Mac OSX 10.9.4
After spending all day developing film I find myself unable to scan contact sheets from the film.
Made one attempt using Vue Scan software, by placing the film strips directly on the glass. The result was less than optimal, so I placed two of the 120 film strips into the film holder that came with the scanner. The result as a double-click sound from the transparancy lid and no scan.
Tried again; same result.
Rebooted computer; tried again and same result.
Switched to the HP software (HP Scanjet Scanner 2.4.4); same result.
Tried a flatbed scan with the film still in position; scan completed (but of course useless).
Ran another transparancy scan using the HP software; again a double click sound from the transparancy lid with no scan.
Has the transparancy function stopped working?

Search option stopped working - spotlight as well

I use the search option of Mail on a daily basis to find old emails or topics. I have also used Spotlight to search old emails. Recently my Mail program stopped searching old emails and only finds recent emails with keywords that I know used to find many more emails. Anyone else experiencing this? Maybe it is Mac OS X 10.4.10?? It was right around then that it stopped working. Any plans to fix this??

Okay, this seemed to work for me. We have Tom Harrington through te newsgroup, comp.sys.mac.system to thank.
1. Go to "System preferences" (under the apple icon menu)
2. Select "Spotlight"
3. Choose the "Privacy" folder
4. Click the Add and then add your Hard drive
5. Close System preferences.
6. re-open "system preferences" get back the same way to where you added your Hard Drive under privacy.
7. Remove your Hard Drive.
8. Close system preferences.
Now if you go to use Spotlight (not in email but for your compuetr generally - Control and Space Bar) , you'll see that the the system is rebuilding and it will take some number of hours to do so. When finished, at least on my MacBook Pro, the search in Mail was functioning fine again.
Pain in the butt, not very intuitive but it seems to work.

SEARCH IN GOOGLE option stopped working

I reinstalled the OS (Tiger 10.4.8) on my brand new Mac Pro and now the "Search in Google" option, that you get when you ctrl-click (or right click) on any piece of text in most programs, doesn't work. The option is still there, but it doesn't open Safari and do a search like it did before.
The only thing I changed in this install was disabled all printer drivers and multi-language support. I can't imagine that's why it stopped working but I figured I'd mention it anyway. I really miss this option- anyone know how I can get it back!?

For what it's worth, I never figured this out but the option to search in Google eventually came back on its own. I don't know when or how, but I suspect it was probably magic.

"Open safe files after downloading" option stopped working

Hello,
the safari "Open safe files after downloading" stopped working. Even when is checked, it doesn't open anything, no jpgs, no dmgs, no zips. Not sure what could've happened. I installed the new Safari 4.03 update and Speed download today. Any ideas what may be causing this problem? Thank you

One suggestion is to create via the Finder a specific download folder for your attachments. Then in the Finder, drag the folder to the sidebar. Now in Mail, when you save the attachment, simply click on the sidebar location to facilitate the save. Then, go to the Finder, click on the sidebar folder for easy access to the attachment. Remember too, Mail attachment save feature gives you the option of directly importing any images into iPhoto.

Photoshop CS2 Layer Styles / Blending Options stopped working

I'm running Photoshop CS2 on PC. When right clicking on layers to bring up the Layer Styles / Blending Options palette, I can get the palette okay but the selections won't work when I check the boxes.
I try to select different options....drop shadow, inner shadow, etc. but nothing shows up. It's not a preview problem because the changes are not visible in my image even after I select OK.
I've reset my preferences (alt+ctl+shift) but it didn't help.
Can anyone suggest to me what I can do to wake up this palette?? I've got work pending and my online searches have left me empty handed.

John: The file is PSD, RGB mode, 300dpi. Last night, I tried the layer styles in another file and it wouldn't' work.... another NEW file. Today, I opened an existing file that had layers styles already in effect and I can see them, I can click them on/off AND I can put layer styles onto other layers in the existing files that did not have them previously. I just tried creating a new file and, of course, the layer styles now work in the NEW file.... this is something I tried last night and it didn't work at that time.
Ed: Yes, I'm on the right layer. I've tried it on several layers, none of which are transparent. Thanks for the heads up.
So, this tells me it's something to do with this particular image file. I must've accidentally hit something that's put it into a strange mode. Last night, out of frustration, I just gave up, shut it all down, and turned the computer off. This morning, I went in and created a new image document and then one by one I copied and pasted the layers of my malfunctioning image into the new one. Now I can get the layers to work.
I have no idea what was wrong, but it seems I should just trash the problematic file and start fresh. At least the individual layers were not compressed and it's still salvagable.

