Transparent psd layers in Motion 5

Hello,
I'm trying to import psd-files into Motion 5. As I see in the layer list (sorry I only know Motion 5 in German), it works. I also see the small pictures in the files preview on the left.  Strangely I don't see them in the canvas. I see the borderlines around the objects, but every pixels of all the layers seem to be transparent. It doesn't matter if I import all the layers or reduce them to one - they are invisible. Other image types can be displayed correctly, but not psd.
Can you tell me what's the problem here?
Thanks for your help

usually I use RGB, but this time I used a fellow's files and I forgot to check that. Guess I will never forget that again Thanks for your help!

  • How does Motion Handle PSD Layered Files?

I've done an extensive search on the Discussions looking for an answer to my problem without luck.
I have a layered file created in Illustrator CS. I exported the file to Photoshop so that I could retain the layers. The file opens and looks normal in PS. I want to import this file into Motion 2.0 so that I can animate some of the layers. The PSD file is in CYMK mode as Photoshop will not allow files to be saved as layers in RGB. Motion allows me to import the PSD layered file as individual layers but all of the text and graphics come in yellow and seem to have lost their original color. I have set PS File Handling to Highest.. If I flatten the file it looks fine in Motion but I lose the layers. Does anyone have any suggestions or methods that could help me?
    Thank you..

I just created a RGB Photoshop file and added several layers, and saved it.
I used the import command from the File menu, and brought the file in with individual layers -- again saved in RGB.
Why won't your PS version allow you to save in RGB?

  • Transparency flattening - unwanted color added to transparent PSD files (IDCS3)

Recently (after switching to CS3) I began experiencing frustrating problems in relation to (what I think is the problem) transparency flattening.
The problem seems to evolve in the printing process where "something" messes up the transparency by adding a 1% (typically) magenta color to the transparent flattened image. (I´m using transparent PSD-files)
This means that the bounding box-area of the image is actually visible in print! I can see this on my own prints (tested on several in-house printers), but worse is that I´m having the same problem with the material I receive from the printing house.
    - When I check my PSD files in Photoshop there is no color but a transparent background.
    - In Indesign I´ve tried a lot of different output settings and job option files but with the same result.
    - In Acrobat my "output preview" measures no deviations, but when I (touch up tool > right click) edit image from inside Acrobat and the image file opens up in Photoshop the 1% is added.
For now I´m dealing with the problem by adding clipping paths to my PSD files which is a pretty untenable situation!
Apparently the problems seems to occur also on transparent .tiff filer etc.
I´m working in CS3 on OSX and I haven´t changed my workflow whatsoever since CS2.
The printing house is aware of the problem but haven´t experienced the problem before.

Sounds to me like an RGB/CMYK colour space issue.
If your image is in RGB but your InDesign document export settings are for CMYK (or vice versa) then you have Adobe converting the colours for you. Since there is a colour shift between the two colour spaces, you have no control over how the conversion happens.
In photoshop, "white" is not the same between RGB and CMYK and I often find there is 1 or 2% magenta in the mix (just as you're finding) when going from RGB to CMYK.
The transparency flattener function is pretty much the same as flattening the layers in photoshop - when it gets to the bottom layer you get one image with a box around it. the same in InDesign - everything that has a transparency (including images with no background) is flattened down on all the objects underneath to create a single image. If the transparent object is just on the paper then it gets a white box around it.
I suggest you check that your images are converted to CMYK in photoshop, and that your PDF export settings in InDesign convert all colours to CMYK. then ensure you use the High Quality in the transparency flattener settings.
    Good luck!

  • Mangled Menu. PSD layers EXPLODE when copied and pasted.

I make a menu in Photoshop (DV Widescreen - I've tried numerous formats) and I make a DV NTSC 16x9 sequence. If I import the PSD file and drag the whole thing into the timeline it looks perfect. If I copy certain layers and try to paste them into my DVD menu sequence the PSD layers just explode. The size explodes, the position is way off.
    WTH is going on?

In previous version of FCP (before I HD was standard) I could import PSD files with dozens of layers. I could open the PSD sequence, select whatever layers I wanted and paste them into other sequences. The layers would keep all their attributes and positions relative to the original document. This made it very easy to create motion menus for DVD SP. Now when I try the same thing the layers go freaking nuts.
I can see just fixing the file in PSD would solve the problem but if I'm creating numerous menus with slight variations, I need a PSD file for each menu instead of a master PSD file with the elements for all the menus. Minor I suppose but it just seems counter intuitive to have the layers to lose all their scale and position attributes just because they were pasted into a different sequence.
Does this not seem odd to anyone or am I on crack? Or am I missing some obvious setting or aspect ratio?

