Trap error on new MBP

I've bought a new 17" MacBook Pro (lucky me) and used the migration tool to move my apps and user directory from my old MBP. I then updated the software so that everything is now current. I have a problem with daily kernal traps, always as safari is reloading a page. Of course I didn't get this error before. I notice that I have a string of incorrect Java permissions that Disc Utility won't fix, even from the install disc. I'm currently using Chrome to try to isolate the problem to Safari. To be sure I'll also try using safari from another user account to see if it's confined to preferences on my user account
If the trap doesn't recur:
should I uninstall and reinstall Safari? If so how do I completely uninstall it?
What else should I do?

If you didn't follow the steps in Best Practices and Setup new Mac, then consider starting over. As for the permissions stuff, see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12685330#12685330

  • New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004

    Hi,
I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong.

  • New MBP 15", Windows installation fails with error 0x80070570 or 0x80070570D

    Hey guys!
I finally got a new MBP a few weeks ago, and I wanted to install a Windows partition for some games. I have tried this with several different windows copies (both legal and illegal, and both of windows 7 and windows 8), but to none avail. The exact error message I keep getting is:
    Windows 7:
"Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or mossing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070570"
    Windows 8:
"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070570D"
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I've let the bootcamp utility put the disk images on the USB. As I mentioned before, I got the Windows installation images through various legal and illegal sources and made several attempts with each and evere disk image, so that should not be the cause.

  • CS4 not running on new MBP, licensing error?!

My 2008 MBP finally bit it and I just got a new MBP with Mavericks. I transferred my old drive over to the new computer but I can't get CS4 to work. It keeps saying there's a licensing error (150:30). Help!!

The CS4 apps should work fine in Mavericks - it sounds as if you're having a problem stemming from Adobe.
If I were you, I would contact Adobe support and see if they have a solution for your problem. It would also be good to know exactly how you transferred the files - you may have to completely reinstall CS4 again to get all of the support files in place.
    Good luck,

  • Sync error(3689) /w new MBP to AppleTV(G1) & NO Firewall

I switched form Windows to a MBP and I get a Sync error(3689) from iTunes to my AppleTV(g1), there is no firewall on the MBP. I've tried resetting to factory load and it still fails. Funny thing is I can still Sync from my iTunes Windows box.

Update on problem with ATV(G1) and new MBP17 (Thunderbolt). Did a Factory Restore on the ATV which took it back to v1.1 and wiped all the content of the ATV. Then updated to current ATV software, then set up an entirely new sync connection to my iTunes Library on the MBP.
The selected a few items to sync on the MBP (so I could see results quickly, rather than waiting for a 55GB sync to fail). Clicked Apply. Then clicked Sync.
The sync then starts. It syncs one song. iTunes shows progress bar in the normal way. Then it hangs (progress bar stops).
Then I quit iTunes. It warns me that an Apple TV is syncing. But confirm quit.
Then reopen iTunes, and I find the ONE song is happily synced on to the ATV.
Immediately after restarting iTunes, it then (correctly) starts to sync again, picking up with the next song on the list.
But it then hangs again, after ONE song.
    So, what do we know?
    1) iTunes 10.2.1 on new MBP does correctly 'see' the ATV(G1) over both WiFI and Ethernet (I've tried both).
    2) It is possible to correctly set up the ATV(G1) to sync with the iTunes Library on MBP. The ATV generates the Passcode and iTunes on the MBP accepts that Passcode in the normal manner.
    3) But note here - iTunes asked for the passcode TWICE. Is this a fault?
    4) iTunes happily accepts your sync instructions (either automatic or manual) and starts to sync.
    5) It then hangs after one song (or a couple of photos).
    6) On reopening iTunes it picks up sync where it hung up, but then only does one song.
A thought about an issue that may be part of the problem. I used Apple's Migration Assistant to set up my new MBP by restoring the contents of my old MP 8-Core's hard drive to the new machine from a back up on an Apple Time Capsule, using Apple Time Machine. (Basically, a 100% Apple-approved process for setting up a new Mac with all the data and settings from a previous Mac).
In EVERY other respect (email settings etc) this process has worked 100%.

