"Transient resolver failure" in Pacman

I've searched for this and found a couple of threads, but none seemed to be my problem and/or their solutions didn't seem to fit... Or maybe I missed a thread about this that would fix my problem...
When I run "pacman -Sy" as root, everything works. If I run "sudo pacman -Sy" I get a "Transient resolver failure" error in every mirror pacman tries to connect too.
Any solutions for this?

I don't think I have limited network connectivity because I can browse (I know I said I couldn't browse, but now I can) just fine and I can use pacman as root. I've already installed some packages and updated the system, through pacman, with the current network configuration.
I am running Arch in VirtualBox though and don't have direct access to the internet...
EDIT:
But my internet connection is configured with the use of a proxy server in the host machine. I created a virtual network adapter in Windows and use that adapter as "host interface" in VirtualBox so I can point all proxy servers in the Arch guest machine to the proxy on the host.
However, I just tried NAT networking with VirtualBox and also "host interface" with my wireless NIC (not the virtual network adapter) and the results are the same. Maybe it's because the wireless is signal is not that great where I'm located, but the internet works fine and I can browser all pages. But I actually tested the mirrors that rankmirrors is failing directly in the host, and they are very very slow too. The fact that pacman or rankmirros don't use most mirrors is probably because the timeout value is set to a very low value cause when I open the closest mirror to me (which is in fact my university's mirror) it takes a lot of time to open the page in the host browser. Probably the signal's fault, the university is just next to me but i'm located in it's bounds.
However, I don't think this has anything to do with the fact that I can't use pacman with sudo as a normal user. Even the servers that work as root, fail with sudo pacman...

  • Transient resolver failure SOLVED

    Hi,
    I'm a noobie installing arch voodoo on my new sata box. I've enabled all the repos except 'testing' and on doing a pacman -Sy i get 'connection timed out. error: can't connect to ftp.archlinux.org'
    Then when I run pacman -S xorg I get 'transient resolver failure'.
    Then some files come through but I get lots of 'failed retrieving file' No route to host.
    I've read about moving a mirror up the list to see which one connects but have no idea how to do this.
    Could it be related to my problem?
    I have to say I did get Arch voodoo installed on my other box a few weeks ago and loved it but I'm having no luck with this install. Maybe the mirrors are down?
    Hoping the experts could point me gently in the right direction? Not the door
    Thanks

    Thanks arbrown,
    I learned how to edit /etc/pacman.d xxxxxxx and move a couple of mirrors to the top and I commented out ftp.archlinux
    I eventually got everything I need. xorg, gnome, gnome-extra, nvidia, mc and a few more things.
    I did xorgconfig and then edited /X11/xorg with my monitor settings and changed driver nv to nvidia.
    Rebooted and got the login screen 'yeaaay' but after logging in got a box saying:-
    System has no Xclients file, so starting a failsafe xterm session.
    Windows will have focus only if the mouse pointer is above them.
    To get out of this mode type "exit" in this window.  OK
    I hit OK and then get a small xterm log-in box in the top left corner of the screen.
    Now I'm stumped.
    I rebooted a couple of times and got the same.
    Nvidia splash comes up for a second just before main log-in screen.
    I feel I'm so near but so far to getting it working.
    Thanks:)

  • Unable to Update, Transient resolver failure

    Hi All,
    I am new to Arch, though not that new to Linux:)
    I have installed arch succcessfully .
    But i  get a bunch of Transient resolver errors  when i try to  pacman -Syy.
    the out put looks like this:
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from  archlinux.mirrors.uk2.net : Transient resolver failure.
    This gets repeated for extra and  community and for all these repos the errors keep repeating for all the mirrors i have updated in the pacman.d/mirrorlist
    The final errror is  failed to synchronize any databases
    1) Trying to update pacman says that it is uptodate.
    2) etc/hosts is correct  . i can ping local host. and my hostname.
    3) networking is fine as long as i can ping with IP address and my other computers  are able access the net. so  i am not sure where i am wrong.
    4)my etc/rc.conf  shows  the following
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    eth0="eth0 10.0.3.9 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.0.3.255"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 10.0.3.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)
    also please note that i am using the latest ISO
    i have already followed the following threads in this forum
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=47066
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43152
    but my situation is not resolved.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    supposed to be a space in the second nameserver (2. 45)????
    Sorry my bad.. no it is not supposed to be.
    Can u ping an IP address??? See if u can bypass the DNS part and make a difference. Can u ping a local networked computer?
    Yes i can ping my gateway and DNS in  internal network
    1) You are wanting a fixed IP?  You have it set up that way but thought I'd check...
    2) Does someone have to approve individual computer network access at your office? I have had that at several places of work.
    Yes i cant have a DHCP
    Yes they need to. But it is already approved. In fact this is a dual boot machine. i have FreeBSD 6.3 running on this machine and it can happily access all the websites.
    Can you dig google.com?
    i Cant . dig gives command not found is dig not installed in the base installation? ( i guess not ,by this)
    Thanks again

