Trasfering files from PC to new Mac Book

I'm running Tiger on my Mac. In Finder I have a "Network" icon under my iDisk icon. My brother just got a mac book pro running Snow Leopard. He tells me there is no Network icon. Is this replaced with something else in SL?
Also, can someone point me to a KB article or other info on what he needs to do to transfer his personal files (pictures, etc.) from his PC to the new MBP?

FCP doesn't like mpeg2 transport streams. You might give ClipWrap a chance to do the conversion. They have a free trial. If it works, the full version is something like $50.

IPhoto missing from a brand new mac book pro running on Yosemite

I have a brand new mac book pro, and trying to open iPhoto I receive the message " in order to open iphoto, you need to update to the latest version." However, when I "Search App Store" I receive the message "Not Available, the item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store." Does this make any sense? How do I get iPhoto??

How do I retrieve backed up iweb files onto a brand new Mac book?

Hello all. My Hard Drive died a few weeks ago, but luckily I backed up everything beforehand (we knew it was coming, but didn't have enough cash for a new mac before it died). Now, since I don't have a hard drive to do a migration, how do I go onto Mobile Me and get my backed up files. I saw them, and tried to download the zipped file, which worked fine, but iweb doesn't recognize that they are now on my computer.
What steps did I miss, or what should I do over?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you backup the Domain.sites2 file that was in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? If so, get it and place it in the iWeb folder on the new Macbook. Launch iWeb and it would find and load your site.
If you don't have a backup copy of the domain file you'll have to rebuild the site from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 of this iWeb FAQ site has tips on using some of the published files in the reconstruction of the site.

Going back too Mountain Lion from Yosemite on new Mac Book Pro

Okay so I just got my first Macbook Pro I am Very happy with it I don't have any real problems with Yosemite HOWEVER I bought my mac as I am a music student and I work with macs all the time running Pro Tools so it made sense to get a mac for compatibility reasons. now, I am not able to install Pro Tools Express the program I use at home online there are claims that it is the installer that is broken and won't work unless you are running 10.9 or lower but the program runs fine. I have bought Mountain Lion and I am awaiting it to be emailed to me, and I am away to create a partition on my 8gb usb stick to put the installer on, I understand that apparently I can't downgrade as I have a new Mac but I can run them together? Well one at a time obviously, I just would like some help as I am a little confused having only ever used Windows before.
Thank you for any help! I'm just getting pretty frustrated with this whole ordeal.

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

THOSE files contain your Library information, and the need to be moved to the same folder on the new Mac.

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys. Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it. It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process. Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing. 36 hours is rather long. Seems like a new migration. Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter. That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user. Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours? I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here? Or a really, really slow disk? Or a sick backup? (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic. Does your existing (old) system work? If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage. (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!) In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk. Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire. And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

Four transfers. After the initial attempt with Migration Assistant failed (after hours and hours of wifi transfer) I did "mini-transfers" of more manageable, smaller bits of files -- my music in one, photos in another, etc. Since posting my question in this forum, i contacted Apple support, chatted with Angela, and she suggested getting an ethernet-USB adapter for my mac, connecting my external drive with ethernet and transferring files manually -- that is, NOT using the Migration Assistant at all. Open the Users folder, drag the migrated home folder to the desktop, provide your administrator password, and retrieve the files from there. If desired, you can then use the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences to delete the migrated account. This can be done in reverse if you only want the migrated account.
