Transferring/Upgrading iPhoto Library Error

Hi guys,
Before you ask, I have trawled the forums for similar problems, but nothing seems to solve my issue.
Having a major problem with what I thought would be a simple task. I've previously moved my own iPhoto library to an external hd with no problems, so I thought I would be able to do the same with my girlfriends. No such luck. After copying around 2GB of 34GB it states an error -36. I thought upgrading her to iLife 11 may solve the problem, but now when iPhoto needs to upgrade the library itself it crashes after a few minutes. Cleary there is a corrupted file somewhere in the library, but how on earth do I find it amongst 20,000 images? And that's just assuming only one file is corrupted.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, hopefully someone can help!

I have ensured that's also sorted, the drive is partitioned into two 500GB sections. I'm sure that the issue is a corrupted file. I may be wrong, but the library at the moment is still on her MacBook, and wont upgrade into iPhoto '11, which makes me think there is a corrupt file/files somewhere in the library. If this is correct, will it simply be a case of trawling through all her library?
If this is not the case, then I'm really stumped, nothing seems to work.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Upgrade iPhoto library gives error

I recently bit the bullet and decided to upgrade to iPhoto 11 or iPhoto 9.2.3 from the App Store. When I tried to open my current iPhoto library it asked me to upgrade the library. I clicked "Upgrade". It began "Examining" the library. After a few minutes, it gave me an error that it could not read the file type of the library.
I've run BatChmod and adjusted the permissions for a few libraries. I am still getting the same error.
What can I do to get iPhoto to open my previous iPhoto libraries. Updating an App should not be this difficult. I'm fairly unimpressed with Apple and this software at this time.

+A sparse bundle is essentially the same as a sparse disk image. The difference is that a sparse image is one giant file on your disk and a sparse bundle is lots of small files (8 megabytes each). They work and look the same way, but you can right-click on a sparse bundle, select "show package contents" and see the individual 8 meg sections.+
If the backup software can do incremental backups and work on packages I think it will work on the sparse bundle disk image. Might be worth a try.

Unsupported File System Error When Trying To Upgrade iPhoto Library on QNAP

I upgraded to iLife11 from iLife08. My iPhoto Library is stored on a QNAP server and has worked just fine for many years. When iPhoto[9] tries to upgrade the library it gives an error "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
Other iLife11 applications such as iMovie recognize files from the QNAP just fine.
I have tried moving the original iPhoto Library into another folder and then creating a new library on the server but get the same message.
I have upgraded to iPhoto 9.0.1 already.
Any ideas?

Can't upgrade iPhoto Library - 'unable to write to library "iPhoto Library"'

I apologise in advance if this is a little convoluted.
I have a MacBook Pro purchased a little over a year ago and I'm not sure what version of iPhoto is was running. It had a meltdown when I tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion and was ably serviced and returned to me with all my data heroically saved and stored in a shared folder.
When I got it back I upgraded successfully to Mountain Lion and installed all the iPhoto updates. After a false start, and having to reinstall iPhoto I am now running 9.4.3.
I have shifted my old iPhoto Library out of the shared folder and into the Pictures folder where it sits alongside the pretty much empty iPhoto Library created automatically by the install. When I try to open my old Library it says it needs to be upgraded, which makes sense, but immediately after the upgrade commences I get an error message saying 'Unable to write to library "iPhoto Library" Check that you have permission to write to the library directory'. I am not sure what to do from this point.
I have verified that the photos are all still in the old iPhoto Library Package.

Hang on - I had browsed extensively, but it was only after I wrote my question that all the other similar ones popped up on the side bar. I've followed the advice in some of those and it seems to be working. I apologise, but I seem to be unable to delete this discussion.

Iphoto not responding - Cannot upgrade iPhoto library after iWork'06 instal

I just installed iLife '06 - but now I can't access my iphoto library.
A screen pops up with the following message " The photo libary needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto". However, when I hit the "update" button - iPhoto doesn't respond. The screen says "updating photo library.... time remaining x minutes" - but iPhoto never installs. After 20 minutes or so I just get an error message.
I would welcome your help. I purchased iLife to be able to upgrade iphoto for holiday gifts - and no I am in trouble !

Upgrading iPhoto library to iPhoto '08 corrupted the library

I've seen discussions on a similar topic, but none with quite the same issue. I moved my iPhoto library from my old iBook G4 to my also old (but upgraded) PowerBook G4. The PowerBook G4 had iPhoto '08, so my library was converted/upgraded when I opened it the first time. This corrupted the library. I was able to rebuild part of the library but manually dragging the individual folders in the iPhoto package contents to the iPhoto icon in the dock, saving half of the pictures, but it isn't working for the rest of them. Specifically, those pictures whose organization (album names) were retained in the iPhoto library package contents were successfully imported. But for the rest of the pictures, iPhoto imposed its own organization in the package contents: that is, my album names are no longer there, and the photos are organized in folders with dates (eg, April 1, 2010) for their names. When I try to manually import these pictures by dragging the date-named folder to the dock, I get an error message. What do I do?

