Transition Connected Clips?

When adding a transistion in FCPX, apparently it can only be added to the primary storyline.  Is there a way for the transition to also affect connected clips that overlap the storyline at the time of the transition?  Or, do I need to export the project up to that point (in effect, merging all the layers into a single clip) and then import the exported movie file into a new FCPX project for applying the transistion?

I'm guessing you cannot create a secondary storyline which includes the primary storyline, only connected clips?  (Inferring that from Apple documentation, since they don't specifically say one way or the other, but all the examples contain only connected clips.)  So I selected only 2 connected clips in my project and tried to make a storyline from them, but as you can see in the screenshot the command is disabled.  No combination of clips I select enables the Create Storyline command.  However, the compound clip approach is working beautifully for my transition, and nicely collapses everything down into one clip.

I'm trying to break apart a compound clip and it is giving me an error......' The selected item contains at least one transition , if you click break apart , the transitions will be removed from the resulting connected clips .......
all compound clips have transitions ...big deal....what does this mean then??

We all are unknown to each other, many don't even have real names....this arguement can go on and on without any responsibility of decorum ....I will in future try to find answers to questions on other forums before coming here,
it's just a kind point of view that everybody who is thinking that I'm asking questions just to have fun and not searching is wrong because I do that..15-20 questions till now cannot teach you FCPx where I have completed an entire project with fx, titles and music..infact I always type the question first on google...
Secondly this episode has taught me a very big lesson ...that modesty is the most stupid trait....till my last post I was having long discussions with the best people on this forum and the way they were discussing things with me there were times when they realized that certain things were new problems , certain problems couldn't even be solved ....as nobody had an answer to it....but all this started after my modest reply of saying 'I don't know anything' before which there were 16 and 11 replies to my posts and some guys have gone out of the way to find work arounds for me .....so infact you are abusing their participation in my posts by saying that my questions were lazy questions, I posted a question with the least number of words only when I felt every search in google comes in the form of a long indirect confused question and nobody has written a smaller to the point problem....now no matter if you think I shouldn't have done that but I know lakhs of people will at once get to the exact problem...Thanks for your help.I have seen the posts of you all and seen there are several points that have been raised which I started learning fcpx with and can help those genius people.....I will keep in mind what you said and take extra initiative to find out everything from elsewhere before shattering egos here. But for your help in am better informed than before so thanks.Just one request if you don't want plz don't answer to my questions but STOP insulting people who were were a part of those lazy questions why are you pulling everybody forcefully in your boat ?.It is funny that that the interest which a particlar group had in a problem is contineously being tagged as generosity and kindness of helpless, employed , forced , bound social service guys....it is not so ...they answered because the question excited them...don't glorify your prejudice by firing guns from their shoulders..they can take care of themselves, don't make gangs here, talk alone if you have a point.....thankyou.

  • How do i hide a connected clip so that i can see the master clip underneath?

I am attempting to finalise a wedding video.  For some reason the XML output gets scrambled in the transition between Final Cut Pro X and Resolve, losing all the in/out points in those clips which were part of two continuous hour-long movies (the master clips).  The audio was scrambled at the same time.
So I have reconstructed the clip sequence in Resolve, restoring the correct in/out points and I have removed the audio altogether.  I cannot export this back to FCP because the in/out points get scrambled again, so I have exported the timeline as a quicktime movie.
Now, in FCP Pro X, I have the Quicktime movie sitting as a connected clip above the original FCP Pro X timeline.  But it is not quite in synch and I guess the edit points are not always frame for frame correct.  To match up the new and old timelines I would like to be able to turn the connected clip on and off - but I can't see how to do this and I am not sure it is even possible.
I can skim the master track but this is very cumbersome.  Is there any way to turn off the connected clip as one would do in a normal editor with tracks?  Or is there a better way to align various points in the two tracks?

Ha. great!  Thanks for that.  I did know that!  But I couldn't find it by searching the manual and I have spent the last week immersed in Resolve so I have forgotten all the FCP shortcuts already...

  • How to turn snapping ON on the connected clips ?

    Hi all experts,
On the primary/main video "track", I want to connect a series of connected clips. But these connected clips are not snap to each other. There are gaps in between them when I enlarged the timeline.
How to I turn the snapping ON ? For some reason, the secondary story line does not have the famous "magnetic" effect.
    Thanks

Why would you want connected clips to snap together?
The Storyline is your main 'timeline' and connected clips are added to it precisely where you want them. There's no point in them snapping together.
    Or is there?

    Hi Andy,
I am trying to do this:
    http://www.vimeo.com/29528335
See, the pictures at the backround ? They are series of pictures with ken burns effects & transition between clips. The clips must snap together otherwise they will be a moment of "black gap"
So, this cannot be done in FCPX ?
    Thanks

  • How to dissolve from a connected clip

I want a disolve from the end of my connected clip back to my storyline,  I'm stumped on how to do that.  Suggestions?

