Trap settings in illustrator?

I have made a logo in illustrator. It is a 3 color logo. I have a green box with yellow shape in it. This logo is placed in InDesign. The press operator would like a trap. How do I do this? Do I change settings in illustrator or in InDesign? And then how do I do that?
Thank  you
Tami
PS I am hoping that I will find an answer soon. Thanks for your help.

@Wade:
This is not nonsense - it is a very specialized set of functions for a very specific purpose. Can it be handled in such a cavalier way as you suggest? Sure it can - and I've been fixing those errors for years.
"…There would be no reason to trap it if it were process…" You cannot make this claim with the given variables (or lack thereof).
"…I gave them a simple solution  regardless of what the situation was…" You gave them "a solution" but one that may not be appropriate. It does not cover any situation.
This is not a "wrong side of the bed" situation. You are not giving Tami relevant advice since you cannot know what her particular situation is. This isn't a matter of whim - there are right ways and wrongs ways to trap - it is an inescapable truth. As a teacher (and please don't misunderstand your function here) you have a responsibility to convey the correct information. (BTW - unless people are specifically asking for opinions, people come in here asking questions to learn - that makes the responders Teachers.) What if you told Tami the wrong thing - the print job ran wrong, and she got fired over it - would you feel no responsibility for your advice?
@Mario:
It is indeed an Art. I cut my teeth with Rubylith and Amberlith doing hand-cut color separations, creating film-based traps with vacuum frames and pos/negs… ahh. Electronic trapping is cleaner but I miss the stripping tables some days.

  • Unknown error - (PARM), .pdf settings and Illustrator problems

I am using Illustrator CS3, and recently I no longer had choices for .pdf settings when saving from Illustrator as a .pdf. The only setting is "Custom" and I can't scroll to another choice. As I understand it, if I load .pdf settings in Illustrator they are available in all Adobe applications (very possibly wrong about that), but when I choose Edit: Adobe  PDF Presets, I get an error message: "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. (PARM)". Also when I try to save an .eps file as an AI document, I get the message "An unknown error has occurred."
I have thrown away my preferences to no avail, and am afraid I am going to have to reload Illustrator CS3, which I downloaded last year and do not have the disks for, I which I am having a very hard time trying to download again. (This part I guess I have to call about).
I usually work in Quark, but recently worked in some files in InDesign, and that's when this started, I think. Perhaps a coincidence. Many thanks in advance for any help.

    AM,
Okay, so sorry. But you and Wade are official, right? Can you help point me
in the right direction for getting replacement disks for my legally
purchased software Or getting download help so that I might re-download?
We are rather unofficial natives here. You should contact Adobe Customer Support about downloading.
You should be able to get rid of the error if you Move the folder, but it is still worth having the backup, even if you upgrade.

  • How do I migrate settings in Illustrator after updating from CC to CC 2014?

I have just updated from CC to CC 2014 and was not given the option to migrate settings for Illustrator as I was for Photoshop. How can I do this?

I don't know if this is the easiest way to do it, but it works.
Hard Drive> Users (choose your name) > Library (if you don't see the Library - View> View Options> Show Library Folder) >Application Support > Adobe
You should see Adobe Illustrator 17 & 18 folders
Adobe Illustrator 17> en_US in this folder you will find your saved Brushes, Swatches, Symbols etc...
Open the Adobe Illustrator  18> en_US and manually place any of files from Ai 17 into the appropriate folders in Ai 18. Restart Ai 18 and check to see that everything is in place.

  • My UI preferences are set to identical settings in Illustrator and InDesign, why don't they look the same?

My UI preferences are set to identical settings in Illustrator and InDesign ("scale to lower supported scale factor") and AI looks perfect, ID is too big. Why don't they look the same if the settings are the same? Driving me CRAZY. I have my windows scaling factor at 124% and it needs to stay enlarged, otherwise nothing else on my system will be readable. The inconsistency of the workspaces is so annoying.

