Transparency effecting (desaturating) layer underneath

I have a group of vector images that I have applied a multiply effect over a black and white photo. (the intention is to create a puppet-like shadow effect over a photo) However the photo underneath the vector artwork, which is on a separate layer loses saturation as soon as any effect is applied to the vector artwork. A first I thought this was only on screen, but I've done print test and the results are the same as they appear on screen - the photo becomes desaturated. When I look at the flattener preview it shows the photo underneath as affected, but is there any way I can keep the layer underneath from not desaturating?

Saturation usually refers to the intensity of colour in an image. Open a colour image in Photoshop and go to Image > Adjust > Hue / Saturation and dial down the saturation. See? Grayscale. So how is transparency reducing the saturation in an image that has no saturation?
Regardless of that confusion: Your image should be in Image > Mode > Grayscale, and your transparency blend space in InDesign should be CMYK. Also make sure the shadow colour is defined as black only, since this is a two colour job.

  • How to make a vector into a shaper of transparency on a layer rather than shape of layer?

I'm working on a drawing that somehow I've created a layer on -- all blue, that has what looks like a vector mask
over it, but the vector mask, instead of shaping the layer, creates a transparancy in the layer.
And I don't know how to reproduce this effect!
Every time I create a vector mask, it shapes the layer.
If I take that vector looking mask on that layer, and try to copy it to another layer -- it shapes the layer!
If I copy it back to the original layer -- it shapes the original layer...
So there's something about the vector mask that says the shape of the layer is everything on the 'outside' of the vector.
How in the heck!?  The 'invert' button is not available when you go into 'masks' and look at the vector masks.
So how might I recreate this type of transparency mask?  It's driving me crazy, cuz there it is -- just like I want it, but I can't
reproduce it!  I've tried dup'ing the blend settings on the layer-- but they don't seem to have an effect.
    Ideas?

    Thanks!
I  looked through the reference docs and couldn't find anything on how to  do this.  Is it in the reference docs anywhere, do you know? Or is just  another one of those things that people learn, but Adobe doesn't  document.
I can see if someone has 'grown up  w/photoshop' and realizes what tools are "orthogonal" to other tools of  those, which can have their settings altered to do something meaninful  with the primary tool, it could be a powerful tool (and is touted as  being so), but if you don't know the interconnects, it doesn't seem like  they are well documented in the reference manual.
I   wonder if Adobe might consider having someone like Grinder and Bandler**  write a manual to bring people 'into' the photoshop world -- to
give  people an awareness of which tools were orthogonal and retrain  someone's mind to think in terms of building up an effect by combining  different aspects of orthogonal tools.   I wonder if it would even be  possible to write such a book...(just some late sunday musings).

  • InDesign Transparency Effects - Problems with Image Quality and File Size

    Hello,
We are experiencing new problems exporting InDesign files to PDF.
To summarize, though our largest workflow is to create files for offset printing, we also deliver our work to PDF for mounting on a website so our clients can download directly from the web. Our new problem is Transparency Effects, and creating a PDF that will both have a high quality (or resolution), and be a small file size.
We are working with multiple page documents (24 to 48 pages), and would very much like to work with InDesign Transparency Effects. However, after spending much time testing a variety of PDF types, we are finding there is a radical difference between quality and file size. I was curious if anyone has had these problems, and if there is a simple answer. InDesign is an incredible program that allows us to design on the fly with Transparency Effects, but, if we are going to experience these problems, we will have to eliminate these wonderful tools.
Can you help me or lead me to information online that will help.
    Thank you,
    Lain

Please don't post in multiple forums. Your question has nothing to do with the PDF language and specifications, but rather PDF workflow or InDesign. I've responded to your other posting and am closing this thread.

  • Title: How to give transparency effect to JFrame?

    Hai,
we are developing stand alone application using java swing. In our application we need to show an image in JFrame. We draw an image in JPanel using JPanel's paintComponent method. Then we place this JPanel into JFrame. The image is having transparent effect. But we are not able to give transparency effect to JFrame so we couldn't see desktop we are seeing only JFrame's background. *{color:#0000ff}How to give transparency effect to JFrame?*

    Thanks for your help.

It's not a commited part of the standard API yet, but as of 1.6_10 you can add transparency effects to a window through the use of
com.sun.awt.AWTUtilitiesI think this was the original article on the release. If you google, you will find many creative ideas that people have come up with using this particular feature.

