Transition Rendering

When I add a transition (simple cross dissolve) I'm forced to re-render both of the entire clips...not just at the transition points; they are long takes with a few filters so it takes forever.I tried to do a work-around of cutting the clips so that I would only render a small portion, but that too makes the entire clip need to be re-rendered. I've just migrated from FCP 7 so I'm still not 100 percent on how things work...am I missing something? Thanks in advance to all...
Al

Well thanks for trying Tom... not sure what's up. The footage was shot on xdcam ex and the only changes made in the timeline are the chroma key (it does have a background layer beneath it) and the color correction. Just strange that it alters the entire clip...
Thanks again for giving it a look,
Al

  • How to continue transition rendering with custom dialog open

    Hi,
I'm working on a plugin for some custom transitions (currently for CS6/CC on Windows).
I'm using a custom dialog (hasCustomDialog in PiPL) during esSetup to set the transition parameters. While the dialog is open the execution of Premiere is halted until the dialog gets closed.
The problem is, while I'm fiddling with the parameters I can't see changes in the program monitor and I don't get any feedback from Premiere.
I tried to make the dialog non-blocking but then Premiere didn't rerender the frames when I changed something in the dialog.
Does anybody know if it is possible to keep the dialog open and still have Premiere actively updating the rendered view?
    Regards,
    Philipp Stelzer

    Hi Zac,
    thanks for your answer.
Currently I'm using a modal dialog to set up my parameters and the parameters are corretly applied after I close the dialog.
But I'd like to keep the dialog open to see the changes directly without reopening the dialog each time I want to tweak a value. Is that possible with a custom dialog?
I'll take a look at the new transition extensions, but I'm already working on this plugin for a few month and my dialog and the transition effects are already quite extensive. So, I don't know if it is possible to port everything to the new extensions (at least not in reasonable time).
    Regards,
    Philipp

  • Transitions and titles going black when rendered

For the last few months, I have been making some movies in iMovie HD, ranging from 2 min. to a bit over 20 min. long. Most of the content is iMovie08 slide shows imported to iMovie and interspersed with brief video clips taken with still cameras. Have done about two dozen at this point, with only one minor problem prior to the current one. (In that case, when I added subtitles they began to include several extra "trailer" sections, which wasn't a particular problem unless I had another subtitle following closely. Somehow, that resolved itself.)
The current movie was coming along fine. I had successfully added a couple of cross dissolves in the beginning between sections of slide shows and movie clips, then went on to complete the rest of the movie (20 min.) before going back to add the rest of the transitions and some titles. When I tried to put in cross dissolves or overlaps, the preview was correct but when the transition rendered, it became a fade to black followed by a cut. (Have subsequently checked several of the other transitions which I would not likely ever use and they all transition to black as well.) When I tried to put in titles, they also previewed correctly, but rendered over black instead of over the image. Tried all the easy stuff like closing and reopening iMovie, rebooting, making a new copy of the project, clicking the "over black" box off and on a few times. No luck. The only think I did any different in this project from all the others is turn or edit contrast/saturation in two clips in iMovie08 before exporting them back to iMovie HD.
I created a new user account and made a test movie and did not have the problem. Logging back in I deleted the cache and the plist files for imovie. After rebooting i can create a new project and the subtitle and transitions do not go black. The original project still has the problem. I even opened the project package and deleted the cache inside the project.
Has anyone figured out any way to salvage a project that is holding on to damaged preferences?

Did you try logging in on a new account and opening the problem iMovie file in the new account? I wasn't certain from your post whether you did that. Can other trouble free movies be created/played in the old account now that you deleted preferences?
Also, did you do a permissions repair in additiion to deleting the .plist file? You didn't mention that in your list. You should do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac.
Have you added any 3rd party or Quicktime plug-ins lately? These sometimes can cause conflicts. If you have any, you could try moving them to a different folder to temporarily disable them, and see if that solves it.
Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space for iMovie to operate efficiently. 20GB to 25GB is oft recommended on this forum.
Make sure that your Quicktime is updated to current version.
Any new software installed lately that could be causing a conflict?
If the problems are occurring solely in the currrent project, and the diagnostic efforts that you have made don't solve it, then you probably should start over. This is a relatively short movie, so the effort is fairly minimal. Can save a lot of time in the long run. You might be able to clear out all of your titles and transitions and transfer your clips into a new iMovie project with all of the editing still intact. Always make a backup copy of your movie, first.

