Transparent taskbar and other funny behaviour

Since I made a fresh install of SL my taskbar has been acting all funny. Sometimes my logged in user name is only "half" displayed. That is the name is cut right in the middle. These last days my taskbar takes forever to load upon boot and when it does it is transparent.
Any cache files or something I can delete?
Regards

I have a similar issue - using the included Vista Business-version that came with my T61.
Sometimes, it seems that the welcome/login-window is showing before the finger-print reader is ready to accept the finger, and hence logging in. Sometimes it doesn't work at all, and I have to log in by typing my password.
This is not consistent either - sometimes it just works right off, sometimes I have to try 4-5-6 times, and sometimes it just plainly refuses to accept the scan (and not as in it's not recognizing it - just doesn't do anything when scanning).
So, you're not alone

  • System Preferences can't set date and time and other odd behaviour

    I have a 2008 Macbook Air, which is beginning to show signs of age, but now appears to have taken on a terminal problem.  I can't set the date and time in the system preferences, even when connected to the internet - the pane just comes up as faded out and I am unable to do anything. The problem started after I accidentally allowed the battery to run down without having shut down the computer and it automatically assumed a date of 1 Jan 2001. I am unable to perform any updates on the machine until the issue is resolved, according to software update.
    Other strange things that have happened are that the trackpad no longer responds to the 'tap to click' function or 'two finger' click. In system preferences, I cannot edit energy saver, network (advanced) or account settings - attempting to do so brings up more faded panels or an error message after failure to load.
    Has anyone seen similiar behaviour on their mac or have suggestions as how I might resolve the problem?
    Thanks!

    If this is recent, what has changed since the last time D&T worked correctly?
    I see that your Question has languished for some period of time without response. You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. It is a relatively low traffic and inappropriate forum for your problem. I will ask our Hosts to move it to " Using iPhone " where it may get a more rapid response from your fellow users.

  • Tomcat and Mozilla funny behaviour

    Hi,
    I have a funny situation going on involving tomcat, mozilla, and internet explorer.
    I am using tomcat 3.3 to serve my pages.
    When viewed through Internet Explorer, everything is fine, and the pages format quite nicely.
    When I view the same pages through Mozilla, it doesn't seem to find the linked stylesheets, and doesn't attempt any formatting at all?!?!
    When I view the same pages through apache, both IE and Mozilla format correctly.
    So, any ideas why Mozilla wouldn't like Tomcat?

    I hate these kind of issues. It happened to me when changing .css contents and then trying to refresh. Mostly due to the unability to refresh contents on pages redirecting to other pages... no time to press the refresh button.
    I know it's a bad solution, but might be a good test and will finally discard a caching issue:
    Copy res.css to rescopy.css and change the link for that page in question.
    I hope it helps!

  • AirPort card not installed and other odd behaviour

    Sorry for the long post, just want to provide all relevant info.
    I have a first gen intel mac book pro 15" that has been working fine from the day I got it (well except for the optical drive, but that's another story) and today it decided to start playing up.
    I've tried numerous things after googling around without success. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me find a solution.
    When I woke it from sleep by opening the lid today, it wouldn't connect to the wireless network so I clicked on the airport button in the menu and there appeared the message "No AirPort" card installed". Then I noticed that the volume button next to the AirPort button was also greyed out so I looked at Sound preferences and there appeared the message "No output devices found". Sometimes the screen would not turn on after waking from sleep so I tried connecting the laptop to my TV (no other monitor around) to see I could get a picture without success.
    After a restart or two, the computer would sometimes not boot – the LED light at the front of the laptop would light up but the computer would not load. A couple of restarts by holding the power button down later, the computer would start.
    At one point, when I hooked up the power adapter while logged in, the screen turned off. I had to restart the computer a few times to get it to work again (both with the power hooked up and when running on battery).
    I did some googling and tried a number of things to try to resolve the issue without success. I tried the following:
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder. Apparently OSX gets confused with network adaptors sometimes.
    - repaired disk permissions
    - reset the NVRAM
    - reset the SMC
    - reset the PMU
    - tried running the hardware tests from the Snow Leopard DVD but my optical drive decided not to accept the DVD when attempting to boot from it (ie. holding the D button) even though it reads the DVD fine from within OSX.
    - i even booted OSX in verbose mode (cmd-V) to see if i could spot anything – didn't notice anything obvious.
    Not sure if this has anything to do with these issues, but I recently replaced my power adapter with a new one after the original one stopped working. I got the new style 85W power adapters after talking to the MyMac sales guy about which one suits my laptop. Looks like the cable got damaged over the years.
    Short of replacing the PVRAM battery in case it helps (apparently they last around 5 years), is there anything else anyone can suggest I try? or provide insight into the problem?
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks for your suggestion.
    One thing I forgot to mention was that I have a Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 and when I boot into Windows 7, the wifi and sound also do not work.
    Do you think it is an OS X software problem if I'm having issues when booting into Windows 7?