My fax option worked until yesterday afternoon. Now I have a fax text report and it tells me that I am not using the correct type of phone cord. It has always worked with the phone cord I have plugged in before. Is there a certain phone cord I should be using and if so where can I get one?

LPR options stopped working with Leopard

In Leopard I'm having trouble with getting lpr to print the right number of copies from the command line. It worked in 10.4, but with 10.5 it prints only 1 copy.
I used to be able to do this:
lpr -o orientation-requested=4 media=30252_Address -#6 -P LabelWriter400Turbo /tmp_all/labels/LW01650E0.pdf
I've tried this and it still only prints 1 (and other variations on this....):
lpr -P DYMOLabelWriter_400Turbo -# 6 -o orientation-requested=4 -o media=30252_Address /tmpall/labels/65559H0N0.pdf
To note: the printer queue name changed and the order of options seems to have changed

Why has my password completion option stopped working?

Recently my password completion option has not been working. Well, it seems to be selective and works on some sites and not others. Bad news for me..I have relied on the option so strongly that I do not remember my passwords myself! Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't....
It always worked before! This is only a new problem for about a month now.

1. "Download Yaldex free java script editor" - I did it using a text editor. A java script editor is not necessary and I don't see why it would make the task any easier. It works great by the way. Thanks!
2. It does not work for Windows Live

Internet Explorer 8 will not remember the login info, but works fine when it is entered manually. 2 sites for which this occurs are:

https://www2.onlinecreditcenter6.com/consumergen2/login.do?accountType=generic&clientId=walmart&langId=en&subActionId=1000
(Actually, for the latter, it doesn't autocomplete the user id field until I click in the box - that's also the case for my main bank site https://www.premier-bank.com/index.html - but I can live with this).
So, can you suggest where I might begin searching for solutions to the remembers-info-but-won't-login problem. I don't have a handle on it.

Editing tools and search option stopped working after IOS Update

Hi All,
Since the last IOS & Adobe Reader Update I have been unable to edit or search within existing PDF using the Adobe Reader iPad App. I have noticed the document now shows as protected on the Iphone Adobe Reader App but does not give me any option to unprotect it. Please bear in mind I have been editing this document for over 6 months now and the document shows my previous annotations.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

I can confirm the following:
Your PDF document is not encrypted or locked by password.
This is a defect in Adobe Reader for iOS version 11.6.4 (or possibly all 11.6.x versions) for the particular type of PDF documents like yours. (The problem does not happen with all PDF documents.) The tools/areas that are affected by the defect: Search, text selection, text markup annotations (highlight, strikeout, and underline). However, you can still add other types of annotations, namely sticky notes, free text, and freehand drawing, to the PDF document.
The defect has already been fixed in our internal build for a future release. (I was able to add highlight/strikeout/underline and search text in your PDF document.) Unfortunately, I am not able to speculate on the next release date.
Sorry for the inconvenience. We hope that you switch back to Adobe Reader for iOS once the defect is fixed.

Startup option stopped working

i USED to have it set to "show windows and tabs from last time", but that's no longer helpful.
so i changed it to "show selected Session Manager session".
alas, it refuses to do that.
every morning it opens last night's session. =/
i keep trying to select that option over and over again, to no avail.
and while i'm here, it also refuses to use the cache.
every day, it downloads the pages all new (it's DEFINITELY noticeable!).
what gives?

There are various internal and external mechanisms to clear Firefox's cache.
For the internal mechanisms, you can double-check that this preference is set to false:
privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown
or if it <u>'''is'''</u> set to true, make sure the following preference is set to false:
privacy.clearOnShutdown.cache
(Corresponds to Options > Privacy > Clear history when Firefox closes)
Also, make sure you are not in "permanent private browsing" mode. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/private-browsing-browse-web-without-saving-info#w_how-do-i-always-start-firefox-in-private-browsing
For the external mechanisms, check the options in programs that wipe caches such as CCleaner.
Finally, it's possible for the cache folder metadata files to become corrupted. In that case, you might need to exit Firefox, manually delete everything from the cache folder, and then start from scratch. I've never tried that myself, so I suggest awaiting other comments before trying it.

IBooks Speak to option stopped working

I updated my iPhone 5 with the latest upgrade. Unfortunately, iBook app fails to speak selection for my ibooks. What can I do to fix this problem? I don't like voice over feature

I followed your directions. And I was able to select parts of the book.
For some reason, I can not use Speak Selection for multiple pages as I used to.
The tool Speak selection works better in a couple of paragraphs. But I liked when I could select at least 3 pages at the time! :(

NOKIA 500: Smart dialing stopped working after con...

