Transitions cause audio/ video sync problem

Lets see if I can explain this one. Its certainly an odd problem.
I have an iMovie project, with around a couple hundred photos in it, and some short video clips. Im putting transitions in between everything.
At some point I noticed that, sometimes, I'll add a transition after a video clip, and then the last few seconds still have my audio from that clip but the video changes to a photo 2 photos later in the time line. Then it changes to the next photo after the clip.
Im using the latest iMovie HD, and Quicktime Pro 7.5.5, and Mac OS X 10.5.4.

Hi
I do like this:
• Select the video-clip
• goto Advance menu - select extract audio
• now apply transition
• adjust audio clip

  • 'Source play' and 'audio-video sync' problems with PE8 on fast WIN7 64 bit computer

I am transferring Hi8 videos, about 2 hours long, to my WIN7 64 bit computer with PE8.  [Dell Mobile Precision M4400 Computer Workstation (Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 500GB/4GB); NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M, 512MB] I seem to have several problems:
First, after importing the file (.avi), I get a message about ‘dropped frames.’
Secondly, when I try to play the video in the source monitor, the audio plays but the video doesn’t; it only shows the first frame [this is after waiting until the video is ?recognized? ]   I can use the shift-arrow key and see that the video is there.
Thirdly, I can play the .avi file in other players, e.g., avidemux or PE pro CS5 on another computer.  There, I see that the audio and video are not in sync; the audio can be up to 300 ms ahead of the video (as determined using avidemux).
    Questions:
    1.  Why doesn’t the source monitor play the video? Is this a problem with PE8 (latest update as of 3 March 2011) on aWIN7 64 bit computer (intel duo core. 3 GHz).
    2. Is the audio-video sync problem the result of the ‘dropped frames?’ How can PE8 correct this? Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence?

"I think you're telling me you're using a backwards compatible Digital8  camcorder to capture your video as DV-AVIs. Is that right?" YES
"Are you using  Premiere Elements to do this capturing?" YES, AS ABOVE PE8
"Go to the File menu and select Properties. It should show a standard DV codec being used for your video and audio."
WMP v12 is dumb. Under properties, media, it says 'video.'  However, avidemux gave me the information state above: video -- Codec 4CC: dvsd, frame rate: 29.971 fps; audio -- codec: PCM, channels: Stereo, frequency: 48 kHz.
    So, back to the Questions:

  • BUG: Speed Change + Audio Transition = No Audio-Video Sync

BUG: Speed Change + Audio Transition = No Audio-Video Sync
If you change the speed of clips (125%) and make an audio transition between them (power), the audio runs out of sync. The longer the transition, the more out of sync.

  • Audio/video sync problem

I use a standalone home-theater type dvd recorder to make recordings. I don't know too much about the video editing world yet, I only know how to do what I need to do.
I had some problems opening my dvd files with PE7, so as per advice I received in these forums this is my process:
I copy the vob files to the hard drive, use a batch file to join them together, use streamclip to convert to avi format that PE7 reads. From there I do my PE7 editing.  This has always worked well, until today the original recording was done a little different.
Usually, I have 1 recording session. Hit record, hit stop, finalize, done.  But today, I made a mistake and hit stop too soon, so I started recording a 2nd session. I don't see why this should be a problem, but this is the only thing different that's happened today.
So this is what it's doing in PE7 now. The video from the 1st recording session is fine, once I get to the portion of the video that's part of the 2nd recording session, the audio continues normally but the video is moving very fast.  Later on in the video, the video part resumes moving normally, but is of course playing at the wrong place so the sync is still out.
The original dvd plays fine, it's only on the computer this is happening.  What can I do?
    thanks

Also, how do I fix this capture to make it right?  The dvd I'm ripping from is good, but why is my ripping process not working as it always does? thanks
Unfortunately, I do not know the programs, or the processes that you used to rip the DVD.
My strongest recommendation would be to use a bridge device, to do the capture from the DVD player. I use a Turtle Beach, but would recommend the Canopus/Grass Valley. The biggest problem with going from a DVD to an editable file and then probably back to an edited DVD is that you end up with two MPEG-2 conversions. The quality hit is major, IMO.
Here is a ripping workflow, that might yield in-sync files, though dealing with MPEG-2 files often yields OOS issues.
As for the OOS issues, when you have a dynamic OOS, you will need to repeat the process on smaller pieces of the movie. The Scissors/Razor tool will be used, and you will need to cut your Clips and adjust the OOS for the "pieces." Obviously, a constant OOS is easier, as you make one adjustment that works for the whole Timeline. With dynamic/drifting OOS, you must do this incrementally.
As MPEG-2 files often yield a myriad OOS issues, I refrain from using them and will convert all to DV-AVI Type II w/ 16-bit 48KHz PCM/WAV, prior to Import. I hate doing extra work and dynamic/drifting OOS is a lot of work.
If at all possible, I would keep DVD (and MPEG-2 files) out of the workflow, until you go to Burn the final delivery DVD-Video, but that is just me.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Help with Audio/Video Sync Problem

