Transparent Brush?

Hello everyone,
I know that there is a feature in Photoshop cs6 which will change your brush into a tool that affects the opacity of the layer it is used on.
That is to say, if layer 1 was all blue and layer 2 was all green, using this brush tool on just one small spot on layer two would make that spot transparent, revealing the blue layer 1 underneath.
I would like to know - what is this tool called, and how may I access it?
Please do not confuse this with brush opacity, which is affecting the opacity of the image drawn by the brush. I am looking for a tool which affects the transparency of the layer it is draw onto. I am sure this feature exists, as my university tutor has used it, but I had forgotton how to access it.
Thank you in advance

In the option bar, set the brush Mode to "Clear". You can also use the Brush option for the Eraser tool.

  • How do I completely remove a background from an image & keep it as a .jpeg?

Hi , I already know how to remove backgrounds from images, and create a transparent background.  However, I need to be able to use the resulting image in another program  called Scratch.  And as far as I know, it does not accept  .tiff, .pgn, .psd or gifs.
How do I completely remove that background so that it doesn't show up white in other programs when I save it as a .jpeg?

Jpgs don't support transparency.  It looks like Scratch may support pngs and other formats, but the transparency may not come through.  From what I've read, you may have to use the transparency brush in Scratch to achive what you want.

  • Need to manually convert an illustrator eps file

I have a logo file (eps) that was created in illustrator CS2... I need to open it using illustrator 10. I tried manually editing the header information of the file (changing creator version from 12 to 10, etc), but it still won't open the file.
What do I need to change in the file to get it to open? It's just a simple logo... one color, no fancy effects like transparency, brush styles, etc. (no effects at all, actually). I thought an eps is an eps is an eps... why is this not true? What's so special about the illustrator CS2 eps that makes it incompatible with illustrator 10?

It's always a good idea to supply platform and AI version info.
How are you "converting" the file? Are you choosing "Save As" and selecting PDF from the file format options? This will bring up additional save options. I would suggest "Illustrator Default" setting unless you have specific needs.

Yes, Apple are simply not providing any productivity software on the new iMacs, neither AppleWorks or iWork.
    WHAT A DISASTER !!!
Why? You own a copy of AppleWorks. Just transfer to a new iMac if and when you get one.

No. It works on the new iMacs. It's just not bundled with them.

  • Healing brush is semi-transparent

    I have Windows XP, sp2, Photoshop CS3.
When I drag the healing brush over a section I want to heal, the sampled color looks just fine, but when I release the mouse button, the area turns semi-transparent instead of keeping the full color. I thought there was a problem with my transparency setting, but I can't seem to find where to view that, and I don't think this is the issue. If I drag the brush over the same area a few times, the area does not become more opaque.
Perhaps I should mention that I usually use the brush to repair the borders of lines that are too indented to fix with the smudge, and I need to fill out the line a bit; the designated healing area usually has a background that has been made transparent with the eraser tool.
Thank you so much for any help anyone can give me, I really appreciate it!

The healing brush samples pixels of the surrounding area to be fixed. In areas where adjacent areas are different from target zone you can run into problems. Like OldBob says the clone stamp may work better as one can pick the area you are cloning from easier.

  • How to turn off the brush transparency view when resizing the brush on CC?

So, when Adobe introduced the "brush preview" when using the Control+Option drag to change the brush size/hardness (not sure if it's called this way), I was ecstatic! It made my workflow much faster without having to go to the menu to change the brush size or to the bracket keys. Now on CS6 they added a feature that basically broke that for me. Now it not only shows the size/hardness, but it also shows the transparency. It  sounds like a great idea, and it is when you work with bigger opacities, but I work a lot with opacities below 10% and it basically becomes invisible, so it's hard to know if I'm using a hard/soft brush when adjusting the brush size. Is there a way to turn just the transparency preview off?
    Thanks!

OK.  Looks like it is me that is confused, but I thought it should have been Cmd plus Option, but Jullieanne Kost mentiones Control Option in this post
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2012/07/changing-the-brush-opacity-in-photoshop-cs6.html
Which points to this old thread where we discussed the feature about 18 months ago
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4288146#4288146
So other than changing the HUD setting in General Preferences, there does not appear to be a really nice solution.  Noel points out that it should be doable, and I agree that it would be nice.  It is kind of ironic that we have reached a state where even keyboard shortcuts are too clunky to use, but the mouse option is such a nice feature, it would be great to extend its functionality.

