Translating Lightroom color correcting to Final Cut pro...

Hi all,
My director friend has seen me color correct images in LR with grace and skill, and wants me to start doing color correction for his films. I have never used Final Cut Pro before, and wondered if the controls in Final Cut were similar to LR, if you could export and import between the two, and generally what the difference was between working with color in each. He has one of the RED cameras, which shoots in RAW, so I assume the different can't be too great. If anyone's proficient in both, the lowdown would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

If he shoots with RED, why isn't he using RED's copy of Lightroom that's specifically for their cameras, and is provided free?  It's called RedCineX, I think.

  • Hand shake correction in Final Cut Pro 10.1.1

I see that there is this option available in iMovie but was wondering whether its there in Final Cut Pro 10.1.1.  I have a number of clips that I would like to use in my project but they are rather shaky.  Is there any way to correct them within the application itself or do I have to go through iMovie first?
    Thanking you,

The standard setting for Stabilize works pretty well but there are a few options that are user selectable.

  • Color Correction in Final Cut Express HD

I'm editing a stage production of A Midsummer Nights Dream that was shot on two different cameras. The set is very bright and vivid, and i have read and re-read the FCE Help page on the color correction topic. I have corrected my master shots (wides). What i want to know is how i can adjust the colors of my close-ups:
    1. the subject (Bottom in this case) is lit in a blue light (moon light).
    2. the set (the woods) are lit by a bright green light.
What I want to do is match the colors to the master, but if i adjust to match the blue light on Bottom, the background loses its bright green. Likewise, if i try and make the green brighter to match the master shot, Bottom turns green too.
The help file mentions Limit Effect, but doesn't expand on it. Bear in mind i'm an 18 year old student, i pretty much need to be spoon-fed a solution!
Any help would be very very gratefully recieved, as i'm a bit pushed for time and trying to finish it this weekend (A-levels are looming...)
    Thanks in advance,
    James.

Limit effect is not going to help you in this case. You really need to control the overall image and get a balance between the wide and the CU. Color match Bottom's skin tone so it appears correct to you. Leave some of the blue cast to not lose the moonlight effect. Then color match the wide shot so that it has the same look as the corrected CU.

  • Color Correcting in Final Cut general question

I am finding I'm at the end of a long process with my feature film and I'm preparing to output and yet again I've run up against a wall of my ignorance...
    1. It's a dv film I don't want to just output the film and then apply a color correct as I'm afraid of a lot of clipping...so I'm doing the individual clips through the film and I'm finding a lot of them I have to limit the rgb to 90 some go as low as 88, some are just fine at 100 or 97...it was shot on the dvx100 and I looked up the dvx and see it is geared for superwhite...but I want to prepare my film for broadcast...I wonder though if this is why I'm getting a lot that I have to limit the rgb to 90??? I wouldn't have known to tell the DP please don't use the superwhite settings.
So am I doing this right?
After I output the whole thing, do I color correct the quicktime again when I letterbox it (it's 720x480 to be letterboxed to 1:85:1) before encoding it for the mpeg2? Or if I'm doing it this way is it not necessary?
    Thank you

Also is it stupid to do this when I already went through the film and applied color correction as what is bothering me is a lot of the color correct with the range check shows that little arrow that shows it's on the edge...those are the clips I'm bringing down to code because a lot of them the rgb is too hot...for just preparing a professional dv is it necessary to do what I'm doing?
I really want to prepare it once and not do different color corrects again so if what I'm doing above is correct for broadcast quality though it's going to look more muted on a dvd but maybe that's my confusion as many of the bright hilights giving it that look are on the verge or are clipped.

  • Finishing using final cut pro X

    Friends,
Whats your opinion of finishing a project (propably a feature film) using final cut pro X?
Do Final Cut Pro X allows till that extend Apple Color supported as a finishing tool?
Is tracking possible with final Cut Pro X?
If so what are the 3rd part video cards which are best for final Cut Pro X?
I've been using Apple color with Euphonix Color Control surface & Ajaj Kona 3G since an year.
Is Final Cut Pro X designed like a finishing tool?
Do you think in the future upgrades drastic changes will happen to the "COLOR PART OF FINAL CUT PRO X"?

