Transferring video footage onto imac

I'm confused (it doesnt take much these days!)
How do I transfer the footage I've shot on my iphone 4s to imovies on my mac??
I can see it in iphoto but I want to rename it and possibly edit it in imovies.
I've got the latest Lion and imovie.
I can see the "iphoto videos" in the events library (in imovies) and there is a test bit of footage there but I don't really know how it got there.
I shot some more footage expecting it to appear there but it didn't. I assumed I'd have to backup the phone for it to appear there but it didn't so I'm not quite sure how I should be doing this?
Also the bit of footage that I can see, can I edit it's name so it lists within the events currently in my events library? These are clips that have previously been imported from an old camcorder and I want my iphone footage to be named in sequence.
Hope I've made myself clear?

You need a program that will record from the line-in audio port.
I use AudioHijack Pro but there are other options...

  • Import Canon FS100 video footage onto Mac OS X?

I took home my school's video camera-- Canon FS100-- and when it won't let me import my footage onto my Mac OS X. When I try, it says that it is unrecognizable.
I thought that all Canons were compatible with Mac's?
How do I import this footage?

    1. The camcorder must be connected to the mains power supply, Import will not work if the camera is running on battery
    2. Connect the USB cable to the camera and the Mac
    3. Switch on the camera, and set it to playback (not record) mode. The camera should appear as a new drive in the Finder
    4. Start iMovie 09. If the Import window does not appear (may take a few seconds), choose File, Import from Camera

  • Video footage onto my n80

i have some video footage on my pc that i wish to transfer onto my n80,i have the latest pc suite, and am using windows xp media centre.can anyone help please?i tried drag and drop, but the phone doesnt playback the video, saying that the gallery doesnt support it.how do i remedy this?thanks for your help.

Windows movie maker must've converted it into some mpeg format which the onboard realplayer does not support. U need to get hold of some software which converts your files into mpeg4 format and them transfer it onto your mobile.

  • Sharpen video footage before uploading onto YouTube

Basically I'm wondering whether there is any way to sharpen up the video footage in iMovie '08 before uploading onto YouTube to compensate for the 'softening' of the video by the YouTube rendering.
I've compared the video's I've uploaded to the same ones uploaded by a few other users and it seems to me that my versions seem to be a little bit blurred. I've tried most of the tricks like resizing the video to 640 x 480 so YouTube compression doesn't have to do too much work and the 100MB limit can be consumed in the quality of the video.
For info, the video footage looks sharp enough in iMovie '08 viewer, I can't seem to find any method to tweak the sharpness from within iMovie.
If this cannot be achieved from within iMovie '08, can the sharpness be adjusted in '06 or in Final Cut Express (which I am REALLY struggling with!), or does anyone have any other suggestions. Any idea on when the upgrade is due out?
Any help and assistance as always is much appreciated

I can't see any options from within Streamclip to sharpen the video further.
Since you are in MPEG Streamclip here (and not iMovie '08), you would have to go through the alternative "Export to other formats..." File menu option to access the original QT structure "QuickTime" option window which includes access to the built-in "Filter" options.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm focusing this particular exercise on uploading pinsharp video footage onto YouTube rather than general video editing.
While the use of different settings and compression formats may help reduce the YouTube loss of quality, IMHO there are just too many issues with both the transcoding of files by YouTube and their on-line player to justify the use of this site where quality is your major concern. Use this site when widest distribution to the most people is more important that the final quality. If you must use YouTube, you may wish to review the following Ken Stone article: Encoding for YouTube Using Compressor.

  • I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then to iMovie9.  Footage in iMovie is stretched.  Is there a way to fix that?

I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then dropped that footage into iMovie9.  The footage is there in iMovie but it is stretched.  I have tried to adjust using aspect ratio options but that doesn't work.  Is there a way to fix that in iMovie (or at any other point in the process)?

It shouldn't be this way.  Did you shoot the video in portrait or landscape mode?  Many people shoot in portrait mode because they typically hold the phone upright.  This is really shouldn't happen if the videos are shot in landscape mode.

