Transitioning from Homepage - iweb: spoke too soon....

I thought I had it now I have to post back with follow up questions. I didn't realize that others had bookmarked to pages within my original site. Those people are now getting 404 errors.
Anyone who types in http://homepage.mac.com/myusername is redirected correctly. Is there a way to catch others who may be trying to hit "deeper" within the orignal? Failing that is there even a way to linke the orignal "start page" that I had created so that it also forwards to my iweb site?
Hope this makes some sense.
Thanks,

There really isn't an easy way to redirect all the URLs from the Homepages system to your new iWeb pages. I guess, if you still had the Homepages .html files there in your iDisk/Sites/ folder, you could replace them with the redirection file (index.html) that you made and name it the same thing as whatever file you are replacing. But it sounds like you have already erased those Homepages files.
Anyways, it's probably a good thing to make a clean break. Start telling people about your iWeb URL. And get them to bookmark the short iWeb address: http://web.mac.com/username That will always lead to your default start page no matter how many times you change it in iWeb.

  • [unsolved (spoke too soon)] CD burner hanging

    Edit 2: Turned out not to be VMWare; once I started using the machine today (w/o running vmware), the drive went out again.
    Edit: Well, I think this is actually a VMWare issue. I usually have VMs running for work, but rebooted at the end of the day yesterday and didn't fire up VMWare, and the drive seems to be behaving itself. So, marking as solved for now, and will follow up on the vmware side...
    For the last couple of months, I've had an issue with my PATA CD drive where it randomly "hangs" sometime after booting. At first I thought it was a hardware issue, but replacing the drive yields the same results. I don't see any particular pattern to what triggers it, but it's definitely the case that the drive is fine on initial boot (am able to mount discs, burn via k3b, etc.); eventually, however, the following shows up in dmesg:

    Which makes sense, as I assume the device can no longer be accessed. In fact, if anything tries to access /dev/hdc at this point, it will simply cause that process to hang and become unkillable. For example, mkinitcpio will fail to run when it's in this state; I have to actually remove the device node ('rm /dev/hdc') in order to get anything that scans devices to work.
    I'm currently running kernel v2.6.32 (i686); but, again, this has actually been happening for a while. I've searched both the bbs and google for these sorts of errors, but haven't turned up too much. There's some talk of adding options to grub lines, but none of the suggestions seemed specific enough to simply try and pray. Other details:

    I had sort of decided this was some weird hardware issue, and stopped investigating it. I "get by" by blacklisting the ide_cd_mod kernel module; when I need to use the drive (relatively infrequently), I modprobe ide_cd_mod, do what needs doing, then rmmod it. This is about 90% effective, but every now and then the problems triggers while the module is loaded, and I have to reboot to get the device working properly. Anyway, from my experience it's really just the existence of the device node in /dev that causes the issue; if I allow the kernel module to load but manually rm the device node, I don't see the device hang. So, given that and the randomness of the timing, this does seem like some process or set of processes accessing the device node in an unexpected manner... it's a frustratingly hard bug to google for; I test it out every few kernel releases, but have had the issues continue. I guess once hal is fully deprecated and I can remove that, it'll be one fewer potential problem source.

  • Was iWeb released too soon?

    I'm wondering if iWeb was released before it was ready, as there seem to be be few very obvious bugs and major failings
    For example iWeb does not use the full range of HTML character entities which causes some web servers to serve up some very strange objects on pages if you use apostrophes or similar punctuation.
    For examples look here: http://tinyurl.com/9xh98
    And here: http://tinyurl.com/cav2k
    I've also discovered that iWeb cannot copy pages. For example you spend a fair bit of time laying out a page and getting the formatting just right, and then you discover you can't duplicate it, copy it, or do a save as. So for your next web page you have to start all over again.
    Publishing with FTP is next to useless because you can't upload only the changed files. For example if I make a minor change to one page and then save the changes using publish to a folder, iWeb then re-writes almost the entire web site to your local folder. Then when I use an FTP client like Transmit to synchronize with the remote site, Transmit has to upload almost the entire site because every local file has overwritten. Not a good thing to do with a 50 or 100MB web site.
    As a web publishing application, iWeb seems crude, very limited, and not ready for inclusion in a major suite of applications like iLife.

    For example iWeb does not use the full range of HTML
    character entities which causes some web servers to

    If you switch your browser to UTF-8, you will see that these pages are displayed correctly. This presumably means that the server you are using forces all browsers into Latin-1. This is wrong, web servers should let the page code (UTF-8 for all iWeb pages) determine what the browser does, and not force everyone to use ascii character entity codes for the hundred thousand characters not in Latin-1. You might want to ask the folks who run that server to change this.
    You could argue that iWeb should allow users to choose their own encoding, like more sophisticated programs do, but it is a lot easier for most to not need to deal with the question.
    The current apparent inability to easily make custom templates is obviously a shortcoming, but hardly a reason to delay issuing the program, at least in my view.