  • Transitions in imovie 6.0.3 using imac 10.4.8

I am creating short imovies with combinations of scanned photos, images from my digital camera and images from a digital video camera. With about 30 or 40 items in the time line I wish to place transitions between them. When I do this however I have success with about 50 % of the transitions.
Flaws manifest themselves in various forms depending on the type of transition and whether I attempt to place 1 or more transitions simultaneously. If I attempt to place just one overlap transition between two items, imovie simply and consistantly quits. If I attempt to place several overlap transitions simultaneously I get black transitions (rendering occurs suspiciously quick i.e. there is no rendering). With any other transition whether single or multiple the transition works great up until the last 100th of the transition where it is black. In playback this appears as an annoying flash.
Again these flaws occur with just a select number of images in the time line but they happen consistantly and predictably (these flaws do not seem random)
    Any suggestions?

    Hello,
Welcome to the discussions. There have been some transition problems reported, although maybe not so many problems as you are experiencing.
I had the black/flash with the transition cross-dissolve in one of my movies recently. I found the suggestions in this thread to resolve that: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3842119#3842119

  • Reducing Time of Rendering when Exporting to Encore

Does anyone know how to reduce the rendering time when exporting from Premiere Pro CS3 to Encore? I'm trying to create a DVD of a 90 minute event using VBR 1 Pass and is taking 22 hours to get the job done! I have a 5 GB Mac Pro with 2 X 3 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon Processors running on OS 10.4.11. Will "Forcing CBR" help? Will it compromise image quality? Any thoughts?

With your machine the encoding to MPEG should be better then real time: a 90 minutes timeline should take about 90 minutes or less. However the effects and transitions rendering can greatly add to this time. Some effects can take "forever" to render. If you provide the effects you are using, we may be able to tell you which ones are time consuming to render.

  • Transition Woes!

Has anyone figured out this transition problem - I cannot add a transition anymore to my timeline. I get an "Unexpected Error" message or it applies but does not render - just sits there....?
I've tried all the usual fixes, pref. file, new user, etc, etc.
    Appreciate your thoughts!

in I movie under View I deselected "show volume clip levels" and the transitions rendered.
I also went to applications-system-disk utilities-
Then highlighted the disk I stroed my movie on and selected verify disk. When it said there was a problem, I clicked repair disk....then returned to my porject, turned off the "show volume clips levels" and the transitions rendered.
May this will work for you.

  • Lost transitions after time stretch video texts

How do I get back to the original project I opened to work on?  I realized the text duration was 5 sec and needed to be 6 sec.  I used the Time Stretch on the text title to increase about 30 text titles by 1 sec ea.  I rendered and saved in batches of 10.  Results were that the transitions between scenes "went away."  I then replaced these transitions, rendered and results were Text titles were moved.  This is a mess and I want to start from where I left off  Please help.  Thank You :-)

You can try to open one of the auto-saves, in the sub-folder in the same folder as your project file.
But meantime, don't time-stretch a title to extend it. Just stretch it longer on your timeline.

  • IDVD is rendering ridiculously slowly

Call me crazy, but I didn't expect my movies that had already been prepared for sharing in iMovie to take 24+ hours to burn to DVD.
    I have a MBP 2.4 GHz 2GB RAM with 10.5.4 and iLife 08.
I have several iMovie projects (about 20 min each) that I am burning to this DVD+R DL, plus a large MP4 video. I wanted them to all play continuously without having to select them in succession on the menu, so I put the iMovie projects and the movie file in a slideshow, as suggested on another forum. It's about 180 minutes of video total. I'm trying to burn the dual layer DVD at "High Quality". It's about 1/3 done "Processing Slides and Transitions"/"Rendering Slides" now and claims it's going to take another 17 hours. It's currently on the large MP4 part, and it seems to have slowed down even more here in terms of expected completion time. iDVD is topping out at about 150% processor usage, and there is extra room to spare there. No other app is doing much.
    Any thoughts? Thanks

Call me crazy, but I didn't expect my movies that had already been prepared for sharing in iMovie to take 24+ hours to burn to DVD.
    OK, you're Crazy
Making BIG DVDs requires lots of patience. I'm not sure 'movies that had already been prepared for sharing in iMovie' gets you much.
I suspect there is a lot of transcoding going on (especially with the mpg4 file). MPG-2 needs to look at adjacent frames to do it's compressing. MPG-4 doesn't have 'adjacent frames' until it's rendered so I expect deep within iDVD's workings your mpg4 file must first be reencoded with the DV or Apple Intermediate CODEC.
Walk away from your machine and let it 'do its thing' - over night - or perhaps longer.

  • Stutter at transition

Image "jumps" or stutter at transition (dissolve). Happens especially between still images, with or without keyframes. I believe it began with latest upgrade either to FCP HD and/or Tiger.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Steve -

    Are the transitions rendered?
Also, many times if a keyframe is added to the last frame of the clip THEN the transition is added, there willappear to be a glitch on playback. The keyframe should be moved later on in the clip into the "handle" and it should be okay.