I would start by trying again - updating older iPhoto libraries does not normally corrupt them - connect he two systems together and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto

Trying to upgrade iPhoto library

I’m trying to up prepare a v7 iphoto library for use in iphoto v9.5.1. When I try open it I get an error message that says “To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.” Then I have to quit or learn more. I downloaded the library upgrader from apple, but when I try to upgrade I get the message “Your library can now be upgraded in the current version or iphoto. Do you want to launch iphoto?” My only options are to quit or launch iphoto. When I launch iphoto I’m right back where I started, with it telling me to use the upgrader. I’m stuck!

Yes, I ran the upgrader. That's what gave me the message “Your library can now be upgraded in the current version or iphoto. Do you want to launch iphoto?” It wouldn't actually upgrade the library, just forced me to open iPhoto which in turn gave me the original error message. I did some more internet research and found a 3rd party program called iPhoto library manager which I used to rebuild the iPhoto library and that worked like a charm. I still feel like there should be a more straightforward way to do it within the iPhoto software though.

Upgraded iPhoto library no longer accessible

Hi All, I performed an upgrade through Apple to my '08 version of iphoto in the late winter/early spring months (Feb/March time period). Ever since then I have not been able to access my pictures via the icon on my desktop. I get an error message that reads "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto." It then goes on to tell me that I have upgraded to a newer version (when the heck did I do that??) and that I need to use the newer version in order to open my photo library.
Life was a little busy for me and I am just now getting around to dealing with this issue. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

This is a symptom of a damaged database.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

I am trying to copy iphoto library from one hard drive to another and get the message The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) = Need to back iy up or my wife will kill me. thanks for help

Here is something you can try:
Obtain iPhoto Library Manager. It is an inexpensive program you can download. Run it and tell it to REBUILD your iPhoto Library from your original iPhoto Library. It will create a NEW file in a destination that you specify (you can specify the other hard drive and thus get a backup all at once) and try to recreate the iPhoto Library based on the info from your original one. Depending on the problem causing your -36 file error, iPhoto Library Manager may (a) successfully recreate your entire photo library successfully on the other hard drive; (b) recreate all of your original photo library except for the part that is damaged; or (c) won't be able to finish at all if the disk problems are severe enough.
If (c) happens, you may have to copy the actual photos individually out of the iPhoto Library and into a new iPhoto Library. The actual photos are inside the iPhoto Library. You can find them by control-click once on the iPhoto Library and select Show Package Contents. The folder called Originals or Masters has the photos (originals) and a folder called Modified or Previews has the edited photos. I suggest COPYING (not moving) these folders to the external drive. You will then need to re-import the actual photos inside these folders to a new iPhoto Library.

I bought my new MacBook Pro yeaterday and am unable to download photos. I tried three times to upgrade iPhoto Library but can't.

Faster transfers of iPhoto library

So I bought an SSD for my MBP and am in the process of transferring everything to my new NAS from my existing hard drive. Unfortunately, I found that my iPhoto library is about 225Gb large and after initiating the copy from the MBP to the NAS, it says it's gonna take 6 days...actually, make that 7 (it keeps going up). I can't wait a week to move everything over...does anyone have a better idea to get this done quickly?
It might also help to note that I do have a Time Capsule with backups of everything, including my iPhoto library. If there's a way to install the new drive, restore everything except the media files, then move it all to the NAS straight from the Time Capsule, that would be fantastic. If that's not possible, I'd be happy with any way to speed up this process. Thanks!

The iPhoto Library is a package that contains a large number of tiny files (reference files for faces, locations, albums, thumbnails, etc). The Finder needs to sort out all this before it starts copying, and it overestimates the time required. In my experience not much seems to happen during the first 10-15 minutes of the copy process except the estimated time keeps rising to a scary level; but once it actually starts copying things speed up. It's still not as fast as a "normal" copy, I think the reason has something to do with the iPhoto Library being a package and the internal structure of the library. The same slowness exists wtih iCal files, by the way.
There are some workarounds on the internet that people have used but they involve digging into the iPhoto LIbrary package and manually copying portions to a new folder on the destination drive, then renaming and some other stuff. When you do that you risk corrupting the Library. I wouldn't advise doing it.
Does the NAS have a USB, FW or eSATA port that you could use to attach it directly to your Mac for the copy process? Copying via a direct connection will usually be faster than via your network, especially if you have FW800 or eSATA. In my experience copying disk-to-disk via a gigabit network is about as fast as FW800 if you are only copying a few files and they aren't too big. But as the number and size of the files rises, FW800 does a lot better.

Problems transferring old iPhoto library to iPhoto 6

Several months ago, I upgraded to iPhoto 6. Prior to doing so, I saved my photo files to another hard drive as a backup. Somehow, the old iPhoto library (~9000 photos) did not transfer to iPhoto 6. Then, I tried to drag the “Originals folder “into iPhoto 6, and although it first appeared the transfer was working, iPhoto quit during the download. After trying several more times with the same result, I decided to use iPhoto 6 for new photos and it has worked like it should.
I would like to put all of my old photos back into iPhoto, so, today, I booted iPhoto while holding the option key down, “chose library” and then selected the old iPhoto library file. When it said that the old file would be changed to an iPhoto 6 file, I clicked OK. Everything went well until new thumbnails were being created and then iPhoto quit again.
Is there another way to do this? Any help would be appreciated.

Given that iPhoto crashes on the update and on the import, it suggests that there's a damaged jpeg in there somewhere.
Try rebuilding the library with the Rebuild command from iPhoto Library Manager. This will create a new library with your pics. Read the help on iPhoto Library Manager first.
