Transferring video from still camera

I have taken some 30-40 minute videos with my Nikon still camera. I am unable to download these too my MacBook. I have tried image capture, iPhoto & Nikon's picture transfer software with no success. Pictures & smaller video (1-2 minutes) download perfectly. My new hard drive has ample space but how can I get these video files onto my mac? Could limited RAM be a problem?

Download MPEG Streamclip (Use Google to find it).
Import your clip into MPEG Streamclip and export as DV. DV is iMovie's native format. In your case, you need DV-NTSC. PAL countries use DV-PAL.

  • HD video from still cameras for editing in FCE

Can anyone provide insight into my questions of the different hd recording formats for conversion to edit in FCE? Meaning, still cameras that shoot HD range from avi, mpeg4, h.264, motion jpeg and avchd lite. Is one of these better to use than the others? Is there significant quality loss after conversion? And are all conversion programs the same or is one better than the next? Thank you,
    Bill

All those formats are designed for delivery, meaning shoot it then watch it.
To edit in FCE all HD footqage including HDV will be converted to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec).
Which converter works best on what is like saying how long is a piece of string. My answer is, "double the length of half of it".
The thing is until you know specifics it's pretty much guessing or user opinion.
Regards AVCHD Lite: I believe it works on the latest iMovie directly. You could confirm that in the iMovie forum from users there.
This app is free, works well and covers a lot of bases:

  • Transferring video from a camera

I bought got a panasonic DMC-ZR1 as a present and at first thought I would never shoot video with it but would like to try it. Is there a way to download it to my mac and using some third party software burn it to a dvd? This camera imports photos to iphoto fine but I know video is different. The format says motion JPEG not the Mac friendly AVCHD lite that some of the Panasonic cameras have. My wife has one of the intel based macs with iMovie 8 vs my iMovie 6HD if that would help. Thanks. I have one of the first flip video camcorders and was able to use that by converting files using a program called mpeg streamclip but I do not know if that would work here. Thanks.

What happens if you try to import the video file from the camera into iMovie?
    (I think it should work.)

  • I cannot get CS6 to recognize my Sony DCR-TRV340 camera for capturing video from that camera.  CS6 c

I cannot get CS6 to recognize my Sony DCR-TRV340 camera for capturing video from that camera.  The CS6 capture box keeps putting up a message that capture device is off line.  The Sony DCR-TRV340 camera is not listed in the CS6 Device Type  list in the CS6 DV/HDV device control settings box of Sony cameras.  I've downloaded what I think are the correct drivers for the TRV340, and when I plug the camera into the computer, the computer shows it listed in the devices and printers box, but CS6 will not recognize it.  Do I need to install these drivers into a specific folder in the CS6 program?  If so, where do I find these drivers in the windows 7 professional operating system, and into which CS6 file folder would I copy them to?

Most camera's are not listed in Device controle, set it to Sony and generic. Yours is very old its a Digital 8 camera (I still got a TRV210). Johns second link wont work with your camera.
You do not need to download drivers nor do you need to install anything. Most likely its the Legacy driver.
    Read though this document.

General rule is connect camera to pc wait until windows reconigzes the camera.
    Fire up Premiere and capture.
Never connect the camera to pc when the camera is on.

  • Editing a movie with video from two camera angles

I made video of the home birth of our third child using a miniDV and a Nisis DV6 camera. The DV6 has very lousy sound, but some of the DV6 video was critical to use for a period of time. I imported the overlapping clips, exported the audio on both, muted the DV6 audio, then moved the audio from the miniDV clip so it lined up with the DV6 audio. With a little more fading in/out on the audio from the two tracks I seemlessly/gracefully switch camera angles and preserved good audio.
I have a comment (a wishlist item) and a question. I wish I would have had the ability to take the two overlapping video clips, line up the audio waveforms and at the same time overlap the video clips on the timeline. I wish I could have then played both clips at the same time with the ability to switch between the two camera angles. I would take the ability to view both camera angles without the ability to switch between camera angles in real time, but then I'd wish I had the ability to specify which clip to use at any point in the timeline rather than having to manually insert the video from one camera angle or the other the other then insert a transition. Does any Apple-compatible video editing software thats provide some or all of the capability I desire? If Apple software developers are out there I hope you think this might be another great innovation.

As David and Karsten said: FinalCut Express is really the software, you are looking for. I have only worked with it twice (unfortunately I am still waiting for my - first - Mac now for two weeks, so as a Win-user I had no chance to have a more intensive look on FCE). But it is a great program.
What David said about the learning: It is quite easy. I have learned digital video editing on Adobe Premiere and on a Avid-machine, which is nearly the same as handling FinalCut. You'll perhaps need one evening. But after that you'll have the basic knowledge for editing your videos. The rest comes step by step. It is just learning-by-doing.
Another advice: Adobe Premiere Elements is also a good program for what your want to do. But it is much cheaper and a bit easier to learn. For editing simple home-movies perhaps the better choice. It has even a build-in DVD-authoring.

  • IChat Error: "Can't get video from the camera"

When I try to Screen Share with iChat on a local network, I receive the error "Can't get video from the camera" when I have an external camera plugged into the FW400 port on my Mac Mini. The Screen Sharing feature works great when the camera is not connected. Anyone know why this is and how to fix it?

