Transitions double 1st frame/drop last frame: a solution

I have found that Transitions in iMovie 5 are problematic. The first frame in a Transition doubles and the last frame drops out. This is not noticeable in a slideshow but can be very noticeable in an exported video.
Transitions cannot be edited frame by frame unless one exports video out to a camera and then imports it back into iMovie. The original clips and transitions are now seamless clips. One can delete extra frames and then find and import the missing frames from original sources. HOWEVER, this process is incredibly frustrating and time consuming.
THIS IS WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING.
To avoid the above, I thought I would add textless Titles over a few key clips and transitions where the glitching is most obvious. I had noticed that Titles longer than the clip they were inserted into, merge together the clip with its transition and following clip.
i.e.,
1. DEselect 'Over black' in the titles window.
2. Select a title format and then a length longer than the 'glitched' transition.
3. Split the clip so that the Title can be inserted.
4. Insert a TEXTLESS Title that spands the clip, transition and into the next clip.
5. Then edit out duplicate frames and insert missing frames from the the now 'single' clip.
STILL just a piecemeal. STILL labour intensive.
THIS IS WHERE IT GETS MORE INTERESTING.
I tested this on a couple of clips and, LO AND BEHOLD, 'Title-merging' a clip with its transition and following clip results in the duplicated first frame of the transition DISAPPEARING and the previously dropped frame of the transition, REAPPEARING. A fix.
One could blanket a video with long textless Titles (i.e., 45 seconds at a time with Rolling Credits) to fix the transition glitches.
I know that this is not a great solution, but it does allow me to export video with the quality I need.
Is there a better solution? (I find it ironic that years later, iMovie 2.1.2 is still, for me, the most successful of all the iMovie applications.)

the duplicated and dropped frames move to the beginning and end of the added short (4 seconds, for example) texless title. Using a longer title (10 seconds, for example) fixed also this.
if I understand your original reply correctly, it is important that the blanket transition ends in the middle of a clip and not a transition.
In my tests I used a blanket title (did you invent this descriptive word?!) that spans some of the previous clip (I split it 1-2 seconds before the transition so I could add the blanket title), the transition and some (1-2 seconds) of the next clip.
If it ends in a transition, the transition plays and then the ORIGINAL clip plays, duplicating the first part of the clip.
I didn't quite follow. I just tried this with a 30 frame transition. Then I added a 1:15 blanket title 1:00 before the transition (so the blanket title ended in the middle of the transition). Result: The first frame of the blanket titles was duplicated and the last frame of the blanket title was dropped. Otherwise it played as expected.
shift select the clips to establish a total length of the video clips and them add a title that ends just inside the last clip.
Yes, I did just that to measure how long a title was needed. In my tests it seemed that it was important that the blanket title wasn't very short (<4 seconds) because then the problem frames were just moved to affect the title. Using a longer blanket title (10 seconds) seemed to fix the problem for both the transition AND the blanket title.
<div class="jive-quote">With a textless title blanketing an entire video, my COMPRESSION TIME to Quicktime is incredibly shortened (1/3 to 1/2 the time).
That's interesting. I've noticed that simple projects (i.e. not much cuts) export faster than real time to Full Quality .dv. But complex projects take MUCH longer to export as .dv. AFAIR this didn't matter in iMovie 1-4. Maybe the blanket title simplifies the relevant parts of the project?
[sigh] I wish we didn't need to be aware of the plethora of obscure gotchas and workarounds like this. I don't expect there to be an iMovie HD 5 update anymore. I guess some bugs will be fixed and some brand new bugs will be introduced in v6.
The same thing happened with iMovie 4 bugs. ...So this time I thought to quickly gather AND report all iMovie 5 bugs to Apple so they could quickly fix them during the first months. ...but it seems that the iLife team just isn't granted enough resources to fix them. Many known old bugs are again just described in the knowledgebase articles.