Connect the iPhone to your Mac with its USB cable and launch iPhoto.  In iPhoto you can select which files to upload into the library.  Once in the library export them out of iPhoto to a folder on the Desktop via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  with Kind=Original. That will give you copies of the videos in the folder for use outside of iPhoto.
If you want to bypass importing into iPhoto try launching Image Capture and manually upload the selected video files to the folder of your choice.

  • Transferring avchd lite video on to imac

    Hi guys,
i am a fairly new mac user and am struggling with trying to transfer video files from my panasonic lumix zs3 (tz7) onto my mac. I have tried installing software that came with the camera but my mac does not like it and i cant seem to find any updates (software is mediaimpressions). Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

It would help if you would enter some info into your profile, such as which model Mac, the OS you are on, etc. Not having any info, I can only offer some general suggestions.
I checked the Arcsoft site and it shows that the software is Mac compatible (including Snow Leopard); however, you really don't need it. There are several ways you can try to get your video clips onto your Mac:
    1. Try importing the footage directly into iMovie; check the "how to export" (or similar) section of your camera's manual and iMovie's help if you have a problem; or
    2. if your camera doesn't have a USB connection, get a USB card reader; insert your camera card, plug it into a USB port and simply drag your footage onto your hard drive. Since your video footage appears to be Quicktime motion JPEG (according to the tech specs of the zs3), it shouldn't be a problem to play them. If it doesn't, you can get MPEG Streamclip (free) which will convert your footage to another format.

  • I recently reinstalled Snow leapod on my mac because I was having problems. I backed up everything onto disks, but after formatting, i quickly realized that some files did not transfer. I am missing some very important video footage. Please help me!

I recently re-installed Snow leapod onto my macbook. Previously the system was running snow, I believe I may have visited a corrupt website or something. Anyhow, I backed up all of my information onto disks before reformatting, and the format went well. However, I realized after the fact that some important video footage did not transfer to my DVD-R's that I saved my data too. Is there any possible way I could recover this information? I'm trying to recovery software I found recomended online, but im not sure what the outcome of it will be. I know things are not looking good, but was hoping someone could please help me.

Also, as for what I did. I put the OS disk into my computer, restarted it and ran through the screens to completely reinstall the OS. Then, I had to install my Snow Leapord CD because my origional OS was not the newer SL. Its my own fault, I just didnt think of every file off the top of my head before startign the process. I assumed everything was on the backup disks I had just burned.

  • Transferring Video from an external hard drive onto a mac pro via USB

    Hi,
I am planning to buy a Mac Pro in the next couple of weeks, mainly for video editing. Can i trasfer video files onto my mac via usb, or can it only be via Firewire? Also what formats will it accept? I was planning on using AVI or MPEG2

Can i trasfer video files onto my mac via usb, or can it only be via Firewire?
If you mean copying or moving files using the Finder, there is no problem at all.
But if you mean capturing or editing video while media files are stored on an external disk, than Firewire is the right choice, since USB doesn't guarantee sustained throughput (I use USB disks to backup video files, and FW disks to capture/edit video).
Since I guess you'll be using either iMovie or +Final Cut+, the format will be either DV Stream in .dv files for iMovie or .mov (with DV codecs for video and linear PCM for audio) for FCE/FCP. At the end of your editing process you can always convert to AVI or export to a DVD authoring application (e.g. iDVD) that will compress to MPEG2 before burning.

  • Where can I learn how FCP references video footage?

I'm sure this is a basic (but perhaps involved?) question.
I've been learning and using FCP on and off for over a year. I've been using online tutorials and developing a basic knowledge of the program.
I just bought a new 27" iMac with two internal hard drives (the 256GB solid state drive, and a 2TB regular drive). Up until now, I've only ever owned computers with one internal drive, and have never even gotten into editing footage on an external drive.
I've installed FCS 2 on my new iMac, and now I need to transfer the projects I've worked on to my new iMac, along with the video footage those projects use. And I need to know what the best way to do this is. FCS is on the solid-state drive (of course). I'm sure I should put the footage I'm editing on the secondary 2TB internal drive. And maybe the project files, too? Or should they be on the solid-state drive?
Anyway, I really don't have a good understanding of what should be where, and what I need to be transferring, and how to make sure that FCP "knows" where to look for the footage I'm editing.
Is there a place in the manual, or a post here, or a FAQ, or somewhere where I can read about this and get a good understanding of it? This is something I need to know, anyway, so I will know how to backup and store projects that I might want to edit further in the future.
If it matters, I'm editing footage shot in AVCHD on a Canon camcorder. To date, all I've done is backup the actual AVCHD files on multiple drives, reasoning that if I had a crash I could edit the footage all over again. But I want to learn the proper way to do all of this.
    Thanks!

