Transporting an iWeb site to a different Mac computer

You were all so helpful with my last question...
I have been working on an iWeb site but have not yet published it (I don't yet know the ftp server address to which it will be published).
I can't figure out how to save it to a jump drive or move it from my external hard drive (where it is now) to a different computer.
It seems as though there is an option of "publish to a folder," (which I could potentially then move from the external hard drive to the new computer) but I'm reluctant to do that for fear of losing it altogether.
Any advice???
Thanks,
Lara

Hi Lara,
Easily done!
See these notes for instructions on how to edit and publish the same iWeb site from two separate machines.
Post back if you run into problems and everyone here will lend a hand.

  • How to edit the same iWeb site on 2 different Macs?

How can I edit the same iWeb site on 2 different Macs? I know we create a folder with the files, but when copying that to Mac2, iWeb on Mac2 doesn't see that folder - I can't see what the linkage is between the app's interface and the folder of site files....

The answer is Domain.sites (extension hidden by default). You'll find this on the Mac you used to create the site at Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Copy that file to removable media and drag it to the same location on the other Mac. Launch iWeb and you'll see the site structure in the Site Organizer.
Once you keep the Domain package in sync between the two machines everything will work smoothly no matter which you use. There's a neat tip here which may help in this respect, but you use whatever strategy you prefer:

  • Missing pages when iWeb editing on two different Macs

    Hi
I have an ibook and today I designed a simple iWeb page and uploaded it from work (it really is very simple).
When I came home is used my iMac to run iWeb (don't worry I have a family/5 machine licence) but nothing came up..
Is there no way to edit the same page and more importantly see the page in iWebs site organiser if the sites/pages are produced on different macs?

    Graham,
In order to be able to edit on more than one Mac, you will need to copy the Domain file that resides in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb. That Domain file contains all the elements of all of your sites that you have done in iWeb. It's not accessible online via .Mac like when using Homepage. So if you make changes from computer A, you'll need to copy that file to computer B before being able to edit the site. Then you will need to copy that file back to computer A so you have the latest version of your site.
This makes being able to edit ones sites from multiple computers a pain in the rear. I tried it today by copying the Domain package from my home computer to the G5 I use at work. I made one small change to the site and published it. However, I could not get the changed page to show. The old page kept coming up. I duplicated the change once I was back home and published. Everything was fine. I don't know what the problem was but if it is a consistent problem, it will make updating from multiple computers go from being a pain to being impossible.

  • Publishing iWeb pages from 2 different Macs

I have recently bought a MacBook to complement my G4 Powermac desktop - the desktop has iLife05 installed and the MacBook iLife06.
I am really enjoying using the iWeb application and would like to be able to publish iWeb pages from both my MacBook and my desktop mac. Is there anyway I can get iLife06 transferred onto my desktop. I have already been firewiring files between the two - can I do the same with software or do I need to buy iLife all over again?

    Hi James,
Your response definitely helped me since my boss and I are trying to maintain a website on both of our computers...
BUT, i have a huge problem. Before I knew how to transfer or find the domain files, I used the "FIND" option to search for the domain site on my computer and when i clicked it open, my site didn't come up but rather a prompt asking me what type of website I'd like to create. For months, the website we created showed up every time I opened iweb but now when i simply clicked on domain.site or whatever it was that turned up in the "Find" folder, I can't bring up or locate the site I created on the computer so I have no way to update it or put it on a disc for my boss... Do you have any idea what caused my site to disappear simply by clicking on domain or any idea where i could find my site??
    please help!! thanks!

one more thing: is it possible for my boss to edit the content of the website without iweb? could she do it through the actual website with a password or something? just curious... also if i can't get that original domain site back, is there a way i can transfer my website to a different website other than iweb so that i can keep updating without having to redo the whole thing? even being able to transfer separate blogs from iweb to the original site would work too - anything to not have to redo the welcome page and picture pages that are already online

  • Editing an iWeb site from a second Mac

I recently purchased ILife 06 and have begun switching my existing web sites on my .mac account to be on iWeb format but i have a few questions:
    1. I published the iWeb site with my iBook but I also want to populate and edit it with images from i Photo on my iMac - can I work with two Mac's???
    2. My slide show pictures are very small on iWeb slide show compared to what I get on the slide show on my now old Mac Web page.Comments???
Thanks in advance for the help.

A slick way to do it is to store the domain file on a usb flash drive (stick) and double click it from there. That way you can plug it into whatever computer running iweb you wish and update it.
Always remember to back that file up no matter what you do. If you lose it for any reason it can't be restored from the published files.
    good luck

  • Sites created on different Macs

Unlike many here, I've had success creating quick, simple sites for various uses. However, some I've built on my Powerbook, others on my G4 at home. Although all are posted to my single .Mac account, I can only see the ones created locally on each computer in iWeb. Which means I can't edit any site not created on the computer I happen to be using at the time. Which seems ridiculous as the sites actually reside on .Mac, not on either computer! Any ideas?

