Transitions changing clip duration

I have laid out all my clips on the timeline to tightly coordinate with the audio track. I have added a number of transitions... mainly cross dissolves, without problem but then I add one more and all my clips have miraculously shortened their duration... If I try to readjust the duration using photo settings and click update all is good, the clip resizes itself in the timeline, but then until after it renders and it then reverts back to its shortened duration. I suspect this is not normal behaviour.
I've trashed my imovies preference file, but the problem persists. I'm using iMovie HD 6.0.3 (267.2) and running OS 10.5.6 . Any thoughts on a likely fix for this annoyance would gratefully received.
many thanks

hmmm.... If I understand the logic correctly it would be as if I had two clips each with a duration of 5 seconds and I then put a cross dissolve of 2 seconds between them.. which would result in a sequence of 10 seconds comprising one four sec clip, the 2 sec dissolve and then the second 4 sec clip...
However on closer examination this isn't what I'm experiencing... for example: I have two clips a) 6:13 and b) 5:11 the point in the timeline at the end of clip b) is 19:05. I put a cross dissolve of 0:24 between them... a) has now been shortened to 5:19 and b) to 4:17. So it would seem that each clip has been shortened by 24 frames...however the timeline at the start of the transition is now 13:00 and at its other side is 13:24 and the point at the end of clip b) is now 18:11. Therefore it seems to be that a 0:24 cross dissolve is in fact cutting a total of 1:18 from the clips while only adding in 24 frames of dissolve... net net the project shortens.
So... is this normal functionality or is something amiss?

  • Batch change clip duration - multiple photos in iMovie 11

    Hi everyone,
Many thanks to anyone who can help. I know about clicking on the cogwheel to adjust the duration of a single photo, or to apply to ALL photos, but what I'd like to do is select a group of photos out of all the ones I've already added to my movie, and I'd like to adjust the duration of just those photos. Any ideas??
Again, thanks so much if you can help!
    Frizzy

    Hi AppleMan1958,
I tried what you suggested to batch-adjust clip length with 'Show Advanced Tools' checked, but under 'Paste Adjustment', there's still no 'Clip Adjustment' option. None of the available options under it (All, Video, Crop, Video Effect, Speed) works.
    This problem is very frustrating!
Is there a setting to allow you to change clip lengths and transition as you progress through the slide show? And if you make changes in the middle section of the project, then the part ahead of it simply shunts back and forth, instead of changing clip length and transition duration on its own.
I use a MacBook Pro running OS X and iMovie 11.
    Regards,

  • Can't change clip duration Motion 5

I have tried all of the work arounds I have been able to find in the Support Commnity and still I can't change the duration of source clips in Motion 5.  I have trashed plist, rebooted, repaired permisions, changed timing of project, changed name of clip, used the Timeline clock instead of the Instpector window.  Cleared all In / Out points and reset them to slightly different values. I have changed Timing to Variable and back again.  I can open clips in a new project and change duration.  I have opened new project and copied some layers from working project, the problem persists.  Is reinstall the option left available to me?

    BenB,
The specifics: Motion 5.0.4 Timeline is set to 6 minutes, the Media is 5:59;21 (QT,mp4, H264,1280x720, 24fps). Imported via File Browser into Layer Group (Group In / Out points are 0 and 6 mins, as is Play Range).  At one time the clip was in it's full duration.  Afterr a crash / restart it is only 01:52;27.  I can not Drag the clip to its full length. I cannot change it's duration thru the Inspector, not the Timeline Clock.
In an effort to isolate the issue I opened a new Project (same time setttings as original Project, imported the clip, which plays to it's full duration, and then, one at a time, copied and pasted all Filters and Parameters and Objects from the original Project; all play fine.  Then I copied the original Layer Group in it's entirety to the Test Project, and the clip is still limited to 01:52;27.  I then used Replace Media to select a random clips (same format) with varying Duration (all longer than 01:52;27) and got the same result every time; Duraton 01:52;27. Not one element of the Test Project has an In / Out set to anything other than the full Duration of the Project.

  • Can't fully change clip duration...

