Transparent objects cause fuzziness in PDF's from Pages

Hi, having trouble with objects that have some transparency. When going to PDF's, or even to PS files and then PDF's, the objects cause anything near and under them to become fuzzy. Has anyone a fix or workaround to this, other than not using objects with transparency? Thanks in advance - Tim L.

Some additional input... it seems it's not the transparency, but drop shadows that are causing this. It may be the combination of drop shadows on graphics that also have transparency. In any case, turning off the drop shadows makes the PDFx output look OK and not have adjacent text fuzzy. The graphics look better with drop shadows - but the drop shadows cause other problems with transparent graphics and adjacent text. Solution - don't use drop shadows in this case.

  • Troubles with Pages-impossible to send a pdf doc from pages

Hi, I am having troubles in sending a pdf doc from pages to a pc (via email). It work fine with word doc but not pdf. When I open the email with the pdf doc I just received, the email is empty. What could I do? Please help, I really need pdf! Thanks.

    Hi Jerry,
I don't think so, because I can send a word doc but not a pdf?! And my gmail account has plenty of space...  And it worked fine before I upated the new version of Ipad.  I hope I can find a solution, otherwise I can't use Pages anymore. Any other apps equivalent to Pages?
    Thanks anyway.

  • Print transparent object in Word to pdf and then to printer ugly.

    Dear All,
I have a Word document in which I have a bitmap figure. Over this bitmap I have drawn a green 50% transparent rectangle. When printing this directly from Word to the printer everything is fine, if I print it first to a pdf using Acrobat I get a pdf that looks allright (the transparency is simulated by a very fine checker board pattern) but when I then print this pdf to my printer I get interference in the transparent region, which makes this unusable. My guess is that the printer is trying to print this fine pattern and fails. The solution would be that when printing to a pdf the pdf should contain a transparent rectange instead of a checker board pattern.
Is there anybody with the same problem or someone who knows how to solve this? Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Vincent

    Problem solved!!
Besides the large bitmap I also had an Excel graph pasted into my Word document. This also gave problems. The solution was to shrink the size of the bitmap by first croping it and that pasting it into the Word document, and the graph from Excel has the be pasted as Windows metafile picture. Then using the PDF button in Word creates a pdf with the correct transparency objects. I cannot print the pdf right now because my printer is down but I have no doubt it will work.
    Thanks a lot!!

  • Can't crop PDFs exported from Pages anymore

    Dear all,
first of all: I'm aware that the issue is not truely a Pages one, but it's related and I think the right people for an answer follow this forum.
Short history: All starts with the problem that Pages somehow defines a minimal page size, often larger than the figures I'm creating for my thesis are. The usual workflow so far was: Export to PDF from the Pages print dialogue; open resulting PDF in Preview; make and copy the figure part; in Preview create new PDF from clipboard.
Recently, I switched to using the Abracadabra quartz filters to export PDFs from Pages, to get better quality shadows, which seems to work fine. However, now the above workflow does not work anymore. After copying the selection in the resulting PDF, the new PDF from clipboard still has the same paper dimensions as the original, not as the selection. I also tried Skim in any way, no success so far.
Does somebody have an idea? Thanks!
    Oliver

    1. You do not need to flatten transparency while you are setting up the design space and populating it with graphic data, only when you save to ISO 15930 PDF/X-3 or ISO 19005-1:2005 PDF/A. Transparency was first supported in Apple QuickDraw GX in 1994, in Apple Quartz in 2000, and in Adobe PDF 1.4 in 2001. Adobe PDF 1.3 and Adobe PostScript level 1, 2, and 3 use an opaque imaging model.
    1. You need to think about whether you want your typography to be searchable if you plan to distribute your thesis for paper-less publishing. Half or more of the glyphs in an intelligent font are presentation forms that cannot be directly depicted onto characters in ISO-IEC 10646. Presentation forms can be composed in Apple system type services, but they cannot be decomposed for search after saving to Apple system PDF services.

  • PDF export from Pages results in jagged fonts when viewed in Preview

    Hi There,
Since installing 10.5.5 I get the following strange behavior: When exporting a file in PDF from Pages certain fonts (such as Palatino) are not shown antialiased anymore when viewed in any Apple software (Preview/Safari). When viewed in Adobe Reader, the fonts appear smooth.
The strange thing is that, when I view PDF files generated last year before updating to 10.5.5 they still show with antialiased (i.e. smooth) fonts in the current Preview/Safari.
It gets even stranger: When exporting the files as .doc into (the resented and ridiculously slow and memory gulping) Word 2008, and then converting them into PDF via the Print command, this phenomenon does not occur, i.e. the fonts look smooth in Preview/Safari.
I would appreciate if anyone had some constructive input to this problem. I would really like to be able avoiding using Word!
    Thanks much in advance!