  • Macbook to TV - Frame dropping

I have recently purchased a new Sony 32" LCD TV that only has supports a frame rate of 50Hz. However, this means that when I attach my macbook via a VGA cable to the TV to playback things on my Mac every few minutes the frame drops off for a few seconds and the screen goes blank saying there is no signal and then the picture reappears (the sound is not effected).
However when I then try set up the display size etc you are not give the option of a 50Hz frame rate with any screen size, the smallest it goes to is 60Hz. Is there anyway to get around this problem to stop the frame dropping off every few minutes?

rlps20, what you describe is not frame dropping. Frame dropping would not cause the screen to go blank. At worst frame dropping would look like a discontinuity in action. What you are dealing with is something else.
Do you have the newer MB with DisplayPort on it? If so, check and make sure your Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter has the latest firmware. Yes, the adapter has firmware in it. Strange but true.

  • Since 10.1.2 Drop zone cause last frame to be a still

Since 10.1.2 Update, I was trying fill a drop zone in FCPX with video from an Event and the last frame ends up showing as a still.  This happens to be with a generator that I made in Motion and I have used this Generator twice a week, the same way since last september and on multiple different macs.  It seems like every few updates, drop zones tend to work differently.  I'm Level 2 Certified and well versed in in FCPX, but I've been racking my brain!
Here are some other steps I've tried and I still have the same problem.
I've Opened a Copy of the Generator in the newest version of Motion and re-saved it, went back to FCPX and still it didn't work.
I've added the clip to timeline and tried to fill it from there, no luck.
I've made a compound clip of the original clip, both in the Event and in the project, and tried to fill it. Still no luck.
I've gotten a clip that is longer than the drop zone, no luck
I've gotten a clip that is the exact same length as the drop zone, no luck
I've gotten a clip that was shorter, and for sure, that didn't work.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I have the 10.1.2 update and everything is working fine for me... so much so that I've considered building effects with drop zones again (in general, I have hated them with a passion, until this release.)  However, for the types of bugs I've had to deal with in FCPX, especially on my 09 iMac i7 (ATI Radeon 4850) particularly after the "rewrite" for the New Mac Pro (FCPX 10.1.1) and multiple GPUs, I have the feeling that Apple hasn't quite polished the code to work on all "supported" mac platforms...  The wait was so long from the last update that I capitulated and bought the latest iMac i7 (late 2013) model and received it about a week before the 10.1.2 update. This update fixed most of the problems I was having on the older machine. (I've been wondering if it was a ploy to get a bunch of us to upgrade hardware... but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.)
If I may ask: what are the hardware specs of your system? You can reset preferences by holding down command + option when starting up FCPX 10.1.2 -- does that fix the problem? I had occasion once where a complete reinstall of FCPX solved a lot of issues I was having (IF you decide to try this method, you must first trash all preferences, and, you have to find all related .plist files and trash those too along with the application [Final Cut Pro X 10.1: How to remove and reinstall Final Cut Pro X go to the section "Removing Final Cut Pro X in OS X 10.9 Mavericks"] -- you're going for an absolutely clean install of the software. After trashing everything and before downloading, I recommend repairing permissions with Disk Utility.)
One more thing to check on before reinstalling: If you have backed up FCPX (or Motion) on an external drive (or "some other" location) -- this last time, the App Store found and replaced the backup on the external drive and did not update the version in the Applications folder. For a couple of days there, I thought I was running the current software until I started having some of my same old problems. I tried trashing the app again and the App Store would not let me upgrade - it showed the current version was installed. I think it took me over an hour to figure out that my backup had been upgraded and the App Store was seeing the external location for the install. Color me surprised. (Moral of the story, check the startup dialog to make sure you're running the version you think you are!)

  • What is the keyboard Shortcut to go to the last frame or end of a clip?