  • Eraser tool in Photoshop CS4 acts as if it is transparent when on brush or pencil mode. Block acts like its not transparent at all but there are no options for opacity, flow or brush size. Whats wrong and how to I make the brush and pencil eraser erase co

Eraser tool in Photoshop CS4 acts as if it is transparent when on brush or pencil mode. Block acts like its not transparent at all but there are no options for opacity, flow or brush size. Whats wrong and how to I make the brush and pencil eraser erase completely without having to go over it multiple times?
It started randomly about two weeks ago and I thought it was a glitch that would just go away. But now I am getting sick of using only the block eraser on one size. Help?

The easiest thing to start with is to reset the Eraser Tool.
Right click on the Eraser icon in the tool options bar and then click on Reset Tool.

  • Lowering brush transparency in Quick Mask Mode

Using Quick Mask mode to add to a selection and to remove parts, how is lowering the transparency of the paint brush useful? I tried it and it seemed to make less of a selection, though I'm not quite sure why you would do this?

For example for the edges if you want to make a very soft/blurry selection.
By the way: With »transparency« do you actually mean »opacity« or »flow«?

  • PSE7 suddenly won't allow me to use the brush tool on anything but transparency

I was just doodling when the brush tool suddenly stopped working. After a bit of inspection, I found it would only let me draw on transparent areas. What's the fix for this?

Your brush mode in the tool options bar might be set to Behind.
The default brush mode is Normal.

  • When brush overlaps itself it creates unwanted transparency.

When I draw with a brush that is scribbly and overlaps itself, areas where the stroke is overlapping becomes transparent and other areas where there shouldn't be any stroke are colored in. I'm not sure why it's doing this or how to fix it, but the idea of going over every area like this in my document and filling it in by hand sounds like a terrible solution.
Has any one else had this problem?

The Brush artwork does not have to be a compound path for this to occur. The even/odd and non-zero fill rules apply to simple paths, as well.

  • Brushes transparency

I don't seem to be able to get transparency on my brushes. Transparency still seems to work on layer styles etc, but not on my brushes. For instense when adding smoke or similar to my work through brushes smoke comes over as a solid instead of being partly transparent.
Hope this enough information. i am still on CS5
    Many thanks

The weird thing I find now looking into my brushes palet, there are are no brushes with soft edges available at all, including the Adobe standard round brushes. Just black dots with hard edges.
    Thanks for the reply

  • Illustrator CS5 - remove calligraphy brushes transparency

    Hi!
When I draw a path and use a calligraphic brush (like Calligraphy 1) as the stroke the line gets set with a transparency but in the Stroke Opacity panel it
is at 100%. If expand the appearance, then the line will be filled correctly, but I want to preserve just the line with the stroke and the calligraphic brush.
I looked in all the options, the brushes options, etc, and I found nothing. The thing is that does not happen with other non calligraphy brushes (like the normal brush, or others...)
    Any clue?
    Thanks!

    It could be a bug.
No, it's normal behavior. If the objects were set to be semi-transparent when the brush was created, then the brush itself would still register as 100% opaque. It's the brush opacity, not the opacity of the internal objects.

  • Adobe CC Brush Transparency Issue

I've been getting an issue where my main brush in Photoshop is causing really weird side-effects when I'm drawing and when I go to save it. I've used Photoshop before, but never have I ever seen an issue like this.
Here's what is looks like in Photoshop:
And here's after I save it:
I just looked at it on different monitors and it is producing different results, however I can see a distinct difference between picture A and picture B.

I do apologize. The issue was NOT inside Photoshop. Basically it seems as though the transparency and the spacing is none consistent with what I've been used to, and then when I saved the .png the image looked fine.
Anyway, the screen profile was EXACTLY the issue and has fixed it up! Thank you very much!

  • Many brush and artistic filters don't handle transparent pixels

I had made some text, then rasterized it and I was going to apply the sprayed stroke filter to rough it up, but it doesn't do anything.  Seems this filter (and several others) can't alter a layer's alpha (transparency) channel.  Is that supposed to be the case?  I would've expected it to treat the alpha channel the same as the color channels.  I don't have the channel transparency locked.  There are workarounds for this, but I wondered if maybe anybody else had encountered this and knows if I'm doing something wrong.
    Bart

Yeah, a lot of the older artistic filters don't handle transparency, or CMYK, or 16 bit/channel, etc.

  • I just finised with brush tool and eye driopper earsing part of the backgorund and adjusting ther rest of the image.  I now want to take the image make it transparent and incert it into another file with only parts of this file showing through.  Any sugge

As, we can all see I have been working for so long I can no longer spell therefore please forgive my errors

It sounds like he simply wanted to select an element in one document and copied it over to another document.
One suggestion I can give: Step away from the computer every once in a while. It's not healthy to just sit there for hours on end. Get up for a few minutes every so often.