  • Uncommanded keypad inputs to iPad, and other strange behaviour.

    I recently downloaded The Planets and The Elements apps on to my iPad. Since then, on occasions the slide to unlock slider will not respond in portrait mode, but will in landscape mode.
    Id addition, intermittantly the ipad starts to respond to phantom keypad inputs. You can see the keys on the virtual keypad responding as if they are being pressed and the random input appearing on the screen. At times sections of tect will highlight and the copy button will flash.
    I have deleted the suspect apps, reset the ipad several times, and have done a full restore, but am still experiencing these intermittant phantom inputs.
    Has anyone else experienced this and how did you fix it?
    this may not be related to the apps mentioned above, but The Elements app was particularly bad, moving between pages at random and uncommanded.

    If you're still getting the same thing after Reset and Restore then, sorry, you've pretty much shot your bolt. Call AppleCare and start the process of swapping your busted piece of gear for a new one.

  • IMac Disk Problems; Won't boot and other bizzare behaviour

    Well I've been thru most that I can think of; My iMac won't boot. Problem with diskcorruption. fsck in single user won't fix, DiskWarrior stops at rebuilding directory, I have reset PRAM, booting to 10.3.6 stops at loading LoginWindow; DiskWarrior is been the only CD I've been able to boot with. I tried to boot with install Disks for 10.2 and 10.3 but as the boot starts these CDs get ejected. While in single user mode I can navigate around my filesystem except for my home directory; I get a disk error when I go there. Well it appears (1) to be a B-tree problem related to my home directory
    (2) but why can't I boot from install CDs
    (3) why can't I boot in safe mode?
    (4) think there's going to be any way to save my data?

    You can reset the PMU yourself. Only press it once. That may help you bootup on your install disk.
    As far as the corruption goes, If DiskWarrior can't fix it, nothing will. You'll have to Erase and Install. First see if the free demo of Data Rescue can see your stuff. If it can and it's important enough, you can buy the full version. You could also try hooking up another Mac in Target Disk Mode, and see if you can retrieve you stuff that way.
    This is the best way to Erase and Install. First backup all your important stuff, if you can, as the following will erase everything on your drive; it will be unrecoverable. Put your install disk in your Mac and Restart while holding down the C key. In Tiger, When you get to the install screen, don't click install and go to the title bar at the top of the screen and click on Utilities (in earlier OS's click on the installer menu).
    Click on Disk Utility and choose the hard drive you want your OS on. Then click on the Erase tab. In Tiger, click on the Security Options button near the bottom (it's similiar for Panther and Jaguar).
    Once in there choose Zero Out Data (write zero's in earlier versions). This will map out any bad blocks on your drive and bring it back to almost new condition (providing there's nothing wrong mechanically with it, bad bearings, defective or damaged surface, etc.).
    Once this is done, go back to the install screen and begin the "Erase and Install" installation. This will put a factory fresh system on a clean hard drive.
    Cheers!

