Transition to Lion

Hi folks.
I've been using Tiger Server for several years.  Not the happiest about the software, as it was expensive and Apple seemed to forget me with Leopard and Leopard Server.  Being a small company I can't throw money out for a new server as it gets more manageable.
First question:  My server sits close to me with a screensaver on.  When the screensaver returns to the desktop, does that mean someone is somehow manipulating my machine?  It's been doing that recently.  I've been getting some database errors on the machine as well.  I thought someone might know about that.
Second, I have heard that Lion will also have Lion Server implemented as well.  Can I replace Tiger Server with Lion Server with email/ftp/web?
Cheers

Nobody is near my server.  I am the only person in my office.  Nobody is reaching into it.  Just wondering if SSH would do that.
So I have to buy a $500 Leopard Server license, then a $500 Snow Leopard Server license to get to Lion Server?  The reason I never upgraded from Tiger was because of the outrageous fees for seat licenses.  So to go from Tiger Server to Lion Server will cost me $1,049 when Lion Server costs $49.  That is just very shortsighted.

  • ITunes auto sync no longer works under Lion

SInce I upgraded to Lion, iTunes no longer automatically starts and syncs when I connect my iPhone or iPad.
I checked the preferences:  both have the "start iTunes" automatically box checked.
This is also the newest edition of iTunes:  10.4

    The fix involves iTunes helper.
Go to login items and delete the one that's there.
Then drag a new version of iTunes helper from the iTunes package to login items.
I'm finding the transition to Lion more problematic than normal. Apple did not do a particularly good job of working the bugs out of this version of Mac os.

  • How to upgrade from Leopard Server 10.5.8 to Lion Server?

In anticipation of Lion, I finally retired my G5 2.7GHZ Mac Desktop running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 and moved the start up drive to an 2 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo MacMini.
    It is running fine.
I would like to now upgrade to Lion Server, but without spending $499 for Snow Leopard Server. I do have a Evaluation Copy of Snow Lleopard Server 10.6. Can I use this as an intermediary transition to Lion?
Any other suggestions short of spending the $499?

There is no way at this time to go from 10.5 to 10.7 with out extra steps.
If this is a Mac Mini and Not a Mac Mini Server you can get the 29.99 Snow Lep client disk and install client on the mac mini then install lion and server on it making it a server and then bring your data back
If this is a Mac Mini Server you can install it from a Snow Lepored Client Via target disk mode. then you can erase the drive and install fallowing this apple support document.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4766
Now Migration will only mode your data and not update the OS, so migrating is not the solution for you. if you where to buy a new machine with Lion installed then migrating your data would he a help, but to update the OS you need to have 10.6.7 or higher
or a secound machine and be able to do the install over Target Disk mode.

  • Mountain Lion all Screwy on used Mac

Got a used Mac last week and the previous owner had it wiped, but it looks like it was cleaned out too thoroughly.
Upon the first restart after taking possession of the computer, it booted to the Mountain Lion OS X Utilities screen. I'm not sure which version of Mountain Lion it is.
    I tried a few things:
-All the disks verified and were fine in Disk Utility.
    -Online recovery not possible
-Held Option while booting to select the Recovery partition, but it still booted to the Utilities screen
The online recovery was not possible because because the previous owner's AppleID had not purchased it previously, as the computer was pre-loaded with ML at the factory. I'm not sure what options I have left here. Any advice would be helpful.

That model was produced during Apple's transition to Lion, which means it may have shipped with Snow Leopard on optical media, or it may have shipped with Lion which required no optical media. If the seller has discs, he was obligated to include them with the sale (see Paragraphs 3 "Transfer"). Install Snow Leopard from those discs, then upgrade directly to Mavericks.
The seller was remiss in not erasing the disk completely and reinstalling its original OS. Only its original OS can be transferred, which was either Snow Leopard or Lion. He upgraded to Mountain Lion by purchasing it from the App Store. That license cannot legally be transferred to anyone (see Paragraph 3B), and as a practical matter cannot be transferred due to operational problems that will result from doing so: the "all screwy" result you experienced.
If that MBP was produced after (approximately) August 2011, booting OS X Internet Recovery will install Lion, and will not require an Apple ID. Install Lion and then upgrade directly to Mavericks.
Either way you will not have to pay for any OS X upgrades. Only Lion and Mountain Lion required payment, but there is no reason for you to install either one since Mavericks is better, and free.
In any event the Genius Bar will straighten things out for you.