  • How do you FORCE FCPx to re-render a clip?

    here's the problem.
Final Cut Pro X FREQUENTLY screws up transition renders. Did I say FREQUENTLY? It CANNOT be stressed enough, that FCPx DOES SOMETHING BAD to its transition renders Quite Often.
ok, until Apple fixes that nightmare, I want a workaround. I thought I had it:
if you hit control+r you tell FCPx to 'render selection.'  its right there in the menu.
but its a lie. what it SHOULD read in the menu is: 'render selection, if it is not already marked as having been rendered.'  This is a problem for me, because FCPx FREQUENTLY SCREWS UP TRANSITION RENDERS*.
*ok, I think I've said it enough, time for an example:
imagine a crossfade, standard, stock crossfade, using the standard timing... EVERYTHING is standard. Well, How would you feel if you were scrubbing an otherwise perfect edit... to find that your crossfades... ALL OF THEM... pop the resulting image, into the first frame of the transition? I bet you'd be mad.
How would you feel if you HAD NO RELIABLE WAY TO FORCE FCPx TO RE-RENDER THOSE TRANSITIONS?  You'd be livid. Lets put some more firewood on here... How would you feel if this happened randomly, all the time?  I really do mean ALL THE TIME. I can scarcely look at FCPx without it screwing up the transitions of my edit.
point is. FCPx has a wonderful editor. its a joy to use. But its chock FULL of bugs, and its so SMUG that it doesn't provide ANY workarounds. The Documentation is a joke. So I'm here... trying to find a way To FORCE FCPx to re-render something IT thinks is already rendered. the smug jerk.

    OP here.
I'd like to make a few comments.
Apple has been slowly fixing critical bugs in FCPx, I'm happy with the direction things are headed. But we still have a long way to go.
the "delete Project Render Files" option is a late edition, and I "think" it is meant to address this specific issue. I find however that in practice, it introduces as many problems as it solves. deleting the project render files forces a re-render on the entire timeline, and as stated way back in the OP, FCPX screws up transition renders.
Let me dig into that a little bit. Randomly, FCPx will cut out the first frame of a transiton, creating a jarring full frame jump (as it skips to the second frame) just at the front of a transition, and fill the last frame with black. All I want to do at this maddening point is force FCPX to re-render specific parts of the show, one at a time, because if I ask it to render the other stuff, invariably I will be subjected to the same amount of render bugs I am trying to eliminate. (or more) FCPX does this randomly, so if I can force it to re-render only a specific segment, there's a chance it won't render that bit incorrectly. And with finite control, I can step through and fix each transition, forcing as many re-renders as necessary, always getting closer to done, rather than starting from scratch at every step.
so, the tip is appreciated, it just doesn't answer my needs. I like FCPX, and sometimes its a dream but it is still riddled with critical bugs and the lack of percision control over the system is a design flaw, IMHO.

  • How to render or output a multicamera project

I am thankful for the previous help and now I have the multicamera project almost done.  I used multicamera window and went through 1 hour of film shot from two cameras.  It went into sequence 002 and then I put video transitions between each clip. It plays fine in the project window.  I don't know what to do next.  I tried export - media and that brought up a window with a preview and output preview and choices of dvd. I left it on ntsc dvd and click export it put a 1 meg file on the computer, project file or something.  It takes about a second to do that. I tried rendering workspace and rendering time line and that takes way longer but results in 130 separate files on the hard drive.  I don't know what to do with them.  One time early when I was playing with this with a single video file I had adobe encoder come up, but I can't find that anywhere now.  I don't understand how to get this video with the transitions rendered out to an avi file.  Thanks for helping,  I have a book coming from Amazon on how to use this, not here yet.  I find the adobe pdf help file, not so helpful.  Doug

What version are you using Doug?
If CS4, you file>export>media and it opens up the dialog you mention.  Then choose the one you want.  This will in turn launch the Adobe Media Encoder which will actually do the rendering.  Note where the output directory is.  From there, you should be good to go.

  • Idvd burning - I'm getting error code -536870198 - HELP!

I can't burn any movies to DVD through iDVD 5.0.1
I get most of the way through the process - title rendering, transition rendering, video processing (or rendering, can't recall) then the machine spits out the blank DVD (A Memorex DVD+R), says there were errors in the process and gives me error code
    -536870198
    then iDVD usually is unresponsive/crashes
Anyone have any idea what this or how I can fix it?
    It's driving me nuts.

