Transfers across messenger? firewall?

when sending files across msn messenger they ake considerable longer than when i am doing it on a windows pc, im assuming this is down to the automatic firewall on my macbook, is there a way around this or is there a way where i can temporarily take the firewall down until the transfer is complete and then put it back up?
any help needed
thanks

nearly every test is a different speed, im in the u.k
some say 3mbps some say 6 some less some more
confused????
all i no is that if i were to use msn on my brothers laptop running msn messenger the file transfers would be alot faster so im guessing the difference is sumwhere in the laptops and the systems not the connections

I recently purchased a video from iTunes. I have done this before however on this occasion the video has not transferred across to my videos store. It is showing as purchased and downloaded and I can view it if I go back into the store and locate it there but that is a bit of a pain. Any ideas?

Delete and redownload them if doing so is free in your country.

  • Can books/pdfs saved in iBooks be transferred across devices (iPad2 and iPhone4) with iCloud?

Can books/pdfs saved in iBooks be transferred across devices (iPad2 and iPhone4) with iCloud?  My documents in Pages is on both the ipad and iphone automatically as soon as i connect both to wifi.  The stuff in ibooks did not do this. Also- I am backing up my phone right now to icloud... it says must be plugged in, connected to wifi, and locked.   So after I do this, all of my icloud-able contents will be available on my ipad??

You might look into using Dropbox for that.  I use it between Macs but haven't tried it with my Phone.

  • Latency across a firewall

We have determined that a delays of > 10 ms across a firewall causes problems with clusters members joining etc... If there a settings that cat be tuned/changed that allows for this type of latency across a firewall?
         Thanks...
         Tom :-)

    Tom,
What you see is not a breakdown in clustering protocol, but a partial communication failure in your environment, specifically in the TcpRing, which is one of (and optional) methods of node death detection.
It looks like Solaris times-out an open TcpSocket used by the TcpRing after 7 hours of normal operation in your environment. Coherence attempts to reconnect four times in-a-row (as specified in the tangosol-coherence.xml) and terminates the cluster service after the last attempt fails, after which the cluster service is automatically restarted.
I would recommend either find out how to control the timeout value or disable the TcpRing.

  • NFS across a firewall

We're currently running a Solaris 9 server hosting a data repository volume presented via NFS. Unfortunately, we now have a firewall between the server and the primary client subnet. After some frustration at trying to grant access, I've found that mountd in NFSv3 is, to put it mildly, a problem for NFS mounting across a firewall. Since it chooses a random high port, the only obvious solution is to open a very large high port range to this server.
As a potential way of avoiding this, I have two questions:
    1) Is there anyway at all to set the NFSv3 version of mountd to listen on a designated static port?
    2) Failing that, is there an NFSv4 package or source available for Solaris 9? Since it's been revamped to only require ports 111/tcp,udp and 2049/tcp,udp, it would also solve this problem.

After a bit more digging, WebNFS appears to be the answer to question 1. By setting the share option as public in dfstab and issuing the mount command as "mount nfs://<server>:/<path> /<localpath>", a snoop shows the traffic is all passed on port 2049. Haven't implemented it yet to test this though.

What do you mean by copy?  I thought the i cloud did that automatically for you.  That's what I don't understand.

  • Socks proxy call  from a weblogic server across the firewall to an external program

    Hi,
From our weblogic server, we are trying to connect to an external
program outside our firewall through SSL. The SSL connection is being
tunneled through a socks proxy in the DMZ. (We have not yet made it
work so far. Currently, we are trying to make it work)
From the weblogic bean, we are doing the following
    System.setProperty("socksProxySet", "true");
    System.setProperty("socksProxyHost", "w.x.y.z");
    System.setProperty("socksProxyPort", "1080");
Not that weblogic bean is the initiator of the connection and it talks
to a program outside our firewall.
My question is, will this kind of system level setting in the weblogic
server have any negative impact? This is because, RMI is over sockets
and weblogic might be talking to its internal components through
    sockets.
Is it advisable to have such socks related setting the weblogic bean
    level?
    thanks,

  • Clustering across a firewall

              Hi,
Would like to know what protocol can be used thru a firewall when the web server

Open the ports. Tunneling would be pointless for this exersize.

  • VLAN Tagging across from firewall to 2 SG-300 52 Switchs

I need some assistance in setting up VLAN's (802.1Q) accross two switchs, I want the same 2 vlan's on both switchs, how do i configure them to be connected and pass both vlan's traffic.
    My setup
    Internet - Firewall - Switch1 - Switch2
VLANs from firewall are tagged at 3 and 8.Single port out from the firewall
The first switch is simple enough, port is connect at port 52 and configured from both vlan's then the individual ports are either on one or the other.  The question is how do i connect the second switch so that it can also do both vlans.  Assume I connect switch1 at port 51 to switch 2 port 52.  Do I configure both ports to be on the same VLAN's. or do i setup LAG's. All too confusing.

