Translucent iBook Battery

Hello Eveyone,
My MacBook was fine, but I needed soneting a little more portable. When I was at a Computer Flea in Boston, I picked up a 500Mhz iBook Dual USB with a DVD Drive for $25.
Well, of course, you don't get much for $25, so as a project, I am going to fix it up and upgrade it. All of the components are in working order, but the case parts are pretty shot. I will be getting them from PowerBook Tech, so I'm pretty much set there.
But, the battery in it is dead and damaged, so I need to replace that. But, the battey is the original and is a translucent plastic one. Apple doesn't produce the translucent batteries anymore to my knowledge, they are all opaque.
So my question is, where am I able to find a translucent plastic iBook battery? It can be in any condition, any amount of life left, it doesn't matter. I know the opaque batteries do the same thing, but the opaque battery doesn't fit in with the rest of the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
-Brian

You know...
Since you have to replace the case anyway you might want to change the color too! It’s really easy to do:
1) Soak the case (and battery cover) in rubbing alcohol then wipe off the white paint. Some spots will be stubborn so soak a paper towel in alcohol to get those spots.
2) Carefully pry off the white bracket piece on the top. This is the piece that goes around the display. Use lots of alcohol here too. It helps dissolve the glue.
3) When you are down to clear plastic wash the case in warm soapy water and let dry overnight.
4) Mask off the front with paper and masking tape. You don’t want paint on the outside. Then spray several light coats of Krylon spray paint for plastics. They make lots of colors.
*You can even mask off shapes inside the case. When the paint is dry remove them and you now have windows in your case where you can place your favorite photos! It ends up looking like those laptop skins – only your photos are on the INSIDE!
Here is a photo of one I did in red:

Whatever you decide to do – good luck!

  • IBook battery heating up - is this normal?

I just upgraded to an iBook from a Pismo a few days ago, and I've been taking it for a test ride.
I've found that the iBook battery seems to heat up very fast: after about 30 minutes to 1 hour, it gets quite hot on the top. I know the bottom is supposed to be hot (it seems all Mac portables have hot bottoms) but is the heat from the top something to worry about?
Strangely, my 6-year-old Pismo doesn't seem to put out as much heat as my iBook, although that might just be the casing design.

Its not normal, my battery is barley even warm.

I have a 12" ibook g4 and I am thinking of upgrading to a 12" powerbook, can i use the two batteries I already own for my ibook compatible with a 12" powerbook?

I don't think so, I believe the ibook battery is physically different in thickness and size.

  • Finally a good iBook battery story!

    Hello
After searching these forums in the archived section i found one where a person here recommend a ibook battery from a seller on eBay. finally after thinking for weeks what seller i wanted to buy my battery from i had something to go on-a positive review from someone here. i bought the battery which arrived today and since have tested it.
i took the old one out put the new one in and turned it on from the battery. i thought that i would try it out of the box and it worked and up in the corner showed that it was already at a 50% charge. i since have charged it and as i type this its currently after a hour of use showing a 93-92%charge. this battery came with a one year warrenty and shiped fast.
sorry if this was long or a useless thread but i thought that it would help out people who want to find a good battery on eBay for cheap and from a good seller!

  • TruePowerPremium iBook Battery ...

I had to get a new battery for my G4 iBook. Our local Apple shop sold me a TruePowerPremium iBook Battery, which claims the "Highest Capacity, up to 50% More Capacity."
I've already allowed the battery to go completely dead three times, and fully charged the battery each time. I still only get barely two hours of normal use.
With the original battery I was getting six hours of use. Last summer I was still getting between 4 1/2 and 5 hours of usage. I bought the iBook in June of 2004.
The Apple shop told me that my iBook battery doesn't qualify for free replacement.
Question: Is there a better battery than the TruePowerPremium iBook Battery? I am very disappointed that I can only get two hours of normal use from this brand new battery!!!
    Help .... Thanks.

  • Which is a better brand of iBook Battery Cell?

