Translate Microsoft Works 3.0 into OS 10.5.5

Help me if you can. I wrote a book on my old Apple II computer on Microsoft Works 3.0. Is there a program I can use to recreate my book without retyping it onto my newly purchased Mac Book Pro OS 10.5.5? Peace and Love.

There seems to be a lot of "opinion".
As usual, Limnos and Appaloosa have hit it right on the nail,
MacLink Plus:

Or, ask for help at your local MUG, if you're in CA, you'll have no shortage of guys with the required kit only too willing to help - they love the challenge.
Also for info, although you can't run it on your new MBP, the old Write Now software used to have an excellent Microsoft Works importer. I used WN at university because my department didn't want to spend on Word, and MacWrite was awful on documents of more than 15 pages (not helped by a room full of overheating Mac 128k and 512k).
Funny, we muse about "back in the day" but it really was slow hard work, I still have my SE, it's painfully slow and so much stuff we take for granted now was just never going to work back then. AppleScript ? hah! not before System 7.5. Printer sharing ? (not network printer) not before OS9. No Quicktime, no colour, no user accounts, and waiting months for Apple kit - I waited over 6 months for my CD300e, and when I ordered a Mac II, it was "Get me a IIsi or IIci, any RAM, any disk" just to help reduce the wait from 4 months to 9 weeks, cost me more than my Mac Pro even with Edu discount. Plus £600 for the 13" monitor, £220 for the keyboard. And the 64MB RAM upgrade a year later was over £2000 alone. It was never "great" back in the day.

  • Translating Microsoft Works 4.5 Database Files to Appleworks 6 format

    Hi,
Having recently moved to Mac from Windows I am trying to transfer files from my old machine to my Mac mini. As I have thousands of files in Window format that I hope to use on my Mac I spent the money to purchase a copy of MacLinkPlus V. 15.
Happily when I attempted to translate word processing files created in Word 97 to Appleworks 6.2.9 all went well. But when I attempted to translate database files created in Microsoft Works 4.5 I ran into trouble!
To whit, after "adding" the MS Works database file to MacLink Plus I click on translate but when the translation settings window open there is no AppleWorks 6 database file format to select. I tried selecting AppleWorks 2.1, 3.0 but after the translation is done there is just a bunch of disorganized text in the destination file.
Given that the program claims to support MS Works 4.5 I was at a loss as to why this was happening so I contacted the MacLinkPlus help desk to find out what I should do. Initially they said that MacLinkPlus does not support Microsoft Works 4.5 file translation. But when I checked the link they supplied to supported formats Microsoft Works 4.5 database files were clearly shown as being fully supported.
When I pointed this out to them they next asked if I was sure I had Appleworks on my computer..... What can one say to a question like that, especially when it is asked in broken English?
Does anyone out there have any idea what is going on here? Is there a way to get MacLinkPlus to do what the company says it will do, i.e. translate my Microsoft Works database files to Appleworks 6 format? If not, what would folks suggest as a work around method of getting these database files into the Appleworks 6 database?
    Thanks,
    Winston
PS For anyone interested in the quality of support at MacLinkPlus I offer the following message I recieved from their Help Desk:
"MacLinkPlus only support AppleWorks 6 for word processing or spreadsheet files. Because you are dealing with a database file you are only able to choose from those formats. To see the full list of file formats that MacLinkPlus supports, please view this page:"
    http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/mlp_xlators.html
Note: When I clicked on the above link this is what I found:
    DOS and Windows Database Formats
    ClarisWorks 1.0, 3.x, 4.0
    Comma Separated Values (Write only)
    dBase (DBF) II, III, IV
    FoxBASE/FoxPro
    MS Works for Windows 2.0, 3.0, 4.5, 95
    Tab Text (Write only)
    WordPerfect Works 2.0