  • Image transparency in 7650 and other s60

    I have a problem with image transparency in s60 phones. I have 2 versions of .png files. One I got from graphic designer with transparent background, the other is the same file, but I saved it in IrfanView, choosing the transparent background color.
    The former, looks nice on Nokia 7650, but seems corrupted on other Series 60 phones.
    The latter is OK on all Series 60 phones, but on 7650 where the image doesn't have a transparent background.
    Any of you runned into such problem yet?

    After looking around a bit, I found an add-on called FastestFox.
    You can find the add-on here: [https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/fastestfox-browse-faster/ FastestFox].
    I haven't done too much research to the actual add-on itself, but after installing it in Firefox myself and using the Facebook person searcher I noticed the images and also other things like websites loading a lot faster.
    I hope this add-on helps you.
    Edit: The add-on adds some extra options when you right click a website (to download things from the website). You have to decide if you think this is worth the extra speed.

  • Funny Behaviour (scrollpane and jbutton tricking me)

    Hi,
    I'm close to freaking out. I'm building a GUI that acts as kind of data base editor. There is a combobox to select a table, a scrollpane for viewing and thre buttons to add/remov/edit rows. My test data comes from a Properties object and is transferred into a TableModel in order to create and display the table.
    I pick a table from the comobox and the the table is displayed and the buttons are enabled. As soon as the mouse leaves the scrollpane and enters it or one of the buttons again the buttons become disabled and the table disappears. Picking the table again shows everything again, apart from leaving the add-Button disabled from time to time.
    There is a method that is called when the user selects no table but the initial "Select a table" item in the combo box. This method is NOT called (there is debug output to indicate this). There is no MouseListener or MouseMotionListener added to any component.
    What is this??? Why are sometimes only 2 buttons enabled instead of all three?
    This is the event handling code
    private void displayCategory(String category){
            // get category data
            Properties data = getTestProps();
            // create table
            ProfileTableModel ptm = new ProfileTableModel(data);
            ptm.addTableModelListener(this);
            // show table
            JTable table = new JTable(ptm);
            table.setSelectionMode(ListSelectionModel.SINGLE_SELECTION);
            ListSelectionModel rowSM = table.getSelectionModel();
            rowSM.addListSelectionListener(new ListSelectionListener() {
                public void valueChanged(ListSelectionEvent e) {
                    //Ignore extra messages.
                    if (e.getValueIsAdjusting()) return;
                    ListSelectionModel lsm =
                            (ListSelectionModel)e.getSource();
                    if (lsm.isSelectionEmpty()) {
                        System.err.println("GUI no row selected");
                    } else {
                        int selectedRow = lsm.getMinSelectionIndex();
                        System.err.println("GUI row #" + selectedRow + " selected");
            profilePanel.displayTable(table, true);
        private void clearDisplay(){
            System.err.println("GUI DISPLAY NOTHING");
            profilePanel.displayNothing();
        public void itemStateChanged(ItemEvent e) {
            System.err.println("GUI ITEM STATE CHANGED " + e);
            if (e.getStateChange() == ItemEvent.SELECTED){
                if (e.getItem() instanceof BoxItem){
                    final String cmd = ((BoxItem)e.getItem()).getCommand();
                    (new Thread(new Runnable(){public void run(){displayCategory(cmd);}})).start();
                } else {
                    clearDisplay();
        }This is the GUI code
        protected void displayTable(JTable table, boolean editable){
            addButton.setEnabled(editable);
            removeButton.setEnabled(editable);
            editButton.setEnabled(editable);
            table.setPreferredScrollableViewportSize(new Dimension(400, 330));
            scroll.setViewportView(table);
        protected void displayNothing(){
            System.err.println("GUI display nothing . . . . . . . . . . .");
            scroll.setViewportView(blank);
            addButton.setEnabled(false);
            removeButton.setEnabled(false);
            editButton.setEnabled(false);
        }Cheers,
    Joachim

    There is a method that is called when the user
    selects no table but the initial "Select a table"
    item in the combo box. This method is NOT called
    But this method displayNothing() is the only place where buttons are
    disabled (at least acording to the posted code fragments).
    How can buttons be disabled when this method is not called?
    You see, it's difficult to test your code because it is not a self-contained
    compilable example.
    A short self-contained compilable example often helps you and
    others to discover an otherwise mysterious bug.

