Transitions slow on some clips

I am having a problem with slow transitions on some clips.
Seems like on a clip I bring in from my Sony HVR-A1U it is fine.
But on clips I have converted from 8mm film to MiniDV then pulled in from the same camera they are like 10 times slower.
Can anyone tell me why?
And is there a fix for this?

a clear discription of the problem sometimes help to find an answer..
so, you do mean, that little red bar in the clip, indicating the 'rendering' of an effect, moves signficant slower...?
usually, all these process makes widely use of socalled temp-files, whcih are located onto the internal drive (or, that part of your HDD, where your System is located, if you partioned the drive...)
if you go under 10 - 20 GB of free disk space, iM slows down 'til freeze...
to speed up all processes, be sure, your Mac can 'breath'... ;))

Can't "Apply" Fast/Slow/Reverse on some clips

I have some clips in my timeline that I cannot change the speed on. This typically happens with a clip that I already edited in some way. Particularly when I have already altered the playback speed on it before. When I try to do this now, the Apply button is grey and won't respond.
Anyone know how come? Thanks

I have a somewhat similar problem. For a while now, I haven't been able to apply any Fast/Slow/Reverse effects at all. I can select the effect, and even preview it in the main window, and when I click apply it even takes a little while and shows a progress bar while it "renders" the effect. But when it's done, I'm left with a clip with no thumbnail (in the timeline) that, when played, just plays what was there already, but since it extends the length of the clip in the timeline, the whole rest of the timeline is off from what the movie actually is.
I'm using iMovie HD 5.02
Anybody run into this before, or have any ideas?

Some Clips Stop Playing in Timeline - only fix restart PP

Hi there - thanks for looking at this. First a few details about my setup:
I'm using an i5 10gig Ram PC running WIndows 7 with an Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 GPU which seems to be supported now (thanks to recent help on here) and Premiere says it's using 'Mercury Playback Mide with GPU Acceleration' .
My footage is 25fps HD. The files are Quicktime MPeg-4 .MOV and the codec is AVC1 according to GSPOT - which also says it's an h.264 file.
I should also add this project has been used in two different versions of Premiere - It was created in CS5.5 and I've since switched to the latest CC from Adobe Cloud. Currently I'm running CC 2014.2 Release; 8.2.0 (65) Build.
I created my sequence using the CS5.5 function 'New Sequence From Clip'. Premiere CC is using 'ARRI Cinema' Editing Mode. It also calls the footage an MPEG Move in the preoperties box.
THE ISSUE: I have been editing a music video in Premiere for some time. However I'm experiencing increasing problems with footage playing fine upon loading but after a small amount of editing some clips just refuse to play on the sequence timeline - with the effect of giving a frozen image of the previous clip until Premiere recovers and it carries on playing as normal. Or sometimes there will be a green screen in the clip's place.
Also the footage is often laggy and slow and I'll need to stop and rewind a section for it to play smoothly. Generally I'd say things felt a lot more stable and predictable in CS5.5 when I first started work on the project. But gradually, as time has gone on, things have got more buggy! In addition, upon installing Red Giant Universe, the plugins were so slow it prompted me to switch to CC, believing this would sort everything out. It didn't.
Red Giant plugins are now faster, for sure, but the clip playback problems I've described are getting more and more regular until now I can't edit for longer than 10mins before needing to restart Premiere. It's a total pain.
It's often the same collection of clips that exhibit the problems.
Also some clips have glitches and flashes when played back which aren't present in the original footage - and these are always there whether I restart the program or not.
I don't know what to do really. I really need some advice.
Also advice about whether it's a good idea to continue to edit from compressed footage while applying effects etc. would be really helpful too.

Have you tried a new project and importing the old one into?
Red Giant plugins are notorious for slow edit, mine always need to be rendered.
mov should edit just fine

Why can't some clips fast forward?

I am on my first ever imovie project for school. I need to fast forward some of the clips so that my video can fit into the stipulated duration. Some clips can fast forward whitest others can't. Those that can't fast forward can however respond to slow motion. What is the reason and how can the problem be solved?

I am unable to adjust playback speed as well. The options for modifying 2x, 4x, 8x, and 20x are not highlighted to click on. The fast foward section under modify is highlighted.

Problem with transition only affecting one clip.

I'm trying to use the dip to black transition to blend two clips together.
It is giving me fits in that it only wants to apply it to one side of the clip. This means that instead of dissolving or fading to black it jerks to black and then fades back it. See my screen shots for what I mean.
I'd really appreciate any help.
You can see in the pictures that first one spans over the two clips, but for some unknown reason the transition only wants to affect the second clip.

Here is a bit more info on Handles:
Also, as you note, Dip-to-Black WILL affect Clips below.
Another reason for it applying to only one Clip, even with proper Handles, is if the Clips are NOT butted-up to each other. A one Frame gap will give the results that you describe - check for any gaps, if you have the Handles.