  • I have an old mac book pro built in 2006. I just use it in the kitchen to go on the internet--which it does fairly well. It's running OS 10.6.8. Would it be risky to upgrade to the OS 10.7.4 Lion. Or should I leave well enough alone?

Would it be risky to upgrade to the OS 10.7.4 Lion. Or should I leave well enough alone? I was hoping that the upgrade would allow me to use an old version of Kindle for Mac. I need to get the machine into 2012 functionality. If I can't do it, no worries.

The very early 2006 MBPs are limited to Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  If your MBP is a model Identifier 2.1 or 2.2, then you can install Lion (10.7.5).  Note that the transition to Lion might mean that some applications will not be compatible so updates or substitutions would be needed.
I have a 2006 MBP, Model Identifier 1.2, and it is running Snow Leopard very efficiently.  It is just a bit slower than newer ones, especially in the graphics area.  Otherwise is is a very good machine.
    Ciao.

  • TS1906 Time Machine copies of Leopard to Lion (OS 10.7.4) - how to proceed?

after upgrading my MacBook from Leopard to Lion (OS 10.7.4) I now wonder what will happen when I reconnect my Time Machine's external disk to my laptop.
just before signing out of Leopard I had Time Machine do it's thing (that is just let it do a 'full run' - not making a full backup, I'm afraid...).
now I want to have my folders, files and other stuff back into my clean & empty Lion-ed MacBook, but I dare not just hooking up TM's extarnal disk with the laptop - not knowing what will happen then (I'm always very afraid, something desastrous might happen....)
can anyone tell me about your experiences in this situation / what to do / how to proceed?
    thanks in advance

  • I have lost my Silverfast scanning software since downloading Lion. Lion is proving a nightmare - particularly as I was originally told it would work with Silverfast. I also cannot use my Epson 2100 printer. Not a very pro ufgrade Apple. Anyone help?

Can not use Silverfast scanning technology or my Epson 2100 Colour Stylus printer since upgrading to Mac OS X Lion. I had been assured that Silverfast would work and had no idea the printer would become redundent! Not Good information from Apple!! Anyone out there help?

    Hi, Peter;
    The culprit is Silverfast.
The company went as far as telling owners and new customers back in March that their software would work with Lion ("buy Silverfast version 6.6 now, and get a free upgrade to Version 8 when it we release it in late August!").  Days after Lion came out, the German software maker issued a statement that their current version is NOT compatible with Lion (knocking all of their Mac customers out of the scanning business until the newer, functional Silverfast version is ready.)
On the company's owners-only discussion groups, Mac customers have expressed outrage that manufacturer Lasersoft was not clearer on this meltdown in the making.  Users have either had to re-install Snow Leopard, stop scanning for the next several weeks, or buy, install and learn different scanning software.
Lasersoft has even "re-written history"; pulling earlier press coverage (which claimed their software would work with Lion) and "clarifying" that the Version 8 software (which they say will work with Lion) will be available for purchase sometime next month.  The moderator has actually censored or deleted entries offering the name of rival VueSoft (which is Lion compatible), and has removed posts from dissatisfied customers.
Lasersoft discussion groups are amusingly Orwellian right now, with counter accusations hurled at customers who are just trying to get their software to work. Company spokesmen are issuing clumsily-worded taunts instead of apologies or simple damage control language.  UPDATE: the company has now removed some of their own more uncaring responses to users, but there is still some funny reading there.
The whole episode begs the question of what Lasersoft was doing between spring and fall of this year when they should have been preparing a more seamless transition to Lion.  New customers who purchased the pricey Silverfast software in March are doubly out of luck-- the “free upgrade”  to Lion-compatible version 8 only applies to purchases made after June first.

  • Upgrading to Lion on MacBook Pro: Can I turn of that new auto save feature?

I am going to be upgrading (or downgrading - yikes!) to Lion.
Is there any way to turn off that new feature that saves every single version of a document?
And, will Lion in anyway change my years worth of stored files totalling 60 GB? It is important for me to preserve them intact for various legal purposes, i.e. I cannot have a document created or modified on June 1, 2002 changed to today's date. Could that happen?
Much love to all those helping people make the transition to Lion (THAT INCLUDES YOU KAPPY)!
PS: I am currently running 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 5,1 -- Has anyone in the class of 5,1 upgraded to Lion yet? Thoughts?