  • KeyTyped Event: funny behaviour

    This should be a very simple question... but I am stuck with it.
    I want to implement the usual feature of enabling a button only if a text field is not empty. I suppose you all have seen this before.
    I am catching the KeyTyped event and in the event handler I am checking for the length of the text. This is the code inside the handler:
    String txt=myTextField.getText();
    myButton.setEnabled(txt.length()>0);
    So yes, it works, but with a funny behaviour: the button is enabled only after the second keystroke, that is, when the length of the text is >=2 and not >0. A quick explanation is that my event handler is being called before the event handler of the textfield itself so at that moment the text is still empty. But when pressing the "backspace" key... it works fine, so the theory is wrong!!
    My workaround is to catch the KeyReleased event... but visual effect is not so satisfactory, and anyway, why is this happening?
    And what is the "official" way of implementing this trick?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luis.
    (P.S.: I am using a JTextField and a JButton, and have tested this with JDK 1.2 and 1.4 with the same results.)

    You'd want to do something like this:
    JTextField watchedField = new JTextField();
    // construct the action
    FieldWatcherAction watcher = new FieldWatcherAction( watchedField );
    // make a button with the action
    JButton b = new JButton( watcher );
    // add a button to a toolbar with the action
    jtoolBar.add( watcher );
    // etc...
    class FieldWatcherAction extends AbstractAction implements DocumentListener
      JTextField  field;
      public FieldWatcherAction( JTextField f )
        super( "", someIcon );
        setEnabled( false );
        field = f;
        field.getDocument().addDocumentListener( this );
      protected void updateState()
        setEnabled( field.getDocument().getLength() > 0 );
      public void insertUpdate( DocumentEvent evt )
        updateState();
      public void removeUpdate( DocumentEvent evt )
        updateState().;
      public void changedUpdate( DocumentEvent evt )
        updateState();
    }The action would need to be fleshed out more, obviously. You'd probably want to add text for a label ( empty string in super call in constructor ), define the icon ( second arg in super call ). You can also set tooltip text and other things. All of this can be changed by editing various properties of the action. Relevant constants would be:
    javax.swing.Action.ACCELERATOR_KEY  // key accelerator for JMenuItems
    javax.swing.Action.MNEMONIC_KEY // mnemonic key for JMenuItems
    javax.swing.Action.NAME // JButton text or JMenuItem text
    javax.swing.Action.SHORT_DESCRIPTION // Tooltip text
    javax.swing.Action.SMALL_ICON // image icon for JButton, JMenuItem and JToolBar buttons.

  • Convert DVD and other video files for playback on  iPhone, iPod, PSP, etc.

    So, how are your holidays going? Or, if you're reading this on the weekend, how'd they go? Watching various sorts of DVD movies and videos is a better idea for a pastime during your free time. To make your holiday be more colorful with movies, I prefer to recommend an application to help you guys deal with different kinds of video resources, no matter the DVD files or footages shot by camcorders, or videos in formats of FLV, AVI, MKV, etc., in a word, the converted videos will be supported by whatever portable devices you have, including PSP, iPod Classic, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPhone (3G), iPhone, Zune, Zune 2, Blackberry, Nokia, Creative Zen, Sony Walkman, iRiver PMP, Archos, PS3, Apple TV, Xbox, iPAQ, Pocket PC, Mobile Phone, etc. The software is Pavtube Video DVD Converter Ultimate, which combines DVD ripper and Video Converter together, and enables you to edit and convert any DVD, video, audio and image files to other popular formats including MP4, 3GP, FLV, MPEG-4, AVI, MPG, MOV, 3G2, VOB, FLAC, MKA, OGG, WAV, AC3, M4A with super fast conversion speed and excellent image and sound quality.
    The detailed user guide will be shown in the following part:
    Step 1: Add video and DVD file
    You are allowed to add videos to this program via clicking "Add Video", and add DVD files to it via clicking "Load DVD". DVD files can be loaded in three ways: "Load DVD ROM", "Load DVD Folder", and "Load ISO/IFO".
    Step 2: Select output format and set destination folder
    Videos and DVD files can be added to this program at the same time, after that, you can click the drop-down list of "Format" to select an output format for your portable devices. The format profile provides you with formats for iPod, iPhone, PSP, PS3, BlackBerry, etc. Meanwhile, you can click the folder icon at the end of "Output" to decide where to save the output files. Moreover, if you want to combine multiple files to be a single file, you can tick "Merge into one file".
    Step 3: Set advanced settings
    If you have the needs of adjusting video and audio parameters to make good control of the output file quality and size, you can click "Settings" button to do it, and all the options like codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, audio channel, etc. are changeable on the following window.
    Step 4: Start conversion
    As soon as the above steps are finished, you can click "Convert" button to start conversion, the following ripping window will show you clearly about all the conversion info. After finished, you are able to find out the output files via clicking "Open" button.