I used to have this shortcut set up, but I reformatted my mac and now I can't find it anywhere. I've searched the forums and can't find it, and yes, I looked at the help and looked at the manual. I've also went to Tools->Keyboard Layout and went through every keyboard shortcut listed. It is probably staring me right in the face!
The closest I can find is the "goto next edit".
I do a lot of photo montages and had this shortcut set up so I could double clip the photo on the timeline, set my first keyframes and then shortcut to the end of the photo and set my last keyframes so I can do my "Ken Burns" effects. I actually had set a macro on my mouse to simulate the keyboard shortcut.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

yes it is Michael, but our poster gave particular criteria where he loads a timeline instance of a clip in to the viewer and then wants to navigate to the first and last frame in the timeline instance of that clip ... which is in effect the in and the out point, hence Shift I and Shift O

  • After PreRend. - Last frame of a clip is copied into the first 2 frames o. t. following clip

    Hey Guys - Michi here,
and I am dealing with a horrible problem!
I just got rid of Premiere CS6 (Where I was dealing with the same problem) and got the new Version of Premiere. I really love it!
Heres the Problem I am dealing with:
Everytime i've finished a sequence i go to:
    Sequence -> Render Section.
Then the Rendering Window pops up and PR CC does his job.
But when replaying the prerenderes section i noticed something.
I zoomed that much into timeline so i was able to see every frame of the clip - because the play back seemed kind of OffBeat to me. And the thing that happend to every clip that was directly laying beside another clip - so there was no space between them - was, that after the PreRendering Premiere CC (and CS6 DID THE SAME) copied the last frame of the clip into the frist two frames of the following clip - so the are reeeeally tiny "still" pictures between every transitions. -> And that means, that the clip that is shown in the "Program Window" - Monitor in which you can preview the PreRenderes Video - doesn't change to the beat I've edited it on, BUT it changes 2 frames later!!
    Here are some screenshots:

    http://up.picr.de/16781445al.jpg       Pic 5
In Pic. 1 you can see, that the Marker (the red thin bar) in the Timeline is laying on the last frame of the clip on the left - the clip is called GoPro2130.MP4 (120%).
If i move the marker now over the the first frame of the clip called GoPro2130 (114.99%) the preview should change - but there is still the frame that was shown in the preview window at Pic.1
Now i moved the marker over for another frame (Pic. 3) - The same frame that is shown in Pic. 1 & 2 is still on the preview window.
NOW i moved the marker over for another frame (Pic 4 - 3rd frame of the new clip) AND NOW the clip finally changes although the clip should have changed 3 frames before..
ITS HORRIBLE!! I really dont know what to do..
Sorry for the huge text and the bad english (Student from Germany).
You guys are my last hope.
    Regards, Michi.

Thanks for your suggestion about using the clip markers.   I tried them on a test clip.   They did not come down to the timeline.  Besides, I would want them labeled.   Right now all my clips have a marker that is labeled with the date and location.   The chapter markers are labeled the same way.   I have a spread sheet that list the dates of all the Chapter Markers which connect to the dates on the menu.     This seems like an old fashion way to do things for such a sophisticated software.   Maybe I should put in a feature suggestion to Adobe.   I would do that, but I am afraid that I may embarrass myself as being the only one that ever asked for something like that.   Or they would accuse me of misusing their software.
    Again, thanks for your suggestion.