Yeah but Eww this auto save thing is insane!
Why?  Are you under the mistaken impression that it stores multiple full copies of a document?  That is not the case.  Only the changes are stored to minimize the extra space used.
After all my years of seeing people wish for auto-save features, I never guessed that when they got it people would be wishing to NOT have it...
So is the amount of space that gets eaten up
What amount of space is that?  By what?
I think you're paying too much attention to people having problems.  That's basically ALL you get here.  This is where people come with problems.  So the information you're getting here has a serious selection bias...  you're not hearing what all the people who are NOT having problems have to say.
This is nothing like the tiger to Leopard change or the Leopard to snow leopard change
You're right, this is much more minor.  I'm actually surprised by how quickly things seem to be calming down here.  These forums were in a serious turmoil for months after SL's release!
AND this update is taking away our right to those minor customizations that make our Mac OUR Mac
How so?  Again, it sounds like you're listening to the wrong people or pulling "facts" out of thin air.  My MBP is just as customized in Lion as it was in SL, and is running quite smoothly.

  • How do I recover my Bookmarks from a Time Machine Back Up

I just upgraded from a 2 year old MacBook running Snow Leopard to a new MacBook Pro running Lion. Because of the problems Apple has between these 2 operating systems, I can not use the automated Migration Assistant to migrate over any of my old files, user info, or settings to the new machine. I'm having to manually pull over document files and applications from my Time Machine back up disk.
I can't seem to find my Bookmarks from the old computer in my back up files. On the Time Machine drive, I've looked in User, Application Support, Library, amongst many others. Not seeing it anywhere. They don't seem to be in Time Machine at all, or rather they're only there if I do the automated migration for all of my programs and settings. Which of course is not possible, because it leads to massive disk permission errors and a corrupted hard drive on the new machine. One thing I'm realizing i should have done was make a manual back up of my bookmarks in Firefox before I wiped my old machine. If I didn't do this, am I screwed?
If anyone has ideas I would love some help, I really really don't want to lose years of bookmarks.
Oh, and whatever you do, don't buy a Mac with OSX Lion unless you want to waste LOTS of time fixing Apple's mistakes. This whole process has been a disaster so far. There are all kinds of issues with the transition to Lion, I'm 40+ hrs in now. Apple now has their very own version of Vista.

The following has instructions: OS X Mavericks: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
The following is old but specific to iPhoto and may help: iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later)

  • Should I upgrade to Mac OS X v10.7 before I use Time Machine for the first time?

I bought a macbook pro in 2008. I recently purchased an external hard drive and I can't decide what's the best option:
    1. Use Time Machine using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ?
    2. Upgrade to Lion before I use Time Machine (first time)
    3. Or just drag my photos and music manually (those are the only things I need to back up)
    Thoughts?

I see. My only fear is there seems to be a lot of people who orginally were using Time Machine on SL, then upgraded to Lion and now Time Machine becomes screwy.
Also, if I buy a new Mac (eventually) with Lion, I worry that if I've been using TM on SL, the transition to Lion wont be smooth. I may be overthinking this, but I just want to get it right.
But I see your point: I need to get a full back up of my system as it is now before I make any changes. Thanks for your help.

  • Before I use Time Machine

I have a quick question that maybe one of you could answer.
I have an external HD, and before I did a clean install, I backed everything up but dragging and dropping my files in my HD to my external HD. Now, after doing a clean install with Leopard, I want to transfer over some thins, mainly my address book.
When I try dragging the application to my desktop, it says it cant launch. Am I screwed? Am I doing something wrong?
    Please help.

  • Info window and file sizes

I've been transitioning into Lion for about half a day now and most new features are welcome.  However I can't figure out why the info window displays the size of a file in bytes then displays it in Gigabytes, megabytes etc.  How on earth is this easier to read?  Is this perhaps a bug and not an improvement??
    For Example:
Lion: 7,043,089,832 bytes (7.07 GB on disk) for 13,115 items
Snow Leopard:  7.07 GB on disk (7,043.......bytes)
I apologize if it seems very nitpicky but it takes about two seconds more to figure out the files attributes (and I use the info window quite a bit).
I suppose I could open the infowindow nib file with interface builder and swap them (the filesize templates) but a hassle...anyone else annoyed/confused with this new layout??
    Thanks!

