Transition from Windows XP to Mac OS X

I would like information on how to transition my lightroom library and photos from Windows XP to Mac OS X. I am concerned about maintaining my virtual images as well as library settings.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The interesting thing is that my Macbook Pro was upgraded today to Yosemite and I still have the spinning wheel on the start up screen before the login page comes up.

I have forgotten which key I need to press to offer the option of switching from Windows 7 to Mac os. Can anybody help? Many thanks.

Printing from Windows XP to Mac mini

Hi,
May i know who has a successful story of printing from Windows XP to Mac or from mac to window xp.
I have tried all the instructions in the book, and it doesn't work.
I am printing from my mac mini to our printer in the office who has xp on it.
The printer is canon i560 but it doesn't work.
Please share with me what your expereinces is.

Also make sure you have set up your windows computer to share your printer. I have my mac mini printing wireless through my us robotics router on my windows xp printer. Print with it all the time, never had a problem.

Migrating browsing history from Windows 7 to Mac.

I created a Firefox Profile and synced from Windows 7 to Mac.
Only a small amount of my browsing history was migrated (from 9 July 2013 onwards).
There are approximately 47 500 entries going back to September 2010.
I downloaded the History Export add-on and tried exporting my browsing history in the .html format. Firefox kept crashing and I could not complete this.
Is there any way to migrate my entire browsing history to my Profile and my Mac?

Transitioning a business from Windows Server to Mac

We are transitioning our business from Windows to Mac. Currently, we are running Windows Server 2003.
We have introduced a couple of Macs into the system (we plan to purchase only Macs going forward) and I am having trouble figuring out how to configure the Mac such that it can access the shared folders on the server.
Any ideas?
Any good reading that you can refer me to on the subject of transitioning an organization from PC to Mac?

If you're expecting your Windows login scripts to connect the network drives on your Mac then they won't work for you.
A simple Applescript can help you but it's not secure because it will store the password. Copy/paste either of the following lines into the Script Editor found in /Applications/AppleScript (of course, you'll need to modify it with your own information).
The first line assumes your server is running File Services for Macintosh:
mount volume "afp://username:password@servername/volume"
If your server is not running File Services for Macintosh then use the second line, which will connect your Macs as if they are Windows clients:
mount volume "smb://Workgroup;username:password@servername/share"
Create a new line in the script for each share you want to connect and then save as an application. This application can be saved anywhere within the user's home folder and it can be added to the user's login items.
Alternatively, you could look at using a better SMB client such as Dave from Thursby <http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html>.

We currently have a Windows 2003 terminal server hosted remotely, it's only function is to serve Quickbooks enterprise and to store documents, with a maximum of 8 simutaneous connections.
We would like to eliminate this service and do everything in-house with a Mac server. All of our 8 employees are now on Mac.
Here is my question: What would the ideal setup be? The problem is that Quickbooks is a Windows version. The Mac version is not as robust as we need so we need to stay with the Windows version.
Do we install Quickbooks on a virtual install of Windows on the Mac server using terminal service? Or should we install Quickbooks on each users Mac with virtual Windows and every file save, saved to the server without a windows install?

The quick answer is to move the server to you location. Now I am sure that statement alone will generate all kinds of responses. So I will attempt to explain my position:
1. Running QBE on a virtual server on a Windows system is not eagerly supported by Intuit much less running it on a virtual system on a Mac.
We would like to eliminate this service and do everything in-house with a Mac server. All of our 8 employees are now on Mac.
Here is my question: What would the ideal setup be? The problem is that Quickbooks is a Windows version. The Mac version is not as robust as we need so we need to stay with the Windows version.
2. The Ideal setup would be to have QBE running on a Windows Server (that you own and control) and continue to access it via RDP.

3. Unfortunately QBE is not designed to work in that manner – both QBE and QB require a ‘QuickBooks’ data server this in turn requires a Windows box of some type. Also are you using the SQL Version of QBE as this will also impact which way you should go.
4. Though you could install Windows on all your Macs the cost to do so would be more that purchasing a Windows Server and managing it yourself.

- $299 ea for Windows XP $2392
I did not include Windows Server /w TS CALs as you will need to purchase this regardless which method you select – though purchasing Windows with a server is considerably cheaper than buying retail.
Finally I can understand your desire to work in a homogonous environment, though I am concerned that the amount of time required getting QBE running within a virtual environment be it Windows or Mac and installing Windows on your Macs may consume more time than you may be able to take away from your business.

Moving iTunes from Windows to a Mac... for multiple iPods

I have just bought a new MacBook Air, and am facing a problem of how to move my current iTunes over to it!
The main problem is that I currently have 3 different iPods on the go (shuffle, video and iPhone) all with different music on them. At the moment I have managed to put an iTunes library for each of them on 3 different windows laptops/computers, but as I'm off to university I would ideally like to put all 3 libraries on my new MBA.
Has anyone got any advice on how the best way is to do this? Would a separate hard-disk work for moving the music over from Windows to Mac? Also I have no idea how you create 3 separate iTunes libraries on one MacBook!

The easy answer is to just drag and drop all her music files into the new iTunes Library on her new 12" PB.
Get them on media (CD/DVD) or however you want. My favorite method is to get both systems on the network, drag copies to a temporary folder on the desktop. Then the PC is out of the loop. And you have not commited to a MOVE or DELETE of the source at this point. Then, drag and drop the temporary folder into iTunes. As long as it is setup properly, iTunes will COPY the files as added, and ORGANIZE the files and folders for you. After all that, delete the temporary folder.

Can't copy some files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX over network

Hi,
I'm running the latest version of Max OSX v10.8.4 on a brand new Macbook Pro.

I am now trying to copy some files from my Windows 7 Pro (SP1) computer to my Mac, and have hit the following problems:
I can view my Macbook in my list of local networked computers on WIndows, but I cannot access it. Clicking on it causes Windows 7 to try and access it, but then I get a message after a minute saying the network path could not be found. However, if I manually enter the IP address of my Macbook in the Windows address bar (\\192.168.0.191), I can view and access all the shared folders. I can never access the Macbook via it's computer name (\\MACBOOK-ROB).
I cannot copy some files from Windows to my Macbook shared folders via Windows. There is nothing to distinguish these files from the hundereds of other files that I have successfully copied to my Macbook. They are pictures and music with no special characters in the filenames, not overly long filenames or folder paths, no access restrictions, or any other security restriction that I can see. However, every single attempt to copy these files to my Macbook results in WIndows reporting that access to the destination was denied.
I have tried both these above scenarios on WiFi and Ethernet, and the results are the same.
So:
Why am I unable to access my Macbook by it's computer name on the network? How can Windows see it, but not access it?
What are the limitations on transferring files over SMB that is (presumably) causing these specific files to fail?

I have a fix for inability to copy files. I had the same problem moving a lot of old files across my LAN from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. After confirming copy of some special file, I would get an error that terminated the copy operation, and info on the Mac side would show a locked folder.
I finally decided to eliminate all special files on the Windows side, before copying, by running
attrib -s -h -r /s /d [drive or folder]\*.*
in a command window. Running attrib /? tells what the arguments mean, but it doesn't explain that you need the *.* to make the command go through the hierarchy clearing the special attributes on all the files.
After I did that, and then used drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows (one on the Windows drive, on on the target drive on the Mac), the whole move operation ran to completion without stopping either for error or to ask for confirmation.
I do not have a fix for the inability to access some computers by name rather than by IP address. I'm looking into the possibility of activating bind on the Mac but I haven't done anything yet.