  • 2nd onwards play plays only last frame of MC within MC

    Flash CS5
    Hi,
I have an animation where a car travels across the scene then its car door opens at the end of the sequence. Other vehicles also move.
The car is a MovieClip, (car MC) in that MC’s timeline are layers for indicator lights and brake lights as it progresses across the scene, indicating right then brakes and indicates left and stops at kerbside then a keyframe at the last frame on another layer still within Car MC is for OpenLeftDoor MC where the door opens, the car interior is then visible.
    THE PROBLEM:-
The second and subsequent times Reset then Play is selected, other vehicles run ok, the car progresses across the scene so it is playing the Car MC, BUT the door is already fully open throughout the journey and the car is indicating left, so its playing the very last frame of the OpenLeftDoor MC within the Car_MC. Even the right turn indicator lights and brake lights don’t show, it plays the left turn indicators all the way through. These are the last layer to play before the OpenLeftDoor MC and occupy the same last frame. Its not displaying the layers with left indic and brakes. The indicator lights are also MC’s.
    Why ?
If I delete the layer with the door MC, it still sees car travel along with only the last MC playing,  the Indicate left one.
I have two buttons,  in properties they are gotoPlayBtn  and  gotoStopBtn
gotoStopBtn  resets the scene and the gotoPlayBtn plays the scene from fr2.
I say frame 2 as frame 1 has a stop command required for the code below so I have moved everything forward to fr2. Necessary for any MovieClips that start at Frame 1. Not Vital for background art etc.
    The code is :-
    // button navigation on timeline
    gotoPlayBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onGotoPlayClick, false, 0, true);
    gotoStopBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onGotoStopClick, false, 0, true);
    function onGotoPlayClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    gotoAndPlay("start");
    function onGotoStopClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    gotoAndStop("start");
If I go test movie it runs ok, 2nd play then the problem. Close the test window and run test movie again and 1st play is ok.
I have been given advice as an alternative to the stop command in frame 1 to try gotoAndStop(1) though in this code above I am not sure where to put this. I presume I delete the stop command from fr1 and return all animations to fr1.
Is it the code at fault ? Whats the fix ?
    Envirographics

    Thanks for your response.
Forgive me, please, but what is ide?
I guess I should retrace steps a bit.
I created an fla of my primary clip. It's actually 1428 frames.
The last frame has the action: gotoAndPlay("loop start"); (I forgot I'd changed the frame number to a label)
Frame 290 on this fla timeline has the frame label: loop start
It works as expected when exported as .swf.
When I put the primary movie .swf inside of the preloader movie clip's .fla on the third frame of the content layer, and export that .fla as an .swf, that's when I notice the actionscript of the primary movie clip is gone.
Am I right in believing you can nest .swfs and keep actions?
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • How frame drop test is executed using PQA in TestStand ?

Can someone shed some light on the frame drop test which is executed using PQA in TestStand ? Also, what is the use of reference stream and trigger in the frame drop test ?
According to the manual, the Dropped Frame processor computes the difference in pixels between consecutive frames. So, in this scenario, how does the processor compare the framedrop of the test stream with reference stream (if any).
    Thanks

    Hello Enigma123
The Dropped Frames processor returns a metric that is the average of the absolute difference between each pixel in a frame compared to its following frame.  Depending on scene transitions or a known video playback performance, you can use this processor to determine if you are missing frames.  For example, imagine two 3x3 images
    2 2 2           1 1 1
    2 2 2     &    1 1 1
    2 2 2           1 1 1
The average difference between these frames is 1.  A media reference stream is not used with this processor when it runs.  However, and I always recommend doing this for unreferenced tests, a data reference can be created from a reference stream to compare with future tests results. The data reference is a calcuated set of metrics that corresponds with a given PQA acquisition/processes or a set thereof.
Here is the process I would take for unreferenced tests.
Take a reference video that you know plays back properly.
Set that you wish to create a data reference, acquire that video/audio stream and perform and activate the desired processors.
Now, select that you would like to use that data reference for future acquisitions.
Perform new acquisitions using the same processors and observe the new results stream
You will see your results stream now centred at zero according to the following calculation  (Test Results - Reference Results) / Reference Results  [Relative Difference]
If you see any major deviations, this is a probably cause for a concern, in our case, for dropped frames

  • FCP5 removes last frame from any 23.98fps movie

I'm having an issue with 23.98fps Quicktimes in FCP. When I play the clip in Quicktime, the frame count is correct. When the same movie is opened in the FCP viewer or dropped in a bin, FCP removes the last frame. For example, say I have 2 clips, identical in every way except for frame rate:
    Clip A - 720p Photo-JPEG 120 frames 24fps
    Clip B - 720p Photo-JPEG 120 frames 23.98fps
In QT7, both clips play correctly, contain all frames, and are reported in the info window to be 5 seconds exactly. In FCP Clip A, plays correctly, contains all frames, and has a reported length of 00:00:05:00. Clip B is missing the last frame and has a reported length of 00:00:04:23.
I have done this same test with a 480 frame clip as well with the same results. QT7 reports 20 seconds, FCP reports 00:00:19:23.
I have had this problem with quicktime movies from different sources as well, not just QT movies I have created. It is imperative that I find out what is causing this issue. If anyone can offer any suggestions/answers at all, it would be much appreciated.
    PowerMac Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