Having a debate with a college over which brand of iBook battery makes a better replacement? He said those alternate brand batteries consist of Panasonic Cells.
Apple batteries are made with Cells from Samsung. Would anyone care to comment on which is of a better quality?

  • How do I dispose of my Li-ion iBook battery?

I have a burned out battery.
Do I recycle this with other Li-ion batteries or is there a manufacturer that rebuilds these that would want it?
    Advice?

    eWaste Recycling Facility Search:
    http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/electronics/Collection/RecyclerSearch.aspx
    e-cycling central - find a recycler:

disposal of Universal Waste (category defined)
    http://www.dtsc.ca.gov/HazardousWaste/UniversalWaste/
There may be a big-box electronics seller near you where they accept
small batteries from computers, cameras, and so on. You may have to
call and ask; or see if site links such as the above direct you to exact
locations where these products get returned for recycle & reuse.
Some sites and service providers charge a fee in association with the
handling of this class of product; since all batteries should be recycled
and various metals and chemicals should not go into a landfill. Also,
to inquire of the computer specialist in your area about this topic may
be helpful in the proper disposal of e-waste. Information is available.
{The actual chemical component of the iBook battery should not be too
different from any other li-on portable battery; that probably would be no
    problem to include that cell with others of that kind/type in the same bin.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Best place to buy iBook battery in UK

I reckon my battery needs replacing.
Can anyone recommend a good place in the UK to get one for my G3/800 iBook?
I know I know Google could give me an answer, but put in iBook Battery and it really is a bit of a mammouth trawl to find exactly what I'm looking for and then comparing prices.
    I'm happier with a recommendation.
    Thanks

Well, I did a little bit of the trawling for you, but can't offer a recommendation, since I'm not there myself. I know this is not what you had in mind, but…

  • IBook Battery?

    Hi everyone,
I just wanted to know are the iBook battery model numbers A1008 and M8403 the same battery? I have checked out on the internet and they seem to be the same, just needed some advice
    Thanks
    Danny

I've done some more checking, Danny, and it appears that Tiger Direct's listing is incorrect.
Here is the Apple Knowledge Base article on identifying the proper battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86797
When I Googled the identification number there, I found this webpage (among others) that identify the two numbers you asked about as interchangeable:
    http://shop.store.yahoo.com/laptopsforless/lapbatforapm3.html
So it looks like either will work. Sorry for the earlier misinformation.

  • IBook Battery Exchange

Hi my serial number on my iBook battery is:
    6C5345 VLS9YD
Can someone help me with regards to the Apple Battery Exchange, does my battery need to be replaced? I'm a bit confused

    Hi Luka,
    According to:
    https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/
your battery is not subject to the recall. Although the first few numbers of your battery serial, i.e. 6C5345, fall within the range "6C519 - 6C552"; your letters, i.e. VLS9YD don't fall within "ending with S9WA, S9WC or S9WD".
    Take care,

  • New iBook Battery Problems

    Hello!
I have a problem with my 3 month old iBook. It seems that whenever its hits 50% battery status it turns off (not sleep, but turns off). Because it turns off at 50% I cannot calibrate the battery because it will not drain any further.
Is something wrong or am i being thick? Am I allowed to claim a new battery since the ibook is only 3 months old?
    Many thanks,
    palmerar

Your iBook is still under warranty so i think you should contact Apple and inform them of this. Applecare have sorted out all of my problems (iBook battery, iPod headphones) with a minimum of fuss.

  • IBook Battery Compatible

I have an older iBook Dual USB 500 mhz, model M6497. It currently has an M8403 battery, which doesn't hold a charge for very long. I also have a 12 inch G4 iBook which no longer is operable. Can i use the A1061 battery from iBook G4 in my older iBook. I have read the postings that older batteries can be used in the newer computers. Is the reverse true? Are there any wattage incompatibility or other incompatibilty issues? Thanks.