  • Transient resolver failure

    Hello everyone,
    i am connected to the internet over wifi using the wicd client. Browsing is no problem, but pacman -Sy results in:
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from archlinux.puzzle.ch : Transient resolver failure
    Thats quite strange since i can ping archlinux.puzzle.ch with success.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and regards...

  • Bunch of "transient resolver failure"

    I'm in the process of configuring AL, and after updating pac using the beginners guide, I can no longer update anything. Everytime I type pacman -Syu, I get a TON of "failed retrieving file 'xxx.db.tar.gz' from xxx : transient resolver failure" xxx's being core/extra/community and links.
    I can't post an exact log because this is all in console, I'm typing this from a different computer

    I tried pacman -S pacman earlier today (googled the problem a few times) and it didn't help, if I remember right it just spat out the same error. I would try again now but I don't have access to the computer right now
    Just use the new iso, it's the simplest solution I found.
    ... but I already got this far, I don't want to reinstall this whole thing if I don't have to (which I don't)
    pacman -S pacman nets:

    Hi,
    Please log on the CAS that SCOM indicated to see whether the OWA can be logged in successfully.
    If it works, Based on my knowledge, we can safely ignore this error. If you want to do more investigations, I suggest you to contact Microsoft support because we may need

    Oh, I was thinking 'pack' as in package. The network works, at least it does on the machine, and both this and the future Arch are connected to the same router. The network configuration process runs fine too. Before I can try pinging or printing outputs I need a way to leave this tty7 console.
    Edit: Wait no, alt 1 did it. Printing outputs and whatnot. I'll be right back
    Ok, pacman -Q pacman prints 3.3.3-5, I'm guessing this is the version? Ping doesn't work, that would explain the errors, how do I set the network up so it works?

  • [RESOLVED] How does pacman handle empty package directories?

    I started to ask this question after noticing that on a fresh arch64 install, I can't mount usb, because /media does not exist. This directory belongs to core/filesystem. After running pacman -Qk, it also turned out that extra/hicolor-icon-theme lacks some empty dirs:

    Notice, that the two sets of missing dirs in hicolor-icon-theme are different between two installations. The problem is that on the first installation ca-certificates is OK So, it appears that pacman randomly ignores empty directories in packages.
    There was a timely thread at pacman-dev (http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 12554.html), where a similar issue was reported, but without any conclusion...
    Any ideas? Thanks

    Several folk had the same problem after upgrading to KDE 4.6; no one seemed sure precisely what the culprit is.  I'm gonna try and reproduce this and check for/file a bug report.  You may have maimed two birds with one stone, Leonid.I
    If you mean hal, then at some point, it creates a data file /media/.hal-mtab, which on old installations (that went through a lot of ext media mounts), saves the dir, even if hal is removed. Of course, a separate question is why does hal contain /media. But otherwise, Allan is right: there is no natural good way of fixing this pacman behavior.

  • Power failure during pacman sync - recovery?

    Hi,
    Due to a flaky power brick, my laptop died suddenly amid a large upgrade run (kde-4.10.1 and a few other bits). After reboot, I found that lots of files were present but empty, and that pacman doesn't see them as owned by any package (when I know this is erroneous). I was tipped off to this by ldconfig (when invoked during the subsequent run of pacman -Syu) telling me lots of the KDE libs were empty.
    I dealt with all the libs identified there by identifying each one's owner (guesswork, since pacman -Qo returned nothing) and running pacman -Sf for each package.
    However, I've got no way of knowing what other files are borked. I just found kdialog also affected, and it looks like some wallpaper images too - KDE starts, but I dread to think what else is missing.
    Can anyone suggest how I can fully recover the situation? Many, many thanks in advance.