In all honesty it looks the same to me as always,  but I will take your word on it.
I see it as a non issue.
There are many instances of the nuances of calculating differences if you want to be pedantic:
    df -h
    vs
    df -H
    DESCRIPTION
The df utility displays statistics about the amount of free disk space on
the specified filesystem or on the filesystem of which file is a part.
Values are displayed in 512-byte per block counts.  If neither a file or
a filesystem operand is specified, statistics for all mounted filesystems
are displayed (subject to the -t option below).
         The following options are available:
-a      Show all mount points, including those that were mounted with the
                 MNT_IGNORE flag.
-b      Use 512-byte blocks rather than the default.  Note that this
overrides the BLOCKSIZE specification from the environment.
-g      Use 1073741824-byte (1-Gbyte) blocks rather than the default.
Note that this overrides the BLOCKSIZE specification from the
                 environment.
-H      "Human-readable" output.  Use unit suffixes: Byte, Kilobyte,
Megabyte, Gigabyte, Terabyte and Petabyte in order to reduce the
number of digits to three or less using base 10 for sizes.

Megabyte, Gigabyte, Terabyte and Petabyte in order to reduce the
number of digits to three or less using base 2 for sizes.
-i      Include statistics on the number of free inodes.

  • Page outs is TWO to THREE TIMES page ins

Have been having much trouble with a slow Macbook and have been reading on this forum for solutions. Please know that I have little understanding of any of this stuff although I do know enough to check Activity Monitor---and my page outs can be 2 to 3 times my page ins. Isn't that really unusual? Is my little Macbook in serious trouble? The spinning beachball and slowness happen usually after I've been using Safari for quite awhile, particularly with lots of tabs and images; if my Trend Microsecurity then decides to update itself, I might as well shut the computer off for the remainder of the night. This is what just happened this afternoon---I got on Safari for the first time today, watched one short video clip, then CRASH---couldn't do anything with any other program or window---then noticed that Trend Micro was updating. I ran Etrecheck at that time (took forever) and then like an idiot somehow lost that log before I could get to this forum. But the page outs were MUCH larger than page ins.  Last night when this happened, page outs were 2.85gb and ins were 898.9mb. One reason I'm confused is because Best Buy's "Apple guy" said I didn't need any RAM.
I'm including the Etrecheck I just ran but things have settled down now so I'm not sure it's telling the whole picture:

    > It's OK to have 8 gb if I still use Snow Leopard? That site said that OS 7 is required for anything over 8 gb
If you have 8 GB in a 2 x 4 GB configuration you can still run Snow Leopard.
These details are confusing.  I myself got confused so I chatted with OWC to straighten it out.  If you have any questions you can chat with them yourself.  Here is what I learned.
OWC told me if you use the 4 GB chips then you can run Snow Leopard.  If you use the 8 GB chips then you must upgrade to 10.7.5 or later (Lion).  If you use the 4 GB chips then you can upgrade to Lion or later.  I also note (as K implied) that for 8 GB total memory the 2 x 4 GB configuration will run faster than a 1 x 8 GB configuration.  So you will want the former.  I confirmed the 4 GB chips are compatible with your Model 7,1.  (That is also confusing on the web site.)
(K spoke about four slots while your Model 7,1 has two slots but the concept is the same.)  You want to fill all slots with memory chips.
MacTracker confirmed you have two memory slots.
              Memory Slots          2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
As K said, if you transition to Lion, the old PowerPC applications such as AppleWoks are no longer supported.  So if you need these old applications then you would want to run Snow Leopard. If and when you need the Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks features you can upgrade to those OSes.
If you ordered a 1 x 8 GB configuration then don’t sweat it.  OWC will gladly take it in return for a 2 x 4 GB configuration.  That is why we recommend OWC and Crucial.  They give excellent customer service.  To be polite I would return the package unopened.  You can chat with them on their live chat line or on the phone about a return, if needed.

  • Urgent: can't restore from time machine *.inprogress, permissions

    Hi there,
I have quite a problem. Wanting a clean Lion install I backed up my mac yesterday via Time Machine but all there is today is a *.inprogress file. I already did the transition to Lion, as said ... clean install. I counted on Time Machine.
Although I can open the package and extract data from it, iTunes and Aperture won't accept the libraries as I don't have the right permissions or ownership. Nothing I tried (changing permissions from within the finder, repairing permissions) helped. Looks like I have a read only status on these files. I need help. 10 years of photos are at stake. Luckily my music is still on another mac and other personal data is in the cloud... .
    Thanks in advance...
    Marco

That's an incomplete, partial package left over from a failed or cancelled backup.  Do not depend on anything in it, and do not try to copy things from your backups via the Finder.
Was that the first time you backed-up?

    Axiom 25
    Trigger Finger
I purchased my new laptop all most 2 months ago and have not been able to start making music on it since. Lots of issues transitioning to Lion. I am still using my old macbook to make music. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
