Transparency question

I have a small image of a TV that is square but has a white edge.
I have used it in Photoshop and the edges that are white, that aren't part of the TV image was transparent. When I try to use the same image in Illustrator its white, and I want it to be transparent, not to have a white box with a TV floating in it.
I cannot figure out how to erase the edge or to make the white outside of the box transparent. Everything I try effects the entire image, and erasing doesn't work.
I know this should be so basic but I am at a loss. I am only so-so experienced with Illustrator.
Its Illustrator CS, running on a MacBook Pro, under 10.5.4.
Thanks

Hello tpearson,
No problem, this forum is for all type of questions.
What do you want to do is a "Mask":
Place the TV Image.
Take the "Rectangle Tool" and make a square or rectangle shape on top of the TV Image.
Cover everything on the TV Image you want to see.
Select both items (TV Images & the new Shape) and select from Main Menu: "Object" + "Clipping Mask" + "Make".
I am not sure if CS groups the items after that, but you may want to group them (so when you move one, the other follow) Main Menu: "Object" + "Group"
And you can try any shape you want to create a Mask.
I hope this helps!

  • A transparent question mark on iTunes icon in dock/ iTunes won't open

    Thanks for reading this and helping me--I have an iMac and a transparent question mark is in the middle of iTunes symbol in my dock. iTunes will not open at all when I try to open and there are no error messages.
    Thanks

    Open your Applications folder and locate iTunes. Drag it's icon to the doc. Drag the other icon out of the dock and it will disappear.
    If you can't locate iTunes in your applications folder, download a fresh copy here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • My iphoto has a transparent question mark over it and will not open. How do I fix this?

    My iphoto on my imac will not open. It has a transparent question mark over it...how do I fix it?

    Is the question mark on the Dock at the bottom of your screen? Then it means that the Dock can't find the application.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • HT1338 Updated my imac from 10.6 to 10.8.2 recently. My iphoto logo in my Dock has been replaced with a transparent "question mark" and I can no longer access my iPhotos... please help!!  Mark Howell

    Why can I no longer find my iphotos?  Updated from 10.6 to 10.8.2 recently... The iphoto logo in my dock has been replaced with a transparent, grey, question mark... why? How do I restore my iphotos?  Searched for them in Finder, and in "search"... they appear as text only.. but no photos.. please help.. Mark

    Have you verified that the iPhoto applications is not in the Applications folder or somewhere else on the hard drive?
    To do so download and use  Find Any File to search for "iPhoto.app" because FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't.  If the application is somewhere else on the HD FAF will find it.  However, I doubt that it will be there but it's worth a search.

  • Another transparency question. CLARIFICATION NEEDED

    OH experts -- you who are unknown and unseen-- please know you are so appreciated!!
    so, here's the question
    have master pages set up with a picture, a screen over the picture in a certain spot.
    on regular pages i place my text on that transparent screen. When printing from my small printer at home, my type & graphics are looking screened; less than 100% of their ink value.
    how can i get these graphics/type to be ON TOP of the slightly transparent layer and print 100%??  why are they printing less than 100% when on the screened box from the master page? a
    rent graphics on master pages underlying?
    do they affect the graphics on top of them in the regular document???

    thanks for the info. its hard to be exact in describing what is going on!
    But after lots of testing, i've narrowed it down to some sort of print/color settings within my programs AI & Indd -- not a problem with the files. SO -- FOR THAT i'm glad!
    illustrator and indesign are printing my colors in a very muted fashion. Not black, but gray -- and a screened back color for every color.
    other programs print pages fine -- dark blacks and vibrant colors.
    SO -- as long as i know its not my file --  I can at least get through this project. -- i have a long line of things to figure out when i'm finished!
    thanks for your ideas earlier; i'll keep in mind how to use the picture within these forums.

  • Overprint / Transparency Question

    Hi, all. I'm working on a logo which will need to be separated for 2-color offset printing.  To produce shading effects, I've created a solid black shape to which I've applied a black/white gradient as an opacity mask.  I've set this piece over an identical shape filled with a PMS blue.  The idea is to overprint the black ink as a solid-to-transparent gradient over the blue solid to produce the shading.  When I set the black gradient to "Overprint Fill" and view the logo in "Overprint Preview" the result looks great on screen.  The design also features a hard bevel, the dark edges of which are produced by placing semi-transparent shapes filled with black and also set to "Overprint Fill".
    However, when I go to save the file I'm presented with a warning about how using spot colors with transparency can "generate unexpected results".  In the save dialog box there is also a message that says "Overprints will not be preserved in areas that interact with transparency".  What does all of this mean for my poor little logo when it goes to press?
    Here's an example of what I'm trying to achieve.  The highlight is a simple gradient from white into the blue, but the shading is performed as outlined above.  Any insight would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    The way I understand it is he is using a Black gradient over Blue.  The White can be White, but in this case, probably 0% Black will work.  The Opacity Mask is probably considered "Transparent" along with the Black bevel elements, hence the warnings.  I wonder if those elements can be left without transparency and set to "Overprint Fill".  For instance, a 30% Black on a single bevel element could be set to O.P. with no transparency settings.  There will be no screen view of the effect, but it will separate as a 30% Black overprint.  Same with the gradient.  It will not preview with the effect, but will separate as a Black gradient set to overprint ( no Opacity Mask necessary ).  Or, keep everything the same except apply "Multiply" in the transparency setting ( along with Overprint Fill in the Attributes dialog ).  This gives you the preview of the effect, but the nagging warnings.

