Transition Preferences in FCPX

Since upgrading to FCPX 10.0.4 I seem to have lost some control over my Transition Preference options - see attached screen grabs. I used to be able to set it to use AVAILABLE MEDIA, but not any more ... what has happened?

This option has disappeared, and with good reason, in a previous update (I am not sure if it was .3 or .2).
mishmumken has put it correctly: available media (what is called "handles") is used. This has nothing to do with the length of the clips; the handles are the *extra* parts of the clips that are not being used in the timeline; these are the parts that can be used for a transition. If you have a 20 minute clip in your event browser, select it in its *entirety* and drag it to the timeline, there is no extra footage (i.e. no handle) to use for the transition. However, if you select part of a clip, the adjacent footage (that you are not selecting) will be used for the transition - see the picture below.
Only if there is not enough media in the handles do you get the following dialog:
One great way to see what footage you have available for the transition is to use the "precision editor". You can activate it by just double-clicking on the edit point in the timeline.

Transitions Preference Setting Missing

I am using Lion on a MacPro tower and just purchased Final Cut Pro X after first using the Trial version. I went to set my "Transitions" preferences and noticed that I am missing a choice for the transitions setting:
It is my understanding from FCP X training videos that I should have a choice in "Transitions" "Apply transitions using" as illustrated by this image:
How do I go about getting this choice in Preferences?

Missing Transitions Preferences tab

Just editing, went to insert a transition and fcpx would not allow it. I went to preferences to change the "Apply Transition using available media" but the tab/choice to do this is not there anymore. I did just update to 10.3 earlier. Thanks for your help. Here is what it looks like now:

Yes, it's gone. Available media is the only option. If there isn't available media you'll get a warning and the option to shorten your project. Should have been like this from the beginning.

How do I set the hard drive preference in FCPX?

I have a MacPro and want to set a drive other than my home drive (which is the smallest of the four drives) as the default drive for FCPX. The Preferences panel doesn't seem to have this as an option.
When I try to import to iMovie Project it only goes to my home drive (this project is 1 GB and then proceeds to render for a half hour). When I copy the iMovie asset to the other hard and delete the version on the home drive, it doesn't run (missing item/s). FCPX also won't let me drag the iMovie Project to this hard drive.
It would be so much easier if I could just designate the correct drive for FCPX in the first place. Looking forward to the solution!

I want to thank y’all for your kind suggestions.
The plot thickens. I tried to re-import the iMovie project to the Home drive and then copy or move it to the drive (C drive) where I would like to keep the FCPX assets and projects. Once the iMovie Project was imported, the Drop Down would only let me copy or move Events – not Projects. In reviewing the imported iMovie Project, I found some corruption with the FCPX Project version (e.g., the chapter titles are missing information that’s in the iMovie version; specifically, Sports Theme school logo).
FCPX now appeared to be corrupted.
I tried starting over by deleting everything from within FCPX on both the Home drive and the C drive. Interestingly, FCPX wouldn’t let me delete one Event on the C Drive (FCPX message indicated there had to be at least one item).
I imported the iMovie Project again. This time, the Project was imported directly to C?! The FCPX Project is still corrupted (e.g., the chapter titles are missing the same information as previously. I stopped inspecting at this point). Also miscellaneous Projects that I had just deleted reappeared. One of these was an iMovie Project that was somehow mislabeled (I think by FCPX). Also, miscellaneous related Events re-appeared in the Home Drive.
Previously when I had a corrupted application, I deleted two small files (plist and another similar small file, I actually just dragged them to my Desktop) and re-installed the app from the DVD. However, I can’t recall how to do this exactly. Is there a good link that explains which files to delete in FCPX? Also, how do you re-install an App without the DVD?
I just bought FCPX from the App Store Monday evening and haven’t been able to have any fun with it.

Creating a Transition Template for FCPX

So I am familiar with FCPX and editing, however I am still working on developing my skills in animated graphics. I found a great transition I want to brand my videos with but it is saved as a After Effects Project. Upon opening it AE just has transparency behind it and no placeholder media for what would be transitioning. This would work find if I was making my project in AE, but I want to save this transition as a Transition that pops up in my FCPX Transitions Panel. I know you can create custom transitions in Motion, but I was wondering if anyone has had experience in making transitions, and if it would be possible to get an AE transition to be used as a Motion transition. Man I hope that makes sense lol.

Yeah -
Create your logo graphics in AE (you'll need to -- can't do that kind of 3D effects in Motion). Remove anything that pertains to a background and Export the project as ProRes 4444 (you'll need the transparency — everything that is background should be transparent.)
In Motion, move the playhead to the point at which you want the storyline to transition from the incoming clip to the outgoing clip. Select Transition A layer and type 0 to mark an out point. Select Transition B layer and type 'i' to mark an in point.
Save the transition. Supply a Category name (say: My Logo) and a project name (you don't need to deal with Themes and you don't need to provide a Preview).