    Hello billwoodard11,
Thanks for the question. If your computer is not compatible with HD 1080p content, you should receive a prompt stating so - but should still be able to download the content for use on other devices. For more information, check out this resource:

How to purchase, download, or view HD 1080p content
iTunes 10.6 by default is set to purchase, download, and playback HD content in 720p. You must change your local preference setting if you prefer to download, purchase, and playback HD content in 1080p. Depending on your computer's hardware configurations, you may be unable to purchase, rent, or playback content in 1080p. iTunes may display the following dialog:
    On Mac or PC
Download the latest version of iTunes. You can download iTunes for free.
From the iTunes menu, choose iTunes > Preferences > Store (for PC, choose Edit > Preferences > Store).
Next to "When downloading High Definition videos, prefer:" set your preference to 1080p1.
Click OK. Now, when you purchase or download HD content, your computer will always download in 1080p, when available.
Depending on your computer's hardware limitations, you may be unable to purchase, rent, or view HD content from the iTunes Store. If you are trying to view HD video on an external display, the display must have a digital connection (DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI) and support HDCP.

  • Zoom settings in illustrator

IS there a way to set up custom zoom settings in Illustrator? My zoom jumps from 150% to 100%. It would be great to get it somewhere in the middle.

    > doesn't that just save the current zoom state?
    Well, did you try it?
    It saves the current
    view (including zoom, position, visibility).
I frequently save a view at 133% zoom, which compensates for Illustrator's 72ppi vs. Windows 96ppi. When zoomed to 133, screen captures paste back into AI at a size that matches what was captured.
I also would much prefer for Illustrator to allow one to edit the value lists of popup menus like zoom and stroke weight, but it doesn't. Saving Views is a workaround for selecting a particular user-defined zoom from a menu.

  • How to prepare a PDF with pass4press settings in Illustrator CC

I am re-setting as advert for a client who has asked that the artwork be sent to the publisher as; QUOTE - "Artwork to be supplied in high-resolution PDF. All images within the PDF must be 300dpi images formatted to PPA Pass4press Version 9" I can download the presets from the PPA website, but which one? None are for Illustrator CC (only CS3 and CS5). Does it actaully matter? and is it simply a case of creating the PDF using this PDF preset in my drop down menu?
I remember when all you had to do was make sure you were working in CMYK, create outlines, embed images, and used a hi-res setting (Press quality). I'm really just a little unsure.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thankyou Monika,
I am concerned that the versions are specific, rather than being chonological. But it would seem that they are as version 10 seems to be specific to CS5, whereas version 9 is CS3.
Was wondering why there are no support options offered for this through the PPA, or maybe I'm just making a mountain out of a molehill ;-)

  • How can I change the default drop shadow settings in Illustrator?

When using Effect>Stylize>Drop Shadow on an image in a fresh document the default settings are pretty far from what I actually require. I very often work with tiny images so need a drop shadow that is about a fifth the size of what is offered on the first use.
Can I change the default option?
Presently using mac pro, mavericks with CC

Thanks for the pointer - will open a copy of said file, search for the values of the current defaults and tweak them; will report back results.

I have read through posts on this subject. I have looked as this to be the solution to have the same workspace that I had in the CC version, in the latest CC 2014 version. It hasn't worked.

  • R2400 Paper Size Settings in InDesign and Illustrator - Leopard 10.5.2

Since upgrading to Leopard 10.52 from Tiger 10.4.11, the "Paper Size" settings (in InDesign CS3) and the "Media Size" settings in Illustrator CS3 show some funky designations. That is, all the paper sizes have some cryptic appendages. For example, the 13x19 paper sizes are being displayed as follows:
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_3)
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_11)
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_12)
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_13)
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_31)
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_32)
    SuperB(13x19in)(EPSON_33)
However, when I click on the "Page Setup..." button, the paper sizes for 13x19 are displayed correctly:
    Super B (13x19 in)
Super B (13x19 in) (Sheet Feeder - Borderless)
Super B (13x19 in) (Roll Paper)
Super B (13x19 in) (Roll Paper - Borderless)
    Super B (13x19 in) (Manual - Roll)
    Super B (13x19 in) (Manual - RollBorderless))
Super B (13x19 in) (Manual -Front)
If I first select the needed paper size within the "Page Setup..." button and then come back out to select the Paper/Media Size outside the "Page Setup..." button, in some cases, the selected driver has changed according to what *might* be the equivalent to what was selected inside the "Page Setup..." button, but in some cases the selected driver outside the "Page Setup..." button does not change.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, which is the latest version for 10.5.2. I'm not sure what's going on here, but this issue is only occurring with InDesign and Illustrator (CS3) -- not in Photoshop CS3, Lightroom CS3, Word 2004, Excel 2004, or Apple Mail. It seems like it's only an issue for InDesign and Illustrator because they have the separate the "Page Setup..." function?
Any ideas on what's going on?