  • ARGH! I spoke too soon....

    iTunes store has died....AGAIN!
    I got it working for a DAY after a fix was sent to my machine and now it's back to the way it was
    Is everyone else still getting the network connection error?

    I haven't tried using the TC as a router, because my iMac is in my office, this is also where the Phone / ADSL point is. This would mean that I'd have to have the TC in the same room as the iMac which is something I wanted to avoid from a security point of view (i.e if iMac gets stolen, I still have data!).
    Should it really make a difference though? The internet is wired through ethernet and the only wireless connection I have via airport is to the TC.
    placing the TC in the office kind of defeats the object of the purchase. I'll give it a try as a router anyway, but should my setup still play a part in a slow (wired) internet connection?
    Any support or input is greatly appreciated,
    Regards,
    Stuart

  • I spoke too soon!

    This refers to my earlier post about Stupendous plug-ins. I had had trouble with the "masks and Composites" plugin, being unable to see the "blue screen - smooth" filter listed with the other filters in that package. I thought I had fixed it by doing a "permission repair". Don't know why, but that made the filter finally appear, (or was that just coincidence?)
    The point is, when I shut down iMovie, and reopened it, the plugin in question was gone! All the others that I had recently installed were still there, but not the particular one that I've had trouble with!
    Is there any procedure I can carry out that will fix this, (which doesn't involve the use of a sledge-hammer?)

    Kurtain,
    Please keep all post related to the same topic in the same thread. Starting a need thread with the same related topic can become confusing. -:)
    Please post which version of Quicktime you're using.
    This is what I posted in your other thread.
    Installation Troubleshooting
    Q. When I start iMovie, I get an error message: "Something is wrong with the plugin <name>."
    A. This means that you have installed the wrong version of the plugin (OS9 plugin in OSX iMovie, or vice versa). There are two versions of each plugin in a download: the OS9 version and the OSX version, each in its own folder. You either installed (copied) the contents of the wrong OS folder, or you installed the whole Stupendous folder, which means both versions of the plugin were installed.
    Q. I'm running OSX. I installed the plugins but they don't show up in iMovie.
    A. There are two folders called Library in OSX. One is at the top level, the second is in your Home folder. Make sure you have put the plugins in this second folder.
    I'm a fan of Slick plugins myself, hope this helps

  • Any way to add a link FROM HomePage TO iWeb?

    Any way to add a link FROM HomePage TO iWeb? The instruction I found in Help only discussed adding a link from iWeb to HomePage. Since most of my family already accesses my HomePage, I'd like to be able to add a link to the iWeb pages
    This is the only instruction I've been able to find in connection with this topic: "If you’ve previously published webpages using HomePage, those pages are still available at http://homepage.mac.com/YourMemberName. Websites you create in iWeb are available at http://web.mac.com/YourMemberName/iweb/SiteName. If you’ve created webpages using the .Mac HomePage feature, you can put a link to your old homepage on the first page of your new iWeb site. On your iDisk, your HomePage sites are stored in the Sites folder. Your iWeb sites are in the Web folder."
    Thanks
        I use both my Mac and my Dell

    I'll try this, but why in the world should it be so complex? I'll let you know if it works. but how do we tell Apple/Mac that this shouldn't be rocket science, but rather something that's done with the click of a button. They're both .mac software products. Why can't they talk to each other?

  • Is there a way to extract the transitions from the trailers in iMovie '11 to use in my own movie?

    I want to create an iMovie, and I'd like to use bits and pieces from the different movie trailers templates. Is there a way for me to extract just the transitions from these trailers.
    I don't want to use the trailers themselves as they are now because the options are too limited in respect to how I can create the movie. For example, there are times where I only want two words on the screen, but I am forced to use three instead. Also, I would like to delete such things as "cast" and "credits," but it doesn't seems like I can do that either.
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cheers.

    Rommel Cinco wrote:

    No there is not.
    You could create a trailer, share it and then re-import and cut out just the pieces you want, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

  • Trying to embed images from my iWeb site

    Sorry if this has been asked before but I did a search and could not find any answers.
    I upgraded from iLife 06 to 08 and managed to get a seamless transition of my iWeb site. The only problem now is that I seem unable to embed images from my site into other web pages on other sites. It used to be a case of copying and pasting the image address into the other web page. Now however it comes up with a very different looking image address that no longer ends with .jpg(jpeg) I have tried adding the .jpg to the end of the address without any success. Am I simply missing the obvious or is this feature no longer available?
    Thanks for any help

    Disable slideshow or not won't effect the way javascript render photos page images into canvas and anchor links.
    But, You can:
    1) get Safari 3.1.1, and turn on Develop menu. Safari -> Preferences... -> Advanced -> Show Develop menu in menu bar (bottom item). This allows you to see all the elements in the page.
    2) get Firefox, FF has DOM Inspector and Page Info.
    With the above, you will have to wade thru the info and fish out the links. or,
    3) using script to do the heavy lifting (scripting is your friends), there two free scripting languages: AppleScript and JavaScript in every mac.
    Combine the two and with understanding of iweb and DOM and you have the ultimate tools for iweb developing, here is the result of your first three links (I have all of them, but just post three here):

  • HTMLLoader fires complete event too soon ?

