Transporting Itunes to new macbook--help!

I bought an external hard drive and dragged my itunes folder from my old imac into the icon. I then attached the external hard drive to my new macbook and it showed the itunes icon, so i clicked on it. It said that it could not be supported on this system. There was also an icon over it like the no smoking sign, a circle with a line through it.
My best guess is that I have to deauthorize my old itunes? But I still want to have that music on my computer because I'm not going away to college for another two or three weeks. Anyone have an idea what I have to do?

You appear to be trying to move the iTunes application, which doesn't contain any of the songs; the songs will be located in ~/Music/iTunes/ by default in Mac OS X, where ~ is the folder in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon. If the first computer is running Mac OS 9, look in the folder Documents:iTunes of the hard disk for the music.

  • How do I delete songs & podcast from iPhone using iTunes on new MacBook Pro

I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro after years of using PC.
First thing I have to say is that I love it. I've had a couple of problems here-and-there but these have been teething issues which these discussion boards have mostly helped me resolve... I have been unable to resolve this one issue though which I was hoping that someone could help me with....
I have plugged my iPhone into my new Mac and let it appear in iTunes but when I attempt to delete old songs or podcasts from the iPhone it does not let me delete them... I've tried holding control and clicking on the items- hoping that delete would be an option, but it isn't. Also I've notice that delete is not one of my options in the edit tab at the top of iTunes.
I understand that I can delete individual podcasts and albums/songs through the iPhone itself by swiping right and selecting delete but when I do this for All individual episodes of a podcast then the main header for the "show" still remains...
Would love if someone could help me with this- need to be able to manage the songs and podcast on my iPhone.
    Thankyou for your time.

"Ok- but what if I want to manually manage the songs and podcasts on my iPhone and somehow loose access to the computer which I used to put said songs and podcasts on the iPhone in the first place?"
The you would ned to use the backup copy of tht computer to put everything on the new computer.
"  Is there a way in which I can manage/delete the content on the iPhone using my new computer without retoring it to factory settings and starting all over again?"
You do not have to restore it, but you cannot access the music at all from this other computer until you sync it, which will erase the content.
"And just to clarify: I don't have any problems with playing the content that remains on my iPhone, it's just the managing and deleting of this content."
    I understand completely.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

Also , if its ok to ask, what is the best ie : microsoft word , or another programme to use for university use, my sister in law is studying to be a nurse and the work they have is unbelievable so she needs a good documents office so she can do essays, dissitations, and modules where she can put a picture on a new document write a little about it and maybe put a few more pictures on that same document ?.

  • PowerBook G4 using external HD for iTunes to new MacBook Pro

How can I move my iTunes library (all music, movies, ratings history, etc) from my old PowerBook G4 using an external hard drive to my new MacBook Pro?
Migration Assistant will not work due to incompatible versions of the software, and the Apple Store/Training Crew/Genuis Bar couldn't help me and told me to connect to the external HD, drag my music over and start a new library.  But my goal here is to not lose almost ten years of ratings, playlists and history.
The iTunes program files (Version 9.2.1) are on the old PowerBook G4, but all actual music files are on the external.  I know this isn't going to be easy, but how can I make this happen without starting over???
Thank you all for your help,
    EH

I think I know hte issue but not the immediate solution. Your external drive doesn't have the full library, just the media files. The library files which have all the things you see in hte iTunes browser are on your old computer so you don't see it when you plug the drive into your new computer.
You could try copying just the library files from the hard drive of your old computer to the same location on your new computer, then try opening hte external drive. This might work.
Incidentally, mpst people put their whole library, not just hte media files, on their external drives so it is all a neat package for moving between computers.  I don't think, though, that this will be a simple matter of copying the library files to the hard drive because the location references might not work

