, but slow. Should I replace the hard drive ($300 at Apple), purchase a better external to run from or a mac mini? I'm trying to determine if it makes sense to invest further in this iMac since its 5 yrs old already. Can any one offer some insight/opinion?

Call around, at less than $200 to replace the Hard Drive, it makes a little more sense to fix and use it for another year or two...
I replace the Hard Drive in my Early 2006 a couple of years ago not because it died, but because it became to small.
Sorry I can't honestly help you decide, because I'm torn and can't decide for myself. Not liking the Glossy iMac's, I've also been toying with the idea of either a Mac-Mini or used Mac Pro? My biggest problem with the Mac-Mini is, that by the time you do a few upgrades it cost as much as a base iMac.

Downloaded tv show episodes. Bought the entire season and after watching one and downloaded first 4-5 they disappeared. This was during the time I was trying to migrate stuff from an older mac mini. Help?

I downloaded several episodes of the tv show "touch." I purchased the entire season and had watched one show. It took quite some time for each show to download, but I had downloaded 4-5.
About this time (within the last two weeks) I was trying to use migration assistant to migrate information from my older mac mini and my macbook. while I was able to move things from my older mac mini I noticed that the tv show went missing.
Also I purchased a program called 'Touched" in a season pass. After I downloaded a couple of episodes I watched one and continued to download the episodes as they were available.
I also purchased a program called "Tune Up" which elminates duplicates of iTunes songs. I have a large collection and this helped to get rid of the duplicates faster than clicking on them one at a time. Maybe this had something to do with the tv shows episodes and the podcasts disapeering.
Any ideas?

As far as the TV series being in 1080p then that is upto the content provider and some older seasons are in 720p or only SD eg Stargate
It may well be that the season you want is only available in 720p

Normally you should be able to drag and drop them onto the drive, provided the drive is Mac formatted. Have you already tried that?
