Transitioning audio in iMovie 13

I have a Macbook pro with retina. How can I transition from one audio clip to another by fading out of clip and into another smoothly? I used to be able to do it on iMovie 11 but can't seem to figure it out for iMovie 13. I can't find any way to do it in forums or by youtube video. Has that ability gone away from the older versions? The new way of fading in and out of audio clips is archaic and just stupid!!!

Fading of audio tracks is done via fade handles. It is described in detail in: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3b5ded23e
If you put a Cross Dissolve transition between two clips the audio should fade between the two just like the video.
If you have separate or detached audio clips (in green) and "Show Waveforms" is checked (film icon at upper right of timeline pane) they will also show fade handles when you move the playhead over them. To create a gradual transition from one to the other put fades on both of them and overlap them on the timeline.

Problems with transition audio in imovie HD

When I add a transition (dissolve) in imovie HD i get the audio repeating itself in the transition. It repeats itself from the clip before. Does anyone know why this is happening.

Never had this problem until I started using MP4 as the video format for my iMovies. Straight from the Sanyo Xacti camcorder into iMovie as MP4 resulted in the transition and video effect audio garbling. Tried the extract audio workaround and it does work, but gets cumbersome with all those audio clips "locked" at dozens of different places. Also high risk of getting all the audio out of sync if you forget, and make minor cuts and rearrangments after the audio had been extracted.
I took the same MP4 clips and dragged them into a DV iMovie project. Took a while to import/convert, but then the transitions and video effects worked fine without having to extract the audio.

Choppy Audio in iMovie Transitions

I'm editing some video for a keynote. I am putting three different movie clips together and trying to use Transitions. Every time I drag a transition between two movie clips the transition audio is very choppy, sounds like crap. Anyone else experience this? Fix?

I "think" I figured out why when you apply the transitions the audio becomes choppy.
I was just doing this today as well. My video was recorded in 720i on my camcorder, but when I was importing it into imovie I chose the quicktime format to edit my video. So I think it was because imovie had to compress your higher quality video and that's when the sound and transition failed to work together.
So I realized that if I chose the format 720i to edit my video (matching the quality that it was recorded in) there were no audio issues and you do not have to extract the audio from it.

TS2289 Audio in iMovie 11 files but missing in sections when shared to iDVD. The movie and audio plays fine in iMovie but my burned iDVD movie is missing some audio .

I imported a movie into iMovie 11 from a Canon Vixia HFR 300 SD card with no problem. I have a new iMac running OsX 18.8.4 I think. I added chapter markers and shared it with iDVD. And burned it to a DVD. Towards the end of this 30 minute movie the sound just stops. I do remember some screen came up when I wanted to burn DVD that said something was wrong with files but I couldn't figure what do to fix it and allowed me to continue. Any ideas?

No Audio in iMovie
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
Work around -
• Select needed audio to one new playlist
• Copy out this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
• Use this in the movie-project
Other origins are
1. strange / alient file formats as -
• .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
• Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
• Close iMovie and other programs
• Start GarageBand
• Make a new GB-project and play some notes
• Close GB and Save
• Now try iMovie again
3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.
a. in iMovie pref. - deselect ” Playback via Camera”
b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
without me knowing why.
4. iMovie’08 & 09 & 11
• Toggle audio-scimming by cmd-K
Stuttering audio and video
1. FileVault is ON - Turn it off
2. More than 50 audio files in a movie-project
Mix down to one audio clip
3. Project is stored on one (USB) external hard disk - should be a FireWire one
4. the External hard disk is not Mac OS Extended formatted - but
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange and this will not work for Video.
5. To little free space on internal boot hard disk.
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space when project is imported and edited and this goes for
4x3 SD Video. For 16x9 HD my guess would be about 5 times more at least.
Neither Mac OS, iMovie or iDVD can address any other hard disk than the boot drive for it’s
scratch files. (Unlike Final Cut Express/Pro where You select scratch disk/s)
6. Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
No audio on DVD disc.

• In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)

large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.

4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
Before burning the DVD.
• Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
• Double click on the .img file
• Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
• In iDVD 08 - or - 09
• Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
•OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

Add audio to imovie without itunes

I'm having trouble with the newest version of itunes (11.2.1) so that I will have the audio I made to add to my movie. Is there another way to import the audio into imovie? It is an audio tape and itunes was working great for this, but I can't do it any longer. Please help!

How to add audio to iMovie on the iphone?

The speak recorder on the iphone is ok to record audio. But how do I get those recordings into imovie on iphone? Its the latest imovie (2.0?) on iOS7 on iphone 5.

What I hope to do is to get audio recording fra the that speach recorder app that comes with iOS. The recordings can only be exported through mail, messages and dropped with Airdrop.
Hmm maybe with itunes in some way.
I would like to use speach recorder and then import that audio into imovie, not the audio effects that are with imovie.

How to i trim audio in imovie 11

I just separated audio from an imovie clip, and now need to slice the audio in various places and and place back into the video. HOW DO I TRIM AUDIO in imovie 11. The old imovie was easy, I can't seem to find out how. Thanks.