You have already done the confusing part, sounds like you got the hang of it rather quickly. Now all you need to do is set the individual ports which you will be using to connect the switches. Since you only have 2 VLANs then I will guess that VLAN 1 is one of the two, which leaves you with the only ability of tagging the other VLAN.
So, switch1 interface 51 switchport trunk allow vlan 1 vlan 2 --- tag vlan 2
Then, switch 2 interface 52 switchport trunk allow vlan 1 vlan 2 -- tag vlan 2
Note that we are not tagging VLAN 1 which by default is the native VLAN.
    Good Luck!

If the missing media is on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod (and you purchased the media from the iTunes Store), you can transfer the media back to your computer using iTunes.
If the missing media is on another computer, you can transfer your iTunes media between authorized computers on your local network using the Home Sharing feature in iTunes.
If the missing media is an app, song, album, music video, or book, you may be able to download it again free of charge.
If you still can't find your missing media, you may need to restore from a backup, if possible.

  • Adobe 9.2 - Comments transferring across PDF documents

Has anyone had the problem of opening PDF documents for review online and comments were pulled from another document stored in the same database??
This only started happening with version 9.2 Professional installed and happens more often in IE then Firefox.  We didn't have this issue with Adobe 8.0.  The problem also only happens when multiple documents are opened within milliseconds of each other and the user doesn't wait until one PDF document fully loads with its comments.

You dont happen to have a link on Adobe's site some where do you?  The person I'm trying to make this work for says they have seen 5 GB pdf docs.  They dont believe me, so I will have to prove it to them.
Thanks so much for the info.

  • "Save AS' to Enterprie across firewall

    Hi All,
I am trying to save a report from Crystal Reports Designer into an Enterprise folder. The server is in a different network and I had to request the Network team to open up the port 6400 on the Crystal Server machine. But I am still getting "Connection Error". Is there any other port that I should open up if I want to use this fuctionality. I am using CR XI r2.
    Appreciate your help,
    Thanks
    Ajith

    Ajith,
Business Objects Enterprise reserves ports 6400 - 6410 by default.  Though the CMS may run on 6400, there are other ports involved depending on the activity being performed.  It is absolutely possible to assign which ports are used by the product.
Below are steps for assigning ports to work from client side applications (such as the designer) to reach through a firewall to the Enterprise server:  However, it is likely you can avoid the steps below if you allow bi-directional access to the ports 6400 - 6404
Configuring desktop products across a firewall
This section explains how to configure desktop products such as Desktop
Intelligence and Designer across a firewall.
To specify the request ports for BusinessObjects Enterprise
    1. Go to the CCM and stop the CMS.
    2. Right-click on the CMS, and then select Properties.
    3. Add the following entry at the end of the command field:
    -port <FQDN>:6400 -requestport 6401
    4. Click OK, and then restart the CMS.
    5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the Input FRS but add this entry to the
    Command field:
    -port <FQDN> -requestport 6402
    6. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the Output FRS but add this entry to the
    Command field:
    -port <FQDN> -requestport 6403
    Note:
u2022 Replace FQDN with the fully qualified domain name of the server running
    your BusinessObjects Enterprise servers.
u2022 You can use different ports than in the previous examples. However, it is
not recommended you use port 6400 except as is shown in the example
since port 6400 is the default port number for the CMS.
To make the required changes on the firewall
    1. Go to the area where you specify ports in your firewall software.
Note: Consult your specific firewall documentation for details.
    2. Open the following TCP BI-Directional ports between the server running
your BusinessObjects Enterprise servers and the desktop:
    u2022 6400
    u2022 6401
    u2022 6402
    u2022 6403
    3. Save your changes.

  • Transferring from Tiger to Leopard across 2 macs: need same username?