  • Powerpoint to pdf transparency question

    I have a powerpoint document that has several boxes with 76% transparency on the boxes (instead of 100% blue, the transparency is 76%). I put text in the box in (the text is 100%). When I create a pdf of the file, wherever I have a box with transparency, there is a "grid" that shows behind the box. I have tried changing several settings, but the grid is still there. Does anyone know how I can create a pdf file without the "grid"? Thanks

    Hi,
    What is the version of PowerPoint and Acrobat you are using?
    Please make sure that you have updated the Acrobat to its latest version. Go to Help -> Check for Updates.
    Also, try printing the PPT to Adobe PDF printer and then check the issue.

  • Knockout with Transparency Question

    Hi,
    I'm on a Mac, OSX 10.6.8, IDCS4. I'm trying to put a grayscale watermark of an image over a red background, with text above.
    Three separate layers. Top=text, middle=grayscale PSD image with some totally transparent areas, bottom=solid red background.
    The problem I am having is that if I lower the opacity of the grayscale image, it picks up the color of the red background. I want to keep it grayscale, but dimmed down. Is there an easy way to do this? I tried grouping the grayscale graphic and the red background, and clicking the "Knockout Group" box in the Effects panel. That didn't do it, besides it knocked out the entire square outline (much of which is transparent). I just want to knock out background behind the visible portion of the image.
    I could use the pen tool and create an outline of the image, then put pure white copy of this over the red, then make a black duplicate and place it above the white copy....lowering the opacity as needed to act as a background for the image, but what a pain. There is probably an easier way to do this with native IDCS4 tools. I just don't know what it is.
    Thanks,
    Lou Dina

    Thanks, Tman.
    When placing a grayscale TIF, I can lower the tint after selecting the image with the Direct Selection Tool. It does fade, as you say. If I lower the Tint to zero, the image fades to pure white and I end up with a solid white rectangle. Much of this rectangle in my original is transparent. I tried saving the TIF as a single layer (not a background) with transparency, as two layers (bottom layer with a white background, turned off), as a transparent layer on top of a white "background" (also turned off), with and without alpha channels, etc. As you said, if I use an alpha channel or CMYK when placing the image into ID, the tint feature does not work at all.
    Interestingly, if I place the TIF first, and THEN selecting Object > Clipping Path > Options, I can then select an alpha channel, it hides the transparent rectangle, but the slider works fine on the remaining image. If I invoke the alpha channel option when placing the image into ID, it doesn't work. So, that seems to be the key.
    I appreciate the help. I learned something.

  • Photoshop 5.0 Transparency Question

    Using CS3, I can use the magic wand to select portions of an image and delete them so they will be transparent. But I can't, for the life of me, figure out or find out how to do it in 5.0. Actually, I managed to select the portion I wanted to appear, and move it into a new file with a transparent background, checked the box in the Layers Palette to preserve transparency, and saved the file. I want to be able to insert the image into a Publisher newsletter. But when I tried to insert it, the file didn't even appear in the Open File window because it was a Photoshop .psd file. I had also saved it is a .jpg file, but the transparency didn't hold when I inserted it and then his Print Preview. Any ideas? Thanks! I'm really under the gun.

    Or the Mode for the Brush Tool was accidently set to Clear.

  • CS5 JS-Apply Transparency Question

    Hello,
    I am having trouble applying transparency to some ovals I'm creating with a script. I've used script in the past to apply drop shadows but this seems a little different. I'm trying to apply Feathering and Glows and I just can't seem to figure this out. The current script I am running does some basic document preperation and the ovals are going to be used by the person who builds the page. If you could help me apply the inner glow, hopefully I will be able to figure out the feathering. Thanks for any help in advance.
    The Inner Glow Presets:
    And the Script:
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;