I had the exact same problem that you were describing. I'd create a document in Pages '08, then export it to PDF and I'd find that the text wouldn't be anti-aliased in the PDF.
I was using one of the resumé templates that comes with Pages '08. The template by default sets the font size very low in certain areas of the page, as low a 7. I went through my document and bumped up font sizes that were below 9 and set them to 9. Now when I export to PDF the text looks great.
It was far from obvious to me that the font sizes were linked to the anti-aliasing in my exported PDFs.

  • Attach .pdf exported from Pages

I have a very specific problem. I understand the reason that Pages files cannot be attached in an email, but even the .pdf's or .doc's that I export via Pages cannot be attached to my Hotmail account. They can be attached in my gmail, but I use my Hotmail account for all of my business communication. I also know that you can send them via the Share menu in Pages, but that doesn't create a local file on my HD, but rather opens up the Mail app, which I do not want to use with my Hotmail account.
Can I create a .pdf file from within Pages that can be attached to a Hotmail email, from the web, not through Mail? Please hel me out on this one....
    Some more details:
    I am running Lion
I am new to iWork, have recently switched from using Office.
The Web brower I am using is Google Chrome
    Thanks,
    Matt

Hey, I actually solved the issue.
Having discovered that the one non-Pages created .pdf file that I had tested to see whether it would attach before my original post was the ONLY .pdf on my computer that would attach, I did some more research. It turns out it has to do with the Microsoft Silverlight plugin. I disabled the plugin, and everything now attaches as it should.
Now if only I could attach files, AND watch movies on Netflix without having to toggle the **** plugin on and off....

  • Does anyone know how to deactivate a hyperlinks from a PDF exported from Pages?

I have created a pages doc that I needs to be exported as PDF. In pages, I all the hyperlinks are deactivated, but every time I export it to a PDF the hyperlinks are reactivated. Does anyone know how to make sure the hyperlinks stay deactivated once the doc is converted to a PDF?

If the links are spelled out (example:http://www.somewebsite.com) and not actual hyperlinks where the links are embedded under regular text, Reader will recognize them as links automatically unless the user has that option turned off (it's on be default). You can't keep that from happening unless the text is an image.

  • Transparency image causing fuzzy/dark text

When sometimes adding a .png or .gif image with transparency to a page, my text in the PDF becomes darker - almost like it's doubling up.
Delete the image, and all is well.
The odd thing is that this is only happening on certain pages.  If I remove some of the text, it's fine.  But after numerous tests I can't seem to pinpoint a particular problem with the text.  I've changed fonts, still happens.  Delete some text, it still happens...but the next time it might not.
    Thoughts?

Hmm.  That didn't work...but I did manage to isolate the problem!
I'm using invisible buttons (object set with 0% opacity and converted to a button) over text on the page.
Once I remove those buttons - or set their opacity to 100% - the text is fine.  Obviously a conflict with two types of transparencies?
Just converted the .png to an .eps in Illustrator and all is now well.
    Very odd.
    A bug, perhaps?
ps. This was for an interactive PDF.  The issue did not occur when testing to regular PDF.

  • Grabbing content from PDF exported from Pages

    Hi,
I have a number of reports that I have created using Pages that include pictures, text and bar charts. For the most part, I used the Graphs function in Pages to create these charts (as opposed to using Numbers and then copying in).
I exported these document in PDF's for my clients, but they would like to be able to select specific graphs to include in their PowerPoint presentations etc.
I have instructed them to use the Select Tool in Acrobat Reader (these are PC users), however the quality is AWFUL...very very fuzzy to the point of being unreadable.
So I have tried all these things:
    - Using Select Tool in Preview to select from a PDF converted in Good quality (fuzzy)
    - Using Select Tool in Preview to select from a PDF converted in Best quality (not much better)
    - Using Grab utility on document opened in Preview (maybe slightly better but not much)
    - pulling the bar chart into Photoshop first then pasting into Word (awful)
    - converting the Pages document into Word document (the worst ever)
The charts look crisp when viewed in Preview/Acrobat Reader, so I don't know why they won't copy better. If I select and copy the text boxes and the pictures (from Preview), they seem to be fine, so it is just the charts that are a problem.
    Any ideas?

The text and line drawings will be fine, they are generally not rendered, unless they overlap some bitmap material.
You can try simplifying the bar charts to basic line material, none of the fancy rendered versions.
You do not need to unshadow the graphs if they are upscaled, the shadowing is the same resolution as the graph.
I understand the scope of the work.
I just experimented with trying to print the graph to 400% to see if that would get around the issue and just hit an amazing bug. When you do that Pages shrinks the page size!
Apple catches you coming and going!

ps I have +Provided Pages Feedback,+ on this and suggest you do also.

  • PDF export from Pages fails "Print - error while printing"

Every month I have been generating PDF versions of my invoices by using the 'export' function of Pages. This has always worked fine without any problems.
Today (end of Feb 08), the pdf export function always fails with 'Print - error while printing". A pdf file is saved to disc but it is corrupted and unreadable. I can still export as rtfd.
I don't see anything about this in the logs, but I do notice that there was a Pages software update to 3.0.2 earlier this month.
Anybody know how to fix this?