Thanks for the tips I guess that I will try to export the database files in tab delimited format and paste them into a database that I create in Appleworks 6. I can't say that I am looking forward to this, but it would appear I have no choice.
At this point in time I would have to say that my foray into the Mac World has been a most unpleasant experience. In truth when you add this difficulty to the many others I've had with my Mac I have had more computer problems in the past 3 months than in the prior 8 years with Windows.
By the way, I heard back from MacLinkPlus today and they had this to say:
    Hi Winston,
The reason you don't have AppleWorks 6 listed as an option in MacLinkPlus, is because when it comes to Databases, MaclinkPlus only supports these formats:
    AppleWorks 5.0
    AppleWorks 6.0 (Read Only)
    ClarisWorks 1.0, 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0
    Excel 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 98, 2001, X, 2004
    MS Works 2.0, 3.0, 4.0
    SYLK (Read Only)
    AppleWorks (Apple II) 2.1, 3.0
So, it is not going to give you AppleWorks 6 as an option because when Dealing with Database files, AppleWorks 6 isnot supported.
So what you can do, is choose either AppleWorks 2 or 3, convert the file.
Then try to use AppleWorks 6 to open it with.
AppleWorks 6 may not recognize such an old file though.
    Here is my reply:
    Dear Annya,
I must admit that I am still confused regarding all this. In your most recent e-mail you say that MacLinkPlus does not recognise Microsoft Works 4.5 database files but on your website it says that it does.
I tried your work around and Appleworks 6 refused to open the database file translated into Appleworks 2, 3 so it would now appear that I am not going to be able to use MacLinkPlus to translate the files.
While your offer for a refund on the MacLinkPlus was appreciated, I am out a great deal more than the purchase price of MacLinkPlus because of this. Simply put I would never have purchased my Mac mini computer in the first place if my visit to your website had not left me confident that your software would allow me access to my old database files.
To say that I am dissappointed would be quite an understatement and I certainly hope that your company rewrites the material on its own website in an effort to make clear that MacLinkPlus can not translate Microsoft Works database files.
In the mean time, know anybody looking for an almost brand new MacIntosh computer?
    With regrets,
    Winston

  • Using Firefox I cannot cut and paste from an email to Microsoft Works 9. I can if using Explorer.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my internet browser, and yahoo for email. I have a dell Inspiron with Microsoft Works 9 preinstalled. About 90% of the time, if I copy text from an email and then try to paste it into a word processor document using Microsoft Works 9, Works shuts down. The notice says "a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify if a solution is available." The program however never closes and I never receive any notifications from windows. I have to manually close the program. This problem dose not exist if I use Explorer for my browser and yahoo for email.

    Hi there,
Wow, that sounds very odd indeed! What happens if you press Ctrl+N on your keyboard? Normally you should see a new Firefox window. If nothing happens when you do that, something is definitely wrong with your Firefox.
My advice would be to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if the problem exists there as well. This article has all the details: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
If all else fails, here's a method that will almost surely fix the issue: [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]
Let me know if any of this helps or if you need more assistance.
    Thanks!

  • How do I Translation Route a call back into CVP?

This is ICM 8.5, CVP 8.5 and Avaya CM 5.2.  I'm trying to configure the system to be able to Translation Route a call back into CVP that originally started in CVP.  I've read and read Cisco documentation that talk about various ways it can be done but I think I really need step-by-step instructions to figure out what I've done wrong.  I'm happy to explain it in gory details if anyone wants to help me troubleshoot.  However, I think it would be simpler if someone can point me to a document that outlines a successful configuration and I can find my own mistake.