    When you "uncompress" AVCHD files
You aren't uncompressing. You are RE-COMPRESSING. AVCHD is compressed, and you can't uncompress that. But, you compress it into an editing codec...ProRes.
would the result be exactly the same if you did it more than once?
Not sure what you mean by that. There will be slight loss when you recompress, but nothing you'd notice. Transcoding, as it is called, is quite a normal process. ProRes is so well designed of a codec that you can recompress to ProRes again and again 10 times before you see any issues.
if I logged and transferred using the same settings, would the footage be exactly the same?
You can't. FCP doesn't work with AVCHD...it must be converted to ProRes.
My understanding is that FCP "looks" for video footage where it "expects" it to be based on how and where you imported it.
Yes. Once you set your Capture Scratch to your external drive, say MEDIA_01...FCP keeps looking for it there. If you move it, then FCP loses contact with it. Until you tell FCP where it is again.
Let's say I had my project saved, but somehow lost my footage. If I logged and transferred it again from the same AVCHD files, would it come out exactly the same so that (if I put it on the right drive in the right folder) my FCP project would work with it as though it was the original logged and transferred footage?
Yes....absolutely. The project file is the most important thing. Those clips in there point to the media. If the media drive dies, or the media is deleted, simply highlight all the clips and do a BATCH CAPTURE...FCP will look for the original SOURCE files, the AVCHD files, and then re-transcode them. And they will be exactly like the first time you imported them. And your cut will be rebuilt.
Or would there be small differences that would result in my FCP project not recognizing it?
Yes. If you move the footage, rename the footage on the FINDER level, meaning opening the drive and renaming the raw footage, or if you rename the folder that they are in, FCP will lose the connection. Which is why you DON'T do that. Designate the Capture Scratch...import the footage, and only deal with the footage in FCP...until you really know how things work and how to get FCP to reconnect to this footage.

  • Only hear background video footage even though I've adding recorded music

Hi, hopefully a simple one and down to user error!
I've shot video footage before and added music tracks with out problem. This time I tried to add a music file from iTunes but to a particluar part of some video footage, to find that only the background noise from the video footage is audible.
I've tried lowering the sound volume of the background noise and increasing the volume of the music track, I've tried extracting the background noise, cropping the background noise, muting the background noise, but nothing appears to work.
I'm using an old version of iMovie 3.03 on a iMac G4 running 10.3.9 but haven't encountered this problem before.
    Is anyone able to assist?!
    Thanks in advance
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions!
I'm trying (desperately) to remember the quirks of iMovie 3.0.3 (..well, in fact, I'm trying desperately to forget the quirks of iMovie 3.0.3..)
It's probably an incompatibility between the format in which your iTunes music has been saved, and the playback capabilities of the old iMovie, or the version of QuickTime which you're using. (Don't be tempted to simply upgrade QT, by the way, because some versions play better with various versions of iMovie than do others!)
iMovie seems to work best with .aiff files, rather than .mp3 or other formats in which iTunes can store songs.
If all else fails - and it may! - just burn the iTunes track onto a CD, then import the audio from the CD and drop that into your movie.

