Transparency probe when making pdf

Hello,
Have just got a new laptop and running cs5 on all but indesign which is cs3. I have a piece of artwork which has drop shadow and when I make a pdf on my old machine the shadow is fine and everything else but when making a pdf of the same artwork running cs3 on the new laptop which is a macbook pro intel i7 running lion I have issues with the drop shadow which is looking muddy and the text box background is showing asa tint! Have tried changing transparency flattener etc to no avail but  the prob does go away when saving a as adobe 4 pdf 1.3 instead of adobe 5. The pdf looks fine apart from thin white keylines around the text boxes! Am missing something here but dont know what! Help!

Sounds like you’re using Preview on your Mac instead of Acrobat.
Preview can’t handle advanced PDFs.

The numbering in (Contents) format keeps changing when making PDF's from Word 2007 ? Using Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.

The issue is that I have made up a contract in Word.

As a debugging step, try printing to the Adobe PDF printer. If that fails, repeat with print-to-file selected. Assuming the print succeeds, open the file in Distiller to complete the creation of the PDF. If you get the PDF, then check to see if AcroTray is properly working as a background task.

  • Fonts not embedding when making PDF from PM 7.1

In making a PDF from a PM file, I am having trouble getting the fonts to embed.  The interesting thing is that the fonts that are not embedding are Times Roman and Arial; other fonts are being embedded.  These fonts are installed and I have the "Embed Box" checked in the job type font options.
I'm using Windows XP SP2 OS and Acrobat 7.0 Pro.
Should the fonts be in a special folder ? Not sure what I'm mimssing here . . . .
I had SP3 installed for the OS and was having no trouble . . . . but then InDesign CS2 would not open PM files . . . At your recommendation I uninstalled SP3 but had to reinstall the OS which meant reinstalling PM and In Design CS2.
    Any suggestions?

PM7 will run just on WinSP3 provided it's a clean install. That is, you install WinXP SP2, clean, straight the setup disk, and then apply the service pack 3 update.  The usual problem is the unnecessary junk which Windows collects which screws things up.  See here: PM7 and WinXP SP3
I've now moved onto the Win7 and not even bothered with PM7, so I'm going on memory.
If InD CS2 says your PM files are corrupted, then I'd be worried.  It's time to run diagnostics and make sure you have backups.
Re:  the fonts, I suggest you check all your style palettes.
You could just create a PS file using any PS printer driver with the output as FILE:, and the load Distiller, input the PS file and create the PDF.  That's about as fool proof as it gets.
Also see my now ancient trouble shooter about creating PDFs using the Export… AdobePDF… macro here: Installing and Setting Up PM7's Export… Adobe PDF… using the “Application” CD-ROM   In this cae, make sure you are running PM7.01a - the update is here: PageMaker 7.0.1 update - English as there were some glytches when creating PDFs in the earlier macro.

  • Pagination Incorrect When Making PDF from Word

When making a pdf from Word using the "Fully Functional PDF" setting in Acrobat 8 Professional, I often get incorrect Acrobat pagination that changes to "1 of 1," 2 of 2," etc. instead of "1 of 2," 2 of 2."  Typically, I download both Acrobat and Windows updates, but today that did not help. The only way the pdf pagination is correct is if I choose the "Quick and Simple PDF" selection, but the graphics display is not satisfactory.
So my workaround today was to hard number the document. Anyone else have this problem? This has been an annoying and intermittent problem since we upgraded to MS Office 2007.

I suspect that you will find the same behavior if you print to paper (worth trying for a few pages). If so, then you are looking at a WORD bug. I know that one version of WORD had such a bug. But then, it also seems that MS put some hooks in the process for PDF creation, but that is only a conjecture. Anyway, be sure you have updated WORD. Acrobat does not change things, but gives you what was sent to it -- the reason I would strongly suggest this is probably a WORD issue. However, I rarely claim it says there is a bug in WORD, just highly likely.
This has been reported before and I think the update was the solution. You might want to do a bit of searching.

  • Marking words with background colour, the colour disappears when making pdf. How to do?

Hi, I am working with a project that needs to highlight certain word or phrases with different colours. I use the background colour option to do this, but when making a pdf, the colour disappears. How do I get this to work? FM10 unstructured.
    JW

Unfortunately, this doesn't work in FM10 (or 11) using the CMYK settings - you have to use RGB and convert the colours either in the PDF (with tools like Enfocus' PitstopPro) or during the postscript stage with a tool like PubliPDF (see: Grafikhuset Publi PDF for GPL licensed freebie version; usage details and other info is available at: Welcome to Grafikhuset Publi PDF ).
You could also try using the CMYK joboptions setting in the RGB mode to see if you get an acceptable conversion (however be aware that any graphics and images in the documents may be affected). You should also set GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK=None to prevent FM from trying to do unnecessary colour conversions.
The background colour feature works correctly in the CMYK mode starting only with FM12.

  • Spacing Issues when making PDF of HTML file

I am making changes to a website and need to convert an html file into a pdf file (for easy printability on the website). When I try to create the PDF file (in Acrobat) by opening the HTML file, it does not keep the same formating. Anyplace there is a picture on right hand side of the page, the wording to the left of the picture drops to below the picture and I need it to stay next to the picture.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

You might also have to change the paper size before you print. Keep in mind that HTML has a floating format and typically looks different on different machines.