There are several ways to do this.
First go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure the Advanced Tools are enabled.
The simplest way would be to select the frames of video in the Event that contain your audio and drag to the project. Drop it on the approximate frame (in the project) where you want it to start. A pop-up menu will appear: choose Audio Only.

No USB Audio In Imovie

I have been trying to use my Logitech USB headset for recording audio in iMovie for over two days now,
I change the settings in System prefs and also in imovie but i can only record audio through the internal mic on my 24'' imac. Is anyone else running across this problem?

As mentioned, the "Audio Only" option is in QuickTime X (there are only 2 options: movie or audio). I'm not sure what version of Mac OS you are using, but QT X is part of the OS. Sorry to hear you are not having any success. I'm a little vague on this, but some time ago I recall having a problem with voiceovers not playing. What I think worked was to click on the Project Library, then click on another project and wait until it loaded in the Viewer (no need to actuaaly open it by double-clicking). Then re-open your current project. If my memory serves me correctly, the voiceover then played properly in the timeline. Give this a try!
I noticed another thread where the poster is having a similar problem to yours. I'll post a link in that thread to this thread. Hopefully something here may help that user.

New Sony DCR-SR200 clips don't play audio in iMovie 09

I have previously imported 100's of video clips from Sony DCR-SR200 to imovie 09 with no issue.
I imported several more yeterday and none play the audio...including some that I had previously imported (and work fine) and had left on the camera and re-imorted. I played one of the files with Streamclip and there is audio.
running iMovie 09 v 8.0.6 and OS X 10.6.5
any ideas?

Seems that Apple has been reading the Microsoft playbook and by providing a free "upgrade" to iMovie 09 from 08 has now removed the ability to import MPEG2 files directly...where previously you could.
I can now pay to upgrade to '11 which claims to support MPEG2 on this camera. Has anyone else been down this road and paid to fix what Apple broke for free? Cost isn't the issue, just hoping to avoid the hassle of the upgrade to discover it won't work

Capturing Video w/Audio in iMovie?

Hi,
I was just wondering if it's possible, using the iSight and the built-in mic on a MBP, to capture video w/audio with iMovie? Or just video w/out audio? I tried to capture video, but the audio didn't seem to come through at all. If it's not possible, any program reccomendations?

Audio from iMovie 10.1 to garageband??

wanting to edit some sound from iMovie, so Just wondering if anyone knows how to get audio from iMovie 10.1 in to garage band at all? i have found numerous tips and videos from the previous versions but not 10.1?? can anyone help

Curious also is that in the new Garageband 10.0.1, the media broswer only shows the "old" iMovie library (from 9.0.9), you can though browse all movies in the movie folder, (so except the new iMovie 10 Library)
So either you share your movie with iTunes (that you can look up in the mediabrowser of GB) or export as an mp4 movie tot your movies folder, which you can approach as well via the media browser in GB 10.0.1

I can't Import Video, Transitions & Audio From One Project To Another

I've been working on this video all day and I’m finally in the home stretch but I've encountered my biggest problem yet. This is what I want to do. I have a series of clips, transitions, and separate music track in 1 open project and I want to transfer the whole kit and caboodle to another open project. For some reason when I do it only imports the video and some audio that's in track 1. I have tried locking audio clips to the video but it doesn't seem to be working. Can anyone help me!? I'm bleary eyed already I've been at this so long. Thanks!

catspaw: Thanks for replying!!! I think I was unclear as to what my problem was. The way I work is to have one Master project open and I then import various clips from other secondary projects as I build my movie. I know . . . this might seem nutty it’s just how I work. The clips, sound and transition were from a separate project but they were only part of the main movie I was building in my Master Project. Am I making any since? Anyway, I couldn’t take it any more so I rolled up my sleeves and went 1 by 1 through the audio clips and lined them up by hand with the imported video. I know this must be almost INPOSSIBLE to understand the way I’m explaining it, sorry! Basically, though, for now, I’ve solved the problem. Thanks so much! I’ll post again when I have my next iMovie anxiety attack.

Ghost Audio in iMovie 6

Hey gang, I'm a new Mac owner (four months old now) and I'm having a problem adding visual effects or transitions to the end of clips in iMovie.
The transition works visually but its also adding random audio snippits on top of the main audio. Naturally this really bunging up my nice fades and dissolves.
Everything was working fine early on but I started to notice this happening more and more as the project got larger.
Suggestions?

I do not follow you, unless you mean changing the volume level in the box below the track, by typing the change. That is not the way to go. Click on the speaker symbol and that will display a vertical slider with which you adjust the volume.
You can also 'Show Clip Volume Levels' in the View Menu, and more finely adjust volumes - fades etc.
Sometimes when you add an audio clip it positions itself wrongly (not at the playhead position). Could that be what has happened? Or maybe the audio was not locked to its related clip, so it moves when further video clip editing takes place?