  • 2 days new MBP / Partition error & Filevault freeze

    Hi all,
I just get a brand new MBP. Unfortunately I can't create a new partition (from Boot camp or Disk Utility)
It seems that the problem is due to the activation of FileVault (which is always asking me to plug the book in order to finish encryption... but when i plug it .. nothing change)
    My question is :
May I will have trouble if I reformat the disk entirely (no precious data on it) ?
I want to do it without any risk of crashing definitely the disk.. ( core storage story blablabla ..)
I saw many topics with people trying to play with partition (in order to save or erase or modify ..) no success.
    - I tried to do a re install from the cmd + R
    -> No change
I just want to have again this yosemite "setup" that you have when you open the box from apple...
I hope my question is clear.
    Thx

  • New MBP - wireless/internet access networking problem - a summary!

    Greetings!
New MBP here, with all the trimmings (MacOS X 10.4.10 - Safari 3 Beta). New also to the Apple/MAC world
MBP >> wireless networking into a Linksys WRT54G router and >> thru HughesNet DW7000 Satellite Internet connection (not the fastest, but hey, the US and especially rural areas are NOT S. Korea when it comes to speedy internet connections!
Frankly, I bought into it for two reasons: First, hearing about the vaunted Mac a/v/ and doc/photo editing capabilities,... and about MacOS stability, etc... Well, it all needs a little work still: on the part of new users like me, but also probably on the part of the Apple/Mac people as well. 2nd reason I decided to purchase the MBP - i.e. ability to run Windows (I have not yet tried BootCanp, etc...: still resolving preliminary issues!). I still live in a heavy Win environment at my business - no other way of course!
Communications issues seem to still prevail: I am hanging out at several VERY HELPFUL forums (AppleDiscussionForum, MacRumorsForums, etc...) and the same issues keep popping up. Im my case, same as all above reported, with a few additional points, as follows:
    1. Xmission errors: seem to be - at least in my case - a constant factor, regardless on how close/far i am from my wireless router. For example, I would be attempting to dwnload an upgrade (large)QT or MacOS file. i am barely into the dowmoad, and I already have several Read/Send errors. By the end of the download, I will have probably about 15 Rcv and 5 Send errors. Never gets quite that bad in my Win machines, I must mention. Anything to do here (I know, there are such things always affecting wireless com). AND, MOST importantly, how that this affect the effectiveness of the upgrade (I spotted same thing with MacOS 10.4.10 and Safari Beta 3 upgrade downloads!). Would it be likely that applying upgrades in such circumstances would screw up the OS??? Could OTOH such errors be automatically "compensated" by re-xmits from the source, and eventually the download would be OK? Because quite frankly, I do NOT know if my important upgrade download was OK to apply to the system, given those errors!!!
Also same thing with PING errors. Quite frequent when pinging another device on my network.
    2. Quite often, accessing a site will proceed somehow OK, and then things will get stuck twd the end, as if some buffer somewhere gets overloaded??? Of course, as elsewhere reported, same can often happen with com getting stuck right over the "www" part of the URL!
    3. AND, of course, the often reported "NO connection to the Internet", but computer shows good signal level and connection otherwise.
    4. Strangely enough, seems that the Airport Extreme wifi card sort of "warms up the the internet" as one proceeds to start using it. It eventually picks up on a network, and often "improves" its connection over time!
    5. Built in Airport Extreme seems to not exhibit up all immediately surrounding networks. Sensitivity issue?? iStumbler does.
    6. iStumbler permanently posts noise level of 9% regardless of how close to my wireless router/broadband modem I am. Anyone uses iStumbler to monitor network traffic?
This is getting longuish: I just want to get over all those p*ant issues and get into putting my a/v stuff together!!

Thanks for just reading all this!. I am not sure it is all fixable (back to the Win "features" terminology, really meaning "bugs"??)