I have a couple of video Podcasts that I watch on my iPod (5.5G) and they work just fine on the iPod. However, when I watch them on my Vista machine the audio is not synchronized with the video. My machine is up-to-date when it comes to drivers and I'm not running any significant background processes.
I am running iTunes 7.6 on my Windows Vista notebook computer. I have noticed this problem for the last few versions of iTunes and I don't know if this happened with version 6.x of iTunes.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Regular problem with video playback & audio video sync

So, I am regularly having two problems (I wonder whether they are connected) that I cannot solve and am hoping someone can tell me if I am out of luck or if I need to do something or add something.
For example, because it happened again today. These are details about the file stuff:
    Type:AVI
    Bit Rate:133kbps
    Dimensions:624x352
    Audio format: LameMP3
    Frame rate: 23 frames/second
    Data Rate: 1131 kbps
    Video Sample Size: 12 bit
    Video Compression: XVID
First Problem: If I play the file - I use Media Player Classic - it plays fine. Open it in Windows Media Player and it plays fine. Try to edit it in Premiere and the file loaded into Premiere is filled with what I believe are called audio video sync problems, so I have to constantly unlink audio and video and adjust it. It loads and does not need to conform.
I have the same problem on my laptop(Windows XP Home) and desktop (XP Pro), the desktop with twice the RAM. I have the K-lite Mega codec pack installed. I would call myself a beginner when it comes to video editing. I understand generally what codecs are but I am not capable to making any tweaks to the K-lite Mega codec pack (if I should have) so it is setup as installed.
Second Problem: The video in the playback box never plays back normally. I have tried adjusting the playback settings: have changed the aspect ratio between the software and harware option and adjusted between the three desktop display options. Occasionally it is "ok" but most of the time not and never just normal.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

I tried this already and then we had a blackout so going to try again and hope it goes through before a second one...lol
    Hello:
Thank you Robert J. Johnston, the_wine_snob, Paul_LS and SteveGrisetti for your help so far.
So this is where I am at now:
Files all seem to be of the same type, so I will just say "the file" for the one I am working with right now.
Loaded file into VirtualDub.  I like that program.  Well done, whoever made it.  Did some basic cutting of unwanted stuff.  Saved as AVI.  Saved both a Direct Stream Copy and a Full Processing Copy.
Opened the FP copy in Premiere Elements and it plays without audio sync problems that I can see. Have edited it some so far and still no problems.
Before I do any more editing work, I decided to save it (SHARE) in different formats to see what happens.
Goal: Looking for no audio sync problems.  Best quality I can get with a 1GB file size limit.
Saved as DV-AVI:  plays fine.  no audio sync probelms.  love the video quality.  2.95GB, so too big
Saved as Flash:  Do not see any audio sync problems.  Do NOT like the quality (flips back and forth between clear and all pixely (is that a word).  32 MG
Saved as Mpeg: Media Player won't play it (thought Media Player with KL Mega Codec played everything?) (It loads it but doesn't play?); Quicktime won't play it.  Windows Media Player just did.  Do not see any audio sync problems.  Like the video quality. 631 MB.
Saved as Windows Media: Do not "think" there are any audio sync problems; if there are, they are very subtle.  Not crazy about video quality.  Better than flash video option though still flickers between two types of qaulity (if that makes sense) . 52MB
Any suggestions as to what I should do at this point to meet my stated goal.  I assume [share]ing is what I should do?  Is there any exporting or any other options I do not know about.  Without your help I figure I will Share to MPEG?  Not sure why Media Player won't play it and Windows Media Player will?
Any thoughts on the best choice for me?  Thanks for your help.