    Hey Chibruins,
So I am hoping the battery is okay.
Well I have one here in my stock. Unfortunately it's one of my better batteries.
I will probably send it in for replacement since it will be donated soon.
I have like 7 12" batteries here and don't know which is from a G4 or G3 unless I closely examine the model #.
It was apparently damaged by moisture and is too costly to repair.
Well I'd be willing to take a look at it if it wasn't salt water.
On the other hand I have a 1.2 GHz board looking for a home and a new GPU. I would be able to supply a letter of donation and particulars. If you're interested mail me.

  • How to correctly remove/install iBook battery plus battery problem

My iBook G4 (14 inch screen, late 2005 model) battery may need replacing. Lately when using only battery power, the computer has shut down suddenly when the power gets down somehere below 50%. If I were to get a new battery, what is the correct way to replace it? In the computer user's manual on p. 47 under "Using Your Battery" it says "If your battery runs low while you are working, attach your power adapter and let the battery recharge. If you want to replace the battery with a charged one, attach the power adapter, shut down your iBook, and replace the battery. If you replace the battery without the power adapter attached, you can lose information and settings such as the date and time." But on p. 48 under "Removing and Replacing the Battery" it says under To Remove the Battery: "Shut down your iBook. Disconnect the power adapter, phone card, and any other cables to the computer to prevent damaging the computer." Which is correct: leave the power adapter connected, or disconnect it? Thanks!
If anyone has any thoughts about what could be causing the shut downs when using battery power, that would also be helpful. I have mostly used the power adapter, letting the computer run on battery power occasionally. The system profiler says I have gone through only 15 cycles. I did calibrate the battery when I first got the computer.

Talked to Applecare on the phone and they also supported the idea of resetting the PMU, which I have now done. Restarted the computer and ran it off the battery the rest of the day. When it got below 50% the computer shut down once again. This time when I turned it back on the battery showed only 1% power! The previous times the battery would show 46% or whatever it was when it shut down. Then I turned off the computer, plugged in the AC power adapter, and let it charge overnight, but now 11 hours later, the battery indicator has gotten up to only 56% and will go no higher. The System Profiler says the battery is now not charging and indicates that the capacity is 3888 and the remaining capacity is 2180. It still shows 15 cycles, which is what it showed before. I guess I will be heading into the Apple Store soon. Any other thoughts before I do?

  • Cheap ibook battery replacement?

I know this has been touched on in other posts, but I can't find definitive answers.
The battery on my 2.5 year old iBook is completely shot, it holds absolutely no charge (not even enough power to keep the computer asleep).
I'm looking for the absolute cheapest replacement battery, since I don't want to put much more money into this laptop. But, I don't want to buy junk that doesn't work. I've seen replacement iBook batteries on ebay for as little as $60; some claim to have a 6 month or 9 month warranty on them.
On Amazon, I'm finding replacement batteries in the $70-$90 range from brands like "Encore Power", "Hi-capacity", "TechPower", and "Dekcell"; some claiming a 1 year warranty.
Does anyone have any experience with any cheap replacement batteries? I've heard of some that don't fit well or just don't work well; but I'd be curious to hear from more people about them. Thanks!

The cheapest one I've found for a 14-inch iBook is at _Priority Electronics_. The batteries for the 14-inch models are scarcer and more expensive than the batteries for the 12-inch iBooks.

  • IBook battery problems

Ok so I bought a new battery for my Ibook G4 on ebay. I charged and then drained and it worked fine for a day or two. When I first charge the battery and take out the power adapter it works fine, but when I shut down and try to turn the computer on the next day without the adapter, the battery doesn't work. Sometimes one blinking green LED will still lit on the battery for days even when it's not turned on. The current issue I'm having now is that even though the battery is installed, the computer doesn't recognize it. Can someone please help me and let me know on what I should do. I think I already tried everything.

    thanks for the reply
I removed the battery again to check the connections, and they are all shiney. Once i placed the battery back in the laptop wont charge it at all now, the orange light comes on, but in MacOS it just shows the running with charged battry symbol.
    any other ideas?
    Thanks
