Transition in FCP

Hello
I have started a project at home in iMovie.
I have exported by "Copy/paste" all clips.dv in a folder.
I'm working now on a friend's computer with FCP.
I'm importing all clips.dv.
I'm using drag and drop clips in the timeline.
My problem:
I can't put a simply transition "crossfade" between 2 clips.
If I cut a clip in two parts, it works, but not between 2 differents original clips.
Why? I don't understand.
All clips are in same format (.dv, Pal 25fps, 4/3), without sound.

Problems with Transitions in FCP Exported Files - How to Fix?

I have completed an HD 16:9 project which plays properly with transitions in FCP 5.1.4, but when I export it, the transitions have a momentary "blink" to black just as the they begin, and then they complete normally -- a very distracting annoyance. I tried several different transitions, and the same problem occurs. I also tried exporting to several different formats and the problem persists. I also tried applying the flicker filter and the deinterlace filter with no success. I would appreciate any help!

I would also check to make sure the frame rates between your media and sequence really match. This type of thing has also been seen when working with 24p DV50 material - renders such as transitions were showing time shifts and repeated frames.
If this is HDV, you might try isolating one offending transition, exporting the clips as AIC and rebuilding an re-rendering it just to see if it helps. If it does, you could probably use media manager to convert all of the clips in your sequence and reconnect automatically.

Transitioning from FCP to PPro - Control-v command

Hey guys,
I'm transitioning from FCP to PPro, and a shortcut that I use quite often is Control-V. This razorblades/cuts the selected clip/clips at the exact frame where the time indicator is sitting. Is there a similar shortcut for PPro? I know I can hit the Cut key and then click where I want to make a cut, but it would be much easier to simply hit a shortcut key stroke, and cut exactly on the frame without having to guess if the razor tool is on the correct frame.

XML file not taking transitions in FCP

I imported film into the only way I know how, through iMovie. I then exported it out as an XML file then into FCP. Started editing only to see none of the transitions I'd place between clips is staying. It just has a 'red X' come up when I am trying to apply the transition.
Don't recall having this issue. Is it the way I imported the film? Help!

Transitions crashing FCP

Hi Guys:
this morning, someing wierd started happening. Whenever I double click a transition, and it apears any transition, FCP quits suddenly. I can add the trans from either the effects tab or the effects menu; fine. But if I doule click, so I can adjust the parameters, boom. I tried FCP to trash settings, same result. any other suggestions?

your profile says you have FCP 5.1.2. Have you updated to 5.1.4 since then? Make sure you have. If that does not fix, try FCP rescue (google it). Also, do the transitions work without trying to adjust them? You may have another program that has conflicting components or plugins.

Only 24 transitions in FCP 10.1.1 ??

Hi,
I have recently had to deleted and reinstall fcp 10.1.1 and I only seem to have 24 transitions available (I seem to be missing flash/lens glare transitions).
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but can anyone tell me how to find these- I have used them in previous projects so when I replay the project now in fcp it just defaults to a black transition as it can't find the relevant flash/lens glare transition.
I have tried updating projects and events and fcp says that it could not find any projects or events to update.
Any help gratefully received!

Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem in FCP. Whenever I try to insert a transition between two clips it just gives me the little black x. I try to drag it out of the effects tab and into the timeline between two clips and normally it is supposed to highlight the area of insertion, but it doesn't do any of that. It just stays with the black mouse pointer and the small x under it. What is causing this? anyone please help!

Maybe FCP needs to take notes from it's infant son imovie.
No...if it did that it wouldn't be professional editing software. Total running time...show timing...is CRITICAL in the professional world. if FCP acted like iMovie, and pulled the clips closer together to allow the to have overlap and make the dissolve work, then that would mess with show timing and leave the editor pulling his/her hair out.
Instead, learn how to use this professional software properly. Or, if you like iMovie, use iMovie.

Shane's Stock Answer #1: Trying to add a Transition and get the error "Insufficient Content"
A full 1 second cross fade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a cross fade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip. Say you're trying to cross fade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a cross fade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the far edges of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 30 frames (one second) in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 15 frames before the cut, and try to go 15 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do. What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.