  • How do i transfer a video back onto my iPhone in the Photo app where it originally was and can be shared from (NOT the video app)

I have a video that i originally took using my iphone but then transfered to my PC.  I want to put it back onto my iPhone in the photo app (NOT video app) so i can share it straight from my phone.
Since one of the iphone updates enabled the volume button as a camera shutter button and i was shooting the video one handed, i held the camera with the volume buttons on top.  Unfortunatly, the phone still saves it in such a way that only the iphone and itunes recognize the proper orientation intended and when it's opened with any other device or program, it automatically makes the part of the video that's against the smooth side of the phone always the top side (regardless of if that makes the video sideways or upside down).  I was able to get the video back onto my phone as a "video" where it shows up in the video app as a "movie" and there are no options to share via text, email, youtube (which were options when the video was still in the photo app).  I need to be able to share the video with family

Have you transferred photos from your computer to your iPhone which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes?
If so, you can place this video in the folder of photos on your computer that is selected to be transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process. Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, select Include Videos.

  • Capturing Video on New iMac with only 1 FireWire Port

Using one of the new Apple iMacs, what is the best way to capture digital video footage (Mini DV) into Final Cut using an external drive as your scratch disk? The iMac offers only one FireWire 800 port. Is it advisable to connect the camcorder to the FireWire port and use a USB 2.0 to connect the external drive? Or can you connect the drive via FireWire 800 and connect the output of the camcorder to one of the other Fireiwre ports on the drive? In this instance I am using a Lacie Rugged Hard Disk that has one FireWire 800, one FireWire 400, and one USB 2.0 port.

They often do not play well with other firewire devices on the same bus. And since all the firewire ports on a Mac are on the same bus, it can lead to incompatibilities during capture. On some computers they work fine, on others they collide.
Try it and see if it works for you. If it does, be happy. If it doesn't, you'll have to do the external drive/camera shuffle.
    It goes like this:
    • turn off the computer and all connected devices,
    • disconnect the external drive
    • connect the camera using a FW800 to FW400 cable
    • turn on the camera
    • turn on the computer
    • launch FCP, set the capture scratch folder to the system drive then capture
    • shut down the computer and the camera
    • disconnect the camera and connect the external drive
    • turn on the drive
    • turn on the computer
    • launch finder and move the captured files from the system drive to the external
    • launch FCP and reset the capture scratch folder to the external drive
    • open your project and reconnect the media.
Or, use a different (non-Canon) capture device.
Or, get a computer that has multiple internal drives or has expansion capabilites so you can add a firewire card to create a second independent firewire bus for the camera.
    Good luck,

  • Photos within video footage go crazy

I have some video footage from a recent trip and I included pictures from the trip in between video clips. Within iMovie the movie plays fine, but when I export it the pictures play very strangely. One picture will come on-screen briefly, then flash back to a previous picture from the movie. This happens 3 or 4 times when the picture is supposed to be on-screen.
I wonder if how I imported the pictures is a problem? I would import within iMovie from an iPhoto album, which put the picture at the end of my movie. Then I would "cut" the picture, move the timeline to where I wanted to insert the picture and paste it there. Doesn't sound too difficult, does it?
As a test I created a brand new movie and dragged the entire iPhoto album folder into the timeline. I added a Ken Burns effect to one picture and a cross dissolve between two pictures,* then exported it. In the resulting movie, the first picture does the Ken Burns thing, cross disolves to the second picture (which is very blurry) and the third picture cycles between it and the second picture, just like in my problem movie. But the remaining pictures play fine.
The movies (AVI: M-JPEG, DVI ADPCM) and pictures (JPEG) are from my digital camera.
    Anyone know what's going on?
(* In my original movie there are no dissolves or effects from pictures to footage or vice versa.)

Another update (since it seems like I'm the only one in the world to experience this problem):
I tried two other iMacs, one running 10.4.11 like me and another running Leopard. Using iMovie HD I created a new movie, imported some pictures and exported the movie. Everything worked fine.
I went back to my machine and deleted the iMovie .plist file. I tried the same test with pictures on my old test movie. It didn't work. I created a brand new movie, which worked. I went back to my original movie and pulled out some pictures, insert other, etc. Nothing worked.
So maybe the movie gets into a strange state and won't export image-to-DV clips correctly. I think I can solve this two ways:
    - create a brand new movie and copy all the old movie's clips over
    - export the pictures I'm interested in as an iPhoto slideshow and import that into iMovie, then chop it up picture by picture.