    Hello all
My students and I are doing a claymation type project and I am having some difficulty changing the clip durations once I've imported the photos into iMovie. I can get them in and changed down to 0:00:14 but not any shorter. I should be able to set them as fast as 0:00:03... If I change the clips individually, I can set them to 0:00:03, but if I try to change more than one at a time, the lowest is 0:00:14. With 500 odd photos for each group, changing the length one clip at a time isn't really a feasible option. Any suggestions?

Yes, the pics have to be in the Timeline before they can be adjusted.
Great that it's now working for you. As a retired teacher myself, I know what it feels like when things don't work as they should, and you have a disgruntled class breathing down your neck! Good luck with the project - sounds interesting.
Here's an explanation of PAL and NTSC:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL
They are Television Broadcasting formats - your part of the world uses NTSC, many other parts use PAL, and some others eg France uses SECAM. They use differing frame rates, so are largely incompatible with each other.

  • Change clip duration iMovie

Changing the duration of a clip in iMovie.  If 4 seconds was there originally and I want to extend it to 6 seconds then it will change to 8 seconds?

Try setting the frame count to less than that for a full second.

  • Problem changing clip duration

    Hello All;
I am able to increase the duration of individual clips in my timeline but for some reason, I can't decrease the duration (I get a beep and the change doesn't take place). Am I doing something wrong ?
    Thanks.
    Tim

OK I completely rebooted and it was working for a while but then started to no longer let me decrease the duration. Here are some screen shots.
The duration of these clips varies but generally about 6:15 seconds to 7 Seconds and I am trying to change all to 6:00 Seconds.
Here are two ways I tried to change the duration. I am not sure if I can upload photos here so I'm going to provide a link to my server -
    Method #1 -http://www.dedula.net/Picture%201a.png
    Method #2 -http://www.dedula.net/Picture%202a.png
When I tried method #1, I got the following error message which may be a clue to what's happening here ...http://www.dedula.net/Picture%201.png
I did not receive any feedback after hitting OK for method #2 - just a beep and it reverted to my previous duration and did not change.
    Any ideas ?

  • Can no longer access iPhoto from the iMovie camera browser..not working. Also the Inspector tool not working properly. Cannot change clip duration.

How can I fix the INSPECTOR Tool?   Clip duration is not working properly, it is very erratic.  You type a number and a different one comes up on the clip.
Suddenly the iPhoto Camera browser in iMovie is not working properly either.  Can not access my iPhotos to include them in iMovie project.

    Have you tried this?
From the "HOME" screen, go to "SETTINGS > PRIVACY > PHOTOS" and see if iMovie is listed in the "PHOTOS" page. If it is, then tap the iMovie switch to "ON"
Now your Videos & Photos should be accessible in the iMovie App.

  • IMovie 10.07 change clip duration default to less than 1s

I have 100 picture stills to put on the time line.  I want each to appear less than 1 second, say 0.2s.  I can't use the clip slider to slide to less than 1 sec.  Is it doable?  Thanks.

Try setting the frame count to less than that for a full second.

  • Using photos and after adding transitions the clip length changes

I am making a movie on imovie 11 and as I am adding transitions and music each time I add or change the clip duration changes.  I have it set at a particular time but it changes regardless.  I keep having to change durations of transitions and photo clips in order to bring it back.

    Try this...
    Click EDIT/TRANSITION OVERLAP
FULL will borrow frames from the photos to make the transition. The project gets shorter.
HALF will add frames to the transition so that the project stays the same overall length.

  • Is there a way to change the duration of a group of selected clips all at once?

    Hi all,
I'm working with good old Premiere 6 on Windows 7.
Is there a way to change the duration of a group of selected clips all at once?  If I have a large group of clips in my timeline that are all the same duration, once I've selected them all in a group, can I somehow change the frame number duration of all the clips at the same time?
I've found other things that can be done to a group of clips at the same time, but I can't find a way to change the duration of a group of selected clips.
    Thanks,
    digi