  • How can I place a transparent psd into Illustrator CS4 without effecting my spot colors?

So, I'm very naive about printing processes and am working with an online book building company. I've asked them how I need to fix this, but don't expect great advice from their design team.
When saving in Illustrator, I've been receiving the error:
"When spot colors are used with transparency, changing them to process colors outside of illustrator can generate unexpected results."
This effected the printing because it left a halo in the shape of the placed transparent .psd. So I need to know how to flatten the transparent psd or something in order to not have it effect the colors below it.
    Thanks!

Thanks Monika and John. I've been working in Spot colors simply because my client has limited my palette for the screen printing we've been doing on ceramics in the past. Now we want this book to match the colors on the ceramics. But if Pantone bridge back to CMYK would work, I'll do it. I have been saving to PDF by making a combined pdf directly from the .ai folder. My links are all embedded.
Is there a way to convert all the colors in the document to CMYK at once? Otherwise I'm looking at a very long week.

  • Accessing multiple PSD layers in Adobe Photoshop Touch from Creative Cloud is important to me.

Accessing multiple PSD layers in Adobe Photoshop Touch from Creative Cloud is important to me. When will Touch be updated with this function? Want the ability to view multiple layers the same way Creative Cloud website can. Having the ability to turn multiple layers on an off in Touch from and uploaded PSD file. As it stand Touch flattens imported Layered PSD files. (Not very useful)

    Hi Bford225,
I moved your post over to the Photoshop Touch forum because it seemed mostly about Photoshop Touch.
Currently, I'd recommend converting RAW images to Jpeg in either Photoshop or Lightroom and then uploading them to Creative Cloud for working with them in Photoshop Touch. I know raw support is something our developers are considering so please add your vote here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/ideas/1227
How you best incorporate Photoshop Touch into your workflow is hard to say. What works best for one person may not be true for everyone. Photoshop Touch obviously doesn't have all the capabilities of its desktop counterpart but it does have the ease of use and portability of being on a tablet. Personally, I like using Photoshop Touch for editing images taken with the iPad or my iPhone for convience versus transferring to transfer to the computer, or even if I still do, I can do some of the initial edits from the tablet first. Its nice when I only have the tablet available and not a computer. For images I take with my DSLR I always do my editing in Photoshop and Lightroom. I'm able to make any adjustments on the computer much faster than on a tablet.
If you have the option to shoot in both Jpeg and RAW that might be good option (best of both worlds). Do you have the ability to import images from the camera without using a computer - using a camera connectivity kit or something like that? My recommendation would be expermentation, test out different workflows on the tablet and see how you like it and find what works best for you.

  • Reading .psd layers under OS X 10.7. in 64-bit app

    Hi,
I have an application that reads .psd layers content using old QT API (such a GraphicsImportSetImageIndex, GraphicsImportGetDataOffsetAndSize, OpenADefaultComponent etc.).
I need to implement my code to 64-bit application under OSX 10.7. Lion and because old QT API is still 32-bit only I can't use the mentioned API to get layers and images from .psd.
Could anybody advice how to replace old QT API on Lion ? Or, how to get images from .psd file other way than using old QT API.
    Thank you.

  • Opening PSD layers in the timeline.

I have forever and a day opened PSD layers in Photoshop by double clicking the graphic on the timeline.  Now nothing.  Haven't changed settings or preferences.  Not sure what to do.  Is it something obvious I'm missing?

    Michelle,
Your post is a bit confusing to me since you said; "I have forever and a day opened PSD layers in Photoshop by double clicking the graphic on the timeline."
The normal action when double-clicking a layered PSD file in the Timeline is that it opens in its own timeline since FCP treats layered PSDs as a nested Sequence.  They will not open in Photoshop as you suggest.  To get a PSD  to open in Photoshop, right-click on it and select "Open in Editor."
But I may have misinterpreted want you want to do ... did you really mean "open in Photoshop" or do you mean you want to access the individual layers of the file in FCP?

  • Psd layers expanding

I have a photoshop template for supers supplied to me by a producer which are scaled at 720x480 & positioned at the bottom of the screen. When I import them into fcp, they scale up to fill the screen & center. I have to resize & re-position every time. Is there a setting somewhere so that I don't have to do this? It happens with all psd layers, not just this particular template. Other gfx(tif, jpg, png) are all fine. Thanks!

There is a "do not scale imports to screen size" check box in the user preferences.
User Preferences>Editing - uncheck "Always scale clips to sequence size".