Thanks for your response. I am not an experienced user of FC or other video editing software but if its that hit and miss I think I will go to the trouble of finding some better software - I have a busy enough life as is, I don;t want to get into second guessing what a software problem might be!
I have just successfully exported my video to a master file using one of the Apple codec options so it looks like it could be to do with the H.264 codec. I am wondering if Apples Compressor software would solve this problem - the only way to try this it to buy it, there is not trial for the compressor app. Any ideas?

Can you do slow motion with in a clip? I know you can speed up or slow down entire clips but I want to add a slow motion inside of a clip. make sense?

• change speed on this ( BUT ONLY TO one of the preset values ! )
• Export/Share this as full Quality QuickTime movie
• Import this clip into Your MAIN MOVIE project.
Be aware of some known problems with speed
• By not using the pre-set values - USUALLY the Audio goes all wrong !

Can't add Transitions b/w LiveType clips in FCE

I'm making small promo movie in FCE, with a lot of LiveType clips interspersed with some movie clips (Apple Interm. Codec--but I've also tried using DV-NTSC). My problem: when I've strung together several LT clips (.ipr--but also .mov after rendering) I can't add transitions b/w them in FCE (and can't add trans. b/w a LT and movie clip). I get msg: "insufficient content for edit."
I don't understand well the whole codec process. I've read here that the properties need to be the same b/w LT and FCE, but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. The property options in both programs have slightly different presets and I've tried to match the codec & aspect ratios etc. as best I can. Since I don't know what I'm doing in this area, I've tried to match things up as best as possible, yet no luck.
BUT, even when I've opened a brand new project in FCE, brought in several .ipr clips (w/out bringing in any movie clips), I still can't add transitions b/w .ipr clips (or LT .mov files).
Help! What am I doing wrong?

OKay, but how do i do it..
I have 2 movies...I want a transition of 2 seconds..do i Mark in from the point of the first movie where i want to have the transition to start ? And out in the 2nd movie where i want it to finished (maximum) ?
Or do i mark out on the first movie and mark in on the 2nd movie ?
The whole day i am trying things but nothing works for me.
I even did see a video tut that says it's because the videos are not NTSC...But they are HD so that wouldn make a problem ? Or does it ?
Sorry for these simple questions but there is no tut in my language and i can't find a forum that explains it in dutch..

Some Clips in Projects and Events are Grayed Out

I've been using iMovie for a while with the same camera, and it's always worked fine. However, the last time I went to import some clips from my camera, they went into the event folder, but then every clip - including the new ones - that had worked before turned gray. Now, I can't watch any of the clips in the project or events. This is very frustrating because everything worked fine, but now nothing works. If there's a way I can fix this so the clips will actually play, it would be very much appreciated.

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
     after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
     Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
     Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

hello imovie guru's I need some help with my quandry, when I do open a project I've been working on for quite some time now, it tells me there are some clips in the trash would I like to view, or not? Of course I say yes, because when I say no, there is no film left, but they're the clips I want/need. so is there a way to get them back into the original movie? I'm afraid I've emptied the trash in the iMovie by accident? thinking I could just grab them and move 'em back in manually. can I recover these clips without having to go back and start over with the whole project again. thanks for your support ahead of time. VHS conversions from my 1st. band 30 odd yrs. ago. geeky looking cats, but fun to watch and be able to convert to dvd finally for the other boys/men now in the band. who'll be astonished I've kept them all these years. HELP!!! But these classic old videos are great for critic-ing my progress thru the yrs. which backs up my theory of "less is more", especially when making music. 1. you can copy and paste between projects. So, in project A, select what you want to reuse and use the copy command (command-c). Go to project B, place the playhead to where you want your clips to be, and paste (command-v).

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos. I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

Effects and key-frames not working on some clips Premiere CC 2014

Hi. I am having an issue where effects and key frames applied to both audio and video are not working, but only sometimes. Even after I render or export the video, the effects are not showing up. For example, trying to adjust volume using key-frames on some clips works fine, and not at all on others. The key-frames show up and I can see the volume changing in the effects panel, but it is not happening. Another example is changing the opacity on some video clips and it does not work sometimes. Same thing, I can see the key-frames and the values changing, but it's not actually happening. I have uninstalled and re-installed premiere pro and media encoder with no luck. I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest Nvidia drivers with no luck. Just to restate, this only happens on some clips and rendering or exporting the video does not help. My computer specs are:
MSI GT60 Laptop:
Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz)
16GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 8GB
2880 x 1620 16:9 3K Display

Here is the exact screenshot. Now I'm also trying other effects as stated in my original post. But this effect is just an example. Is there really something that I'm doing wrong here? Or am I forgetting something? Is there some special "adobe doesn't let keyframes work on mpg's" rule or something silly like that?
I wish that I could post a video, but I don't know how.
Please let me know what I need to do to make this work properly.
