Transition lengths

Can anyone help? After editing my movie clips and putting them in the time-line I cannot seem to keep a regular transition length. I have tried to set them to 5 seconds and although some do, others will default to 1 or 2 seconds and will not change even if I try to drag the edges. It's very messy as it also seems to alter the length of the movie clip, which then does not fit the audio. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Read this carefully Simon, as you are misunderstanding what is needed.
1. You could have 2 complete clips an hour long and if you tried to insert a transition it would not work. By "complete clips" I mean ones that have not had any material cut off the ends.
2. If each clip had one second cut off the end (that touches the other clip) you could use a 2 second transition. Cut 2 seconds off the ends and you can have a 4 second transition. Cut 3 seconds off and you can have a 6 second transition etc. etc.
3. There are 2 main ways you can cut material off the ends of clips. You can load them into the Viewer and make In and Out points or you can load them into the Timeline and cut bits off with the Blade tool and then delete the bits.
There are other ways but let's keep it simple!

  • How do you set default transition length?

Have dissolve as default, where do I go in order to tell what default transition length I want? Thanks.

Where is the Effects Tab? Sorry, am a rank beginner in FCP. You don't mean to go up to the dropdowns at the top "File...Edit...View..." and so on, and select Effects, because I'm not seeing any place to do that. Where's the Effects tab? Can't seem to bring it up. Thanks.

  • Transition length changes when timeline length changes

When I have a transition that's, say, 1.5 seconds and I extend the timeline, the transition will change in length so the motion looks ridiculously slow.  I find myself either spending a lot of time adjusting transition lengths or else finding ways to keep the total timeline length the same (to the detriment of the content).  Is there any way to "lock down" the transition length when I need to change the timeline length?  Locking the object with the little padlock doesn't do it.
    Thanks!

    Hi Amy,
Indeed that is possible, because it is locked to the end of the slide, agree, only way to change a locked item.
Understand that when having to copy slides, that will have different durations later on, you prepare the 'mother' slide, inclusive all the wanted effects before copying. For objects that are displayed for the rest of the slide, changing the slide duration will change the duration of the effects.
I do not exactly know what you need for your projects, perhaps an alternative I'm using often could help: Instead of copying the slide with all its objects, I'll set the objects that have to appear for the 8-10 following slides to show for the rest of the project, instead of for the rest of the slide. They will show up on each slide where they are visible with the same effect and the same timing, whatever the duration of the slide. Drawbacks: after those slide you'll have to hide them on the next slide (advanced actions on Enter Slide with lot of Hides), and when copying slides, use Insert New slide should copy as much as possible.
    Just an idea,
    Lieve

  • IMovie 08 transitions length...How do I change the duration of the transit

Believe me, I've tried Edit, set duration, apply to all transitions.. it won't stay at the time that I set it. Can I get some help out there?

I do have the same problems. I want to show some 10 pictures as a movie. Therefore I set the duration of all pictures to 0.4 sec and the transitions between to 0.1 sec. First I observe that not all photos have the same duration (some are 0.36 sec some are 0.5 sec ?!?). When I set the duration of all transitions to 0.1 sec then I get an error "Fell short of minimum" (which is not explained in Help) and the durations of the transitions are between 0.2 and 0.4 sec (regardless whether I choose to ignore ore cancel the request)
Help just says that the duration of the transitions need to be shorter than half the length of the shorter clip which I intend to have.
So to me this is a bug. Maybe you can report it to http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html

  • Matching slide transition lengths to audio track

I have a number of still photos that I want to run through starting and ending with a predefined audio track
Is there any way (other than trial and error) of adjusting the clip lengths so that they fit the audio?
In any case, when I try to adjust all the lengths with the clip editor and tick 'applies to all slides' it randomly assigns some lengths more or less around the number I choose (e.g. if I chose 3.2 sec - all appear to be between 3 and 3.4 sec, but many are different. I don't have snap to beat or anything on