Wrong. As far as iWeb is concerned, they reside in Users/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain on each machine separate. To edit a site made on another machine you need to transfer that file.

  • How can I upload my iWeb site to 2 different domain addresses?

I have two different domain names, but I want to publish one iWeb site to both addresses.
I can't work out how to do it, I was thinking to duplicate the whole site but using the other address. Then I would have to make indiviual changes to both sites when updating content etc.
There must be an easier way to do this, I am missing something?

Your info says you use iWeb 08.
That means you publish to a folder.
If so, iWeb is not involved. You decide what to do with the published files on the desktop.
With iWeb 09 you only have one FTP address. To publish to another server you have to change the publish info.
But everytime you do that, iWeb will publish the entire site.
You can't have both. iWeb was not meant for that.
Anyway, you provided the solution yourself : duplicate websites for each server.
There's actually no need to make the changes in each site.
Make changes in one site, and duplicate the page to the other site.
    Then publish.

  • Working on the same site on two different macs?

is it possible to work on my iWeb site from my desktop on my laptop?

Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual html files, but in a file called Domain.sites which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. You should backup this file whenever you make big changes to your site, because if it gets lost or damaged, you will have to start all over. If you want to work on your site on another computer, copy this file to a thumb drive to move it around.
I have an Automator app on my site that will help you backup your Domain file(s). http://iweb.varkgirl.com

  • Updating iWeb site from more than one computer

I have had an iMac for some time and use it to maintain an iWeb site. I just got a MacBook and would like to be able to publish to the site from either computer. How do I get my existing iWeb site into iWeb '08 on the new MacBook?

If you plan on moving between the two Macs frequently try using a flash drive.

  • How do I create two iWeb sites using a single .Mac account?

I would like to create two distinct sites/URLs using iWeb and a single — not a family — .Mac account. Is this possible? If so, what are the basic steps?
When I read related forum posts, it would seem to me that one site would overwrite the other site when I publish. Yes or no?
    iBook 1.2 mhz, G4   Mac OS X (10.3.6)
    iBook 1.2 mhz, G4   Mac OS X (10.3.6)
    iBook 1.2 mhz, G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   iLife 06

I would like to create two distinct sites/URLs using
iWeb and a single — not a family — .Mac account. Is
this possible? If so, what are the basic steps?
If you just do the obvious and use File > New Site in iWeb, you do create two distinct sites with different urls. However, you cannot exactly duplicate page names in the sites or publish changes in one without publishing changes in the other. The short default url web.mac.com/username/iWeb normally goes to the top site on the list within iWeb.
If you create two sites with distinct names in different accounts on your machine, they should not overwrite each other, and they should also have distinct urls. However I think that the
index.html file which tells browsers what to do with the default short url web.mac.com/username/iWeb may get confused, so that deleting that or modifying it manually might be desirable.

  • Podcasting on an iWeb site not published to .mac

Hi, I have created a website with iWeb which is hosted externally to .Mac. Everything works fine except I created a podcast (m4a file) which I'd like to include on my site. Can anyone let me know the steps I need to take to get this to be available to people using any PC when they visit my website? Do I need to convert it to another file type, embed a plug-in or whatever? Please explain in idiot proof terms as I'm a novice at this! Many thanks.

.m4a is a pretty standard file format. Sometimes PC users have better luck when they change the extension of the file to .mp4. But I'm not recommending this approach.
Here's where I am going with this... If you publish any kind of media file with iWeb -- video or audio -- iWeb will by default use (or expect to use) QuickTime to play them. This is true whether the site is being viewed on a PC or a Mac. The QuickTime coding is right there in the iWeb generated HTML files. Therefore, as long as your PC viewers have QuickTime installed (the latest version of QuickTime7 preferably), they will have no problem with the .m4a extension files.

  • Publishing iweb site outside of web.mac

can i publish an iweb-created site somewhere besides my web.mac account? how? any advice appreciated.
    pb g4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What file do I need to transfer, and how do I get that first file to be named index.html?
Please read the rest of the note, especially the part coming after "What to Upload". It tells you exactly what to transfer: one file called index.html and one folder which will have the same name as your site has inside the iWeb app. Both of these are produced by iWeb when you publish to a folder. If you follow these instructions and use a real ftp program like Cyberduck, you should not have a problem. There is no need for you to name anything index yourself (and it is best not to do that), it is all done for you by iWeb.