  • Audio/Video sync drift in Premiere CS5.5, but not in CS6

I have a QuickTime file with the following specs:
    Video: H.264, 854x480, 29.99fps
    Audio: AAC, 44100 Hz
When I open the file in QT player, or in Adobe Premiere CS6, there is no issue with Audio/Video sync.
However, when I import the file in Premiere CS 5.5, there is a drift in the Audio/Video sync.
Is there something I can do in Premiere CS 5.5 to avoid or fix the drift?
    Thanks.

I had a similar problem and these are the steps I took to fix it.
First I deleted the files in "Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files" for the project in question. I reopened Premiere and it appeared that deleting those files didn't seem to do anything as everything in the project looked the same.
I then disconnected the drive with the footage on it and opened Premiere. When it asked where the footage was, I told it to Offline All. I then went into Preferences > Media and hit Clean for the Media Cache Database. This had to be done because it only cleans the cache for files that are no longer connected with the project (as noted above). I closed and reopened the project, selected everything in the Project window, right clicked and chose Relink Media. I located one file and it relinked the rest automatically.
Now, finally, Premiere is re-conforming all the audio. Hooray!

  • Old IMac 17'' video sync problem at boot

    Hi,
A friend has brought his IMac 17'', which has a video sync problem. At boot, all screen lines are out of sync, but I can more or less recognize the apple logo, which disappears later. Something happens at least, there is a boot processing going on I think.
I tried to reset the parameter ram, it does not help.
I have heard of a power supply problem that can cause that problem. Is that right? The computer serial is: W8446APAPP7.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Here's a simple test case I've made, it's just a bunch of lines drawn in an orthographic OpenGL view. When you scroll horizontially with scrollbars or by space+dragging, the effect is very noticeble.
The .app and source are available here:

I believe this is the same problem as with the Apple homepage Flash thing. It's not just a problem with Flash.

  • Video Sync Problems in iTunes 11.1/ios 7

I have recently upgraded to ios 7 for my iPad and iPhone, and iTunes 11.1.  I added two new videos to iTunes (.m4v format) and now when I try to sync with my iPad it seems to hang forever on "Waiting for changes to be applied" and then gives me an error message that the videos are not of a format that can be played on the iPad.  This is odd since I already have .m4v videos on my iPad that play just fine.  Moreover, I deselected some videos and they do not delete from my iPad as well.  Is anyone else encountering this?  I have seen some posting regarding music files and playlists not syncing, but nothing about movie files.

I've had video syncing problems (not with music though) when I updated my iPhone 4s to the new IOS 7, but I finally figured it out. What I did was I plugged my 4s in to my computer (Windows 7, 64-bit), then opened iTune (11.1.3.8), clicked on my iPhone tab on the upper right, under "Summary" put a 'check' in the Manually sync music & videos.
Looking at the picture above, notice the: Movies, Music Videos, and  Home Videos; are now available. Before this method, these three wasn't there. These are all in the original Videos app for the iPhone. I hope this help you guys too.

  • MSI VOX Audio / Video Sinc problem

    Hi All.
Last week i bought a VOX TV Tuner.  Nice device works well except for what i want it for.
When I try to cpature at Full PAL DVD resolution I get audio / video sinc problems.  The audio is usually ahead of the video.  Half PAL DVD or below  it's fine.
I suspect it is the basic design of the box that is the trouble.  Having the audio feed to the sound card rather than than in the USB2 feed has been a no no ever since the problem was discovered back in the USB 1 days.  USB2 is capable of 400Megbits..
However I contacted another user who has no problems and says there is a patch for Direct x PAL video capture.  Does any one know of this patch or has any one had the same problem as I have??
This device seems so new that there is no info on the net about it..
    TIA.

  • Audio/Video sync program for Power PC G5

Greetings to ALL,  I am attempting to determine if there is a audio/video sync program for my PPC G5 running 10.5.8?
Suggestions would be great because if I cannot locate a program I am at the end of the road for this little project.
Working with a Nikon D7000 and RODE Pro Mic and looking to get the Tascam DR 100MkII recorder if I can figure out how to get things to jell.
    Thank You, pc

Even if syncing directly is not practical, iTunes can manage audio files, has many organization features for audio, such as playlists and folders of playlist, and tags that can be applied to multiple audio and video files are supported by it.   MPEG4Streamclip offfers a variety of conversion tools that are available for PowerPC for video and will bring videos to work with iTunes.  H.264 MPEG4s are the best for iTunes.
And http://www.lemkesoft.com/ GraphicConverter lets you browse Finder folders, which you can tag by month, and year, and even time, in a hierarchy that makes sure you don't do any duplication.   Since the Nikon D7000 does write to standard SD cards, you just need a Mac OS X 10.5 supporting SD card reader.  Many SansDisk readers supports it.