I'm having lots of problems with this phone. First, mail inbox mess, with yahoo accounts not syncing at all or ActiveSync problems...
In this case, the smart dialing option stopped working. This happens when I restore contacs from a backup file. I know because I made a hard reset *#7370# and until I restored the contacts, the search function worked. Please, work around this bug.

This process and experience is ridiculous at this point after numerous, unsuccessful tries.
Update:
Yet again I deleted the \cities folder & qf file from my memory card. I ran Ovi Maps, my cities folder was re-created, I went to My Position and got the expected red dot. Closed Ovi Maps, enabled Bluetooth, connected with the NMT tool then re-ran the Nokia Map Loader.
Surprisingly, the Nokia Map Loader appeared to connect fine with my device without error. When I selected USA Maps, the tool started downloading, got past the half way point and I saw as message stating "unpacking files". It was actively copying whatever part of the downloaded files it had grabbed to my memory card. Great, or so I thought, as this is as far as I've gotten in the last 48 hrs.
I then got an unexpected error in the Nokia Map Loader and the app closed. The error log is in the attached text file on this thread. (EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV))
I restarted the Nokia Map Loader and got the same error to reappear immediately but it re-connected with my device. This is the only app crashing like this on my Mac and giving this error. Previously, the error was EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT).
Now I'm quite annoyed that the Nokia Map Loader does NOT pick up where it left off in the download process before the app crashed. Therefore, I'm attempting to re-download US Maps for the final time, all 1.5GB of it. Hopefully it will complete this time.
Not a good Nokia experience regarding mapping updates at all, at least in the Mac environment.

Message "itunes has stopped working". Itunes opens and can read an audio cd but as soon as the "get information" option is selected the message "itunes has stopped working" and the computer freezes or at least slows to a snail's pace.

I have a PC running Windows 7 - 64bit OS. I have had iTunes installed since the beginning of the year on this computer and have not had any trouble with it except actually using iTunes but that is a different issue. The other day I inadvertently downloaded "Tuneup" which I don't want or need. I firstly want to say I have no concrete evidence that Tuneup has led to my problems. It may be coincidental that Tuneup and my problems appeared together.
Tonight when I started iTunes, Tuneup took over a quarter of the screen on the right side. I closed this program. When the list of tracks was ready to be loaded from the CD and I went to" file" - "get info" option the message "iTunes has stopped working" would appear. Closing this message resulted in iTunes shutting down. I should say that before I closed the message the computer had essentially ground to a halt. The other curious thing was the behavour of the mouse pointer on the screen - the only place where it was visible was in the "iTunes has stopped working" box. Moving it out of the message box resulted in it disappearing. It would reappear if it were caused to wander into the message box.
I subsequently removed Tuneup (control panel, programs and features, etc...) iTunes had not improved. I then deleted iTunes, firstly saving the library to a file on the desktop. Then I did a fresh(?) install of ITunes but there seems to be no change. A curious thing was even though I had deleted iTunes through the control panel the library was still there as if I had done nothing. The whole thing is a complete mystery and extremely galling.
If someone has had a similar problem I would really like to know what the fixes were.

I had a similar problem. I'm using 64bit Windows7. The following solution worked for me:
COPY    QTMovieWin.dll
FROM    c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\
INTO     c:\program files (x86)/iTunes
Also, reinstalling Quicktime has worked for others having this same issue.

Photoshop CS5 Clone Stamp Tool option-click just stopped working, why?

I've been using clone stamp tool option-click (healing brush option-click also) on Photoshop CS5 on my Mac 10.6.5 and it stopped working suddenly on Monday. Had just used it on Sunday. So, I've tried to isolate the problem.
1. Went to Apple store and my keyboard and mouse work fine on their inhouse systems running Photosochop CS5. Problem still exists on home system.
2. Adobe photoshop suggested I go back to Mac 10.6.3. I did and problem still exits.
3. Reset all presets in CS5. Problem still exists.
4. Spent several hours with Adobe Photoshop tech on phone -- he couldn't make it work remotely either using his keyboard. Reloaded Photoshop from scratch. Problem still exists.
Question:
Could this be a hardware problem? Graphic board problem?
Or is this a software problem aside from Mac OS and CS5?

..... I wonder why the guru thought your system was gone if your new user account was working?
If your new user account is working.... why not use it? The system seems fine but something went screwy with the settings in your original account.
hopefully someone else will chime in here with more insight before you start from scratch.