The way transitions work is to borrow half the frames needed from the clip right before it and half from the clip right behind it. If some of your transitions are longer than this, it must add same frames. Also some transitions appear to need more frames than others.
Having said that, there is a way to get close, and you can fine-tune by trail and error. The trick is to convert everything to a common denominator, and for movies, that would be frames.
Since your name implies you live in Europe, I will give a PAL example at 25 frames per second.
    Let's say you have an audio track that is 3 minutes and 23 seconds long. This would be (3 minutes x 60 seconds/minute x 25 frames/second) + (23 seconds x 25 frames per second) = 4500 frames + 575 frames = 5075 frames.
Now let's say you have 69 photos in your movie. Then each slide would need 73.55 frames. You cannot have .55 frames so round up to 74 frames per photo. You can enter the 74 as the duration, or you can convert it back to time as 2 seconds and 24 frames.
Note: if you are not seeing frames, but are seeing tenths of seconds, go into imovie Preferences and check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames"
Another way to do this that can be very effective is to use the Beat Marker Feature of iMovie, and leave out transitions all together. Here is a [sample from Ian Parkinson|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Crs1Mx92js]

  • How do i change transition length in fcpX ?

Hi Im trying to increase the lenght of transitions using FCP X version and having no sucess. thanks.

Yes, transition durations can be changed.  I use them all the time.  Specifically I use the Cross Dissolve transition from the transition menu under the Dissolve section. I cannot imagine why they are not working for you. I was assuming that you actually see the transition on your timeline but you cannot adjust it.  If you cannot see or apply the transition to your clips there is the possibility that your clips are not a storyline.  In FCP X, transitions can only be applied to clips that are on a "storyline".  This is the track that received your first video clip you brought into the timeline.  You can also select other clips on other "tracks" above or below the primary storyline and make those clips into a storyline using the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection.  After that action, they also can receive transitions. If the clips are not on a storyline, you would not be able to even drag them from the effects browser to a clip and see them on that clip.  Anyway, just thinking out loud.  Best wishes.

  • Transition Length

    Hi!
When I add any transition between 2 clips, it's really short! (<1 sec) How can I make it longer?

  • How to Set Default Transition in FCPX?

FCP Studio allowed you to "Make a Favorite" and set it as the default.  FCPX has a "Favorite" item in a drop-down menu, but it doesn't seem to set a chosen transition as a default.  How to you set a default in FCPX?

    Hi,
this is directly from the help menu:
    Set transition defaults
Choose Final Cut Pro > Preferences, or press Command-Comma (,), and click Editing.
    Set the transition default settings.
Default length: This sets the length, in seconds, of all transitions you add to the Timeline. You can adjust the transition length after it is in the Timeline.Note:  Some transitions have a set duration and do not follow this setting.
Apply transitions using: This defines where the transition’s video content comes from. For information about the “Apply transitions using” setting, seeTransition overlap options.

  • Transitions are not working

When I add transitions between clips (even if I select both clips and add), there is nearly no affect. In some cases, just to test, I have set the transition length to be one minute and the resulting clips when I play it don't transition. Rather they cut from one to the next. The transition are in the timeline.
    Btw, I'm using v5.

Okay... so I tried that and I did notice iM start to do something in the background. I saw the transition in the timeline (I had seen the before). I tried a 20 second transition (admittedly too long - but anything less -- event 10 seconds -- is not noticeable). I then ran the two clips with the transition in between. The transition, which was set for 20 seconds, was noticeable for about 1-2 seconds.
Now what's strange is, when I look below the video to see the timeline running, I can see the the transition icon running. However, in the video, there is nothing other than the 1-2 second transition.
So I could change this to a 5 minute transition, and there would be no difference.

  • Transition question

Hi. I'm a newbee and hope someone can answer my question in five seconds. I import a movie clip, slice it in two in Timeline window, click on the middle, then
I can get default transition by pressing command and "T". But if I import two movie clips, place them in Timeline, clink on the middle, press command and "T", what I get is paper-thin transition with duration of 0.01 second. Is this a bug on my computer or me?

Let me cut and paste...it is darn easy and the reason I have these Stock Answers:
    #1 Transitions "Insufficient Content"
    Shane's Stock Answer #1:
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.
a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

  • I can't get my transitions to work.

Whenever I insert a transition, it automatically shows up as 0.1 seconds.
When I go into the inspector to change the transition length, it changes in the inspector, but when I play the movie, it's still 0.1 seconds.
Does anyone have any suggestions? (Also, it doesn't matter which transition it is - no matter which one, the same problem happens. Not sure if that would have any effect anyway, but I thought I should through that out there.)