    We're not supposed to talk about DVD conversion according to the terms of service ...
    So I'll assume these VOB files are from your HOME MOVIE DVDs you burned yourself and suggest the Videora iPod Classic Video Converter.
    http://www.videora.com/
    It's a really nice program that converts not only your HOME MOVIE DVD VOB files, but AVI, MPEG, and others. You can set the CPU usage from high to low with five settings, it has a queue which you can add multiple files to, and it will minimize to the taskbar for compact convenience. There are other Windows programs that do much the same, but I prefer Videora. Oh ... and it's freeware!!

  • How to Block Themes, Wallpapers and other Display Customizations (DPI, Scaling, Window Color and Appearance) with USMT 5.0?

    I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what.
    I've read some great write ups on the subject:
    USMT Custom XML the Free and Easy Way

    Blocking

    and used part of the XML in their example, but the wallpaper, themes and other display customizations are still coming over.  Now I'm trying to use MigXmlHelper.DestinationPriority() but really its just my last ditch effort.

    I generated a config.xml called nothemeuiconfig.xml and changed this:
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-themeui" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-themeui/microsoft-windows-themeui/settings"/>
    To this:
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-themeui" migrate="no" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-themeui/microsoft-windows-themeui/settings"/>
    But themes, wallpapers - everything - still come over.
    Opened a case with Microsoft, sent them:
    the XML's I'm using
    the command I used to generate the config.xml
    the command I used for scanstate
    the log files generated by scanstate
    the command I used for loadstate
    the log files generated by loadstate
    Summary result of the MS case:
    After much review & scrutiny, the command line and XML files are syntactically correct and rules are sound.
    The articles I referenced in the ticket are indeed old and speak of an older version of USMT, so I can accept the possibility that something may have changed between USMT versions that render those suggested rules & instructions invalid.
    Despite using
    unconditionalExclude to unconditionally globally exclude objects, something else is trumping that rule, and there’s no way around that.
    Even using
    MigXmlHelper.DestinationPrioity() won’t help us here because, like above, something else trumps that rule, and there’s no way around that.
    The last proposed suggestion is to disable the shmig component, which may or may not break or otherwise adversely affect the backup/restore of other things.  (This may be too difficult to detect easily or in initial testing and the uncertainty doesn’t
    give us confidence problems won’t arise as a result of this change.  Also,
    Ned Pyle's post post says NOT to, but then again that's an old post.)
    Is this no longer possible or am I'm just doing it wrong?

