Transferring video files from camera to external drive.

Forum,
How do I transfer video, or indeed can I, to an external drive using Firewire?
I can connect the camera with Firewire 400 to the computer and the external drive with F/wire 800.
I have not tried because i do not want damage my kit.
Thank you
Michael Craven.

Just connect the drive and see if you can capture to it... many times you can, but sometimes you can't... depends on the FW bridge in the drive. If it's fast enough, you won't have a problem. You won't hurt anything trying at any rate. If it drops frames or something, then a firewire card added to your system to create a second firewire bus will fix you right up.

  • Trouble Transferring Videos Files from computer to ipad in ios 8

    Hello -
I'm a bit confused about the "sharing" aspect of what used to be the "home videos" section in itunes for transferring video files to my ipad. It appears I can only access these files when my itunes is open and able to be accessed via wifi. What am I missing? I would like to have the files themselves on the ipad so that I can watch videos when not connected to the internet, and not near my computer.
Apologies, this is probably an easy fix - I haven't been able to find an answer,
    Elizabeth

  • HT201250 Transferring files from a Seagate external drive

I have a seagate external backup drive (from my PC)
There are some files I want to transfer to my new IMac, before using this external drive as the normal back-up, with Time Machine.
But how do I first transfer over these data files?

Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Select your external drive on the left then under the Erase tab select MS-DOS(FAT) as your volume format. Keep in mind that re-formatting your drive will erase all of the data so make sure you have it all backed up on your computer before you re-format.

Are you replacing your PC with the iMac or are you still going to use both computers?

  • Transferring files from iMac to External Drive issues. Please help

I have a 500gb Western Digital external hard-drive. I began using it on a PC, but got a Mac a couple of months ago. There are a couple of problems that I am encountering. First of all, the folders that I had on my external drive (music, movies etc.) are all locked, and no matter what I try on the Mac, I cannot unlock them.
That really did not cause too much of an issue, because I would just drag them onto the drive, and put them in the proper folders when I connected it to a Windows machine.
However, recently when I try to transfer an album from the Mac to the external, I get an error message that says:
The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Song/Album.mp3" could not be read or written. (error code -36)
Basically my two questions are how do I unlock the folders on my external drive, and what is causing this error to start all of a sudden?
    Any help would be appreciated

  • Transfer files from Mac formatted external drive to PC formatted drive

i need to transfer quicktime files (that were captured from video with FCP) to a PC formatted external drive (for editing them in after effects on a PC). the files can be transfered by burning them on a DVD, but that will take a very long time and waste many DVDs because i have 60 GB of material... can this be done (without having to purchase expensive software)?

    thanx tom,
first of, i like that you made the link appear as one word. how did you do that? it's really cool!
i downloaded the program, but i'm not sure how to use it... reading the guide just made me more confused... if i understand correctly, it will automatically reformat ALL my files to NTFS-3G ones, which are not as stable... i'm a little scared to install it... though i may have totally misunderstood what it says. i see mostly black when i try to read these kind of things...
anyone out there have experience with this program?

  • Handling video files from camera

I am shooting a large number of video clips (on a Panasonic Lumix) of our baby and need a solution for organizing & saving them all, not too concerned with editiing at the moment. I tried to copy them over from my camera to an external drive, however using Finder, I only get a single AVCHD file rather than the numerous clips. On the other hand, I can import them into distinct clips using iMovie, but they all get bundled together under one sub-menu, and it doesn't seem like an ideal format for organizing + archiving. What is the suggested approach?

It is a good question and I think if you ask 10 people you will get 10 different answers.  First of all which OS and iMovie version are you using?  (Is your OS really still 10.4.9?).
Your mention of a single AVCHD file suggests to me that you are using OS 10.7 or above, where AVCHD directories appear as packages in the Finder.  If you right click and choose "Show package contents" you will see all the folders and files inside.
I personally take a backup of the AVCHD package from each memory card but for arrchiving and use in iMovie I take the .mts files out of the STREAM folder in the AVCHD directory and place them in folders with the still photos from the same day of shooting and labelled with the date.  In this way it is easy to drag related stills and clips into iMovie 10.0.1 as required. If you are using iMovie 9 you have to transcode the .MTS files first.  You may instead prefer the 'official way' of importing directly from the camera, memory card or AVCHD package copied to hard disk. However this way clips and stills are kept separated.
Apple seems to be promoting iMovie 10 as a repository for video but currently the options for organising  Events are very limited and less user friendly than in iMovie 9.

  • How to move files from mac to external drive

I need to free up storage on my macbook pro, I bought an external drive and have copied the files over.  Then in finder after transfer I moved the files to trash off of my MacBook.  However, when I check the storage it still shows the same amount of storage space taken up.  What are the steps after transferring files to external drive to clear storage on harddisk?

Slightly surprised this has been asked several times before - "More Like This" on the right.