Hi, I just got a new (well second hand) Macbook running Leopard to replace my iBook G4 running Tiger.
The Macbook's main admin account is named, simply enough, "Admin" (short username and home directory 'admin' lowercase).
The iBook's main admin account is my first name.
Now, I read up on how to transfer files, and I decided I'm not going to use Migration Assistant, but transfer all data I need manually.
I have a wireless network and now it's being shared between the ibook and macbook. I already copied some files that way and it's easy and fast enough for me to do it like that, rather than through firewire or ethernet.
Also, I mainly need to transfer actual documents, and music, and movies, etc. - I don't mind creating new preferences and settings for applications on Leopard as I start using the macbook (also seen as they're running on different systems!), so I don't need to copy everything in the Library. I read that I can still manually transfer entire folders of application support data, like ical, addressbook, etc. Email is all on gmail so no problem there either.
But am I missing something? anything in the /Documents, /Music, or /Application Support folders that may create problems if transferred across two accounts with different names, and not just two different systems?
What about permissions? once I copy stuff to a new account, will that account fully 'own' the data that's copied?
In short - should I change the 'Admin' username on the macbook with leopard to match the old 'firstname' account on the ibook with tiger?
In that case, how should I do that - better to create a new admin account on the leopard macbook, or just change the name of the current one (I see it's possible on leopard now from System Prefs)?
One last thing - the macbook was reformatted completely just days before being sold to me, so right now I don't feel the need to erase the disk again and start from scratch. I don't know which erase option was used, but all the applications run fine and there's only basic preferences and no data in the home folders, so I can start using it straight away.
Is another complete reformatting still advised, so that I can set my own options? (like, I don't know, zero out all data the max amount of times?)
Cos if it's better to do that, then I wouldn't mind doing it now before I transfer all the files. (I have external HD for backup, so I could still do it later, but it'd be more of a pain).
I apologise if this seems like an obvious or redundant question, but I really am not sure what to do -- also because previously, whenever I upgraded from one mac to the other, I always used the same username, but the two macs were always running the same system, so I simply transfered the whole home folder from one machine to the other, something I guess I should NOT do now as it's different systems and different machines (PPC vs. Intel).
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    pepita,
I had no problems migrating an entire HOME folder from a PPC Mac to my Intel one(s). YMMV. What you want to avoid are any plugins, etc., that might contain PPC code. Since these tend not to be stored in one's HOME folder, you should be OK.
Even if you migrate folders piece-meal, it is far better to maintain the same short name. For this purpose, it would probably be best to simply create the account, making it an admin account, then delete the old one. One thing you want to be certain to do is get rid of any account with a name that may conflict with "system" accounts. In your case, this means that account with a name of "admin." That's a big no-no. Another one to avoid is "guest," especially in Leopard (which already has a working guest account that can be turned off and on).
Some applications maintain links to libraries based on their full path, which would include a user's short name. This is the main reason for keeping the same short name. If files/folders are copied from somewhere to a new account (while logged into that new account), ownership will automatically be correct.

  • Time machine hard drive for transfering files from 2010 MBP to rMBP

    Hello!
I have a couple of questions here!
I will be getting the rMBP in the next few weeks so want to do a bit of housekeeping before transferring across.
    1) What is the best way to clear my current MBP of files and applications that i dont use and are just taking up space? I currently have a 256GB hard drive with 8GB free - there should be no reason for this as my large audio/ Raw photo/ video editing files are on an external hard drive. So i think there must be a lot of flotsam and jetsam on there that needs to be removed as i don't want to carry that from computer to computer!
    2) Is Time machine the best option for this kind of service?
    3) Can anyone recommend an external hard drive for the job? I don't want to rely on thunderbolt ones at the moment so would it just be any usb hard drive seeing as Apple has sodded of firewire?
    Cheers
    K*

    OK, I'll bite:
    1) you can just delete the documents that you don't use by throwing them in the Trash. To delete apps and all associated files (and some will disagree with me or suggest another application) I recommend using AppDelete. I believe it's $13 or so but I have used AppZapper and AppCleaner as well but find that AppDelete finds all associated files.
    2) After you've rid yourself of your 'junk' files, I recommend using Time Machine on a dedicated or partitioned hard drive for backups. When you get your new machine, you can just use Time Machine to restore all of your settings, apps, documents, etc. For everything you ever wanted to know about Time Machine, see  http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    3) A USB drive is definitely the way to go. I would recommend the G-Drive series from Hitachi here. They have all sorts of connections, including USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. When Apple (finally) releases their Thunderbolt>FW800 adapter, you'll be ready. Others might recommend USB 3.0 drives for the speed but I've seen too many posts of, in particular, Western Digital USB 3.0 drives that have problems with the 2012 Macs to go the USB 3.0 route right now. Maybe someone will jump in and recommend a USB 3.0 drive that they actually have working on a 2012 MBP?

  • Updating itunes across to my ipod - unknown error (-69) keeps occuring

Hi, just recently i have spent hours transfering my albums across to itunes, setting up playlists etc.
So to add to my frustration with my ipod nano, now i am getting this error message "attempting to copy to disk ' mizz81 ipod" failed an uknown error occured (-69)"that appears even though i have tried the following:
*installed the latest version of software
*retried a different usb port (although i do not have a *high speed USB port - does this matter? my itunes used to tranfer across b4)
    *reset my ipod
    *re-started computer hundreds of times
*installed an ipod updater which doesn't seem to do anything, just freezes on the computer - although the task manager shows the programme is running, nothing appears to be happening.
*restored my ipod through the new updater option
    re-ran the ipod set up
HEEEELP!! i only got this ipod at xmas and it already freezes etc on me, now i cant even use the **** thing as i cant transfer my music on itunes across, currently it has only transferred across 30 songs, then the error occurs.
please explain any solutions you have quite clearly my PC mind is not that technical....
thank you, i wait and hope....

Disk write -69 generally refers to a specific file in your iTunes, that is not able to be copied to and played on your iPod. Try updating the iPod and watching the progress at the top, and see which file(s) is/are causing the issue. Try erasing them from your iPod library (click on the file and hit the delete button on your keyboard) and then try to update your iPod again. If you feel like you're getting the issue on more files than you ought to be, or if it doesn't get past the first file every time you erase the file, you might want to try following the steps in this article, and then updating the iPod again.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
Also, as a side note... on Toshiba's, the iPod generally performs better if the iPod is connected to the USB port on the side of the computer than one of the ones in the back.
    Best wishes