Well, that explains it. The shortest adjacent clip was 0.1 seconds, since I was trying to insert it into a stop motion animation video. Thanks!
*Makes slide long enough to extend the transition to 0.5 seconds* That worked!
Except... Now the shortest adjacent clip is 0.5 seconds, and the transition itself is 0.4.

  • Can't insert transitions properly

I was working on a project, had inserted a few fade transtitions and then something really weird started to happen: instead of the transitions being the standard 1 second (1;00) in length, they are now only 1 frame (;01) in length.
Even if I ctrl-click on the transtion and try to change the length of the transition, I just get an error beep when I try to change the length of the transition to anything but ;01. In addition, I'll sometimes get the "insufficient content for edit message", even though there is more than enough header material in both clips where I'm trying to attempt to put the transition. I've tried several different video transitions and keep getting the same errors. I've gone so far as creating a brand new project and importing my clips in as well as deleting all the user preferences for FCP, but I'm still getting the same error. I'm using a brand new install of FCP 6 with all current updates installed.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The clips I'm working on are all at least 3 minutes in length, so there is more than enough material to insert standard transitions. < </div>
    Not the issue.
I'd rather get this working properly again rather than dealing with seperate tracks, opacity, etc. < </div>
Without looking over your shoulder, all I know about this is what you have posted and, from what information you have provided, you do not understand how FCP's transition paradigm works. I'll agree it's a silly metaphor. You can fight it all you want but we're stuck with it. Using separate tracks is a proven method to get people comfortable with the concept.
I've already dumped the user prefs several times to no avail. < </div>
You're assuming the prefs control the default transition length. But that's not your problem so you can safely stop trashing prfes.

  • Transition Speed in german version

    Hi there,
in the german version of the lates Adobe Muse CC Version i found the following bug:
If i take a composition and place it on the stage it works fine. But if i make any changes at the transition speed - it doesn´t work. It seems like i put my transition speed to 0 sec.
I found out, that all preferences with a comma doesn´t work. If i type in the transition speed to 1 sec it works fine. 0,3 - 0,4 - 0,5 and so on... Muse don´t accept my preferences. Could it be, that this doesn´t work because of the comma instead a dot?
    Please let me know.
    Best regards

the transition length depends on the length of handles avail in both clips 'left/right' of transitions.
    no restrictions in the trial.

  • Transition Problems with Final Cut Pro

This is a crazy problem that's randomly popped and I hope someone can help.
While editing a movie in FCP, I suddenly started having problems with adding transitions between clips. I usually right-click "add transition" and the default used to be a second-long transition (I'd adjust the length according to my needs). Now the default length is just one frame (barely noticeable!) and FCP won't let me edit the transition length! I've tried everything from dragging and dropping from the "Effects" tab, to doing it from the drop down menu and nothing works. I can add the transition to a clip if there is no clip following it but then I can't add a clip for it to transition to! (Ex: I have Clip A and add "cross dissolve" and I can manipulate everything including the dissolve length. But when I want to dissolve from Clip A to Clip B, it won't let me do anything and just leaves me with a 1-frame-long dissolve. This happens with all transitions)
I have enough frames on both sides to do the transition. This never used to be a problem and now it is.
    Help!

*I have more than enough handles. Each clip is over 10 seconds long and I'm just trying to do a 15 frame (about half second) transition.*
The length of your clips has nothing to do with having enough in the way of handles.
You cannot butt the absolute end of a clip to the absolute beginning of a clip and expect to add a transition. When this is the case, you are telling FCP that you want the transition to start on your last frame of video and end on the first incoming frame.... so it has no frames to use for the transition.
So, you have to trim the clips as I suggested so that FCP has something to work with.

  • How do I start transitions after the clip has fully finished.

At the moment the transition is taking about two seconds off of my clip. This looks so bad and very unprofessional as the audio just ends suddenly. I have tried playing around with precision editor but I cannot get the clip to fully finish. I have tried changing the transition length but it just makes it go very fast or just takes even more off of the clip before. URGENTT!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

You can't because any transition by definition has to overlap parts of the two clips either side of it.
If this causes the audio of the first clip to end prematureley a solution is to detach the audio from the first clip.  The audio track will then be editable separately and can continue through the overlap part of the video.
    Geoff.