  • Transparency effects are not updated on frame's content change(shardow, etc.)

    Hello everyone.
    I've faced the following problem:
My shape, which is based on CGraphicsFrameShape and kSplinePageItemBoss does not update it's transparency effects after changing own content.
The content is drawn by AGMImageRecord and IGraphicsPort::image. I also use IXPUtils::CreateImagePaintServer,IGraphicsPort::SetAlphaServer for drawing image with some transparecy mask ( the idea is stolen from SDK's sample "Transparency effects" ).
When user sets some transparency effects, and then changes the content of the shape - the effect (eg. shadow) presists from the previous content. It is updated (sets as a shadow for current content) only when user resizes the shape.
I tried Inval method, DrawPageItemAdornments method, InvalPageItemAdornments method, but nothing works - the shadow still gets updated only on frame's resize.
What can be done, and what guru do in such cases?

And one more moment - this happens only when display performance is set to "typical". When "high quality" is set - everything updates well.

  • After Effects error : layer does not have a source.

    Hi All,
I add a Text layer and then add my custom fill  effect to it. Then I call AdvItemSuite1()->PF_ForceRerender(in_data, &(params[0]->u.ld)) from AEGP for all the layers. But only for Text layer, AE pops up a dialog displaying the following error :
After Effects error : layer does not have a source.
    (26::335)
Why is this happening? What other call can I use to rerender all the layers?
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Transparent effect

hi can anyone show me how to apply transparent effect to 3d object/simple object like glass in illustrator cs4 plz

    As you can see:
Individual surfaces do interact transparently; even inside and outside surfaces of the same path.
Mapped Symbol is opaque and interacts correctly with the translucent surfaces. (Symbol can be made to assume transparency of the surface to which it's mapped by turning on Shade Artwork.)
Different transparency can be applied to separate paths within the same Revolved Group, and/or to individual Strokes and Fills of the same path. (Rendering aberations are likely, depending upon geometry.)
It is not necessary to expand, ungroup, etc., etc. (The Revolve object below is still completely live and rotateable.)
In other words, Opacity can be applied at the Appearance level or the object level, either before applying the 3D Effect or after.
Also, Draw Hidden Faces is turned off in the drawing below. (Faces are not hidden if they are visible through a translucent surface.)
Making something "look like glass" however, involves more than just applying Illustrator's 3D Effect to translucent paths (and can be rendered with or without 3D Effect; and with or without transparency effects). Convincing glass rendering is like convincing rendering of any other shiny surface: It involves judicious drawing of highlights and reflections, not just one-click, instant-gratification effects.

  • Swatch control in transparency effects

Does Adobe have any plans to incorporate swatch control in transparency effects? What I mean is, say you want transparency effects to affect all but one swatch. And where it interacts with that particular color - no effect. Or, the opposite, have the transparency affect ONLY one swatch, and ignore other colors.
To have a feature like this, the document swatches would probably have to be listed in the effects dialog, maybe with check boxes to turn swatches on or off. I think a feature like this would be very useful.
To see what I mean, draw 3 boxes on an InDesign page, make all 3 overlap. Color one cyan, one magenta, and one yellow. Bring magenta and yellow both to the front, and set to multiply. Make sure magenta and yellow only overlap within the area of the cyan (refer to the image). There is green overlap, blue overlap, and dark brown. The brown is where all 3 overlap. Is there a way to make the brown area red - and leave everything else the same? (The red would come from yellow and magenta being multiplied, with no cyan not participating).
Do this without a pathfinder command, or drawing a red box, or a white box to KO the cyan, or drawing any extra objects or changing the exiting shapes. If there is no way to do it, then OK, I didn't think there was. But if some sort of color or ink control is incorporated in the future it would be possible. Transparency is applied to objects and groups. Why not extend the capability to colors as well? It would add a new dimension of control.
In the example, if the cyan swatch was excluded from the transparency effects, the brown area would be red. No extra artwork added, no modifying the existing shapes.
If you group the yellow and magenta, and isolate blending, it's true the red color is achieved. But the green and blue overlaps are also eliminated. I want to know if it is possible (or ever will be possible) to selectively control document swatches in a transparency context.