Thanks, BDaqua. This support forum is quite well stocked: I have been perusing all its nooks and cranies!
On the www.dslreports.com - All things Mac - forum, I spotted a couple of mentions of the following type of infromation:
    link: »www.hardmac.com/news/2007-07-27/#7039
    - The first TechNote provides information concerning the Airport problem affecting the MBP Santa Rosa (but also other Mac Intel). When used on battery, the wireless connection drops and one can even experience kernel panic. Apple Centers are asked not to exchange affected notebook as this is due to a unidentified bug in the Atheros driver, and should be fixed in the future with a simple Airport system update. So for the moment, unfortunate users are asked to directly power their notebook when using wireless network, or using Ethernet connection when running on battery... in other words, turn your notebook into a desktop

I am wondering if you and folks on this close-to-Apple forum know anything about this. At least, we could just await remedy instead of messing around endlessly looking for solutions and... pondering as to whether it was a wise thing to purchase an expensive machine which happens to have trouble communicating online. After all, seems that the Mac folks are prone to spend MORE time online uploading/downloading music and videos instead of my being normally doing with the rest of my (Win) computers, i.e. work on customer lists, correspondence, inventories, accounting, data bases, etc....
So, seems to me we do have a pb and Apple might just save a few $$$ on silly ads and get to work on com instead. if nothing else to avoid the appearance of further - admittedly rather funny - ad-spoofs!
So back to your further inquiry. I run a wireless network from a HughesNet satellite modem, thru a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, into some nearby office LANed desktops and point of sale equipment, to another neighbouring facility via wireless bridge, and to my Mac laptop. Distance from the laptop to the router: 50 ft max.
It all works surprizingly very well: up to 200kbps up and 1000 kbps down (in prime time, 150 up and 600 down). OK, my set up looks complex and incurring LOTS of activity. Actually, online activity is quite minimal and well scheduled - right now I am the only machine on the network online. Otherwise, our office processes online money wiring for customers among other things.
I'll try your DNS server choice on the Mac settings first. Will report accordingly.
    Thanks for everything!

  • Config. a New MBP and Wanting Some Advice.

(I apologize for the spelling errors ahead of time, but I need to hit the sack. However, I wanted to get this out since I do need to make a final decision on the new MBP early am. Getting feedback, other people's experiences, pointing out my crazy way of thinking, etc. all help me.)
    Hello-
I am configuring a new 17" MBP. I have a ton of questions mostly because I stopped updating the OS at Tiger 10.4.11. Due to being accepted into a grad.school of architecture, panning, and preservation earlier than I thought, I will not be able to do what I was planning. that was learning Leopard on a friend's computer while taking what I thought was my last upper division course and having the basics of that OS, and having SL on the new 17" MPB for school. which I am now starting 4 months before I thought.
I stopped at the Tiger version because Macs were real hard for me to learn and I am still probably way behind what most kids can do. (Oh, just out of the blue, what does it mean when Apple uses OS X a lot? (Are all of the Operating Systems OS X or how does that work?)
Any feeling on skipping over Leopard and getting a Mac with SL installed, if indeed that is what they are now doing.
I could go of on some more technical questions but I am going to not make this too long and ask m last question about the iPods. When they fist came out, I tried one and I broke it. it told me to install this software on the Pod but it already had it installed on it and I could not get it to work after that. The second time, I was exercising with it and I guess the jogging on the treadmill was too hard on the hard drive and it was out flat and cold as ice.
So, I just switched t my old FM Sony and used that but I would like to get an iPod with the new Mac and hopefully use it with iTunes to download the thousands of songs I have purchased o iTunes onto the iPod. Any suggestions on how to learn using it? I am sure it is simple for most of you and you guys are laughing at me, but am serious, there has got to be another person out there, who did not grasp how to use it like the rest of the world.
Also, I have never understood why Apple does not come with a practical Owner's Manual? Every time I look up something it is not there or has such little written about that are, it does me no good. I have heard about the Missing manuals and that they have one coming out for th iPods.
any recommendation on an iPod for a beginner? Not something too large but comfortable, holds up to a clumsy big person, like I hope my MacBook Pro will. What is the name of the one you recommend and anything else as far as ear plugs or security straps that will help me keep it intact for awhile? Any resources that yo know of that is a good resource? Any on here in a section some people have sent me to but I cannot seem to find the Article section in the Apple Support area but I know there are a lot of good articles on how to do a lot of stuff somewhere. maybe it is not as organized as I assumed it was. it seems so good, I wold even like to have it on hard copy here at my desk, but probably copyright problems there.
thanks for any recommendations and accessories for the iPod. I do not really have thousands and thousands of music I would like to download into m iPod.
I'll sneak one last one in here, are the Macs with 2 graphics architecture really something that is needed, or maybe I do not understand how the 2 that are used-NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics processors used all the time when needed (which is determined by the software like games, architecture apps, etc.? I know in my are I will need this for sure but I just do not understand it like I should. I will read up on it but if anybody has any "bits and pieces" that could help me understand why the average "Joe" would get a notebook with this intense graphic ability, I just do not understand.
I also understand that you can turn them on and off or use one or two, but is this something the user can do or the notebook does? I was also wondering if these intense graphic cards draw from their own dedicated power or what? Is this e of the reasons why the new MBP give one the ability to put up to 8 GB of pretty intense RAM in this machine.
the 13 MBP does not have both graphic cards, right? But it will take up to 8 GB of RAM. I am not getting something or my technology skills need to be worked on.
The mini display port which seems like most notebooks are installing now, allows for pure digital connection to external displays. Can somebody give me a few examples of what this would be? Are they talking about larger displays that work off of the notebook but sit o your desk or can be used to watch a movie? I am not familiar with the term "pure digital.
OK, thanks a ton. Sorry again if it is not clear but I need to it the sack. I really appreciate being able to come to a place like this and get some pro help.
BTW, if anybody has come across some rude or strange posts using this Profile Name, I have been having trouble with my 2 sons doing this stuff. I have a rule that all computers are open to anybody as long as they ask if they can use it and do not snoop around looking for personal stuff. One of them found this site and ...well, long story but I am trying to deal with it like my family deals with problems like this--not the typical way most families will deal with this, but I know it will stop now.