    Hi cfr, thanks for the reply.
    Both suggestions helped along, though I think I must have already dealt with most or all of the packages that were in mid-upgrade (or so recently the disk hadn't sync'd yet?) when the crash happened. Here's the list of empy files courtesy of find, with a couple of snips for brevity:

The many empty .libs in libreoffice seem odd, but I ran pacman -Sf on all its packages and they remained empty so I assume this is expected.
    However, if there's anything else in that list that shouldn't be empty, do please sing out.

  • No ping / traceroute / google earth since Pacman Syu today

    Hello,
    I did a pacman -Syu this morning as I do most days.  To be honest I can't recall precisely what was updated (kernel headers, glibc not sure what else - sorry).  I am now finding that while I can surf the web / be on IRC / dowload my e-mails - some things are broken.  I am not sure if they are related, but they were all working very recently. I use pan for usenet and it is giving me "no such process" when trying to contact my news server.  whois is giving "Temporary failure in name resolution", ping and traceroute are is giving "unknown host" on everything, and google earth "cannot contact  authentication server".
    I have not done anthing to my network settings or router, and other boxes using it can still (eg) ping out.
    I am nervous about trying a reboot in case I lose the connectivity I have, because I really need this box functional on the net at the moment.
    I am baffled.  Any ideas please?
    Added by way of edit : - I had both Firefox and Opera open. I tried closing Opera and on restarting it cannot connect to the net. I suppose that I will lose connectivity with other applications if I close them.
    Second edit : So I got my head out of my rear sufficiently to read the pacman.log. Todays upgrades were :

    I don't know what could cause this apart from glibc.
    I am also wondering whether this is the related to the issue metalforever reported earlier today with his "transient resolver failure"
    It makes no difference to run as root btw.

    I found that the problem was a DNS one.  ping etc worked if I fed it IP addresses instead of domain names.  I am using pdnsd, which seemed to be working so far as I could tell.  The daemon was running and "pdnsd-ctl dump" output the contents of what seems to be a valid cache.  I changed /etc/resolv.conf to stop using pdnsd temporarily and my DNS came back.
    I still don't have the faintest idea why this problem has arisen.  I am too busy to try taking it any further at the moment.  Maybe I should cross-post this in the networking forum.

    Server = http://code.toofishes.net/packages/eee

  • Is this pacman error ?

    Recently installed Arch and tried to run pacman -Sy and got the following error:

    I am using adsl connection to connect to internet with pppoe.
    ifconfig eth0 returns link up status with no packet loss.
    ip address is dynamic and provided by the service provider.
    /etc/resolv.conf has no name servers inserted.
    I think the error lies in resolv.conf.
    Please advise.

    varaahan wrote:I think the error lies in resolv.conf.
    Do you mean that resolv.conf is empty? If so, that is your problem. Your DNS servers should be in that file. I don't know how pppoe works though, so I cannot advice on how to configure stuff, but I think it should be possible to obtain the DNS servers from your ISP (because you get your IP from them too).

  • Pacman and xorg

    Hi
    1 - pacman is working as I managed to install midnight commander with pacman -sy mc
    2 - pacman -S xorg does not work. Neither does pacman -Sy. The system reports that xorg is not in the sync db
    I have seen in response to pacman -sy that core, community and extra repository listings are downloaded - and that the system does become updated (including pacman herself).
    Ok wise people - what do I try next?
    Best Wishes;
    john./
    newbie to Arch, used debian for 5 years plus now..

    Shining, Cerebral, thanks for your replies.
    pacman -Sg does indeed list all goups and xorg is missing. So I will switch mirror, run pacman -Sy and see!
    aaha! The GB repositry at manchester.sch..... perhaps is incomplete. I have commented that out, and am using repository in france. It looks as though it is going to work now.
    Just as a newbie point - I have not found a really useful guide to pacman anywhere  -  just many posts etc. The how-tos int he wiki seem to be fine if it all goes to plan, but did not provide the info you good fokk were able to give me.
    France is giving me some 'transient resolver failures' probably a router dropping packages somewhere.. OK maybe i need to run the select utility which packman has to find nearer repository.
    Thanks!