Thanks clearbluelou, some of this was very helpful, but I had to set my translation routes up differently. Kris Lambrecht's post was very helpful, but also introduced some confusion, which looking back was very simple...hindsight is always that way right?!?!
I am going to list out the configurations I used to make this work, most of which are what's listed in the Type
8 setup in Kris's post starting with Step 7 except its for a Type 10 Network VRU; you don't use Type 8 anywhere, but the configuration is very similar.
Assumption is that you already have an existing system and are routing calls to CVP already so a lot of the steps in the config guide are already done.
References below are to "Configuration and Administration Guide for Cisco Unified Customer Voice Portal Release 8.5(1)" starting on page 109, step 7:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/customer_voice_portal/cvp8_5/configuration/guide/ConfigAdminGuide_8.5.pdf
Here's the details of my implementation:
    ICM 7.2.7
    CVP H323, Type 10
Avaya PBX connected with a PG also running CTIOS
Destination is the CVP Servers/CVP PGs (PG1), call transfer is originating from an Avaya PBX connected to ICM via a PG/CTIOS server (PG2).
    1. Build a new Service under destination PG, CVP in this case, as outlined in Step 7 from the CVP Config Guide.
    - Service
    Peripheral Number: 2
    Peripheral Name: Pre_Route
    Name: CVP_PG1.Pre_Route
    - Route
    Name: CVP_PG1.Pre_Route
    -Peripheral Target
    Not required
    Labels
    Not Required
    2. Build Network Trunk Groups, as outlined in Step 8 from the CVP Config Guide:
    - Network Trunk Group
    Name: CVP1_NTG
    Peripheral: CVP_PG1
    PeripheralNumber: 200
    PeripheralName: CVP1_NTG
    Name: CVP_PG1.CVP_NTG
    Trunk Count: Use Trunk Data
    3. Build Translation Routes using the TransRoute wizard, I built a pool of 10 DNIS 1000-1010; these are dummy DNIS; outlined in Step 9 from CVP Config Guide; here's what they should look like in
    the TransRoute explorer when finished:
    -Translation Route
    Name: TR2CVP1
    Type: DNIS
    -Route
    Name: CVP1.1 - CVP1.10
    Service Name: CVP_PG1.Pre_Route
    -Peripheral Target
    DNIS's: 1000-1010
    NTG: CVP1_NTG
    -Label
    Routing Client: PBX_PG2
    Labels: 1000-1010
    Label Type: Normal
    Customer: None
    4. Configure Trans Route DNs 1000-1010:
    - Have to be built on the Avaya pointed to a VOIP gateway with Session Target equal to the CVP Call Server (or GK).
    - Add Translation Route DNISs in CVP Call Server Configuration under ICM Tab.
!!!Make sure you "Save and Deploy"!!!---->If you don't calls will show up on the ICM as new calls on the Translation
Route DNIS's under your CVP Peripheral.
    5. Build Dialed Numbers in ICM:
-Extension 2000 is the dialed number Agents on the Avaya transfer to.
-VDN 2000 on Avaya PBX should be routed to an Adjunct Route step which will send a route request to PG2 and kick off a script in ICM.
-You have to build a dialed number in ICM Dialed Number Explorer under the PBX peripheral (PG2 in my example) PG2.2000, and point it to a CallType and subsequently a script, for example "Avaya2CVP".
    6. Build your ICM Call Routing Script: (follow's ClearBlueLou's description)
    - Route the call through typical CVP call setup initialization nodes
-Route to Trans Route to VRU node with "CVP_PG1.Pre_Route" as the service selected, and "TR2CVP1" Trans Routes
    selected.
    -Then send to a microapp.
Your test call should have exited the success connection of the TrasRoute to VRU node and will continue routing with all call variable information will route (and show up in TCDs and RCDs) under Dialed Number PG2.2000.

  • Importing Spreadsheets from Microsoft Works

Is there any way to import Microsoft Works spreadsheets into AppleWorks? The file extension of the files I'm trying to import is .wks. I'd rather not have to recreate these sheets if at all possible. The files were created on an old Dell PC several years ago. The Dell is gone (still doing the happy dance over that!)...
When I look for them under the "file, open" command the file names of the desired files are greyed out. If I attempt to open them using Finder and double clicking, Finder tells me that the file is not supported.
I have MS Office installed on my Mac, but unfortunately I get much the same result there.
Thanks for any assistance you can give...

Remove any paper from the paper tray.
Load the envelope into the middle of the paper tray, print side down, and with the flap on the left and facing up.
NOTE: You can load one or more envelopes in the tray, but do not load more than five envelopes at a time. Do not use shiny or embossed envelopes or envelopes that have clasps or windows.
    Load the envelope
Slide in the paper width guides until they rest against the edges of the envelope.
Slide in the paper width guides
Push the paper tray forward until it clicks into place.

  • Why does clipboard from FF shut down Microsoft Works?

Any idea why clipboard contents copied from a web page in Firefox, would not paste into Microsoft Works? I can paste to Notepad or Wordpad, but if I try to paste to Microsoft Works, the Microsoft program shuts down every time. I can, however, paste from IE to Microsoft Works, so it seems to be a Firefox setting somewhere, but I can't figure out where.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I first downloaded Firefox

Use "Edit > Paste Special" in MS Works.

  • Transfer my address book from Microsoft Works to Thunderbird

I want to transfer my address book from Microsoft Works on my computer to Thunderbird. I found Outlook Express much easier to deal with, but I do like Firefox.