You can't edit a post after anyone else has responded to it, and you can't ever completely delete it — but during the short time it's available for editing (30 minutes or so, if no one has responded), you can delete all the text from it.
Maybe you could try prioritizing your questions, so folks here will know which ones are most important to you and focus on those first?

  • New MBP and quit unexpected

I just got my new MBP last night. (whohoo) Unfortuately, when I tried to launch Iphoto, garageband, or Imovie, I get the 'quit unexpected' error.
    That's not right? Right?
Should I be doing something else besides clicking on the icon?
    Any clues??????
    Thanks in advance

OK, tried that. And nope, still get the same error.
I looked at the report and it says: Library not loaded. Reason: Image not found
When I look in the library, I can see Iphoto, Imovie, etc.
Do you think I need to reinstall?
Or maybe I need to take this back to the store and have them check things out. Ideas?

  • New MBP and sony

i have a sony dsc-t77 (pink) camera that i purchased in janurary. i tried using a card reader to get photos off the memory stick duo and my new MBP doesn't even recognize that there is something plugged in. when i put an SD card into the reader, it works just fine but refuses to even recognize the sony MS. i tried another card reader and got the same result, no ability to read the card. then i dug out my camera cable and plugged it in and nothing...the latest on the sony webpage says OS 10.4 and i have the latest OSX 10.7. does anybody know of any way to get the pictures off this camera? i hate to have to buy another one and waste the $400 i spent in january but i guess i will have to go back to canon (and the sd card format) if i can't get this computer to read the sony MS duo. please help, i really want this to work. any ideas??? i am looking at getting the griffin simple-dock thingy that has card readers built in but wonder if this would work plugged into my time capsule and not the computer. its so worth if it if i can plug it into my TC and just put the MS duo in to that when i need to transfer pictures.

thank you for the response, i think i actually solved my own problem accdidently. it was apparently operator error as i didn't know that i had to turn the camera on once it was plugged into the computer. once i did this it worked fine and i could import pictures into iphoto. since i have always used a card reader with all of my cameras in the past, i have never needed to plug the camera into the computer directly.
i still can't get the card readers to work, but i guess i don't need to since i have the ability to plug the camera in. now all i need to figure out is how to put the files onto my time capsule so they will be backed up.