    Hi to all,
    I have following problem i`m displaying pdf in a nativewindow (pdf is around 5 mb so i guess it takes some time to be rendered) I want to show user some custom progress bar until pdf is prepared to be shown in htmlLoader.The problem is that Event.COMPLETE is being dispatched too soon, pdf is not prepared to be shown.I tried with HTML_DOM_INITIALIZE event but same thing happened.
    I don`t want users to see empty window, i want to either progress bar or fully loaded PDF be shown.
    I figure out some workaround : i will download file from the location and open it up with openWithDefaultApplication() option within AIR 2, but i want to now if i can do it the way i wanted at the first place.
    Am i doing something wrong or there is some problem with HTMLLoader ?
    Here is simple code:
    htmlLoader.location = url;
    htmlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,onLoad);
    onLoad (...)
    //hide progress bar

    Dmennenoh, pulling the playSound function out of the other functions worked perfectly!  I should have known better.  Even though everything is working correctly I am now recieving an error stating that "Parameter url must be non-null."  I'm certain this has to do with the sound file urls that I am passing from the xml document... but if the sounds are playing the urls must be non-null already.
    I tried changing the tl["snd"+i] to container_mc["snd"+i] as you suggested but the sounds would not play at that point.  I recieve an error saying: "a term is undefined and has no porperties."  Below is how I built it:
    function buildScroller():void{
         for (var i:Number = 0; i < 55; i++){
            //create movie clips
            var container_mc:container = new container();
            addChild(container_mc);
            container_mc.x = 325 * i;  // set the number here to the width of the movie clip being repeated
            //sound info
            container_mc["snd"+i] = new Sound();
            container_mc["snd"+i].load(new URLRequest(xmlData.sound.loc[i]));
            container_mc.snd = container_mc["snd"+i];
            container_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, playSound, false, 0, true);
    function playSound(event:MouseEvent):void {
         event.currentTarget.container_mc.play();

  • Ntp service depends on dns but is started too soon

    Given servers defined in /etc/inet/ntp.conf, the service starts interactively (svcadm enable ntp) with an initial ntpdate call to set the clock.
    However, this fails on boot up as the servers are not found unless defined in /etc/inet/hosts. As a consequence, there can be a significant initial offset from the RTC, which corrupts the clock drift value and takes hours longer to stabilise.
    This implies that the ntp service is being started too soon before dns whereas it should be started after dns.

    I would check to see if this is still true in the most recent releases of Solaris Express. If it is, you can log a bug about it.
    For your existing machines, you could probably create a dependency on milestone/name-services for the ntp service and see if that fixes it.

  • Transition from Captivate 4 to 7

    I was in the process of purchasing Captivate 7 and downloaded a free trial. I am having troubles transitioning from Captivate 4 to 7. Is this possible? Am I too outdated?
    I would like to know what options I have.
    Thank you!

    Hello There,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
    I think Lilybiri has explained your concern much better.
    Captivate 4 used to work with Action script 2 and now in Adobe Captivate 7 you have Action script 3 ,
    You will not be able to migrate them directly as the captivate 4 projects were saved with extension of .cp and Captivate 7 don't give an option to open .cp files
    So you might need to switch your projects from Captivate 4  to 5 then 5.5 and then 7 and after this transition your projects might not behave exactly the same in Captivate 7 as they were in Captivate 4.
    Thanks and regards

  • Removed my ipod too soon how do i refresh my ipod forget where info is in manual

    i removed my ipod too soon and lost all my songs except one how do i refresh it to make it work again I cant find it in manual

    If the shuffle's storage has data corruption, you should do a Restore.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the shuffle, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  You can then set it up to sync or load it manually from your iTunes library, as desired.
    If you are asking about how to load content on an empty shuffle, please post back.

  • Transitioning from one  chart of accounts to another one

    Hi everybody, my client is transitioning from one chart of accounts to another. There is basically a table that translates old account nomenclature to the new one.
    Example: old one 00734000 > new one 7340000000
    In Bex, when i run a simple query with cost element jerarchy in it, it gives me good result, but at the same time when i go to BW and see the same jerarchy, it shows me the old nodes ??!!
    Any idea, why there is this difference?
    And a general question, anyone has already done it? How did you do it? Because we have to check every corner of BW to see if everything's ok and it's a nightmare!!

    Hi,
    It is the nature of BW to store some data like that.
    Even the data like dates, sometimes it stores in the format of "782.663" (example). But if you use the same field in query and when you execute, you will get the perfect date like "05/05/2008".
    This might be the scenario in your case too.
    Regards,
    KK.