  • PSD layers won't be transparent

    Hi,
Running FCE 2.0.3 and Adobe Photoshop CS. I've saved images with multiple layers as PSDs with layers. When I import them into FCE, they appear as sequences as they should. THe Layers appear as different layers in V1, V2 etc...
The problem is that the layers with transparent sections don't appear properly. The layers are cropped to the areas that are visible, but the transparent sections always appear black and so I have a black rectangle with my image in it.
Any ideas? They would be much appreciated.

I can't see what would cause what you're describing. Check that the PSD is in RGB. If it is could you e-mail it to me, or one like that that produces the same result.

  • PSD-layered - copy and paste properties to layers in Motion?

    Hi,
I imported a layered photoshop file into Motion.
I applied certain properties to one layer (with key frames, such as rotate, scale, shadow...) and I want to know if there is a way to copy those properties and paste them onto the other layers so I can then go in and do certain tweaks, without having to do each layer from scratch...
(This is something that you can do in FinalCut, copy and past attributes, but I can't seem to find that option in Motion.)
    Thanks

you can do this by selecting the layers with the properties you want, then in the inspector, drag and drop the parameters onto the the layer you want them applied to.

  • Can I export PSD layers to PSD files like I could do in ImageReady 2?

    Hi Folks,
I've been chasing this Layer Export Nirvana for a couple of years now but I've got nowhere.
In ImageReady 2 I could import a PSD file and export layers with exactly the name I used for each layer (with no annotations, prefixes or suffixes), with the entire file size (not cropped to the edge of the image) in a PSD format.
The script in Photoshop adds extenions to the file name that I can't see how to turn off.
I've tried a couple of free (SciptsRus) and commercial (Ferry) scripts but they don't seem to work with my version of Photoshop (Mac CS5 OS X 10.7.4). Is this a result of the recent Javascript updates with Mac OS X 10.7? I'll contact the authors of these scripts next and see what they say.
I tried a PC program called Super Layer which exports to PNG files and almost was what I wanted except it cropped the file size to the size of the image. I could get away with this I suppose if I copied a 1% single pixel into each corner of the file but that would be time consuming for all the layers I need to export (500-600) and means I'd have to rasterise the type layers which is also double handling.
I've even tried Graphic Converter on a Mac but can't get that to quite work. I end up with solid white backgrounds and no transparency.
All I want is to open a PSD file (preferably on Mac OS) and export each layer at the same size on a transparent background with just the name of the layer as the file name as a PSD file. I'll alos accept .PNG format as well as long as I get transparency and full file size. Just like we could do with brilliant effeiciency with ImageReady CS2. I've actually kept an old version of ImageRady on my PC for just this purpose but surely in the 21st Century there is a way around this?
Many thanks in anticipation for any help offered.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with some of the scripts. Normally this is due to the prefferences becoming corrupt. They can be trashed to see if all then works..
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
I have also written a new script yesterday that includes adjustments layers if the exist, so that may work for you?

    Hope it helps.

  • How do I import a pdf file with layers into Motion 5?

In earlier version of Motion, you could import a pdf file with all layers or even select layers you wanted to import. You did this by dragging the pdf file into the project and holding it until a popup appeard providing you choices for how you wanted to complete the import. In Motion 5.0.1 however, no such popup appears and it imports the file as a flat image file. Any ideas how to change this pelase?
    Thanks
    Greg

Thanks Ben & Praveen. In FCP7 It was possible to import PDF files and as you did the import, make choices regarding layers you wished to import. FCPX appears to import PDFs but only as flattened files. I'll try keeping the file in PSD format and importing as you recommend.

  • Psd layered groups

I'm using Motion 4 and PS CS5. I've created a psd with grouped layers. I want to import it into Motion with the groups and layers intact.
When I do File, Import I get the option to merge the layers, all layers or individual layers. In the individual layers list the groups are showing as layers and I get a few layers called </Layer group>. It seems that it's not recognising the groups properly. I've got a few hundred layers so I'd prefer not to regroup them in Motion.
I'm not sure whether the problem is PS or Motion - I suspect Motion as PS recognises the layer groups when I reopen the PSD.
Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks.

Since PSD's are a proprietary format, I believe Motion does it's best at importing them, but I'm not aware of Motion respecting groups from PhotoShop...

  • PSD Layers Distorted when Imported

I'm working in an HDV 24p sequence in motion and am importing layered PSD files for the project... If I import the layers fully merged, they are coming in fine (which is of little use to me)... When I import the layered versions, the file appears to be distorted with the top and right side appearing as though someone took the image stretched it and streaked it... any insight?

It sounds as if the psds are too large for the capabilities of your gfx card. How large is the resolution of the pics? Try sizing them down in photoshop.