  • Transparency issue when generating PDF from InDesign Server

    Hi there

  • Excel 2007 Formatting Issues When Making PDF

Running Excel 2007 on XP Pro. When I make a pdf file from an existing Excel file in Excel 2007 (originally created in Excel 2000), a lot of the formatting changes. Cells that were aligned to the center are now aligned to the top or bottom with no rhyme or reason.
I would hate to have to go through and fix all the alignment problems in Excel 2007.
Any suggestions or has anybody else had this problem?

Not so much Excel (or, at least not so much that I remember) but I've read a
LOT of messages about problems with Word'07
You might want to check and make sure you have all MS Office updates installed, to fix any known bugs... plus make sure your version of Acrobat is fully up to date

  • Indesign CS3 crashes when making pdf

I had this problem 2 months ago, and I thought it was fixed, but it's started happening again. When I try to export a file as a pdf, InDesign CS3 will crash/close the program. However, I CAN export pdfs in CS. It also crashes when trying to import/place a pdf file or other type of file.
    I am using a PowerMac G4. Version 10.5.8.
    Thanks!!

    Dual Personalities, eh?
I'd tru running something like Cocktail or MacJanitor to clean your caches -- I'm on Windows so there may be a better way known to Mac folk. Emptying the temporary files is a good idea, but again, I don't know where they live on your system.

  • Font Problem with Embedded Images when making PDFs

    Hello,
I am revising a document I didn't create which has embedded images. Although all of the fonts are turned on, when I create a PDF, the fonts in the EPS come out as Courier. When I print to my laser printer, the fonts in the EPS come out correctly. This job will eventually be produced as a PDF, so I need to figure this out. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

We can't spend the time to retrieve the originals and distill them.
Yes, I understand that. I like to know why things don't work, even if it takes me a few minutes to test things. You don't have to retrieve any originals. Just unembed one from the ID file. I know it doesn't make sense to Distill all your EPS files when printing to PDF is going to take much less time. But if you can ascertain why it's not working, you'll have a better chance to fix it next time.
If the fonts weren't included in the original EPSs, why do they print to PDF in Franklin Gothic? This is true even in the one page document I sent you that doesn't have any styles.
They don't...unless you have that exact Franklin Gothic loaded on your system. They print in Courier here.
Your EPS file references a specific font name. When you print, your print driver matches up that reference with the Franklin Gothic font you have loaded. For reasons that I don't fully understand, when you Export to PDF Indesign is not able to match up the reference to the font the same way your print driver can.
Obviously, printing to PDF is a good workaround. And make sure you send your printer a PDF, not a live Indesign file.

  • Bookmark History When Making PDF

I have a document that I have imported formats into, but then deleted the ones that I did not need. When I make a pdf it still has all the history of all the paragraph formats in the bookmark panel. Is there any way to get rid of these?
    ls

Now my pdf is working correctly...for the most part. Don't really know why, didn't do anything different.....but all the old para formats are still in the "don't include" side of the "pdf setup for selected files window. (Sorry, guess I didn't explain bookmark panel correctly.) Yesterday I was having unavailable font issues and couldn't even make a pdf and it all of the sudden decided to work right....then everytime I would make a pdf, I would have extra bookmarks. ....still have that problem... but at least I don't have to delete all the para formats everytime from the "include paragraphs side".
We have been using Interleaf for years and are changing over to FM9. Guess since we are newbies, it will be easier as we go along.
Guess it doesn't matter that all those formats are still there....but why does it recognize that they were in the document, even after they have been deleted?
I have attached a pic of the window.
    Thanks,

  • Error message when making PDf

I am trying to export an Indesign document created in CS2. I have updated my software to OSX 10.5.4. I have opened a new document and clicked on print and then save as pdf prior to opening and trying to export my InDesign file. The document is 81 pages and it only gets to page 11 before crashing. I am desperate!
The error message is: The application InDesign quit unexpectedly. Someone? Anyone?

Are you exporting or printing? Are you aware that CS2 is unsupported

  • Crash when making PDF

I've got a file in InDesign CC 2014 and every time I try to export a PDF InDesign hard crashes. The file itself is about 60 pages but there are nine others in the series of documents just like it that don't have any problems. I tried creating an IDML of the file and exporting that and I get the same thing. The file itself seems intact in every other way.
I'd be grateful for any tips on how to diagnose and fix this issue!

The typical way of diagnosing such a problem is “divide and conquer!”
If you know what page the export crashes at, try isolating the problem to a particular page. Once you know the problematic page, make a temporary copy of the document and see if by removing graphical objects, one at a time, the export succeeds. Once you isolate it down to a placed graphical object, you need to see whether editing and or resaving that object, possibly in another format or with different parameters resolves the issue.
Good luck. This is not usually easy.

    Any ideas besides a reinstall?!

A web search for ntdll.dll says they are almost always caused by a 3rd party program.
If it happens right after you scanned something, it may be the scanner software.  Make sure it is up to date.
So make sure you video drivers are up to date as well as latetest verssion of PS.
Do you have any 3rd party fonts or plug-ins?  If so might disable them and see if it changes anything.