Maybe listing swatches with effects would create too much confusion. If it canceled transparencies, people may get frustrated trying to figure out why the transparency has no effect on an object, when in fact the negated transparency is being caused by the underlying object's color.
Setting aside the swatch idea for now – what about something much simpler, and much more attainable? Is it possible to add a feature that makes an underlying object "immune" to transparencies of objects on top of it?
This would be one simple option that could be enabled. The result would be this: any blend modes on top of the object would not affect the object. They become normal blend mode in relation to the specified object. A simple knockout. (Drop shadows could still exist on top of the object of course, but they would not multiply)
You could go a step further and split this option into two, one targeting blend modes, and the other opacities. The blend mode would probably be the more commonly used - making all objects on top knock out, with one simple command.
Basically the object won't allow transparencies above it to interact with it. It would eliminate the need for modifying the objects shape, or creating additional objects to achieve a knockout.
In the case of the 3 blocks, the cyan would be assigned "immune to transparency effects". So the area where all 3 boxes intersect becomes red. A very simple solution. I think people would use this feature.
How do you go about getting Adobe to consider adding something like this to InDesign, or other applications?

  • Transparent Deployment Using Layer 4 Switch

    Hi,
Just want to ask how to deploy WSA Ironport on transparent mode on layer 4 Switch.
I believe it is just deployed by choosing Layer 4 on Transparent Redirection on WSA Ironport.
But the question is, what will I need to configure to my Layer 4 switch for it to redirect traffic to WSA?
I'm trying to connect it to a hp procurve layer 4 switch to use transparent redirection.
Can someone clarify how to deploy it?
    Thanks

Make sure your swtich can do it:
    http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Switches-Hubs-Modems-Legacy-ITRC/HP-Procurve-2626-Policy-based-routing/td-p/5421071
I did some digging and didn't find any decent docs on setting it up... but if you take your drawing from the L4TM question you posted, you want to set up a policy that for the "security vlan" so that all IP traffic on the web ports you want to monitor (80, 443, plus others you might want) gets sent to the IP of the WSAProxy
    Here's a bit I lifted from a post on HP's site:
    http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03015541/c03015541.pdf
You'll want to have a look through Chapter 8 for the configuration. You've got to basically configure a traffic class, configure policies for it, and then apply it (in this case) to each of the VLANs you want it for.
What kind of firewall are you using?  If its a Cisco ASA, it would actually be simpler to do WCCP to the WSA...

  • Making a visible top layer invisible for buttons/ controls on a layer underneath it.

    THE PROJECT
I have 3 layers in a CS3 project, in the following order:
    - top Layer (semi-transparent Vignet Layer, and some additional Graphics, all this is contained in a dynamicly loaded mc)
    - Middle layer (Content, this contains the navigation and content. All of this loads dynamicly)
    - Background (this contains a screenfilling Background image and some graphic alements, all this is contained in a dynamicly loaded mc)
    THE PROBLEM
The top layer blocks all off the dynamic content because its on top of it.
    SOLUTION
Dynamicly disable the top layer, so flash doent use it anymore.
I want to keep it visible, but not accessible for any mouse actions.
It has to keep the dynamic content underneath it visible for interaction.
I hope I Described it clear enough, so someone can give me the solution.
I gues it's some real simple code attachment.
    Thanks.

I made a quick exaample to demo having a layer of something atop a controls layer and disabling it from interfering with controls below it.  For this example, the lightened rectangular area is the Vignet layer that sits atop a button on a layer below it--I threw in a background layer too, just to cofuse the eyeballs I guess..  When you click the button it enables the Vignet layer so that it blocks the button, and clicking on it disables it again... just a liuttle variety of commands that might be useful for you at some point.
If you can let me/us know whow you file differs, then maybe it will be easier to identify a different solution if one is needed.

  • Transparent Gradient Adjustment Layer

I would like to create an adjustment layer (so I can easily tweak it later) that creates the exact same effect as a gradient tool in the follwing example.  I for the life of me can't figure out how to do it, maybe it's just not possible...
Using the gradient tool to create a mask I can easily get this result (note the gradient fades the image but maintains a transparent background):
Using a gradient adjustment layer I am forced to choose a color (white to transparent) and I get this:
I want the the former (transparent fade) so I can easily drop it over any color background later, but I want to later so I can easily adjust the % of fade later.
Is there any way to make a gradient adjustment layer fade to transparent?  I thought maybe some combination of layer blending would accomplish it, but haven't been able to figure it out.  I'm trying to keep it simple, but it's ok if the solution is a little complicated as I plan to automate it into an action that'll be applied to dozens, maybe hundreds, of images.