  • Can't get iTunes to new MacBook Pro

My old MacBook Pro had such a small HD that I had to put my music on an external HD. I bought a new MacBook Pro with a 500 Gig drive. The other day I tried transfering my itunes library to the new MacBook. When I have the external drive connected the music plays, but when I don't it doesn't.
The Advanced Preferences window shows iTunes pointing to the right place on my MacBook, but in fact there is no iTunes Library.
This is what the finder looks like:
But here's the location on my Ext. Hard Drive.
It seems evident that my library did not move. I am unsure what to do as I don't want the whole thing to transfer again as the folder iTunes on my new MacBook is nearly 5 gig. What can I do? Followed the instructions for moving the library. But evidently the file that is most important did not move.
I guess it may help to say what happens when I try to play a song with out the ext drive connected: I get an exclamation point next to the song. When I click on it, I get a window asking me to located the song.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
which is what I think you did.

  • Authorizing iTune on new MacBook

I have a new MacBookPro and would like to transfer my iTunes music on my old Dell laptop to iTunes on my new MacBook. When I plug in my iPod to my new MacBook I am told it can not be authorized.

  • HT3199 connect iTunes on new macbook to apple tv 1st gen. library

On my formar macbook I had iTunes to synch with Apple TV 1st generation.
After upgrading to a new macbook pro with iTunes 11.0.3 I observe following problem:
    1. on apple tv 1st gen. the library from my old macbook is there but in light gray, i.e. not connected to new macbook
    2. when connecting new computer to apple tv 1st gen. it will create a new library (instead of connecting with existing library).
    3. in iTunes, Devices Apple TV, only buttons "Settings" and "Photos" appear on top of window. "Music", "TV-shows" are missing.
How do I connect the two libraries, i.e. iTunes library on my new macbook with library on my apple tv 1st gen (last synched with my old macbook)?

AppleTV 1 was designed to sync with a single computer, but apart from untransferred purchases made on AppleTV, the sync was to AppleTv only.
You cannot make the new computer sync with AppleTV without removing the old sync connection on AppleTV under Settings>Computers.  Doing this wipes the AppleTV of content tomprepare tobsync with a new iTunes library.
AppleTV1 also allowed streaming only from several computers other than the synced one - content will appear under My Shared Movies and so forth when the computer is on.
you really need to remove both computer entries  from the Computers settings screen then re-add the new iTunes as a sync library.
Hopefully you have still got the old computer to allow you to copy media to the new one, or have copies of he media somewhere.
If most of your stuff was from iTunes Store then you should be able to redownload in iTunes.

  • Restoring iTunes to new MacBook

I have all my music on my old iBook, G4, and have been backing it up using "backup" to an external HD. I would like to add my entire iTunes library to my new MacBook, but couldn't figure out how to 'restore' into the new iTunes.
I've heard that the old OS and the new OS don't talk to each other too well, so I don't know if filesharing will work that well. Since my new MacBook uses "TimeMachine" and not "Backup", what exactly can I do that will make this process the easiest? Is filesharing still an option?

    Is filesharing still an option?
Yes. Drag the iTunes Library inside the item named Music of the FInder's sidebar on the iBook to the same location on the MacBook.

  • Old Mac Ipod won't sync with new Macbook (help!)

Ok so this is probably something really easy but I can't for the life of me get it to work.
I got a new Macbook Pro recently and have been building up a new library with my older songs and newer ones I've acquired since the purchase. My problem is when I go to sync my Ipod to the new Mac my ipod automatically goes to the "ok to disconnect" screen without syncing anything. I pressed "sync" and "transfer purchases" and it still goes into disconnect mode, very quickly too.
Its almost as if the ipod is protecting itself and dosen't want to sync to the new Mac for that reason, but that's what I need it to do. Its a 'Mac to Mac' move so its not like I'm putting a Mac ipod into a Windows computer
What do I have to do, or how do I get to a setting that would let my ipod sync successfully on this new laptop? If anybody could help it would totally save the day.
The ipod is an iPod classic 2008-09 120gb

    Hey Ginger795
You would have to tell it to erase and sync the iPod. With a new library you will want to sync exclusively or set up “Manually manage music” on the iPod to make it work properly

  • Transfered iTunes to new MacBook -lost playlists...