Transitions with FCP after bring clip to Motion

Here is my problem. I brought a clip into Motion, and applied some effects, etc...and it looks great so now it is in FCP. The next clip was not edited in motion, just a regular clip edited in FCP. When I apply a transition it doesn't let me change the length of the transition. I can successfully change the transition between 2 normal clips, but I'm unable to change the transition length between a clip that was edited in motion and a regular FCP clip. Any suggestions?

Did you export the Motion clip out of Motion, then import it into FCP? If so, then you lost your 'handles'.
Have you tried 'Send to Motion' from FCP...work on it there, then bring it back to FCP? That's probably the best workflow.
Either that or when you send a clip to Motion, make sure you include media prior to and after your known in/outs, so you have extra media to make a transition with, when you export it out of Motion.

EDIT - at the very least, you should be able to use a transition on your current Motion clip, but you'll need to make the transition work from within available media on the Motion clip...like 'beginning on' or 'ending on'.

Can't add a transition in fcp 7

Hey guys - I have two motion clips in fcp 7 and I know all about having handles and have even clipped away some footage to double check but I cannot add a transition between these clips. Any ideas?
ps I checked and have plenty of room for handles

Russ: I moved my inpoints and outpoints further in a but in actuality I already has several seconds of footage before the inpoint and after the outpoint to deal with.
Meg: I thought about that and zoomed in as far as I could and I didn't have any blank frames that I could see.
Btw, just for clarity - When I said that the clips are 'motion' clips - they came out of Apple Motion 4.

Pasting Transitions in FCP - Length ends up being 1 frame

Lately I've been having an odd thing happen whenever I try and paste any transition in Final Cut Pro - instead of it being whatever length it was on the original that I copied, when it is pasted it ends up being 1 frame in length. Odd thing is that this only started recently, and it is happening on both my work and my home computer, so it seems to be an upgrade issue.
And before anybody asks, yes I am sure that there is enough room/handles on either side of the clips for a transition. In fact, if I drag the transition to the same space/point, the transition will apply itself perfectly.
But if I paste the identical transition to the identical place, I get a sliver of the transition that is only 1 frame long. I can change the length of it manually (which is a pain in the butt zooming the timeline big enough to see it, much less click on it) and that works fine. But for some reason pasting a transition, be it one of FCP's standard (like Cross-Fade) or a 3rd party, whether it was copied from the Timeline or the effects window, results in the transition being 1 puny frame long.

I've experienced this from time to time, with no known complete fix.
Yes, it's very odd behavior...you could try trashing preferences.
The only solution I've found to work (inconsistently, BTW) is to 'drag' the ending edge of the outgoing clip away from then back to the edit point...likewise with the front edge of the incoming clip (don't 'move' the clips...just drag or roll the edge of the clip). Then, I'll paste the transition. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's almost quicker to zoom in and change it manually.
Sorry it's not a real solution.

Boris Red 3.05 Transition Crashes FCP 5.12

I never had problems with Boris FX, but after upgrading FCP to 5.12 nothing shows in the browser. I reinstalled Boris Red and Applied the patches from Boris site, it works when I applied the filter, but when I apply transition and double click on it than it crashes.
I called Boris Support for weeks, and finally they have sent me an email that made no improvement what so ever.
Does anyone know the solution?

I recently crossgraded from FCP5.0.4 to 5.1.2 on my Quad core G5 and my 17 G4 powerbook. Botis Title 3D completely crashes FCP on the G5 when attemting to create text. It works fine, though, on the G4 (???) I have trashed prefs, repaired permissions, reinstalled Boris only, reinstalled FCP. Apple tech support doesn't care! The Boris tech guy got so flustered with me he dropped his little headset on the floor. I have researched every applicable forum on the net and see that I am not alone. Notice that the first post in this thread is from early November. It is now almost February. No real solution. I love the "sibling" style behavior between the host app. co. (Apple) and the 3rd party co. (Boris) ..."It's not MY fault its HIS!!" "Is NOT" "Is TOO!"
I guess my problem is that I just need to pony up that $700.00 for Apple's "Pro applications technical support"

Is there some sort of Shatter Transition in FCP

I am looking for a transitions that shatters the end of one footage and the beggining of the next footage zooms in. Is there such transition or is there a method to do this. If I have to I can Manually zoom in the footage but I want the transition that shatters.