I would use (and do) Verbatim DVD-R (not DVD+R) burned at 4X or slower. Here's some more detail about using a disk image. Some of these errors tend to pop up from trying to burn a disk too fast.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Freeze during render

    Hi
Have the same problem using iDVD as well as FCE 3.5.1, so I'm hoping someone can help in this forum too.
Whilst trying to render video in iDVD, it gets past the menu and transition stage, soon after it starts rendering video the whole computer freezes, so just the application not responding, but the whole computer needs to be rebooted to get it to work again.
What I have worked out, is that it could be hardware related, one of my back up drives has a totally clean install of 10.4.10, so booted up from that and installed iLife 08, ran iMovie, then iDVD, the same process I used from the main HD, menus and transitions rendered, not long after the mov file started rendering the whole computer froze, exactly the same as it was doing in FCE whilst rendering.
Is this likely to be hardware rather than software? Couldn't reinstall iDVD 06 and get that working, so not sure what 08 installs to prevent me from opening it up.
Never used to have these problems before I upgraded my processor or graphics card, is either of these likely to be a cause?
    Gavin

You're in a weird situation as far as iLife '08 in that the latest version of iMovie is not supported on a G4 but iDVD07 apparently is. Although I have yet to see anyone post here who has successfully installed iLife'08 onto a G4. Might not work properly on a G4 at all.
Tell us exactly what you upgraded and/or installed onto your G4.
I also own a G4. However I won't even attempt to load iLife '08 on a working G4 PowerMac ....except thru the the following approach ..... simply to test it beforehand:

  • 35mm feature / FCP workflow... Urgent

    Hey guys,
Sorry if there are threads about this topic already, I don't have too much time to research the entire topic list. Here is my question:
What are the Tried and True Film workflows. I have included the current workflow and what the project is.
    Shot:35mm
Telecined: 29.97 DVcam as well as Dbeta protection copies.
Reverese Telecined: Cinema tools 29.97 to 23.98
    Cutting: DVntsc 23.98
(that is 23.98 not 24, incase you were going to ask)
    System: Quad G5, FCP 5.1, Kona 3
Everything is going fine except for the fact we can not get a frame accurate output back to DVcam or Betasp. Our sound house and Negative cutting house both need a frame accurate locked picture as chase tapes in 29.97.
I thought KONA removed the pulldown, I also thought that I could do this no problem. Finding out now that this is a headache. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?? I need to deliver sound dubs tomorrow.
Can I output my 23.98 project out as a self contained QT and render it in a 29.97 timeline for output?? Will that work??
    Thanks
    Todd

    Todd
might be a stretch but if you could get your hands on a HDcam or XDcam deck in vancouver you could print your 23.98 timeline upconverting through Kona. (I would think any convert to 29.97 is going to do pulldown on the final edit as a single piece). Could they not use a 23.98Psf as a chase?
I haven't done a filmout yet from any of our projects. there is on in the pipeline but it's originating in HD. the HD conforms I've done that originate on Sony get a dual window burn in with ORG (original)TC and PDT (pulldown)TC burned in the letterbox portion of the DV TC dub. if there are any problems conforming the edl from 29.97 to 23.98 there is a visual cue as to what TC was on the original tape. Also I've noticed when the audio is posted at 29.97 I need to clip a frame on the 23.98 conform depending on the frequency of cuts, due to transitions rendered with pulldown at 29.97 on the DV edit.
Were I to do a film originated piece with a neg cut I'd get the keycode and TC burned in on the 29.97 dub, load the flex files into cinema tools and conform the EDL to 24fps at the end. If I had to I could then do a handwritten cut list of the keycode if all else went goofy.

  • FCE Vs iMovie. Quality Difference?

    hello there.
i'm just wondering whether such emphasised phrases as "high quality effects/transitions/rendering/etc" in the FCE manual or general description mean that, for instance, iMovie's quality, as far as rendering, effects and transitions are concerned, is worse. am i correct in understanding so?..
the problem i am facing is that, although i'm in the middle of switching to FCE from iMovie for doing all/most of my video work, i still find that i've got much-much more effects and transitions in iMovie than in FCE, due to having 7 of the 10 Slick-GeeThree packages. so what i'm thinking is that i could share the work between the two applications, using the best features of each to the benefit of my projects.
however... the thought that suddenly occurred to me was - would the quality of my video footage suffer in iMovie? or has iMovie got the same quality parameters as FCE?

    thanks for your replies.
i don't think i'll be having any problems with audio, as most of my projects are music videos, which means i won't be using the sound of the original footage: the soundtrack is added separately.
as for the quality of some effects. yes, that's exactly what i meant. the captured video looks great in iMovie. but as soon as i add such effects as colour correction, for instance, or saturation, the sharpness of the picture disappears and it starts to look edgy. for example, if it's a human face, the original oval curve of a cheek or a chin will look slightly saw-edged, i.e. i can spot square pixels...
which is why i thought that perhaps the "high quality" bit in the FCE official description meant that i won't be encountering similar problems in FInal Cut?