  • How do I import my library from an external disk to my new MBP hard drive?

My old MBP was running out of space so I exported my Aperture library (250GB) to an external drive.  I just replaced my old computer with a new MBP with a 1TB flash drive.  Now that I have the space, I want to put my library back on my computer but I can't figure out how bring it in from my external hard drive.  Any ideas?  Many thanks.

Why do you say " I exported my Aperture library"? Did you actually use "File > Export > Items as new Library" in Aperture to create a new library on your external drive? A simple drag and drop of the library should have sufficed. What is your Aperture version?

Connect your external drive and use the Finder to drag the Aperture library from the external drive back to the Pictures folder.
Then double-click the library to point Aperture to the new location and open the copied library in Aperture.
If your Aperture library uses referenced originals, select the referenced images and use the command File > Consolidate originals"  to move the originals back to your internal disk.
If you should encounter any error messages (like error -36) while moving the library to the internal drive, post back.

I downloaded A3 from the Mac Store, I've deleted it and re-installed and still get the same message. My MBP is running 10.6.8.
Any ideas, hope you can help.
    Thanks!

Hi, Thanks! The solution on the Macrumors forum worked! A plugin manager issue!
I've copied the solution below for anyone else who may run into the issue.
Turns out it's a simple fix.
For those with the same problem:
    1. Navigate to: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
    2. Delete the PluginManager
    3. Get a new copy of the PluginManager. (You can copy one from a friends macbook) or use the one hosted here: http://qvenon.com/files/PluginManager.zip
    Thanks again!
    best,

  • Resume Time Machine Backup On New MBP (props available)

    Hello Officials,
I do not mean to scare away answers, but I am an experienced Mac boy, and would be forever honored with help on (this now) complicated issue below:
    Info:
My old MBP had a couple of logic board replacements, now I have the new MBP. I want to perform a clean install, and thus don't want to restore from my full time machine backup (3.3TB of data). I did use Migration-sh't-Assitant for my apps, (and proper delete process for ones I didn't want) but want further options. My main problem is that I would like to go back to having my old version of Mail (with mailbox's and rss) and my old +Address Book+. (I am aware of the longer steps to get these two to work) _As well as_, I want to resume my Time Machine backups from my old backups.
    Goal:
Continue using my old Time Machine backups for my new computer. Without 'Browse Other..'.
*You Should Know -That I Know*
I can hold option for a different Time Machine, it is a terrible way to operate the machine and its files.
It is a challenge due to the MAC address.
I can just re-sync Mail with all my other accounts, but I have a lot. I don't want to do that.
Address Book, even on my 'Browse other time machine disks' this is quite funky. Open to suggestions.
I already moved the backup onto a new drive. This is different.

An interesting terminal walkthrough. Unfortunately is dated and filled with errors:

I have been looking into this for hours, I'm interested in what there is.

I sincerely thank you for your time, you are truly kind-

    Hello Officials,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
But there are no "officials" here; this is a user-to-user forum. We're all users, just like you.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean the old versions of the Mail and Address book apps, or the old data? What version of OSX is on each Mac?

That's outdated (2008), and not needed on Snow Leopard. When the first backup of your new Mac starts, you should get an option to "re-use" the backups. See #B5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). But note that however you answer that, Time Machine will do a new, full backup of the new Mac.

  • Can't install WIn 7 on my new MBP

I just bought new 15" i7 MBP, and tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate (OEM). I use Boot Camp Assistance to create a partition for 32GB, and start Windows Setup. After I pressed Install Now button, I found an error message that the system cannot find CD/DVD media driver. How can I solve it?

I'm probably asking a very obvious question, but are you running Boot Camp Assistant directly from the hard disk or one of the DVD's that came with your MBP?
If you're running BCA from the hard disk, I'll speculate that maybe your new MBP i7 has a new/different model of DVD drive than the one(s) Boot Camp Assistant is expecting to find.
Go to About This Mac, More Info, Disc Burning, and view the description of your DVD drive.
If the DVD drive is a new model and isn't supported by Boot Camp Assistant yet, you might have to wait for a 10.6.4 update to fix it.