I do this all the time.  Simply make your connected clip into a storyline using Clip/Create Storyline while that clip is selected.  Now you can apply transitions like dissolve.  If you are above your primary storyline clips, obviously your connected clip will show instead of the primary clip during preview/playback.  Simply drag the dissolve transition to the place on your connected (now converted to storyline) clip.  After a little background rendering it will dissolve smoothly into the primary storyline clip.  Be aware, however, that if you use a transition like "fade to color" the video of the connected clip will fade to black (or other color) and take the primary storyline clip below it along with it, blanking out both for the duration of the fade.  Dissolve works great when you convert your connected clip to a storyline.  Best Wishes.

  • I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?!

I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?! Any ideas?

I am assumming you are working with "connected clips" which are either above or below the main storyline "track" (the one you put your first project clip onto when you started the project). You can only add transitions to clips that are on either the primary storyline or on a created storyline.  Select the clips you are working with then choose the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection. Make sure snap is set to assure your clips are really butted up against each other.  Then apply the transitions.

OK, I understand what you mean now! I assumed you were asking about the normal Fade In or Fade Out using the transition from the Transitions panel. But I guess you mean the Fade function specific to a Cutaway. When you double-click on a Cutaway the Inspector opens. Here you can set the Cutaway Fade duration. But as you say, it only provides for both fade in and fade out as one operation - you can't set the fades individually (it's both or nothing).
BUT, try the method outlined by Karsten Schluter above. It will give you the same effect and will enable you to fade either side of the Cutaway (or add other transitions).

  • Can't drag transitions or clips in FCPx 10.0.6

    Hi,
After working in FCPx for a while, at some point, either after deleting a transition or something, I lose my ability to drag transitions or clips to the time line. I don;t get the hand pointer or anything. I just can't 'pick them up' to drag them.
I am using FCPX 10.0.6 and OSX 10.7.5 on a dual CPU, Gen 2, 8 Core Mac Pro with Raid drives and a 5770 HD Apple ATI, 12GB Ram.
    Workarounds
    - If I restart FCPX I can go to the same cut and easly drag and drop the transition.
    - If I right click the transition and set it as default, I can add it using command-T.
    - When I can't drag clips from the even viewer, command-E works and then I can re-arrage them in the project timeline.
What I am hoping here is for someone to say "Oh you are inadvertently putting FCPX into 'non-drag and drop mode', just press command-something to get your drag and drop back."
It is an annoyance, but due to the fact that it works after FCPX restart with exactly the same project and process I think it may be a bug or I am getting into some mode.
    Thanks, Greg

    Try trashing your Preferences.
This is commonly used as a remedial procedure in Applications like FCP X where preference files occasionally get corrupted and can cause unusual problems.
The simplest way to do it is by using Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion. (Free App).
With Preference Manager, you can back-up your existing preferences before trashing them, so that if the Preferences were not the cause of the problem, you can restore them with a mouse click.
This is the link for the latest version - there are links to older versions on the right of the page.

  • "Move, trim, or delete clips in the primary storyline without affecting connected clips" doesn't work here

Move, trim, or delete clips in the primary storyline without affecting connected clips
That’s just what I was waiting for!
But it's very difficult for me to use this option
First af all the choice of the "Grave accent", which isn't present itself on the Mac keyboard, is somewhat strange in my opinion.
So, according to my keyboard viewer, to get grave accent I have to use alt-\ or alt-9, which is itslef too complicated.... Couldn't they program a simple modifier key (alt, or command, or ctrl...)?
Anyway, in both cases I get strange behaviours.
Infact I get alert sound, which meanes something strange is happening, and the behaviours are not what I want...
    Any help?
    Thanks

You can set that key to something else that suits you better.
(just as you can customize keyboard shortcuts all over the application, changing and adding shortcuts as you wish).
The name for this command is "Override connections".
Go to  Final Cut Pro->Commands. This will open the "Command Editor".
In order to not mess with the default set of commands, first make a copy by selecting "Duplicate..." in the popup menu at the top left of Command Editor. Call this something meaningful (or leave it as "Copy of default").
Enter "Override connections" (without the quotes) into the search box at the top right. Now you can enter an appropriate keyboard shortcut for it.
(Note: if you choose something that is already assigned to a different function, you'll get a warning dialog box)

  • How to apply transitions between clips in the same track?

    Hey guys,
I'm in Uni on Final Cut Pro 5 and all the videos and discussions tell of how to apply transitions between clips in the same track.
I like to have my clips on different tracks so that I can overlap them at specific points but I don't know how to do this?
If I have track one. . .which ends. . .and have track 2 beginning below that (and have it overlapped for a few seconds) I don't know how to enable the transition at the point where track 2 begins.
    Can anyone help?

    Yep I understand that.
Let's say I overlap track 2 as I don't like the beginning of it. . .so I want the transition from the end of track one to track two to occur in the middle of track 2 - should I just trim the track to the point I want the transition to occur as opposed to have it overlapping?

how do I make transitions between clips smooth?  Right now, when I play my video in imovie, the clips freeze or jump between clips.

