Trash access

I copied files to an external hard drive. Now when I try open these files whose icons are still on my desktop, I get a message that says they are not accessible because they are in Trash. When I open my Trash folder, I am unable to manipulate files and the folder extends beyond the screen and the scroll bar does not control the size of the Trash folder.

You cannot minipulate files *while inside the trash.* You must remove the files from the trash in order to manipulate.

  • Weird Happenings with Trash Access, Desktop Item Movement, About this Mac

My computer appeared to working fine as off six or so hours ago, but when I went to move a word doc on my desktop to another place on my desktop, I notice something strange and unnerving. I could pick up the doc, highlight it, even open it, but I could not move it from one place to another on my desktop. The icon appears to move with my mouse after I click on it, as it always does, but when I go to drop it at the desired location, the icon does not "stick." There is just a quick blur as the translucent dragged copy zooms back to original. I can move icons from the desktop to a finder window or a folder on the desktop that isn't opened in a finder window, but I can drop a doc or a folder onto the desktop from the finder window. I have no idea what is going on with this.
As I was traversing my dock shortly after this initial discovery, I made another. When I click on my trash, the animated dock ceases movement and ability to function. the mouse pauses, does a spinning beachball, and in 2 minutes things appear to be normal. However, I just want to know what is going on, and I have no clue. When this occurs, I can still select items on the desktop and open them. However, I can not access the dock at all and I can't even use the command tab feature to switch apps.
Finally, as I went to sign up to post here, I noticed the final issue. I tried to click the "About this Mac" feature under the apple icon in the upper left corner and the info window would not open, hence the lack of info regarding my operating system.
    Anyone? Help me please.

Hi JEDz, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Test if the Finder/Desktop/Dock works right while in Safe Mode, reboot when complete, test again.

  • Need a Modem for my G4

    Hello,
I just received a used G4 Power Mac Audio Digital version by way that the headphones and mic ports are arrainged, which tells me which version. The telephone line jack cube was turned to its blank side, and I turned it around to connect a regular phone line. When after I installed the America On Line software, the software could not find a modem. I don't think there is one in the computer. So I need to get a modem for it. Any Ideas on this?
    Thanks

    Welcome To  Discussions Patrick!
I think that all four models of the Power Mac G4 DA, came with a standard 56k v.90 internal modem.
It just may be, that the Modem/Network settings for AOL Dial-Up, in System Preferences are incorrect.
The configuration works for me on my iMac G3. You may need to make some adjustments for your particular Mac and Modem models.

What you drag is the little "proxy icon" in front of the name of item in the Finder window, and I don't know why yours isn't working--mine does. It looks like what you are getting is the result of a ls -a command. Anyway, if type ls -a, a space, and then drag 'n drop the proxy icon into Terminal, I get this:
    NoobiX:~ francine$ ls -a /Volumes/Time
    .VolumeIcon.icns

For a mounted disk, you can also just drag its icon from the Desktop into Terminal.

  • Connecting to AOL via dialup in Venice, Italy

I am trying to help a friend get online via AOL in Venice, Italy. They are using a new iBook, 10.4.3, latest version of AOL, via dialup.
Apparently, they hear a dial tone when AOL tries to connect, but then AOL reports no dial tone.
I know that the AOL installation works via dial-up here in the US, and believe the Venice numbers to be correct (they were entered while here in the US, but not tested).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Ed

    Hi Ed!
I don't know about Italy, but here in the US, this configuration works for me.
I'm also not sure about how the access numbers are found in Italy.
Make any adjustments you deem appropriate in these instructions.
    No guarantees, but Good Luck!
    *AOL/MODEM CONNECTION
The configuration works for me on my iMac G3, running 10.3.5.
If you have any questions, please ask them before preceeding.
First, be sure you know what version of Modem you are using, and write down the current Access Numbers, lest you have to enter them manually.
Sign off and Quit the AOL application.
    Navigate to:

  • Macmini and apple modem problems

i recently got a macmini (intel macmini) and purchased the external modem. I connect through AOL and when I try to connect to the AOL server for the 1st time to get the numbers setup, the computer freezes and you have to hold the power button down to restart. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Again mstagi,
What type of connection does your Dad have at his house? Is it Dial Up?
If so, are you sure the phone line, he is connecting to, is good?
    Try this.
    While AOL is not loaded.
    Navigate to:
HD > USERS > YOUR HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES
    If present, move to Trash:
    com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)

  • G3 pwbk modem keeps timing out

I use a g3 powerbook on a regular phone connection. I never move my computor.. except for yesterday. I disconnected the phone line used my computor (off line) and since I brougt it back and plugged the phone line in I cannot connect. It starts to make the usual modem sounds, but when it comes to the last part it just starts beeping long beeps (like it's stuck?)and it keeps saying the modem has timed out. I checked the modem settings through the aol sign on screen and every thing seems fine. what can I do? thanks