»Is there any way to make a gradient adjustment layer fade to transparent?«
Obviously, because that’s what Your gradient is – white from 100% opacity to 0%.
Transparency is a feature of the layer, its blending settings, clipping masks, any masks applied to it or the containing groups … – so it cannot be added »on top«, as You seem to assume.
If I understand correctly You want to use it as a mask for another layer.
One way to achieve that would be to place the gradient (X% opacity to Y%) below the layer You want to mask, convert it to a Smart Object (or rasterize it), set its Fill to 0%, turn off Blend Clipped Layers as a Group in the Blending Options and create a Clipping Mask (alt-click on the line between the gradient and the layer above in the Layers Panel).
Changing the fade would then necessitate opening the SO and making the changes there, so convenience-wise that’s not so great.
But maybe someone else has a better idea.
Incidentally: Your screenshot seems to indicate that You don’t make use of Smart Objects to automatically update the »reflection« with the upper object and You might want to consider it.

  • InDesign - Transparency Effects not displaying in PDFs

I am experiencing a situation where I have a Frame with a stroke and a multiply effect which does not display in the PDF. If the multiply effect is removed, the object displays in the PDF. (I am using the PDF/X-4 preset to create the PDF.)
Any new paths created within the document exhibit the same results.
If I create a Frame or Path in a NEW document, apply the stroke and multiply effect, and then copy and paste it into my first document, the pasted items display in the PDF without difficulty.
If I copy the troublesome Frame from the original document and paste it into a new document, it exhibits the same results (it will not display in the PDF). I then create a new Frame in the new document, on the same layer, and with the same attributes. When a PDF is created the troblesome Frame will not display, but the new Frame right next to it will.
I have preflighted the resulting PDF, and both Frames are listed in the Form XObjects. I can also use the selection tool the the Acrobat Plug-In PitStop to select the Frame which is not displayed.
    1. Am I missing a setting which is object specific and is carried with the copy paste?
    2. What else could be the cause of this situation?

The transparency problem seems to be initiated by an interaction with other pages in the document. If I delete a range of pages, or move the troublesome page earlier in the document, I am able to create new transparent content that will display when PDF'ed, but the existing transparent content still exhibits the same problem.
Somehow specific content on the page is retaining the characteristics from this interaction with the other pages. Content has been moved to another layer without success, and prior to the page move new content was created on another layer without success.
I have uploaded samples including the original 52 page InDesign document with all confidential content removed except for some transparent objects on page 52. In this current state the existing objects and and new transparent objects will not display in the PDF.

I tried to delete the layer attempt again. I am in a Photoshop class, but the work is all online, so all my teacher is going to do is send me to this site. I am trying to edit a photo for this class, and without this working, i go to filter>render>light effects. the bar and panel will pop up for about 2 seconds, then disappear. How do i get the options bar and properties panel to display?

I was about to suggest resetting LE from the Workspace drop-down top right corner, but if you can't see the Options Bar, I guess that is not going to happen.  The normal Tool reset is grey out for LE, so it might be a case of resetting Preferences.

  • InDesign Transparency Effect vs. pdf file size

I have an Interactive pdf that was created from InDesign. There is  "inner glow" is an effect style created box style. This box style is used a number of times in the 30  page document. The glow is a gradient from black to transparent which looks  like an inner shadow for the boxes (sample attached). When I generate the pdf file, size is about 12 Mgb, too large for the target audience.
When I alter the style in InDesign to say something simple like a 10%  black solid fill, the pdf file size decreases to about 1 Mgb.
Looked into "flattening transparency" options but this creates pdf that has none of the interactive buttons and links that are required.
Really would like to avoid creating these boxes in photoshop since there are about 40 different sizes of the box.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

For some reason I can't find reply on Forums site, so replying to this

  • Shadow/Gradient Fade to Transparent Effect

Hello. I am using PS CS3 on MAC and I am trying to create the inner shadow gradient fade to transparent show in the sidebar of this webpage: http://kinoma.com/about/
First, I create a rectangle with linear gradient fill that fades to transparent. Then I create an inner shadow on the left of the sidebar. I'm stuck on what to do next. How do I fade the entire sidebar to transparent on different sides? Thanks.

Black to transparent gradient from left to right (then reduce opacity), then make a layer mask and make a gradient from top to bottom that's black to white to black.