    Thanks for the reply
    TimAmico!
    I saw your responses on Friday & Saturday, but didn't reply because I wanted to think this over a bit and try to get a second opinion.
    The 'Appearance and Display' component looks to have a has a number of sub-components.
    <component displayname="Appearance and Display" migrate="yes" ID="appearance_and_display">
    <component displayname="Windows Games Settings" migrate="yes" ID="appearance_and_display\windows_games_settings">
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-GameExplorer" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-gameexplorer/microsoft-windows-gameexplorer/settings"/>
    </component>
    <component displayname="Taskbar and Start Menu" migrate="yes" ID="appearance_and_display\taskbar_and_start_menu">
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-stobject" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-stobject/microsoft-windows-stobject/settings"/>
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-explorer" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-explorer/microsoft-windows-explorer/settings"/>
    </component>
    <component displayname="Personalized Settings" migrate="yes" ID="appearance_and_display\personalized_settings">
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-uxtheme" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-uxtheme/microsoft-windows-uxtheme/settings"/>
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-themeui" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-themeui/microsoft-windows-themeui/settings"/>
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-shmig" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-shmig/microsoft-windows-shmig/settings"/>
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-shell32" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-shell32/microsoft-windows-shell32/settings"/>
    <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-CommandPrompt" migrate="yes" ID="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/cmi/microsoft-windows-commandprompt/microsoft-windows-commandprompt/settings"/>
    </component>
    </component>
    If I'm understanding the XML correctly, setting 'Appearance and Display' to 'no' will not bring over any of the sub components:
    Windows Games Settings: Microsoft-Windows-GameExplorer
    Tarkbar & Start Menu: Microsoft-Windows-stobject
    Tarkbar & Start Menu: Microsoft-Windows-explorer
    Personalized Settings: Microsoft-Windows-uxtheme
    Personalized Settings: Microsoft-Windows-themeui
    Personalized Settings: Microsoft-Windows-shmig
    Personalized Settings: Microsoft-Windows-shell32
    Personalized Settings: Microsoft-Windows-CommandPrompt
    If so, that, to me at least, represents a pretty significant change!  We want the pinned items but not the backgrounds and themes so that specific change won't work for us, but glad to hear it meets your needs.  (Also greatly appreciate your sharing
    your results with us.)
    I'll admit, even before reaching out to MS, the logs clearly show that the themes/backgrounds are all part of the 'Microsoft-Windows-shmig' component but dang it if I want something of substance (read: official documentation) that covers what exactly that
    component handles.  (I like to know what I'm potentially getting myself into.)

  • Things to know before building a Mega 651 (and other things you should know afte