Tell us about the Network you created please.
What make and model modem ?
Can it route (issue IPs) ?
    IS there a router ?
Make and model of that please ?
If there are two devices which is doing DHCP if any are ?
IS there any computer that is sharing it's Internet Connection with any other computer ?
I take it from the title and the post that you infer you can Video and Audio chat ?
The Cannot get Video from Camera normally gets and Error Log pop up.
This can be opened with the reveal triangle on the left. The Details shown will have a Error number. Do you know what this log says ? (normally Error 20 or 21)
Old logs are stored in Users/(your account)/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors by date.
IF you post an Error Log stop at the line that Says "Binary Images for iChat" as we don't need the bits below that yet.
As the Screen share in iChat uses an Audio component then the Camera if it is also the Mic needs to be ON.
In your case this may mean that in the ichat Video Menu both Camera Enabled and Mic Enabled should both be ticked.
(I have never seen an iChat error code for not (specifically) being able to get the Mic input so the message might be the only one iChat can pop up)
It does seem very odd that it only effecting Screen Sharing.
I have a Firewire connected DV converter that has two Firewire ports itself so I can input the camera feed to two computers. When this is in place the System also sees it as a Network.
I have also heard of one person with a Firewire Stills camera and I think the Storage space was seen as an External Device and therefore appeared Networked which is why I asked the first set of questions.
iChat does not like being in Two networks (a modem that issues IP address and a router doing the same or Wireless to a neighbour and Ethernet to your Own Internet connection, the Mac being the hub in a Share Internet connection, Wireless and Ethernet to the same router and using Parallels when set to Share the Mac's IP are the most common)
The Screen Sharing option in iChat > Video Menu is ON ? (at both ends ?)
As iChat's Screen Sharing is related to the System Screen Sharing and therefore Apple Remote Desktop you may find that in any routing device you may have to open ports 5900 and 5988 if not using UPnP

You said Local Network. Do you mean this is using the Bonjour Buddy List ?

  • "Disconnected from Screen Sharing because: Can't get video from the Camera"

Whenever I try to do Screen Sharing with another Mac (with Leopard), I get this warning:
"Disconnected from Screen Sharing because: Can't get video from the Camera"
It doesn't seem to affect video chats, which I can do just fine.

It's an AirPort Express, but the problem doesn't seem to be unique to the router. I tried it in another location with another router and it still didn't work.

  • My friend's iPod touch 5th gen is locked somehow for 41 years and she does not have a backup. Is there a way to unlock the iPod without restoring it or loosing the pictures and videos from the camera roll?

My friend's iPod touch 5th gen is locked somehow for 41 years  and she does not have a backup. Is there a way to unlock the iPod without restoring it or loosing the pictures and videos from the camera roll, the applications can be redownloaded and she had no music. Is there any known bug about ipods locking on their own because no one seemed to have tried to bypass the 4 digit code and it is locked for 26 million minutes. So thank you if anyone has any information or help for us.

Your friend may have placed the ipod next to an object that repeatedly pressed the screen.  Under certain circumstances this can lead to what appears to the iTouch to be failed attempts to access the system.  After repeated failed attempts, the Touch increases the waiting time required for the password and may ultimately lock in the way you describe.
It's been a while since this was posted, but this might be informative to someone else who finds themself in a similar predicament.

  • Transfering videos from Iphone 4 to laptop, the video is rotateed 90 degrees

After transferring videos from Iphone to laptop, Why would the video be rotated 90 degrees?

IIRC, the iPhone is configured that "normal orientation" for video recording is horizontal with the home button on the right.  If you are holding it in a different orientation, then that would be encoded in the EXIF data on the recirded video file.  Now if that file is edited and that EXIF data is removed or altered, then you could see what you are seeing.  It is also possible that the player yo uare playing the videos back in does not properly support the EXIF data embedded in the videos, which would have the same results.  When I record video on my iPhone 5, the playback on my Mac works properly.

  • I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then to iMovie9.  Footage in iMovie is stretched.  Is there a way to fix that?

I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then dropped that footage into iMovie9.  The footage is there in iMovie but it is stretched.  I have tried to adjust using aspect ratio options but that doesn't work.  Is there a way to fix that in iMovie (or at any other point in the process)?

It shouldn't be this way.  Did you shoot the video in portrait or landscape mode?  Many people shoot in portrait mode because they typically hold the phone upright.  This is really shouldn't happen if the videos are shot in landscape mode.

I don't believe OS X has the ability to receive AirPlay (which is what you're using).  There's some advice on the matter on the Wikipedia page, though:

Scroll down to "Third-party software implementations".

Is it possible to stream live video from a camera to an iPad3 via bluetooth or a cable?
I want to use my iPad as a screen for a reversing camera in my van and want to know if this is possible. do i need a bluetooth camera and is there a specific one that will connect to the iPad? Or is there any form of adaptor that I can plug the camera straight into the iPad?
    Any ideas?

    no
only "live" thing one can do is to airplay mirror the screen of a ios device or a newer mac with mtn lion