    hello anthony.
i can't offer any explanation, but i can offer what might be a work around. i am assuming you need to work at 23.98 and that you are receiving exact frame count files.
if you receive files @ 24fps which are correct, try using cinema tools to "conform" these files to 23.98 ... just open the file from within cinema tools and hit the conform button. i'd be interested to know if these conformed files maintain the correct frame count.
a guess might be that the export or transcode process might be the source of the error.

  • Jpeg from external swf last frame

Hi hope someone could help me with this.
I recently descovered a program mad ein air that allows you to drag and drop a CS^ .fla file and the app will create a CS5 version of that file in the same folder.
I am trying to find a way to drag a file into a program and it generates a jepg of the last frame of the swf.
    Recon thats possible?
    Cheers Pavel

a jepg of the last frame of the swf.
Not every swf file has a "last" frame, so this is not an option in every swf-file.
Otherwise you would use a combination of making a screenshot of the swf when it reaches its last frame.
And using that Bitmap with JPGEncoder to save the screenshot to HD

  • All included(exept frame drops)

    Hi all,
since i ve been told i was in the wrong forum by some ubber poster, here i go again.
I did my 1st ever music video only using my mc book pro. (i actually forgot my external hard drive to do my normal job as a musician).
it was actually pretty fun to do both video and music only with the webcam and the built in mike of the laptop.
I only used what was in the machine, no outboard gears, goin' back and forth between I Movie and logic pro, after recording thru photo booth.
    there:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/TheDigitalwarz?feature=mhum
i still had a problem though: frame drop between i movie and logic.
(meaning i was not on the same clock lock everytime)
it costed me lots of time relocking the 'beat'.
    Any Ideas?
    Cheers

FWIW, posting in the right forum will mean that more people that are familiar with your software applications will see your post, thereby increasing your chances of getting proper advice in a timely manner.
And since you're using iMovie, you should probably post this question in the appropriate iMovie forum - they are located here: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=141
That said, if you had been using one of the Pro video apps (FCE or FCP) the answer would probably be to make sure the format, audio sampling rate and bit depth of the audio matches that of the Sequence settings. In most cases it would be AIFF, 48khz, 16 bit. However, iMovie works completely different from the Pro apps so that may not make a difference.

  • Frames dropping upon conversion to .m4v

    Hi guys!
I've scoured the discussions for help on this, but I've come up empty. I'm trying to convert some (what seems to be) HD content for viewing on Apple TV, and the resulting .mp4 or .m4v will always drop frames. The original material (in full disclosure, the free, legal downloads of "Star Trek - New Voyages" http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/) is a .mov:
    H.264, 720 x 480 (853 x 480)
    2349.09 kbits/s
    29.97 fps
When I use QTPro to convert to Apple TV, it looks great but plays jerky. The settings on the m4v:
    H.264, 853 x 480
    2827.98 kbits/s
    29.97 fps
When I try to convert to MPEG-4 ISMA, under "compatibilty", it will give me the message, "image data rate too high for MPEG-4 video simple profile level 1". Any other fiddling I do with the settings results in varying quality, files sizes and aspect ratios -- but all with jerky playback.
It seems like it's a simple answer, and I'm out of ideas. Any thoughts you guys have would be great!
    Thanks!