I guess a better way to describe it would be like a break through. I want it to look like the secondary footage was breaking through the primary.

FCP 5.1.4 no longer playing clips it used to play w/o rendering first

G5 2.7 Dual GHz PPC, 4.5 GB SDRAM, OSX 10.4.11
I haven’t used FCP 5.1.4 for quite a while. I digitized some home movie footage from miniDV directly into FCP 5.1.4. It plays back fine in the preview window. It plays fine if I open it up and play it from Quicktime v 7.6.4 (518.35). But when I put the FCP digitized clip in the timeline I get the red line indicating that it has to be rendered before I can see it play back in the canvas window. I tried to digitize new footage thru firewire directly into FCP with the same result – plays fine in the preview window and in QT. But it won’t play in the timeline / canvas window until I render it first. And the render file is twice the size of the original footage I digitized directly into FCP.
Also, playback is getting stuck on footage that used to play fine. The audio keeps playing alright, but the video gets stuck, then catches up and plays a bit, then gets stuck again, sometimes never coming back. If I export the file as a QT movie, the QT movie plays with the video getting stuck – I don’t know if it’s in the same places. But it makes exporting a waste of time as an option to “work around” the problem.
Did something change in FCP in the last year that I am not aware of? Like, maybe, FCP now upconverts / up-renders DV footage as HD footage as a default, or something like that? I used to just digitize 4:3 standard def footage into FCP, then drag it down into the time line, hit the space bar, and FCP would just play the files. Trim, delete sections, normal edits, and FCP would always play w/o rendering.
I don’t want to upconvert any of my standard def 4:3 home movies. I just want to digitize the footage thru / via DV, make some straight cuts, adjust low volume, put in some chapter markers, and send the edited home movies to Compressor so I can make DVD’s out of my home movies. I’m not even putting in transitions and FCP says I have to render the entire file from beginning to end!
I did add an iPhone to the scenario since I last used FCP. I noticed that the syncing that seems to go on constantly as a result of / related to the iPhone seems to reek havoc with FCP. So I shut auto-sync off. Now I have double everything in my iPhone again. But I’ll do whatever I have to in order to be able to use FCP to make DVD’s of all my old home movies.
I stopped using this USB 2.0 drive. The last time I tried to digitize something it was on an internal hard drive – separate from my boot drive, and not a partition of my boot drive, a separate internal hard drive, which should be even faster than the firewire 400 hard drives I used to use.
Please tell me if there is something I have to unselect to make FCP 5.1.4 just stay in Standard Def 4:3 so I can just edit my home movies without having to use 166% more hard drive space and wait for rendering on most everything I do.
If my session is corrupt and I have to start all over in a new session, please let me know whether there is a way to export the chapter markers that I’ve already painstakingly inserted on the home movies I’ve already struggled through, so I don’t have to re-figure, re-locate, re-name, and recreate them again. Even a printout of the chapter marker location times and the names of the chapters in simple text format would be better than having to recreate each and every one of them from scratch all over again.

As far as I can tell, they are not different, except for:
Aud Rate: 48001.8Hz on the older clip
Aud Rate: 48001.9Hz on the new clip
I cannot explain why the sample rates are not 48000 exactly. I didn't try to digitize them at the rates they digitized. The first, older clip came off of a miniDV tape via firewire from a JVC SR-VS30 miniDV / S-VHS deck. The second, new clip was digitized from the original BetaMax recording, in real time, through the same JVC SR-VS30 miniDV / S-VHS deck configuration, FCP set to DVDVCPRO50, the standard setting for DV that was the preset, that I have always used, using the miniDV deck as a "non-controllable device" source, recording into FCP in real time "Capture Now". Video transition isn't smooth

The quicktime>zoom, video transition in FCP, is not smooth when used on image file. Is there any way to fix this.
