Transfert of mpeg files from my handycam HDD DCR-SR90 to imovie

I use MPEG stream clip 1.8 to convert my mpeg files created on the hard disk of my camera into DV format and import them without problem in imovie HD 5.03.
Once I try to create a transition between two clips on my time line i observe vertical thiny black lines, making this option unusable....
I do not observe this with clips formats I could transfert directly in imovie without using MPEG stream clip.
An explanation to this and perhaps a solution
Thanks a lot... I am preparing a DVD and shoul show my movie next sunday

A related question, I have 19 years of video stored on external NTFS disk using a Windows XP computer. Most are in .avi format, but the last two years are in .mpeg format. I am unable to import them as movie files into iMovie. When I try, iMovie does not allow imports of these file types from the external disk. Total disk space is about 900 GB.
Any suggestions?

  • Convert .mpeg files from JVC Everio HD Camcorder for iDVD/iMovie use?

    Hello,
I am a brand new Mac user, but an experienced PC user. I have a JVC Everio 30gb HD camcorder that records video as .mod files, which can then be changed to .mpeg format to view. I want to edit these files and make home DVDs with iMovie and iDVD, but they say that the .mpeg format is not recognized. What do I need to do to use these .mpeg video files with these software programs?
    Many thanks in advance!

well... the iApps iMovie and iDVD are meant to work
    with firewire connected miniDV camcorders...
you lose the convenience of the iApps... anyhow:
    Streamclip
(free) is the weapon of choice, in case, your
    HDcorder stores as mpeg1...
for mpeg2 conversion, you need additionally the Apple
    mpeg2 plugin (20$) ...
    helpful?
    Thanks for the quick response!
Well, I think they are in mpeg2 format, but not positive. Anyway, I did away with miniDV camcorders because they transfer much slower to the computer than the HD camcorder...but now I get this issue! lol I guess that's what I get for switching to a Mac!
Is there any other way besides the $20 plugin to convert the file? Will the plugin lose any quality in the conversion process?

  • How can I play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam on quicktime?

When I try to play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam I receive an error message stating that a required codec is not available.  How can I get this codec and is it a free download?  Neither audio or video will play.

Thanks for your input.  To clarify a couple of things, I'm ultimately looking at editing my video from the handycam, hopefully with imovie.  In exploring how to do this I came across mpeg streamclip video converter for osx but then discovered that in order to install it with Lion, I'd need to download a mpeg-2 playback component.  From what I understand, this component is inherent in QT 10.1 with Lion and therefor you can't brink up a 'disk image' in order to install the video converter.  Sounds like I'd need to buy that.
As previously mentioned, there are three forms of QT support for MPEG-2 content:
    1) The QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) is required for use by QT 7 based applications (QT 7 Player, GarageBand, as well as, QT 7 based third-party applications like MPEG Streamclips. This component is not used required for nor used by the QT 10.1 Player or iMovie '07/'08/'11 apps.
    2) The Importer Component installed as part of your video editing software package. As previously indicated, this package handles the importation of content from various camcorders employing many different compression formats. It's primary purpose is to make the imported content "edit" compatible with the video editing software. In the case of "muxed" GOP MPEG-2/AC3 content, it decompresses/turns the P- and B-frames into I-frames which essentially makes the video QT editit compatible at the frame level without actually converting the video to a different compression format. This is a moderately fast operation which does not degrade the video quality. In addition, the importer component also converts the AC3 audio to QT "edit" compatible AIFF (Linear PCM) content and places both the video and audio content in an MOV file container. Since "muxed" GOP MPEG-2 content essentially synchronizes the audio and video content spatially, the last step in the import process is to add a time offset to minimize audio/video drift in the MOV file which synchronizes the multiple data tracks temporally with respect to an external timing reference. The result of this operation is QT edit compatible content in an MOV file container that is playback on any system having iMovie '07/'08/'11 installed. That is why I always recommend using this work flow for content still located on the camcorder.
    3) The QT 10.1 MPEG-2/AC3 GOP support appears to be built into the app or only accessible using the app and not available for use by either QT 7 or iMovie applications. This content is not QT edit compatible at the frame level (i.e., the manner in which all Apple video editors work).
    4) In the case where the "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content has already been removed from the camcoder and you can no longer "import" the content as per option 2 above, purchase of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component and use of the MPEG Streamclip app provides, in my opinion, the greatest degree of secondary functionality. In this case you have the option of demultiplexing the original content to M2V and AC3 content or paired M2V and AIFF elementary stream files or conversion of the content to any QT editit compatible audio and video compression combination including "Pro" editing codecs if FCP is installed on your system.
    5) With regard to the installation of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component, you have three options:
    a) You can install the component on a pre-Lion system and then copy it to your Lion system.
    b) You can download the MPEG Streamclip "beta" package and us the "helper" software to install the component directly on the Lion operating system.
    c) You can us an app like Pacifist to extract/install the component directly to the Lion OS platform.
In any event, remember that this component is not supported by the QT 10.1 app nor is AC3 natively supported by the QT 7 app and so you will have to use the MPEG Streamclip app to both make use of this component and provide app support of the AC3 audio which can then be "bridged" for use by QT 7 based apps.
All this being said, when I decided for the first time to just open my video in QT 10.1 (which is a .mpg file) it wouldn't open and the error said that a required codec wasn't available.  The file is .mpg and info states it is a mpeg-2 video, AC3.  I have VLC installed and can view the video with that, but am just frustrated as to why QT 10.1 won't play it (as I believe it should, since the file is a .mpg).
As I have repeatedly stated, I consider QT 10.1 "a work in progress" and have given up trying to guess why it works in some cases and not in others. In some cases, files sent to me having the problem you describe suddenly became playable in QT 10.1 after using VLC to copy the data from the original file container to a new program stream file container (i.e., not conversion was applied—just the copy of the original data). You can try this for playback purposes but it will do nothing for your editing work flow unless you plan to us QT 10.1 to convert the content to H.264/AAC for editing in which case HandBrake or MPEG Streamclip (with QT MPEG-2 Playback component) would probabaly work on the original file. (I.e., I prefer using a low-compression, high data rate compression format at highest video quality setting as an "intermediate" editing format to preserve as much of the original quality as possible.)
One thing I also noticed, there is no QT file in my library (I didn't move, delete or change anything, just looked to see if I could find the file as mentioned on another forum, but it wasn't there).  Not sure if this has a connection as to whether the .mpg file can be played with QT 10.1 or not.
If you are referring to an MOV file created by importing the content directly from the camcorder, then it will be located in your iMovie "Event" folder, the location of which will depend on which drive you assigned it to. Such a file sould already be both playback and editable in QT applications.
Any other input would be much appreciated.  Am I missing something from my QT 10.1 that should have  been installed?
I believe that covers just about everything. Since QT 10.1 is the original version installed by the Lion OS installer, there have not been any updates to it and, unless you have been messing around deleting things in your QT component folders, there is little probability that anything has been deleted, removed, or misplaced during normal system use. What I normally recommed is that you keep QT 10.1 installed and install the Lion compatible version of QT 7 (v7.6.6 if not already installed) to maximize your QT playback capabilities between the two. In fact, I tend to use the QT 7 "Pro" player for most daily "quickie" edits and still consider it the more useful of the two utility-Players.