That's a very subjective question and depends how far you want to take it. X has a certain level of color grading built in, and then you can extend this with plugins like Magic Bullet. And you have the ability to monitor on broadcast gear from AJA, Blackmagic and Matrox. Finally if you wanted to take things further you can use XML exchange to go into DaVinci Resolve which is as good as it gets software-wise.

  • Fonts display wrong in Final Cut Pro

One of the other editors in the office put together this piece and now I am making some changes to it on my machine. We're using the font "Baskerville" a common font that comes on the computer, and it is showing up correctly in the Font Book, but it is not showing up correctly in Final Cut Pro.
There should be other options like regular, bold, semiBold etc, but there's only bold, italic, and bold italic.
The other strange part is that when I first opened it on my computer it displayed wrong, and I tried reinstalling the fonts, and then it worked fine. I tried reinstalling the font again but it didn't help. I also tried restarting and that didn't help either. I checked in the Library > Fonts folder as well as the fonts folder under my user and the fonts match.
Any suggestions as to what I could do?

As far as I remember, Final Cut has always had this issue....
I believe it has something to do with Final Cut only reading True Type (not Post script) fonts.
That's why I only use Text for simple things like legals. For all other text uses, I use Photoshop...

  • Final cut pro 10.1.2 Update - Color Correction / Grading Not Exporting

    Hi guys
Since upgrading to Final Cut Pro 10.1.2, the software is working almost perfectly fine, but when exporting movies - whether I export them as h264, iTunes or directly to YouTube - they do not export with the colour corrections I applied to different shots. Does anyone know a way around this?
Best wishes and I look forward to hearing from you.
    Shai

    Thanks Tom
Here's a screenshot of what the Quicktime file looks like compared to the fcp movie. There are a couple of shots where the color correction stays intact, but for the majority, the export seems to ignore it completely. Very strange.

  • Export a Final Cut Pro XML file problem about translation issue

When I export the final cut pro xml file, there is always translation issue like that 'Transition <....> not translated, Cross Dissolve used instead.'
Most of the transition type can cause the translation issues except the wipe and cross dissolve.
Is there any body knowing the reason? Is that OK?
By the way , I am using the trial version of cs5

    Hey Ani_,
I've been working with Adobe products for a long time and typically when you come across an error that has anything to do with a XML file export problem its due to things such as effects you may have added in, color corrections, cross fades or any type of video transitions between clips. Remember your work flow should be
Import your footage into Premiere Pro
Name your clips (helps find things later on)
Place clips on time line in the order you wish (ONLY MAKE CUTS don't add anything, transitions color effects nothing)
Then once your clips are all placed on the timeline in your correct order you then EXPORT> Final Cut Pro XML
Now you can bring this into other programs for color grading or whatever else your going to do.  You will notice you have no errors on the export.
Once your done doing what your doing to the clips in another program (for example: Divinci Resolve color grading) you can then export them back to your main project then add your effects and transitions.

  • Send to Final Cut Pro in Color off an external Hard Drive, causes Color to Crash

Okay, so I'm having some Color issues guys...
I'm color correcting a feature right now, and just completed the CC with Color. I did the entire color correct on an internal hard drive on a Mac Pro. My client wanted to take a look at the CC on a different machine, so I transferred all of the FCP files, Color Projects, footage, etc. (the ENTIRE directory from my machine) onto an external hard drive....
...When I opened the color project from the external drive on his machine, all of my media was gone, so of course I reconnected the media (directly from the source, the same source files I edited with in FCP), and everything was fine. My grades were there, and everything looked great....
....I rendered my Color sequence and tried to Send To Final Cut Pro, and color crashed on me. It continued to do this....
....I went back to my machine and tried to Send To Final Cut Pro, and everything worked just fine. What went wrong with the data transfer? Is that the reason Color keeps crashing? Is it because I relinked the footage in Color to the original source files? It doesn't make sense to me. All of the data from the original drive was moved to an external and relinked.
I'm pretty new to Color so any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
    -Chris

Copy the original project and media to the external drive using Media Manager. It will maintain the links.