I am having a similar problem. I used QT Pro to convert an HD movie trailer (for "WALL-E") to watch on my Apple TV, and the resulting movie file only contained every other frame. I tried converting both the 1080 clip and the 720 clip, and stepping through each file showed that every frame was doubled up, effectively making the clip look like they're mastered at 12 fps.
I got the clips from here:
    http://bvim-qt.vitalstream.com/WallE/Vignettes/WallEVacuum1080.mov
    http://bvim-qt.vitalstream.com/WallE/Vignettes/WallEVacuum720.mov
These clips are very high bitrates, so I understand the need for conversion, but I'm hoping that frame dropping is not part of Quicktime's scheme for lowering the bitrate for Apple TV!

  • Last frame twice - what's wrong?

Hi, I have a serious issue with Quicktime atm. I have a loopable animation, but the last frame of the quicktime (tried codecs Animation codec, photo jpg, ProRes,...) is always twice, which makes the loop stutter. I tried exporting an image sequence, opened it up in Quicktime. Tried it in After Effects and in Motion, where I originally created it. Exporting directly as mov out of motion doesnt work either. And the double frame is neither in the original comp nor in the image sequence.
Please, help me. What am I doing wrong?

no one experiencing the same issue? Strange that I have it on 2 machines then (all the machines I have to test here). Normally I am used that Quicktime is very correct in stuff like that. I use the latest Quicktime version on Leopard.
Could someone please have a look as well.
    Is this a bug?

  • Blu-ray flashing up last frame when navigating

    hi people
I've got a small but rather ugly problem with a blu-ray disc i'm authoring.
When navigating to and from the main menu the last frame of the previous timeline or menu flashes up. So for example I'm watching timeline A and I hit the menu button on the remote the picture jumps to black for half a second, then flashes the last frame of timeline A for 5 frames and then proceeds to the menu. The same thing happens the other way, i'm browsing a menu and when I activate a button the screen jumps to black, then flashes up the menu again for 5 frames then starts playing the selected timeline.
The navigation works but the experience is super clumsy. Is there any way to smooth this transition. I don't mind the jumps, I just don't want the secondary flash of the last frame.
I should add that these are static menus with only a couple of buttons and very simple navigation. Playing on a Sony player, Sony burner, authored using Encore on a Mac.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    cheers../daniel

    Hi,
I'm quite sure that Encore is doing some "quirks" with BlueRay.
I have everytime a 2/3 second freezing time when Buttons appears after looping time.
Probably due to bit differences that various BR player have. (I have a Sony).
I'm also quite sure you'll not have this problem if you burn a DVD (as I did and noticed).
Sorry, no ideas to help you but please post solutions in case you'll get.
    Ciao
    Giorgio

  • Keep last frame of a clip until the next clip in the timeline?

Is there an easy method to keep displaying the last frame of a clip until the next clip shows up in the timeline. I do not want black video in between.
    Video demo:
    http://www.bartelsmedia.com/vid/tmp_premiere_question2.swf
I know that one can mess around with the playback speed of a clip but this makes it hard to exactly hit the beginning of the next clip.
    Any ideas?
    Ciao, Gunnar

Yeah, Hunt. Frame hold certainly has room for improvement. It also suffers from the auto-deinterlacing bug wherein the held frame is (often?) deinterlaced whether you've ticked "deinterlace" or not, so it is totally unusable for me.
The workaround of exporting .BMPs is wretched also, as this forces a YUV->RGB conversion (for DV, HDV, etc.) that clamps the color range.
I don't like the rate changing method either, as there is a risk of inaccuracy -- especially if you need to tweak the ins/outs afterwards.
When I know I need to do lots of frame holds (such as with instructional animation, screen captures, etc.) I make sure I build in at least an extra second of no-mo where I plan to hold the frame. Then I copy/paste 1 second clips to fill the time. This sucks also, but it is the only way I have found around the other methods' limitations.
My PPro "frame hold fantasy vision" (based on my hazy recollection of my old NLE ca. 1993) is something like: Right-click, choose "Frame Hold at CTI" -- which would automatically set Marker 0 at the CTI, frame hold at Marker 0, and then allow you to infinitely pull the ends of the clip. The overextended regions should be indicated with grey diagonals on the clip in the timeline, just like when transitions run out of frames or nested sequences get shortened, etc.