    Hi
    I think you should use ObjectStyle!
    create an Object Style and set some transparency settings, and apply this to objects
    var my_obj_style;
    try {
      my_obj_style = myDoc.objectStyles.add({name:"inner glow setting"});
    catch(e){
      my_obj_style = myDoc.objectStyles.item("inner glow setting");
    with (my_obj_style.transparencySettings.innerGlowSettings){
      applied = true;
      blendMode = 1852797549/*BlendMode.NORMAL*/;
      opacity = 100;
      noise = 0;
      effectColor = "Paper";
      technique = 2020618338/*GlowTechnique.PRECISE*/;
      spread = 79;
      size = '0.125in';
      source = 2020618594 /*InnerGlowSource.EDGE_SOURCED*/;
    //Create the ovals and specify their size and location...
    var myLeftOval = myPage.ovals.add({geometricBounds:[2, -3, 2.75, -.75], fillColor:myDoc.colors.item("25% Black"),strokeColor:myDoc.swatches.item("None"), itemLayer:myDoc.layers.item("New Layer"),appliedObjectStyle:my_obj_style});
    var myCenterOval = myPage.ovals.add({geometricBounds:[3, -3, 3.75, -.75], fillColor:myDoc.colors.item("25% Black"),strokeColor:myDoc.swatches.item("None"), itemLayer:myDoc.layers.item("New Layer")});
    var myRightOval = myPage.ovals.add({geometricBounds:[4, -3, 4.75, -.75], fillColor:myDoc.colors.item("25% Black"),strokeColor:myDoc.swatches.item("None"), itemLayer:myDoc.layers.item("New Layer"),appliedObjectStyle:my_obj_style});
    I didn't apply object style to center oval, on purpose.

  • Compositing Graphics and transparency question

    Hi there
    I am drawing a floorplan on a jpanel. The floorplan consists of several "layers", meaning, I draw the floorplan and other geometrical things (representing real world things such a batch of plants).
    Those things drawn on the floorplan are partially transparent. I did this is to get a more intense color if some things are drawn on top of eachother. However, the background of the floorplan I don't want to see when those obects are drawn on a particular location. So for that reason I drew the background (not to confuse with the background of the JPanel) later with an AlphaComposite "DST_OVER", hoping that I would not see this background where the previously drawn object were. This worked partially, meaning, because those objects were semi transparent to begin with, I can see the background also.
    Does anyone know how to solve this?

    I think we're in agreement: try it!

  • Trying to import files with transparent backgrounds into Premier Elements 10

    I am struggling to import files from Photoshop CS3 into Premier Elements 10 and preserve their transparent background. I have tried .png (8 and 24 bit), .gif and .psd files. I have tried rasterizing the type layer before "Saving for web and devices" but can't get anything to work. The imported files end up as either text on a white background (.gif) or the file imports as a black background with no type visible (.png and .psd). I have read a few forums but can't find any suggestions beyond what I have already tried. I also get the same problem if I "Save for web and devices" out of Illustrator.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

    kaare
    You have brought up one very interesting maintaining transparency question which I feel goes more to the trigger on the
    Premiere Elements Videomerge pop up than to the Photoshop CS2 Save As with or without a check mark for Maximum Compatibility
    And, I find that Photoshop CS5.1 as well as CS2 involvement in this matter is the same.
    I created three 720 x 480 pixels documents, each with a blue colored circle on a transparent background in
    Photoshop CS2 and saved each
    psd with check mark next to Maximize Compatibility
    psd with no check mark next to Maximize Compatibility
    png
    Each of them was imported into a NTSC DV Standard Premiere Elements 11 Windows 7 64 bit project.
    Each triggered the Premiere Elements 11 Videomerge pop up.
    If I checked No for the program request to apply Videomerge, then all 3 results were the same, that is,
    the area around the circle was transparent and the circle was not...just the way it was created in Photoshop CS2.
    So, why was the Videomerge message telling me "Clip being dropped contains solid background color" when
    it had transparency represented by black and did not have a solid background color?
    Even more interesting was what happened if I selected Yes to the program's request to
    apply Videomerge to create transparency for what it claimed to be seeing as "solid background color".
    The result was the same for all three cases, that is, the inside content of the circle became transparent
    and the "black background" became a "solid color".
    Videomerge is not one of my preferred Premiere Elements options.
    To avoid the Videomerge pop up, I would suggest placing a check mark next to the "Do not show again.",
    followed by No in the Videomerge pop up. When you do, you should not be confused by the activities of the
    Videomerge pop up activities and you should have no problems with the maintenance of the Photoshop
    created transparency in the Premiere Elements project.

  • Transparent JFileChooser

    Hi!
    I have yet another "how can I make this thing transparent" question, this time for the JFileChooser. I've written a function to recursively iterate through its components and these are the ones I can find:

From what I can see it's some kind of JList but it doesn't appear in the list above. Is there a way to make this last part transparent as well? Can I somehow run setOpaque(false) on it too?

    Thanks for your replies!
    I realise now I probably should have put some more effort into this before posting. I've created an example that'll hopefully make things clearer.
    Maxideon: You're right, ComboBox doesn't become transparent, it did in my code because I'd set a custom ComboBoxUI.
    It's only the list of files I'm interested in making transparent right now, I've managed to get all of the other components transparent already. Here's the code:
    FileChooserTest.java:

        panel.setBounds(0, 0, imageIcon.getIconWidth(), imageIcon.getIconHeight());
        UIManager.put("FileChooserUI", MyFileChooserUI.class.getName());
        panel.add(new JFileChooser());

        super.installComponents(fc);

          if(comp instanceof Container) {

    Bonjour,