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • How can I convert MPEG files (stored on a PC) to use in iMovie on my Macbook Pro?

How can I convert MPEG files (stored on a PC) to use in iMovie on my Macbook Pro?

Get a free app called MPEG Streamclip.
    Available here.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag your clip or clips into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to export the clips in Apple Intermediate Codec.
Sometimes, MPEG2 clips also require that you install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need this. This is available from Apple for $20.

  • Restoring iTunes files from an external HDD?

I recently began receiving S.M.A.R.T. warnings of imminent failure from my hard drive, running XP SP3. I copied my Music folders and iTunes folders to an external drive just before my computer failed. Checked the external drive and everything was there...Audible books, iTunes Audiobooks, music (both purchased and ripped from CDs), TV series and quite a few movies. So I was feeling fairly confident that I had saved my extensive and expensive iTunes multimedia Library.
Purchased a new hard drive and installed Vista, SP1 64 bit Home Premium on two WD drives striped in RAID 0 without incident, installed iTunes and began the task of moving my collection from the external HDD back to my computer. I used the "Add Folder to Library" choice in iTunes as my preferences were set to manage my manually manage my downloads.
All went well and after quite awhile I had most of my collection moved into iTunes on the new hard drive. Then the rot set in. I disconnected and removed the external hard drive and settled down to play some music. Instead of music, I received an error message. An exclamation point appeared in front of the track I wanted to play and the message in a box said, "The song (title inserted) could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to try to locate it?" I hit cancel and tried several other titles until it sunk in that while the titles appear in iTunes, they won't play. Also much of the information in "Get Info" is grayed out, however, the size and type of the file is displayed along with bit rate and sample rate, but no music will play.
Next, I reattached my external hard drive where I had stored the files before the hard drive failure and magically, every single song, book and movie played perfectly.
So...I need some help in how to move not only the titles but the content from the external drive to the new install of iTunes. First post, I hope I'm in the right forum. If not, please direct me there. Thanks and all the best, Daisy

I did not rear all but the "add to library" is where the problem resides. You should have just copied your files to the hard drive (assuming this is the SOURCE you want itunes to point at) then use "add to library.

  • Recover Files From TimeMachine ? HDD mounted in Caddy.