    Okay, following hot on the heels of the "things to know" series on Mega 180 and 865, I thought I'd just chip in with this short post on what you should know before splashing out on a nice budget Mega 651
    PROCESSOR SUPPORT:
    The official list of supported CPUs can be found here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_slm_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=431&kind=4
    Basically the ageing SiS651 chipset does not support Celeron / P4 cpus above 533mhz, and does NOT support the newer "Prescott" core cpus
    Celeron > 400Mhz FSB
    P4 Northwood > 533mhz FSB (512kb L2 cache)
    MEMORY:
    Basically to add to what is listed in the 865 "things to know"; from my own experience of using MSI motherboards in the past, ALWAYS use good quality branded memory, as using cheaper "generic" types inevitably leads to major problems. I know for a fact that Crucial, Kingston and Samsung types work well in MSI motherboards, and you should be okay with other high-end brands like Corsair and Geil.
    DRIVERS:
    DON'T bother using MSI LiveUpdate! The drivers provided on the cd supplied will work, but if you wish to download the latest drivers, you will find them here:
    http://download.sis.com/
    Download and install the:
    Chipset Software > SiS AGP (Gart) Driver
    IGP Graphics Drivers > SiS650 and 740 series
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
    for Realtek AC97 Audio drivers
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?lineid=1&famid=3&series=16&Software=True
    For Realtek Onboard Network interface
    The modem drivers supplied on the CD should work, I really don't know much about them as I have never used them (sorry). Failing that, if you are connected to the internet, Windows Update should be able to find them for you.
    OPERATING SYSTEM SUPPORT
    MSI state that only Windows XP is supported on Mega 651 (and other Mega barebones). Other versions of Windows (98, ME, 2000) will work provided you have drivers for hardware devices, all of which are provided on the install CD or from the links supplied above.
    You'll find that earlier versions of Windows won't have the drivers for the built-in card reader, so you may have to do a "google" search to get them. On my Mega 651, they are listed in Device Manager as "OEI-USB" devices.
    If you haven't already got Windows XP then I suggest you consider upgrading at the earliest opportunity; Microsoft themselves no longer support Win 98 / ME and most new software is being designed to work only with Windows XP
    Please note that MSI do NOT supply or support drivers for Linux; if you wish to attempt to install Linux on a Mega 651 (or other Mega PC model) you will need to obtain drivers yourself. The remote and LCD display functions will also not be available under Linux, unless some clever bod has developed drivers to do so.
    MEGA RADIO AND LCD DISPLAY:
    Download the Mega LiveUpdate for Mega 651 from here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/software/swr/spt_swr_detail.php?UID=431&kind=4
    This will update your MEGA Radio program, update the BlueBird HIFi module firmware and allow you to set a "greeting" displayed on the LCD display when you switch on HiFi mode. Apart from that the LCD display serves NO other purpose in PC mode.
    After updating the firmware, you should power off your Mega 651, unplug the mains power cord for a few seconds then reconnect and restart for changes to take place.
    OTHER MSI SOFTWARE:
    If you REALLY must try out MSI Media Center III, it does work on the Mega 651, but I don't think the remote will work correctly.
    Although PCAlert 4 has been reported to work on the Mega 651 - having read the numerous problems most users have, I don't advise installing it. If you do get it to work correctly, unlike on the Mega 180 and 865, it will not display temps or fan speeds on the LCD display, as this feature only works on the 180 and 865, as they use diferent LCD displays.
    EXPANSION CARDS:
    Same as with other Megas, you get 1 AGP and 1 PCI slot.
    The AGP slot only supports up to 4x cards; a faster card will work, but only at 4x.
    Space is limited, if you decide to fit a PCI TV tuner card, you will be limited as to which AGP card you can fit. A full length card is probably not recommended, and a model with a slimline (or even passive) heatsink would be best.
    A better alternative would be to go for a VGA card with built in TV tuner, such as MSI TV5200-VTDF128 or an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder card (ATI AIW is supported in WinXP MCE05)
    ON-BOARD VGA
    The SiS651 chipset is pretty old now, and the on-board SiS650 VGA is not up to playing any of the latest games, as it is only DirectX 7.0 compliant and does not support Hardware Texture & Lighting. However, it is adequate for playing back DVDs as it supports hardware acceleration (in PowerDVD for example), and general video output is decent. The maximum shared video memory size is 64mb.
    The Mega 651 does NOT feature TV-out as standard. You can however either buy an AGP video card which includes TV-out feature, or the Mega TV-out card (availble in UK from www.dabs.com). Please note, this card is ONLY for Mega 651, and does NOT work with the 865 model. (The 180 does however, thanks to nforce2 chipset, support TV-out as standard)
    ON-BOARD AUDIO
    The Realtek ALC650 AC97 audio codec offers 5.1 surround sound (with suitable speakers of course  ) as well as SP-DIF for digital output.
    The sound quality is quite reasonable; i'm currently listening to MP3s through a set of Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers, and its certainly good enough for me.
    There are three audio connectors on the rear, they default to:
    GREEN - Front speakers
    BLUE - Line In
    PINK - Mic
    To connect surround sound speakers correctly, you need to use the Realtek audio configuration tool (located in the Taskbar by the clock). Set the speaker config to 4 or 6 channel (5.1) and then click on the boxes to the right to configure the rear ports correctly
    GREEN - Front speakers
    BLUE - Rear Speakers
    PINK - Subwoofer / Centre Speaker
    NOTE: If you do decide you want to install a PCI soundcard, be aware that you will lose the Radio function in PC mode, and for audio output in Hi-Fi mode you will need to reconnect audio plugs from your soundcard to onboard sockets. The Hi-Fi mode and Radio only work with the onboard audio.
    POWER SUPPLY
    All the Mega series barebones come with a 200w PSU. Don't even think about upgrading to a higher output type, as the Mega PSU is a non-standard type. A standard ATX PSU will NOT physically fit inside the Mega case. Besides which, the Mega series have a special connector which powers the Bluebird hi-fi module and on-board sound when the PC is off. And there is a special Molex power connector for the CD/DVD drive, also for that to be used when PC is off.
    WINDOWS XP MCE 2005
    Media Center 2005 requires a DirectX 8.1 / 9.0 compliant video card with a minimum of 64mb RAM, 128mb RAM is recommended, however, for best performance. So you will need an AGP card, because SiS do not provide any MCE-compatible drivers. The TV@anywhere TV tuner (MS8606-10) and Mega TV Tuner (MS8606-40) are not supported by MCE05, because MCE2005 requires a TV card that will provide a direct MPEG2 stream, which a PVR card such as the Hauppage PVR MCE series can do (as a hardware card, MSIs card are software only and rely on drivers to do MPEG encoding), or a dedicated DVB-T card which receives an MPEG2 signal over the air.
    MEGA 651 REMOTE
    If you fit an MSI TV@anywhere card to your Mega 651, the Mega remote can be used to control the MSIPVS software, providing you use the remote receiver supplied with the TV@nywhere card. The Mega remote is designed to work natively with the MSI Media Center, and MSI Mega Radio programs only.
    If you wish to program the remote to operate other programs within windows, then you will need a program called Girder, and the accompanying MSI plugin, kindly provided by nathan. please see his sticky thread for more info, about his plugin, and how to obtain Girder.