Is there anything similar to a "blur-cross" transition plugin for FCPX? I used this plugin all the time in FCP 6.

Yes, transition durations can be changed. I use them all the time. Specifically I use the Cross Dissolve transition from the transition menu under the Dissolve section. I cannot imagine why they are not working for you. I was assuming that you actually see the transition on your timeline but you cannot adjust it. If you cannot see or apply the transition to your clips there is the possibility that your clips are not a storyline. In FCP X, transitions can only be applied to clips that are on a "storyline". This is the track that received your first video clip you brought into the timeline. You can also select other clips on other "tracks" above or below the primary storyline and make those clips into a storyline using the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection. After that action, they also can receive transitions. If the clips are not on a storyline, you would not be able to even drag them from the effects browser to a clip and see them on that clip. Anyway, just thinking out loud. Best wishes.

Motion 5 - Transitions with breaks in the video content? How?

I hope someone can help with this. I am trying to create a transition between two clips which while transitioning will show a text frame ot introduce the next video. I want it to break the flow between the videos. When I create the transition in Motion 5 I have assembled all the elements, made transition A last for 2 seconds, there is a 6 second gap then as the camera pans to the text element and then across to Transition B which itself then runs for 2 seconds.
This is how i designed it, it works fine in Motion and looks how I want it. However when I export to Final Cut and use in a project it creates the transition but it ignores the break i put between content A and content B. Instead I get 5 second tail out of Clip A and 5 seconds lead in on Clip B. Its driving me mad as I want both feeds to go quiet and do nothing while the text displays.
Does anyone know how I can get FCP to recognise the break I have put in Motion and therefore only tail each clip for 2 seconds not the entire duration of the transition?
If this cant bedone, how could I best acheive what im trying to do?

Try this first:
Select the Project "layer" and in the Inspector > Properties select Override FCP. This will "force" fcpx to use the timing you designated for your project as the length to use for the transition. Otherwise, FCPX uses the length you have set in fcpx preferences.

Every time FCPX starts I have to render my project

I experience a really awful problem...
Every time I start my project I have to re-render the whole timeline.
I'm using the latest version of everything, also from the CoreMelt plug-in I'm using in this project.
As long as the project is short this doesn't happen, but after 2 minutes project lenght this happens all the time.
I have 64 GB RAM so this should not be the problem.
The plugin developer stated that this is a FCPX background rendering problem, but when I switch it off it's not getting better.
Then I have to render it manually, before I can edit/watch the project.
I have one of the fastest MaPro's available 12 core and I work on a SSD-RAID0 with highest Data-Rates...
So what is the problem and how to solve this??

does this happen if you delete the coremelt fx from the clips ?
I have never had this problem. But I did demo the coremelt plugs and they gave me nothing but H++++
Not saying they are the culprit... But if FCPx was at fault I think we'd be hearing more of it...
Try creating a fresh project with no core melt of other effects in it but with the same clips.. Then render the timeline. Quit FCPx and relaunch and see if the problem persists...
If it does
Try deleting
/Users/YourFolder/Library/Caches/ EVERYTHING FCPx
/Users/YourFolder/Library/Preferences/ EVERYTHING FCPx
Reboot with shift held.. Then log it.. Then reboot normally

Where are all the preferences settings?

Is anyone else startled by the complete lack of preferences in FCPX? Example: I can't set any file storage directories for scratch files, edit files, etc. Has anyone found a way to do this? I feel like I have suddenly lost control of my editor.

Get use to it. FCP X was designed for:
A: those that don't know what they're doing.
B: those that don't pay attention to what they're doing.
C: the clueless.
It was not designed for those that have a good organizational sense. Like most Microsoft products, FCP X actually makes it more difficult to do what you want to do since it assumes no one does.

Trouble assigning images to FCPX Scrapbook Theme

I'm trying to use the 'Pan far right' transition / theme in FCPX.
It is automatically picking up images either side of the position I've inserted it into in the timeline, but I'm not able to change or add additional images to it.
Searching under FCPX help brings up the relevent topic 'Adjust Transitions with multiple images' which suggests that I should be able to identify the images which have been used in the theme via numbered 'handles' in the timeline, and that by dragging these handles I can change / assign images from the timeline to the corresponding numbers in the theme.
My problem is that I can't see the numbered handles in my timeline (see screenshot attached)
Any help much appreciated.

thanks for the reply - I quickly checked and the transition with the scrubber through it is in fact selected - just when I toggled to the screen capture tool the yellow marquee indicating selection faded out.
I've been able to view the missing handles by creating a new project (screen shot attached below) but I just can't figure out why the handles are not viewable in the original project.