  • Challenges in writing a file from PI to External Drive of Qualtrace System

    Hi PI Experts,
We have to build the interfaces between SAP PI and Qualtrace ( a Third Party System).
I just had a chat with Qulatrace Developer on possible ways of connection between SAP PI and Qualtrace and he replied that Qulatrace can pick the files from their shared drive.
How will SAP PI will put the File on shard drive of some extenal server?
What will be the option in File Adapter?
Please help , if u can suggest something.
    Regards,
    Anurag

    Hi Anurag,
    >>How will SAP PI will put the File on shard drive of some extenal server?
    No, this is not possible.
    >>What will be the option in File Adapter?
If you would like to use the file adapter, then either it should be on the internal server or FTP.
It would be better to create an FTP connection and place the files in it. And those files need to be accessed by them.
    Thanks,

  • Transfer image files from Mac to external drive?

Can someone please help.? I'm a newbie and want to transfer image frile to an external drive...

Well, if you are not doing a complete back up of your system, you can simply drag images to an external drive - that will create a copy there and leave the original in place.

  • Lost id3 tags moving files from mac to external drive

No matter what audio file I move from my desktop to any of my 20 external hhds in finder not itunes the meta data gets lost in the transfer.
My music hard drive died and I'm having to copy all my CDs to a new drive, I like to have all my tags set and ready for when I import songs into iTunes
    Can anybody help??????

Drag and drop should work with the movie files.  Use these instructions for iPhoto library:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5571894
Consider making a new library with the events you want or move the library and then edit it leaving the events you want to remain.
    Ciao.

  • Help with transferring music files from my Maxtor external HD

Can anyone please help? I have been using Windows based PCs for a majority of my life. I recently purchased a Macbook. I have thousands of songs saved on a Maxtor external hard drive. I recently connected the HD to my Macbook and was able to successfully copy over all of the photos I have saved and only few of the audio files. I checked the audio files are saved in itunes format. Why can I not copy all of my music over? Please help!

You could try something like this, if you haven't thought of it already. On the PC side make a new folder, probably at the top level, or perhaps next to the one folder that you could see on the Mac side. Or maybe inside the one folder you can see on the Mac side. Maybe create a new file in it, such as a simple text file. Then see if the new folder and file can be seen on the Mac side. If so, go back to the PC side and try copying one of the mp3 files that couldn't be seen into that new folder. Also, move one mp3, as distinct from copying. Back to the Mac side, see if you can see them.
Now, if you could see the new text file, but can't see the copied mp3, that implies the problem is somehow with the mp3 files. Or the folders they are in.
If you couldn't see the new folder, then the problem isn't the files, but (I guess) something obscure and arcane about the filesystem.
Hopefully, the new folder and its contents will be visible on the Mac side, in which case the path forward should be clear.
Do you have an extremely large number of song files in a single folder? Grasping at straws, but maybe the Mac has some dumb limit that's smaller than the equivalent limit on the PC side. I've never heard of such a thing, but when things are weird, it's a good time to think of oddball possibilities...

  • I want to transfer my Windows files from my Clickfree external drive to my new iMac. iMac recognizes the drive but won't read the files. What should I do? My PC hard drive is dead so I can't hook up my iMac to that.

I'm switching from Windows to iOS. But my new iMac won't allow me to transfer my Windows files on my Clickfree HD425 over to the iMac. It initialy didn't even recognize my hard drive during set up, so I manually went through Finder where it recognized the Clickfree drive. But my files wouldn't appear. I can't go back to my original Windows computer because the hard drive crashed, and that's why I bought this new iMac in the first place. What should I do? As a Mac newbie who was reluctant to exit the Windows world, I don't want my original babystep into the iOS world soured by my first experience.

Hi Rick, & a warm welcome!
In Disk Utility on the Mac, what Format does it say the drive is?

  • ITunes 11 won't import .mov video files from external hard drive but will from internal.

    Hi Everyone
I'm having a problem with iTunes 11.0.1. I can't import .mov video files stored on an external hard drive. I can however import .m4v files from the same external drive. Using either the add to library option or dragging files from the finder.
I can add .mov files from the internal though. Strange I know.
The reason behind this posting is that I'm using iFlicks to convert my TV and movies from my external drive for Apple TV and add all relevent meta data, keeping the files on the external drive and having iTunes link to them.
I would like to be able to simply create a general iTune compatiable file using iFlicks which only takes a minute or two per file to convert. I'm currently converting them to .m4v just for the sack of being able to import them into iTunes from an external drive takes 45 minutes per file.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on a fix to allow me to import .mov files from an external drive into iTunes without copying it to the iTune library file.
    Many Thanks
    Dave

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
Give yourself FULL control and ownership of the exHD, let's call it M:
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
Take control of the top level folder and ALL subfolders.
Try creating a new blank ITL file on M: by pressing *and holding* the shift key while itunes starts. See if you can add everything again.

Got a new external hard drive. Transferred all files from old hard drive to new hard drive. Connected hard drive to macbook. How do I get all my files to be recognized by iTunes and my already made playlists??

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.