    If you just got it back and it isn't fixed or something else is wrong with it take it back and have them do the repair correctly.

  • Windows 8.1 settings window and other apps automatically minimize/cannot be selected.

    Whenever I try and change my settings by going through the usual charms menu-> Change PC Settings, the instant the settings window comes up it disappears. I try bringing it up from the taskbar and the same thing happens: it seems to maximize then just disappears. I can't switch to it, only close it. This applies to any app in Windows including Sports, News, etc.
    Thanks in advance!
    I'm running on Windows 8.1 and have a  HP ENVY dv6-7214nr.

    Hi Marhorie4,
    This is the command you should try to enter
    powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
    $EnvystemRoot\ImmersiveControlPanel\AppxManifest.xm
    The restore point was  safety precaution, so it something when wrong you would have a good restore point to return to. As you have one that was before the issue started, I would keep and use that one.
    Here is a link to a Window.microsoft.com answer to assist you.  Cannot use Windows 8 apps or get to PC Settings!
    If the issue remains, I would do a   Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).  This will reinstall the original OS.
    Now try doing your update again.
    Updating Windows 8 to 8.1
    If this has not helped I would do a full factory recovery.  Here is a link to System Recovery / Backup / Restore.  There are links on the page to guide you through doing a recovery and restoring your files if you opted to do the backup.

  • Transparent Tunneling and Local Lan Access via VPN Client

    Remote users using Cisco VPN 4.2 connect successfully to a Cisco Pix 515 (ver. 6.3). The client is configured to allow Transparent Tunneling and Local Lan access, but once connected to the Pix, these two options are disabled. What configuration changes are required on the Pix to enable these options? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Mike Bowyer

    Hi Mike,
    "Transparent Tunneling" and "Local Lan Access" are two different things. "Transparent Tunneling" is dealing with establishing an IPSec Tunnel even if a NAT device is between your client and the VPN-Headend-Device. "Local LAN Access" is dealing with access to devices in the LAN your VPN-Client-Device is connected to.
    What do you mean exactly with "disabled once the connection is made" ?
    You can check the local LAN Access by having a look at the Route-Table of the VPN-Client:
    Right Click the yellow VPN-lock Icon in System-Tray while the VPN-Connection is active and select "Statistics ...". Have a look at the second register page "route details".
    Are any local LAN routes displayed when your are connected ?
    And - always remember two important restrictions the Online Help of the VPN-Client is mentioning:
    1: This feature works only on one NIC card, the same NIC card as the tunnel.
    2: While connected, you cannot print or browse the local LAN by name; when disconnected, you can print and browse by name.
    Carsten
    PS: Removing Split Tunnel won't enable local LAN access as all traffic would be sent into the IPSec tunnel.