    What version do you have?
You know that to add a addon you
first download with firefox and save it somewhere
    Then open addons in TB,
Click on the cogwheel and choose ''Install Add-on from file''
    locate your downloaded file
    and install.
I think I jumped a step. You have to EXPORT in csv using outlook's own tools.
and then IMPORT into TB using MoreFunctionsForAddressBook

  • Recovering material from Microsoft Works files.

I created several documents using Microsoft Works on an older Windows XP PC. They were saved on a zip drive. I opened those files on my new iMac, and it recognized that they were not in any program that my Mac had, so it used some kind of program or option to recover the words from the Works files. They were somewhat out of order, but for the most part, what I had typed was still there, and all I had to do was copy and paste and edit into Microsoft Word for Mac. But, I've recently tried again to get the rest of the material that I had not copied and pasted, and now my Mac won't do the magic it did before. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi jon28127: You might want to try an office suite called NeoOffice. It lists MS Works files as one of its file types. You can then save the files as another file type. It is free and available here: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/download.php#download
    Hope this helps

  • Problem Installing Microsoft Works  4.0 c

My internal hard drive crashed (died) with all of my applications (programs) on it. I have successfully installed back all of my applications from the original program disks with the exception of Microsoft Works Vers. 4.0c. Works will not install the original software back on my HD even though I have the original Works program installation disks. I get the following error messages when I try to run the Installer program on the Works program floppies. 1st error message: Microsoft setup was not completed successfully. 2nd error message: Setup was unable to locate a valid setup table file and cannot proceed without one.
When the crash occurred I had my system folder running OS 9.1 on my other Internal HD so I did not have any startup issues, etc. (thankfully)
I have a gut feeling that because I still have some Works files in my system folder they may be causing the setup program from running properly.
I am hoping someone knows a work around to help me get Works installed back on my HD.

    Jan.
I doubt that I have any problems with the install disks, I copied the 68K Vers. of the Microsoft install disk just as you had explained using disk copy 4.2------------it copied perfectly and when I tried to use the copy I got the same errors as I mentioned in my original post. I did not do the checksums as you had mentioned because the disk and the backup I made are working perfectly. I have not gotten any kind of error code that would be linked to a problem with the disks. My floppy disk drive has never caused me a problem in the past so I have no reason so suspect the floppy drive as being the issue.
I think the Micosoft Works error messages hold the key to the problem. Especially the error that says "setup was unable to locate a valid setup table file and cannot proceed without one", if I only knew what a valid setup table file was I might be able to dig deeper into the issue!!
I also ran Disk Warrior from the Disk Warrior CD to check out my Hard Drive, Warrior found some issues with my Hard Drive which it fixed--------I then tried the Works install disk again after fixing the errors with Warrior but had the same errors. ????????
Thanks for your input but we are still out in the woods!

  • Is it possible to convert a Mac (Pages) document to Microsoft Works

I was wandering if it's possible to convert a Mac (Pages) document to Microsoft Works? Our main computer that we use is our Mac Desktop Computer but I have an HP laptop (which I'm about to throw out the window) that I sometimes use when I'm working on a project and I get tired of sitting in front of the desktop. My HP laptop has Microsoft works. If converting from Pages to Microsoft Works is possible please let me know how this can be done?

    File > Export
Type Export into the help search field and it will highlight the menu for you.
This works for other menu options too.

  • Why am I not able to cut and paste to Microsoft Works anymore?

While using Internet Explorer I was able to copy off the internet and paste into my Microsoft Works word processing. I can no longer do that with Mozilla. I keep getting the answer "it exceeds the size limit" even if it's only one word.

You should be able to view both PDFs and Powerpoint attachments by tapping on them to download them and then open them. Without a separate app you can't then save them on the iPad, but you should be able to open and the read both of them in the Mail app.

  • HT2518 How can I work with Microsoft Works files on a Mac?

I recently bought a Macbook Air (my first Mac) so everything is new to me.  I have spreadsheets and a few MS Works documents that I would like to access.  Would Pages/Numbers access these docs?  Thanks!

Works Document Viewer for the Mac can convert Microsoft Works for Windows documents. It cost a couple of bucks, but it's dead simple to use, and really, really fast. It's not an editor, though, and you'll lose some formatting in the process. Still, if you want to get the text out of your MSWorks document and into a Mac word processor (I prefer Pages), it's worth a look.