    Hello
Before re-installing, it may be useful to
a - repair permissions with Disk Utility
    b - trash the preferences file: <bootVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.plis t
if it's not sufficient, try to print from an other user account.
If it works this way, you will know that the application's files are not the wrongdoers as every account calls the same application file.

  • How do I create a PDF document from Pages on my iPad

I have a Pages document on my iPad.  How can I convert this document to a PDF file and send it as an email attachment?
Pages Help on my iPad says, "Pages documents created or edited on your iOS device can be exported for viewing or editing in Pages or Microsoft Word, or Viewing as a PDF file, on a computer.  I can not find an explanation of how to do this.

So...there is no "Export" function in the iOS version of Pages or Numbers?  I've gotten used to exporting to PDF in that manner while using my MacBook.  If I have to go back to 'print to file' that is fine.  I assume I can then save it somewhere on the iPad?
No need to answer....see my post below.  It all makes sense now.

  • Fonts in PDF created from Pages doesn't present correctly on Windows PCs

The fonts documents that I'm creating in Pages and then converting to PDF, aren't presenting properly to people using Windows PC's. Some of the fonts are "wonky".
What I'm doing is creating documents in Pages and then creating PDF's either by Print, save as PDF or Share, Export, PDF.
On my MacBook and iPad the PDFs are perfect. However when viewed on Windows, they are wonky. Not all of the document/fonts are messed up. An example of a font that appears wonky, is Baskerville.
I've used Adobe Reader to check whether the fonts appear embedded, and they seem to be there.
This is a huge problem for me because, at the moment, all documents I'm sending to clients who use Windows, are looking really unprofessional.
    Any suggestions or solutions?
    Anyone else seen this?

Since the problem is to be seen in Adobe Reader for Microsoft Windows, you might want to ask a forum at Adobe.com. There is no way of knowing what you mean by 'wonky.'
The principle is that the scalable glyph shapes in the font program are subset and the subset of glyph shapes is inserted with the start point and the set widths that are used for drawing ('showing') the glyphs in the graphic co-ordinate geometry that you have defined in the document setup dialogue. There are two basic ways to embed Apple SFNT-housed TrueType (which is what your Baskerville is, if it is the one that installs with the system software) in Adobe PDF, either as several font programs each with a max of 256 glyphs or as a single font program within which there are several tiled font programs. Both are basically hacks, because Adobe PDF cannot contain the Unicode and TrueType glyph run complete, the way Adobe PDF 1.3 and higher can in fact contain the ICC ColorWorld complete. But that is a monster bug matrix that is beyond this discussion - only that you need to understand what you are seeing in the dialogue for embedded fonts shown in Adobe Acrobat products. That is, the fonts are always re-encoded and are never the original, intact fonts.

  • PDF exported from Pages (mountain lion) results in jagged font not smooth

    I am using Mac air mid-2012 + Mountain Lion (OS X 10.9.4) + Pages (5.2)
I used Arial - Regular - font 12 pt to write a resume. After I export to PDF the font on pdf looks anti-aliased, jagged not smooth on 100% scale. The font in Pages is ok.
I export the same file to *.doc and opened it with OpenOffice and export to PDF using OpenOffice, the font looks no problem.
I have the option "Use LCD font smoothing when available" option checked in system preferences.
Does anyone have the same issue?

This is a known issue in Pages 5's tables. Pages 5 has been out for 9 months now and there is no sign of Apple fixing the issue.
Use Pages '09 if you have it.

  • PDF made from Pages wont have commenting rights in Acrobat

I am sending documents created in Pages as PDF files to people with Acrobat 8 for their review. Both in Mac and PCs.
I would like them to be able to add comments as when adding an annotation in Preview but it appears that this right is NOT Allowed when using the document in Acrobat.
This happens when I export to PDF on Page and when I print as PDF.
    Any ideas?????

I would like them to be able to add comments as when adding an annotation in Preview but it appears that this right is NOT Allowed when using the document in Acrobat. This happens when I export to PDF on Page and when I print as PDF.
This makes no sense to me, sorry. I just dropped a scribble into a Quartz PDF on the desktop, opened it in Acrobat Pro 6.01, added a comment, saved back to the desktop, opened in Preview and there was my scribble and my comment. The people you are talking to may not know that to get the comments menu and toolbar in Acrobat you need to Control-click on the main menu bar.
The property of adding annotations is not a property of the PDF authoring application but of the PDF consuming application. Annotation is part and parcel of even the earliest versions of the Portable Document Format and is available in the first version of what was then Acrobat Exchange, the predecessor of the present Acrobat toolbox application.
Hope this helps (well, probably not, but still ...)

  • Create PDF Directly from Pages Panel

    Hi, everybody,
Can anyone help me locating a free script that allows to create single pdf pages (or range of selected pages) using the page thumbnails in the Pages Panel and choosing the function with the right button of the mouse.
I know it exists and its a free script. I have worked with it In IDCS5 but I have lost its trail on a computer that have crashed and I cannot find it anymore using Google.