Hi, Can FCPX use shared disks or Dropbox folder for import?

Those transitions should exist inside a folder with the full Transition name. Inside the folder should exist another file with the Transition Name.motr (the file type .motr) plus a large.png and small.png and a Media folder. That is a complete transition "package" for FCPX.
That complete folder needs to be placed in:
your internal hard drive (root drive) / Users / YourUserFolder / Movies / Motion Templates / Transitions
Inside the Transitions folder will be other folders (unless you've never added any other transitions before, or added the supplemental content) -- they are all given "Category" names (e.g.: Stylized). You should either create a New Folder and give it a unique name (Friend's Transitions) or pick one of the existing folders and place the entire Transition folder inside (for each transition you have.)
Back in FCPX, your new transitions should be available in the Effects/Transitions browser under the Category you placed them.

FCPX eats up my diskspace. Can anyone tell me my ideal workflow?

My specs: - macbook pro, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 int memory
- FCP X
- Canon Legria HFS100, settings: 24Mbps, 50i (or better PF25??), 1080i
I'm new here. So please forgive my ignorance on some things. Can anyone set me on the right path to make my import/outputsettings and workflow in FCP X ideal for my use? I'm making movies of my twin kids and my work as a firefighter mainly. So not professional, but enthousiastic amateur.
=> I should import files from my memory-card into FCPX? And not work with a usb cable? And in the preferences in FCPX, should I mark 'create Proxy media' or 'create optimised media'?
=> I've chosen to import my Imoviefiles to FCPX on my harddrive. Result: Full ! No more HDDspace to work with. So I would like to work with an external HDD. Which specs should that one have? And how do I export or copy my excisting files to that drive to free up disk space and NOT create bugs in the system?
=> How to clean up or find those large files you do not longer need after completing a project?
=> And finally: To store my movies. Should I 'export movie' and which settings do I take best?

Well, I guess that explains why I booted up after a weekend away and got a "full disk" message I ended up having to do a disk repair for the first time in 4 years (on this comp). Still not sure why I only had <2g space. Last I had looked, thot it was over 40 (but still getting crowded).
Peter: Its hard to say what works as far as an external disk size. Like what to do upon export, it all depends on your needs. Since we seem to be in the same neighborhood of what we do, I'll tell you my setup (which seemed overkill 4 years ago) and you can figure at least not to do less.
I've gotten along using my 250g system drive working on one project at a time. My input has always been DV -- either from DV tape or AV/DV Converter via the same camera. My projects have mostly been targeted to 1.5 to 2 hr DVDs.
I have had an external 320g drive for photos, an "abeyance" folder of bits and pieces video files for future projects, and img files of the most recent DVDs.
Processing one project at a time, I have never run out of space on my 250g drive, until I ran into FCPX's duplication of files when "copy" is checked when importing existing files, creation of analyzation and optimization files and, the humungous render files.
When I moved all FCPX Event and Project files to my "Photo" drive (and deleting duplicated iMovie and FCE files), I ended up with 125g on my system drive, and still have 100g on my "Photo" drive.
Since the majority of my files all start out as SD .dv files (or HD mp4 files), I don't have the needs you will using AVCHD files, so I would say that while 500g should suit your needs, the price difference of a 1TB may make it a no-brainer.
And FW 800, definitely, but I think you already knew that. RPM? Since I haven't bought one in 4 years, I dunno what's on the market any more.

Latest update of pref. manager not trashing preferences?

Hello to all. I have observed twice in the recent past that when I trash my preferences after an editing sesion, that there are no files in the trash bin for emptying. This development has taken place only after my updating to the latest version [? 4...]. When I am opening preference manager I find that it still has version 3.2.1 only. When I tried to update to the latest version again I was informed that it was up to date. May I be informed of what the trouble is and how to get the preferences trashed?

I had opted to upgrade to version 4 when that option popped up while I was yet using a fully functional preference manager!
The earlier version was right there in its own place in the applications slot for it and I had not even meddled with it, no, not even in my dreams.
Upgrade done, when I had trashed preferences with FCPX checked, no files turned up at that time. I did not pay any attention to that presuming that there were no preferences to get the trashing. It was only when there were no trashing taking place on two later occasions that I woke up to the fact that preferences were not getting trashed.

FCPX causes system beep during program startup

Just today FCPX seems to be causing a beep in my computer when I startup the program.. I also just had one when I shut dowb the program.
It seems to beep when Compressor Settings are laoding in FCPX.
I trashed all of my preferences for FCPX, Compressor, and Motion.
I also thought hat it might be a problem with my FXFactory Plug. I realized that there was an update the otehr day, whcih I assume was for the FCPX update.
I downloaded that and still got the beep.
I also downloaded my Coremelt V2 plugins again as well.
Any ideas?