Sold my soul and got a MacBook. I transfered my complete iTunes library to a B/W tower in preperation to switch to my new MacBook. Everything copied to the tower perfectly. When I got the laptop (prior to copying the iTunes libray to it) I downloaded and installed the most recent itunes update. When I finally transfered my itunes library, for some reason my playlists aren't there.
Did I not copy everything over properly this time? Is it a matter of recopying the itunes data file again- is that where the playlists are?
And while I'm asking does anyone know why my G4 running OS 10.3.9 wouldn't accept my MacBook in firewire disk mode (it said it wasn't recognisable, or something to that effect)?
    Many thanks

I just re-copied the itunes library file and the .xml file and my playlists are back, though with some I have to make sure some of them are finding the song in my itunes music folder.

  • Clicking noise, random loud fan, brand new macbook help?

    Ok. Here goes:
Just bought a new macbook 2.16, with 2 gigs of ram from an apple store on Friday. I notice that about every twenty seconds I hear clicks that sound like the harddrive is thinking, followed by a slightly louder fan, and then just as suddenly the louder fan goes away. I downloaded IstatPro and my fan would hover around 1799 but constantly go from 1795 up to 1805.
What's strange is that when it gets louder, I don't hear it go up to speed like my Imac used to do, and it's not a higher frequency but sounds like something that was in front of the vent kind of jumped to the side, and now it's just louder.
It's annoying. I would much prefer a constant 1800 whir which is actually quite pleasent.
Let me know if this is normal fan activity. Or any idea of what this could be. Besides that the computer is running great. I'm going in on Saturday and possibly asking for a new computer? Just now afraid that I might not get something better. Also the box the computer came in was really dirty, and a little banged up. Do they used recycled boxes, or could I have possibly got a previously owned unit? Thanks. sorry for the long post...

... we've got the same machine. mine's a month old; it sounds exactly as you describe. the fan noise increases with cpu load, and on mine doesn't start to bug me until around 3,000 rpm and gets real loud ~6. the last laptop I had, a win machine, was absolutely silent until I saved to the hard drive or opened a new program. the keyboard was silent too. so I got spoiled. I did about a 100 page search here and it seems common for the macbook to run noisily and hot. I haven't been able to get a definite yes or no from any genius or tech on whether the fan is designed to ever shut off, but from what I've found out, I would guess not. The cd/dvd drive crunches and clunks when it grabs a disc (there's a recording of this on the apple site indicating it is normal)and when it spins up, sounds like the machine will lift off the desk -- which I have read other users say.
take an hour and search here. between user comments and moderator replies, and the apple tech docs, there's a lot of info.
    hope that helps.

  • Scared of buying a new Macbook - help!

Scared of buying a new Macbook!
I really need to buy a laptop due to a book I'm about to start writing, but after reading all the negative things on here about the new Macbook and Macbook Pro with overheating and this funny heat gel that Apple are dunking on the intel chips to try and stop them from overheating, I'm a little worried about spending my money on a new one and am more inclined to buy an older used iBook; perhaps a 6 month old one.
Okay, questions to put my mind at rest. I would rather have a more future-proof intel laptop, and I do like the widescreen resolution of the new Macbook as I can play back native 720x1280 progressive HD footage.
So, this dollop of heat gel, is it on the Macbook chip from the factory from new, or do Apple engineers just dollop this stuff on there when they get a overheating one returned to try and rectify the problem. If the latter is the case, surely this will only work until the gel dries up and stops having any cooling effect?
Will future Macbooks be sorted, if so, should I wait 3 months and by a revised rev-B type Macbook.
I've also read that the fans can rev loud.
I'm only asking as I bought one of the first iMac G5's and it was an overheating over revving disaster; so much so that I had to sell it on eBay after just 3 months as I could not stand it. I bought another one a year later that is fine; after Apple sorted the design problems out. I don't want to make the same mistake again.
    Advice please.
Oh, I love Macs, I have 3 in the house, iMac G5, intel Mac Mini and Dual 2 gig G5 tower. So I don't need convincing. I have been using Macs long enough to know that Apple tend to have teething problems with new gear, but when they sort it, it is simply the best.
    Thanks.