  • Final Cut Pro color problem

So I just got myself a new 24' LED monitor for my home edit suite, and I have been very pleased with it.  I just happened to open FCP to see adjust my workspace for the bigger setup, and I noticed a strange problem.  In FCP, the viewer and the canvas look very dark, like the brightness is turned down.  It also looks that way on my laptop monitor, which has always been my second edit monitor.
However, my project exports look nothing like that on the same monitor.  I thought perhaps the monitor wasn't calibrated properly, but the Quicktimes look fine.  I've attached a screen shot of the problem.  The image on top is the Quicktime, and the image on the bottom is the FCP canvas.  What's happened to my FCP?  Is it some sort of color profile or does it have to do with the resolution?  Is it a FCP setting or a monitor setting?  I don't understand why it changed how it looked on my laptop monitor, since nothing changed with it.  Any insight would be fantastic!
    Thanks

I believe this is the difference between  broadcast gamma output via something like a AJA KONA card and a regular monitor gamma. Go into Final Cut Pro- System Settings and select the Playback control tab. Change the Gamma Correction from "Accurate" to "Approximate"
When you reset this you can then start to calibrate your monitor. Without that gamma setting changed you can crank all of your monitor settings to maximun brightness and you'll never ever see the pluge on your color bars.
    Good Luck,

  • Send to - Final Cut Pro XML data not seeing my Color render

    Sup folks,
As always I did some lurking on these boards and consulted the manual about this issue.
    Nada.
I've rendered my shots. They were all queued. They were all rendered.
When I use the Send to -> Final Cut Pro command I get the "not all your clips were rendered" warning. I click yes to see what I will get.
FCP imports the XML data and I get nothing. All of the clips in my FCP timeline generated through the Send to -> Final Cut Pro command are all of my original media prior to my color workflow. Not my graded Color renders.
I did move my renders from a local drive to an external because of data capacity. After doing so I did update my Media, Render and Project paths to the new location of my media.
I thought that would fix my problem. It didnt.
So again: my issue is that even with my shots all rendered correctly (i checked them in QT) the XML being sent to FCP through the Send to -> Final Cut Pro command is not hooking up with my renders.
    Deadline tomorrow.
    As always,thanks for your time

I did move my renders from a local drive to an external because of data capacity. After doing so I did >update my Media, Render and Project paths to the new location of my media.
If I'm following the sequence correctly, you rendered your material to a local drive. Then you moved it, changed the paths (in COLOR), and then tried to "Send to... FCP". Is this correct? If so, doomed to failure. In your case, you may have even moved an empty folder.
There is an ironclad and non-negotiable series of events in rendering and initiating the roundtrip. Many users regard this as a "bug". One of the first things that a user should always do is set up all the target paths before even doing the first grade. But it is essential that the target render path be set up PRIOR to loading the Render Queue. COLOR creates the receiving folder at that time, and that is where the media will go no matter what you do after the RenderQueue is loaded. Change the path, change the format... change whatever you want... the deal has been done, and all will be ignored. However, once the media is rendered and you choose Send To... FCP, then the original XML that FCP sent will be modified by COLOR and passed back to Final Cut. COLOR does NOT,repeat, NOT generate EDLs, XMLs, or any of that stuff. It only modifies original lists. That you modified the Media, Render and Project paths (probably only in the User Preferences tab) is meaningless once the project has been rendered. The Render path for this individual project is determined in the Project Settings pane, along with the render dimensions and format. However, COLOR will observe a path change AFTER the render, and edits the XML re-export to try to find the media in the newly named directory. Of course, your media is actually elsewhere, and you get a blank sequence.
Lastly, make sure that you SAVE the project after renders, to retain the "rendered" clip status -- or COLOR won't remember any of this.

  • Whenever I press spacebar to playback my video project in final cut pro X, the color wheel pops up and freezes the computer. Doesn't matter what computer I use. Why and how do I fix this?

Like I said, I'm doing a simple video and have finally made some progress in editing. All of a sudden, when I try to replay the video the color wheel pops up and nothing works. It just keeps spinning and spinning with no end. I end up having to force quit the program. When I restart it the same thing happens. I've tried it on 3 different computers and the results have been the same. I've read that perhaps the software needs to be updated through the mac store, I did that to no avail. I also read that perhaps the preferences for the project/final cut pro need to be reset. I downloaded a program that is supposed to do this for me but it didn't work I also went into Preferences in Final Cut and hit reset under editing tab which also did not work. I"m really frustrated about this and I"m getting paid for this video. This needs to be resolved ASAP.  Thanks in advance for the help: ask any questions.

Please give complete details of your system and the media and the project properties.