  • IDVD 08 audio/video sync drift toward end of DVD movie - fix/workaround?

Anyone know how I can fix this issue? It's driving me crazy.
I've just spent a few evenings in iMovie 08, editing together the video of my son's birth. All looked & amazingly good in iMovie. The "Large" .m4v file output by iMovie - Shared with the Media Browser - plays perfectly in Quicktime too.
However, after adding that shared movie to iDVD 08, and burning a DVD, I noticed that the audio sync drifts toward the end of the Movie when plated back. At the start of the DVD all seems well, but by the end of the ~1hr 20 minute movie the audio is unbearably out of sync with the video. Completely unwatchable.
After a little Googling I came across some reports that iDVD might not deal well with video that's been recorded with 12-bit audio. I've confirmed that my camcorder is (was!) set to 12-bit rather than 16-bit (the default, I'm sure). So if that's the problem I'm hosed... it's not like I can get a retake on that footage
Is there a reasonable workaround for this issue? I'm obviously unable to re-take the video (or the other 10 hours of DV video tape I've yet to use in an iMovie project). Ideally I'd like Apple to release a patch for this. Shouldn't it be possible for iDVD to account for audio that was originally recorded in 12-bit... even if it's just a checkbox you have to select to tip it off?
Then again, perhaps this is totally unrelated to the 12-bit issue, and this is just a run of the mill bug?
As I said... iMovie generates a MPEG4 video file of the Movie that looks/sounds perfect, so it seems this sync issue's being created somewhere in iDVD as it's rendering the audio/video to burn to the DVD...
    Thanks in advance.

I've tried most of the options I can think of, and the audio sync drift issue continues on this ~1hr 12 minute iMovie/iDVD 08 project.
A couple of promising ideas tried used QT Pro, to export the audio track from the iMovie generated MPEG-4 file - as a WAV file, resampling to 48kHz and 16-bit... then Adding this back to the video track in the MPEG-4 file (having deleted the original audio track). In another test I also tried the Add to Selection and Scale option. Oddly enough I think the Add to Selection and Scale attempt generated more sync issues than before in the final DVD movie... so I stuck with the MPEG-4 file containing the video track and the added, resampled at 48kHz & 16 bit, WAV audio track.
This was saved as a self contained Movie file, producing a QT .mov file. I moved this .mov file into the iDVD projects directory structure so that it was avalable in iDVD's Media Browser. I then reworked the iDVD project to use this QT large.mov file, instead of the original iMovie large.m4v file.
As a reminder... the original large.m4v file has the following properties:
    29.97 FPS H.264 Decoder, 960 x 540, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    0:01:12:07.16 duration
The resampled and saved QT MOV file has the following properties:
    29.97 FPS H.264 Decoder, 960 x 540, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
    0:01:12:07.16 duration
BOTH versions of this Movie file play flawlessly within QT Pro... there's no audio sync drift evident toward the end of the movie unless I use iDVD 08 to burn either movie file to a Physical DVD (or DVD Disk Image). In both cases the resultant DVD Movie exhibits significant audio sync drift as the ~1hr 12 minute movie progresses. The sync goes out by ~ <= 1 second based on a rough visual assessment.
I've not yet tried to burn either the original iMovie produced MPEG-4 video file or my QT Pro tweaked audio track .MOV file version to a DVD on my PC...
... But I have used an application called Burn (referenced in this earlier/archived iDVD sync drift forum post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1332100 by user F Shippey - http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/) to take the QT Pro tweaked .mov file version of the original MPEG-4 file and burn it to a DVD...
    Results:
The Burn app burnt DVD plays with NO audio sync issues!... Even though it was generated from the same audio tweaked (48kHz/16-bit resampled) QT Pro .mov file.
However, whenever I burn a DVD using iDVD 08 the audio sync gradually drifts. It matters not whether I use the original iMovie 08 generated MPEG-4 movie file, or the QT Pro version of that file with the resampled audio track (the same one that works fine with Burn).
It sure looks to me like iDVD has a problem... Again, refer to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1332100 for someone else who seems to have run into similar challenges.
    Am I overlooking something?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Audio/Video Synch Problem

I have the motorola HD DVR and am using it with the Zenith 19" LCD HDTV I finally got from Verizon.  After watching a channel for a few minutes, the audio and video go out of synch.  If I switch the channels back and forth the problem is corected for a few minutes.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

In regards to an A/V sync problem, I've just noticed in the last two or three days that the voice is no longer synced with the lips on both of my DVR equiped TVs.  One's an HD unit (but TV is Std) and the other is an Std unit.  Will rebooting the units fix or improve this problem?  Is there another way to correct this if that doesn't do it?