Have you tried sharing the final movie using the Share menu, or, alternatively use FILE/FINALIZE PROJECT?
The final product shouldn't have any lag. iMovie itself should not have any lag, but could depending on your Memory and hard disk configuration.

  • How to do range selection for connected clips?

How to do range selection for connected clips? Whenever I press I or O, it only selects the primary storyline. I want select a portion of the connected clip and trim it.

If you're using the 10.1.x, and if you set the playhead, so that the circle is over the connected clilp (you don't even need a range selection OR have the clip selected) you can type Option - [ to trim from the beginning of the clip to the playhead; you can type Option - ] to trim from the playhead to the end; or if you do set a Range selection, you can type Option - \ (backslash) to trim both ends off the clip preserving the range selection.
If that circle isn't over the connected clip you require (perhaps you have a stack of clips) then you will need to click on the clip you need to have selected for the trim operation.

  • Why new final cut X is so restrictive connected clips? I do not see benefit.

I am coming from final cut 7 and I have no idea why new final cut X is so restrictive in having primary storyline and connected clips. I loved how in FC7 all clips were independent in timeline and gave you freedom to move and organize your clips however you wanted.
Now I have to take extra steps or jump through hoops to move clips around becaused they are connected to primary storyline. Like I have to create secondary storylines. Really??
I do not see any benefit to connected clips except that it automatically follows primary storyline when you move primary clip around - which most of time I do not want it to do.  We should be able to turn this off because I do not see any benefit to connected clips with primary storyline.
FCX is dictating how we organize clips on timeline which is way more restrictive than FC7. This is just wrong.
Also bring back enable tracks. Why in the world did they remove tracks. Tracks work and is easier to visualize and organize clips in timeline. Like if I wanted to disable audio or video for a track it was just one click in FC7.  Now there are extra steps in FCX  They should enable this for people who are use to tracks.
They should really talk scold to whoever mad scientist who wanted to make FCX more restrictive than FC7 and impose their workflow on everyone else.
I like magnetic timeline where you can move clips around and other clips will automatically move to make room for it. This save time.
So can we disable connected clips and let us enable tracks just like better FC7?

The first Quantel NLE, back in the 80ies, was mimicing the Moviola - showing vertical stripes of 'film'.
So, you could ask "Why have they changed to horizontal?"
On editing film, you wrote with some white wax pen an X onto it, to indicate a dissolve....
So, you could ask "Why have they changed that to drag'n drop grey boxes?"
On recording they hold a clapper into the cam, to 'sign' the time-code.
So, you could ask "Why have they changed that to meta-tags, hidden invisible in the file?"
Aside doing compos ('Brady Bunch', '24'), there are no 'tracks' in no movie.
In any movie, there's always just a single storyline...
If you like to apply 'variations', get customed to FCPX' Auditions.
If you like to adjust cut-aways, get customed to the various trim/ripple/nudge options of FCPX.
If you like to pre-select clips, get customed to the Events-concept and its endless options (you can even abuse to create 'bins'!) to tag clips.
If you like to 'pre-comp', get customed to FCPX' compounds and their own timelines.
It is a different, a new way of editing. That simple.
As others told you: nobody forces you to adopt it.
There's AP, there's DaVinci Resolve .... and many others.
And you even can Position a clip...

  • Move the Connecting Clip line in Final Cut Pro X

I thought you could change the connecting line where the Connecting Clip attaches to the Clip on the Primary Storyline while keeping both in sync. Usually the Connecting Clip has the line at the first frame.
I can't find the command where you move that line. Was it in the manual?

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I don't want to move the Connected Clip itself.
I want to move the line (at the first frame of the Connected Clip) that connects the Connected Clip to the Clip on the Primary Storyline. If you do some edits at the beginning of the clip on the Primary Storyline then you could screw up that Connected Clip. If the connecting line is at the middle of the Connected Clip, those edits at the beginning of the "Primary" Clip won't affect the relationship (sync)  between Connected Clip and the Clip on the Primary Storyline.
Are you sure about the The "Break Apart Clip" command? It just breaks apart the audio and video  components into two separate Clips but won't move the Connected Clip to the beginning of the Clip on the Primary Storyline. At least that is how it works on my versions.

  • FCPX 10.1: why is some video clips shown with a connected clip icon ?

    Hi there,
I have finally updated to 10.1
But after conversion, in the browser, why are there some video clips shown with a connected clip icon ? And it doesn't play ?
    Any ideas ?

The edited project was 60 seconds making up an intricate title sequence involving 24 video segments and 48 png/ PSD files.  Had a brain storm and was wondering if there is anyway the the project could move to another event so currently going through all the event folders on my FCPX edit drive. I just can't see how a project can just vanish.
    Thanks for your suggestion.