    Hi, Ian --
No problem joining in, as I experienced color issues with InDesign CS3 in Tiger, before upgrading to Leopard. While my prints are not showing as much disparity as yours seem to be, the output of a file of mine containing only color swatches that was originally created in InDesign CS2 does not match the output of the same file printed from InDesign CS3. The InDesign CS2-created file was printing out off-colored and muddy looking when printed from InDesign CS3 -- very bad.
As you can read from the link below, however, when I created a new InDesign CS3 file and set up the very same color percentages for the swatches, the output from that file was MUCH better, although it is slightly darker and a little too vivid. While it's a very close match, it still does not accurately represent the true values of those color swatches.
This info may not help your situation. I hope you'll at least get some much improved results very soon.

  • Settings export from CC to CC 2014 (illustrator)

    Hello,
I try to export my settings from Illustrator CC to CC 2014. It doesn't do this automatically (even though automatic synchronisation is "on" in both versions) and if i try to do it manually (Help bij Illustrator | Illustrator CC-instellingen importeren en exporteren), CC 2014 tells me the file doesn't contain the settings. Anyone a thought? Would be highly appreciated!

    Hi All,
I have sent two pdfs to our printer with Trap Settings : Application Built in and In Rip. But printer says their was no trap in both files. Sample attached shows mine (Left)and printers file (Right). Kindly suggest what I have to do to get these results? Or I did wrong steps to do trapping. My Steps....

Only logo is made in Illustrator, Rest objects (Green BG) are made in ID
So how does InDesign trap non-naive art agains its native background object? It can’t. InDesign cannot reach int the PDF of the logo, check the colour of every object, determine if that object touches the green background, decide how to trap that object, then modify the object to create that trap. There are special programs that do, but they are complex and expensive. The last one I used, Adobe TrapWise, cost over two grand.
It is generally the responsibility of the print shop to trap your file. This forum is filled with incredibly experienced and skilled InDesign users. Many of us know how to trap if we need to and most of us would hang up on a printer that made us trap our own files.
BUT, if you are committed to dealing with this printer, and thus committed to trapping this file, then you’ll need to add the trapping in Illustrator. The easiest way would be to add the green background in Illustrator and run the PathFinder Trap effect. The better way would be to add a thin (probably 0.5 point or lower) overprinting stroke to the red where it overlaps the green, and colour it with the values of any non-common process colours. If the green is 80,0,60,0 and the red is 0,90,80,0 then 80,90,0,0 should do the trick. Yellow is common to both colours, so there’s no need to worry about yellow in the stroke.

  • Color variations from Adobe Illustrator CS5 to Acrobat 9 (PDF)

I'm a new designer who is trying to solve issues of color variations when I create a PDF file from Illustrator CS5. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to ensure that the colors match from application to application? Do I need to select certain settings for RGB, CYMK, or other color libraries (i.e., Pantone)? Thanks for the help!

If you are creating your PDF using Save As > PDF or Print > PDF; your selections in Illustrator's Color Settings should go with the file.  However, it could also be the settings you choose when you create the PDF.  I use Distiller where I can use the same settings from Illustrator and have them embedded in the PDF when distilled.  The key being that settings match when you create the PDF.

  • Illustrator CS6 crashes when 40 or more files are open at the same time

    Windows 7 SP1, Illustrator CS6
The end users spends 7 hours of their 8 hours in Illustrator. As part of the job, they have to have over 40 different files open at the same time because they are working on several jobs at the same time as well as working forward. So the answer is not "they have to close some files". This, unfortunately, is not an option.
We recently upgraded them to CS6. They said that version CS5 was fine and didn't crash like this. But Illustrator CS6 crashes on them, closes itself, and obviously they lose all unsaved changes (saving the changes isn't a choice either, because the files are shared and have to stay original).
The only modification we've done to the program is to UNcheck "Append" in the preferences.
This happens on all 3 computers for all 3 users, so I don't believe it to be end-user related.
Does anyone out there know of a way to get Illustrator to stop crashing?
Is there a specific limit on the number of files that can be open?
    Thanks,
    Spencer

No, they aren't working on the same files. All 3 employees are working on different files.
They are all on Dell Optiplex GX745 with 4 Gb of RAM.
The crashes are at different times, not all 3 crashing at the same time. Therefore, I don't believe network is the cause of the issues. Also, it didn't crash on CS5, but now it does on CS6.
What I'm looking for are possible settings within Illustrator CS6 that I can tweak to make it a more stable program.
    Thanks