  • Movies lose audio/video sync as they progress

I've got a lot of old VHS tapes I'm transferring to DVD-R. I play them on my VHS player connected to DAC-100 converter that goes into iMovie. From iMovie I burn the video either with Toast or iDVD. Either way, a lot of the DVD-R's have the audio out of sync with the video, and some don't! They are synced when I play them back in iMovie before burning.Sometimes the sync on the burnt DVD-R is ok at the beginning but slowing goes out of sync so by the end of the video it's way out of sync. So, what's one to do?? I hate to waste the time & discs but it seems there's no way to know for sure how a DVD-R's going to turn out until you burn it and play it.
And, while I'm at it, the latest version of iMovie HD makes the clips all about an hour long. I prefer them shorter(like in the older versions), but I can find no preference to set a length.
    Help!

I have been bitten by the sync problem as well, and have spent most of this week trying to troubleshoot it. FYI, I've been doing video conversion and editing on PC's for years, but recently moved to OSX, a Datavideo DAC-100 (Firewire DV analog capture device) and the iLife tools.
And before anyone asks, I use 16 bit audio capture. I've verified this by looking at the file that are generated. I've also looked at all the iMovie sync FAQ's on the Internet. Audio sync problems and I are old enemies.
    Here's what I've found:
While the video is in it's original DV file captured by iMovie, the audio sync is perfect. I've done a 3 hour capture, and the sync was fine all the way through.
When and where the sync goes bad is when the audio is extracted from the DV file, whether by manually extracting the audio in iMovie, converting the DV to another format (including another DV file), or 'sharing' the movie to iDVD. I belive this is because the DV file format tightly links the audio to the movie timeline. When the audio is extracted, it is associated to the video only by the length (in time) of the two files. And either the audio is slightly time compressed, or the video is slightly time expanded. I suspect the audio is slightly time compressed.
I've created a predictable test case with my video, where i can capture a 15 minute block of video. At the end of the file the audio sync is perfect while in the DV format , and is ahead of the video by about 1.5 seconds after extracted.
A simple workaround would be to use a sound or video editing package that allows you chop the audio when it goes silent and to stretch the remaining audio to match the length of the video. VirtualDub and CoolEdit for the PC used to be able to do this. I've tried doing this with Quicktime Pro with no success, though. I'll keep looking for a decent OSX program to try to do this with.
This does, however, only work around the problem, not identify where it is, or fix it.
I think I've also determined that this is a problem in the standard OSX DV stream capture API, not in the conversion process of Quicktime from DV audio to whatever.
I used BTV Pro (http://www.bensoftware.com/), a shareware/capture tool that can handle DV streams on my test case. The results were EXACTLY the same as under iMovie. I believe that BTV uses OSX's standard APIs for accessing DV streams from firewire.
Additionally, I've extracted the audio from the test DV using a non-apple DV codec (ffmpeg), and reimported it to iMovie and Quicktime. It is identical to the bad sync audio that iMovie extracts.
This leads me to believe that it's a problem with either the DAC-100's DV streams (which is set to the OSX dip switch settings) or OSX's DV capture API.
I then installed Avid Free DV (http://www.avid.com/freedv/index.asp), a free stripped down version of a high end OSX video editing package, and successfully captured the 15 minute test case, exported it to a DV file (using both the AVID and Apple DV codecs), imported the resulting DV file into iMovie, and extracted the audio. The extracted audio synced perfectly with the video in iMovie at this point.
Just to make sure that Avid didn't just 'fix' a bad DV file, I did another test capture from iMovie, and imported the file into Avid Free DV. The resulting video had the expected sync problem, which was expected since Avid uses Quicktime for importing and exporting video.
This points the problem squarely at the Apple capture APIs, as I believe that AVID uses its own. For some reason, the files generated by iMovie/BTV exhibit the sync problems when the audio is extracted in all cases, while files generated by Avid Free DV do not.
I still don't know what the issue is with OSX/iMovie and my DAC-100. I also know that not all DAC-100 users have the problem, nor do all iMovie users with their equipment. This could be a codec incompatibility with the version of firmware on the DAC-100 with OSX, a bug in the cap