    Hello Apple Form,
I will try and include as much information as I can in my first post.
I was using the apple time machine ( Model A1254, the flat white 1T version ) for backups of my 17" macbook pro using Mountain Lion.
My macbook was stolen and i didnt replace it for a few months but eventually bout a 23" iMac running Maverick.
This is where my problem started, I could see my backup filkes from my Macbook but they were greye3d out, after weeks of trying to sol;ve this i basically gave up and boxed the TM.
Later i needed to access files from work so i made an apointment at the manchester UK genius bar, they could not help me, so i brought it home again. ( must let you know that i only visited the UK as i live in China )
In the end after more than a year, i decided to remove the HDD and mount in an external caddy, after doing this drive mounted as 2 partitions, i could see sparse bundle files but did not know how to open.
This morning i mounted the drive, the three partitions loaded but i could not see any files, the disc would not unmount so i manually removed the cable.
I searched online and downloaded a trial version of Data Rescue 3, but when i tried to mount the disc i got this message. " the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer " initialize ( i did but repair function is greyed out ) ignore or eject.
now my disc wont even mount, ( i tried rebooting imac but same message )
I have just started a new job and some of my technical data is here and i need it urgently.
Please can anyone help me here, im tearing out what little hair i have left.
    Sincerely
    Darren

At this point I'm not sure what to suggest. Is it possible to put the drive back and run Disk Utility Repair Drive?
Your new computer comes with Apple Care. You can call for free support and Apple might be able to suggest a fix since it was an Apple Time Machine drive.
I suggest you start a clone backup. You'll find it easier to actually see files stored on the drive. A clone is also bootable where Time Machine is not.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.

  • How to transfer video files from Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 to Mac?

How do i transfer video files from a Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 to Mac?

First suggestion would be to read your manual that came with the camea for proper cable use for transfer.  The iMac has a FW800 port and also USB2.0 port.  Once connected you can import them into iMove and edit them from there.  Some Sony codecs may require converting.
Firewire Cable is first needful thing.

  • Why can't I transfer files from usb internal hdd on my mac?

I am trying to restore a back-up (not via time-machine) from an external HDD dock, I've put an internal HDD in there.
I'm constantley confronted with this error: "The finder can’t complete the operation because some data in "8A5A0887.MOV" can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)".
I've tried to check the do not read/write radio button, but it's not even on. I'm afraid my disk is broken but I need those files really bad. Any ideas on transfering the files from the HDD?

looks like the file is corrupt

  • Extracting mpeg files from DVD studio pro burnt DVD

I burnt a dvd with studio pro a while back and have scince deleted the mpeg file. I want to make and edit and burn a new dvd. Is there any way to get my mpeg file back off the dvd so I can edit it?

You can use MPEGStreamclip to either demux the DVD streams (VOBs) back to their elements (.m2v and .AC3) which will create no loss in quality. You can also edit in MPEGStreamclip and then demux (though the editing process is a bit clunky).
Once you have the elemntary streams you can do a "down and dirty" edit in DVD-SP also.
Alternatively MPEGStreamclip can be used to convert the VOBs into Quicktime movies with consequent loss in quality as you will be converting from MPEG (a lossy format), edting and then eventually reconverting that footage back into and MPEG (thereby compressing again)
Best ting about MPEGStreamclip is it's free:

I should add as a caveat that you should only be using this on material that you own.

  • TC Extremely slow when copying files from an external HDD

I have a new TC, everything works well. Now I am trying to copy my iTunes library from an external HDD that is hooked on the USB of the TC. The directory is well over 300GB, the estimated time of completion is 70+ hours, that can be?!
Last week I copied all my pictures from the same external HDD to another drive via USB connection on my laptop and the directory was about 200GB, it took about an hour.
Is there anything wrong or is this normal?
    Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the quick answer. I was not clear enough though, I want to copy my iTunes library onto the TC from my external USB drive. The iTunes library is to stay on the TC so that I can always access it without the need of having an external HDD always connected to the TC.
What I do not want is the library on my MacBook.
    DOes that make sense?
    Yes, that's what I thought.
However you connect things, the copying process is done +*by your Mac,+* not the TC.
As I said, connect the USB drive directly to your Mac, and your Mac to the TC via Ethernet if at all possible. That will still take a while, since Ethernet is much slower than USB, but at least you won't have the data going back and forth through the TC. The data will go from the USB drive to your Mac, then to the TC via Ethernet.
If you leave the USB drive connected to the TC, the data will be copied from the USB drive, through the TC, to your Mac, then back to the TC's internal HD.

  • Audio won't play on MPEG files from camera?

I'm having issues with my new video camera. I want to use my final cut express to edit the videos, but the audio on the video files won't play. The videos play just fine, just no sound. I've turned the volume all the way up on my mac, but still nothing.
Any suggestions to make the audio work?
(I'm not the most familiar with computers, so simple/specific instructions would be best)

You have to separate out the audio and video tracks (referred to as "demuxing") of an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file before you import it into FCE. Try MPEG StreamClip to convert the MPEG files into an editing format (DV Stream, for instance). If your camera outputs MPEG-2, you'll also need the MPEG-2 Playback Component.
    Hope this helps.

Yes, personally I'd use mpegstreamclip (although it requires the QT mpeg2 playback component for mpeg2), there are plenty of other converters many of which are free though.