Hello, I can't answer all your questions, but just so you understand,ALL cpu chips (even the previous apple g4's and g5's), some video chips, etc. use the silicon grease as a way to carry the heat away from the chips to the metal heat sinks. Every computer ever made (well maybe not the original tube ones have this type of heat transfer technology in place so the chips don't melt down.
The comments about heat grease are mostly about how much was applied (with the belief that too much grease may not transfer the heat effectively), not whether or not it is needed. Recent articles on other web sites indicate that in some tests where the factory heat grease is cleaned and removed, then replaced with what some consider to be top notch grease, has only reduced the temperature of the case by 2 degrees. To be clear, this was for the macbook pros, where there seems to be even more concern by some about temperature.
By the way, this heat grease is designed to last longer than the computer it is running in. It does not typically dry out during the lifetime of the computer.
Should you buy the Macbook? Only you can decide if this makes sense. But there are a lot of other people on other forums (popular mac magazines, and rumor sites) who are quite pleased with the machine so far.
Personally, I would not buy a previous generation at this point.

  • Getting a new macbook, help

ok i just got this macbook a little over a year ago but now my mom wants one and i persuaded her to take mine and give me the new one haha. but now i have to move EVERYTHING from this computer to my new one. i have a feeling this is going to be a pain. right now i have a .mac subscription on this macbook that runs my moms website, which is the main reason she wants this one so we dont have to transfer anything. but i also have my iphone set up on this macbook. i need to know how to:
-move all my songs from this macbook to the new one (is there some kind of reverse sync so i can put the songs on my iphone onto my new macbook)
-i need to know how to get all my mail sent to my new macbook and now my old one
-cancel all the syncing of contacts, bookmarks, etc. from this macbook and set it up to the new one. if i think of anything else i will edit this post. basically i want 2 give my mom a macbook with nothing on it and be able to get myself back to normal on my new one.
    thanx everyone

Just connect them with a FireWire cable and use FireWire target disk mode and Migration Assistant to move the files over to the new computer.
Then, use the system discs that came with the old computer to perform an Erase & Install and hand the computer off to her.

  • Help transferring music from iTunes to new MacBook Pro

    Hi there,
I am almost all set up with my new laptop. One last hitch; I can't seem to transfer my music over. I tried to put my library (about 6G) of music from my old (PC) laptop onto my iPhone and then figured I could just upload it from the iPhone to the MacBook but I when I try to sync it doesn't seem to want to work. I am getting a message that leads me to believe that when I try to sync the iPhone to the MacBook I will lose my iTunes library. Has anyone tried this? Is there an easier way to move the music files over?
    Thanks!!

  • Problem with Itunes and new Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro, my first Apple computer ever though I have other Apple products (iPad, iPod, iPhone).  All of my iTunes music and playlists are on my Dell PC at work.  My hope is to transfer my music to my new Mac (at home) so that I have more room for actual work items on my computer at the office.
I had no trouble transferring the songs (via my iPod) the songs are there but the playlists are not listed on my new computer (the Mac).  Is Mac compatible with making playlists in iTunes and if so how can I get those lists back other than paistakingly creating all 45 play lists one by one again?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Do you have an external hard drive?  If you do, connect the drive to the PC.  Copy the iTunes Folder and all the media and various library files it contains from the PC to the drive.  Connect the drive to the Mac.  Copy the folder and replace the folder on the Mac in your Home > Music with the one from the PC.  Start iTunes and it will now be pretty much identical to the one that was on the PC.  Caution: If you have put things on the Mac that were not on the PC then you will need to change the process a bit.