    Thanks Jim and Bill,
In my efforts to work around the problems with the distortion and horizontal interlace lines that come when using the Motion Settings, I'm doing stop frame animation with hundreds and hundreds of layers in PSDs in multiple files placed in hundreds of one, four and six frame sections in Premiere, so if I find that I need to change the number of frames per clip in hundreds of consecutive clips (not actual duration of speed changes), then I need to pull out the right side of hundreds of frames after first moving them apart enough to allow for changing them if I'm making them longer.
These animations are different from the rotating reel animations in that they are for laterally moving subjects that are long streams of moving graphics and photos.
I read about "clip nesting", but I think that only applies to clips or groups of clips that are the same, whereas my clips are each from different imported layers times 125 or so, consecutively placed one after another to create the laterally moving stop frame animation.
Now I've tried johnbmx4christ's alternate method of creating rotations that was just posted on the other thread about the rotation distortion, but that method results in the same oblong distortion and messed up looking horizontal interlace lines.
    What a can of worms.
    Thanks,
    digi

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system?
Let us assume Premiere Elements 11, 12, or 13 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit for the purpose of an example.
    1. Select all the clip on the Timeline (all at one time) that are being targeted for same duration change.
    2. Right click anywhere in the selection, select Time Stretch, and, then in the Time Stretch dialog, change the duration 00;00;0O;00. (hours; minutes; seconds; frames).
Do you have one of those versions that I mentioned, making sure to select all the involved clips ahead of time before going
    after Time Stretch?
    Selections
If you want all the clips on the Timeline, then Edit Menu/Select All
    or
Hold down the Shift key of the computer main keyboard, and, with the mouse cursor, click on each of the clips to be involved in this duration change
    or
With the mouse cursor, draw a rectangle around the clips to go into the selection in order to select them
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Changing the Duration of multiple clips/Gee I thought I knew how?!

Okay folks. I have a group of pictures on the timelime. I need to shorten the duration of all clips. I highlighted the clips, control+click on one of the clips--navigated to duration.
When I change the duration, the computer beeps and returns the time to the orginal clip length of 10:00. I can change an individual clip in this manner but not the whole timeline.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help.

Never Mind. I had a sequence in my list of clips. Took it out and that solved the problem. Sorry.
    Thanks anyway.

  • How can I change the duration for all clips in iMovie 10.2

How can I change the duration for all clips in iMovie 10.2?  I'm used to working in the older version of iMovie where all I had to do was click on the gear on the clip and change the duration. ALso could use the tool bar to set the duration for all clips. Can't figure out how to do that in this new version. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the timeline select the clip whose duration you want to change. Click the adjust button at the top of the viewer and then click the i button and you can set the duration. For multiple clips select them all and in the i button type in the duration you want and it will be applied to all the selected clips. You can also change the duration of a clip in the timeline by putting the cursor over the beginning or end of a clip and dragging. A popup will show the new duration.

  • Changing a clip duration

I've read several items explaining that the KB effect is the reason that I can't change the duration of a photo clip. Several people have given "fixes" for that but none of them work. For instance, several said to double click on the clip and unclick the KB effect - it's not there in my version. Others said double clip and change the duration - same result (although I can change the clip title nothing else can be changed). So am I left reimporting all clips and turning off the KB effect? And by the way, how do you do that? The photos start rendering the moment I import them from iPhoto or a disk.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Firstly, assuming you have iMovie HD (5) - i.e. not the latest version which is iMovie 6, these tutorials could be useful:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/tutorials/index.html
If you have iMovie 6, then look here instead:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/imovie/im2-1.html
And also you must use the iMovie Help Menu - it is very helpful!
The 'bar at the bottom of the program' into which you dragged the photos is the video track. It can be displayed in two ways, alternately displayed by clicking on the little buttons at the left just under the screen - one shows a miniature clockface (that option is the best for doing editing, but the other displays a simpler, larger version of your pics).
To change the duration of a clip depends on whether or not in the Photos Pane, the Ken Burns option is turned on or not.
If it was not on when the pics were imported, then the duration of single pics can be changed by double-clicking the photo, which opens an information pane including the duration - those numbers can be changed (the last two represent frames). To change the duration of a group of such pics, you select them all, and in the Photos Pane, adjust the slider the hit the Update button.
If the Ken Burns effect was ticked, then the only way the durations can be changed is in the Photos Pane.
The Photos Pane is the one in iMovie you were in when importing pics from iPhoto - selected by hitting the Photos button.
Note: if indeed you have the latest version of iMovie, then tell me, because the layout of and access to the Photos Pane is a little different.