Hi Jeff, and Welcome to "Discussions"!
Before you call AOL (1-888-265-8007), try this procedure.
AOL will probably just tell you to reinstall the AOL software, anyway!
First, be sure you know what version of Modem you are using.
    Quit the AOL application.
    Navigate to:
HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences
    If present, move to Trash:
    com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist (a file)
HD > USERS > SHARED > AMERICA ONLINE
    If present, move to Trash:
    Access Numbers (a file)
    Disconnect Log (a file)
    Session Diagnostics (a file)
    Empty the Trash.
Then, while AOL is not loaded, go to:
System Preferences > Network > Location: Select "Automatic"
    Show: Select "Internal Modem"
On the PPP screen, click PPP Options. UNCHECK ALL options
On the TCP/IP screen, Configure using IPv4: Select "Using PPP"

    Then, Location: "Automatic"
    Show: "Network Port Configurations"
Make sure "Internal Modem" is checked and at the top of the window.
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the screen.
    Now load the AOL application.
On the Sign-On screen, Click "Setup".
Select "Add or change a modem or other connection".
    Click "Next".
Click "Yes", on the resulting screen.
You should then be able to Sign On to AOL.
If that doesn't work, there are some other things to try.
    Please repost with your results.

  • AOL v92 Modem Connection Problem

Just got my mother a 15" Titianium 500Mhz (remember the 500? great machine even today) for use at home, typing work stuff and doodling on the internet. Problem is, went to connect to aol (I know, ugh) and it wouldn't connect. It kept coming back with strange errors: modem doesn't support v92, and unable to configure modem. Both of the errors were generated by the aol app.
The computer is running an up-to-date version of 10.4.5.
    Any thoughts on:
    1) technical issue
    2) dial-up alternatives to aol.
She lives, as mothers are want, in a place without digital cable, and the local dsl rates are ruinous.

  • Airport and Modem Questions

    Hello Everyone,
I have a Dual USB iBook with Airport and a MacBook with Airport Extreme. I use AOL dial up for the internet. I was thinking about getting an Airport Extreme base station (the older white one). Since there is a modem, can I connect to AOL wirelessly through dial up via the Airport modem?
I have another question, about my iBook. It is running 10.3.9, 500Mhz/320MB, and the modem will not dial. When I try to setup AOL, it goes to dialing the access number, but no matter what it does, it won't dial. It either says, "The modem could not get a carrier signal," or "The modem has reported that there is no dial tone." The modem is on, and it is set to Apple Internal Modem v.90. Help on both these questions would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Can't connect to AOL with modem

I just received my PowerBook and I cannot get it to connect to AOL. I get an "unable to communicate with modem" 90% of the time. The times it actually does connect, which have been about 2 times out of 20+ tries, it is at 24000 bps or less. I have the modem setting to use PPP and v90 modem which matches the modem I am dialing into.
I used to connect to AOL all the time with my iBook with no problems.

    Hi Again Steve!
Here are some expanded instructions. The configuration works for me on my iMac G3.
If you have any questions, please ask them before preceeding.
First, be sure you know what version of Modem you are using.
Sign off and Quit the AOL application.
    Navigate to:
HD > USERS > YOUR HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES
    If present, move to Trash:
    com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist (a file)
HD > USERS > SHARED > AMERICA ONLINE
    If present, move to Trash:
    Access Numbers (a file)
    Disconnect Log (a file)
    Session Diagnostics (a file)
HD > USERS > SHARED > AMERICA ONLINE > DATA
    Move to Trash:
    Home (file w/Globe icon)
Don't empty the Trash just yet.
Before you change the settings below, you might want to make notes, or take screen shots of your present configurations.
Then, open System Preferences > Network
    Location: Select "Automatic"
    Show: Select "Internal Modem"
On the PPP screen, click PPP Options. UNCHECK ALL options
On the TCP/IP screen, Configure using IPv4: Select "Using PPP"
On the Modem screen, Select your modem from the list. I'm using an iMac (Summer 2001), and I have "Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)" selected.
Check "Enable error correction and compression in modem"
"Wait for dial tone before dialing"
    "Dialing": Tone
    "Sound": On
    "Show modem status in menubar"
    Also select your Country.
    Then, still in "Network" preferences,
    Location: "Automatic"
    Show: "Network Port Configurations"
Make sure "Internal Modem" is checked and at the top of the window.
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the screen.
    Quit System Preferences.
Before you sign on, you will have to reset your "Access Numbers" & "Location".
    Load the AOL application.
On the Sign-On screen, Click "Setup".
Next screen, select: "Create a Location with Setup Assistant.
    Click OK.
Next screen, select: "Add numbers from the list of access phone numbers".
    Click OK.
Enter your Area Code, and click Next.
Click on an appropriate number to highlight, and then click "Add".
On the next screen, do not select either of the two "Dial" options.
    Click OK.
Add at least 2 numbers in the same manner, and then click "Done".
That will take you back to your Sign-On screen.
On the Sign-On screen, Click "Setup" again.
Select "Add or change a modem or other connection".
    Click "Next".
Click "Yes", on the resulting screen.
You should then be able to Sign On to AOL.
If everything is hunky dory, you can empty the Trash.
If that doesn't work, there are some other things to try.
    Please repost with your results.
    Good Luck!

  • HT1449 Ok. I have an '06 Macbook Pro still running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and iTunes 10.6.1. I did everything in this article leading up to step 14. I thought I trashed the right file, now I can't access my music which is on my external drive now. Help!

As stated in my above Subject field. I have an older Macbook Pro and I was attempting to move my iTunes media file using this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
After getting to step number 14, I "thought" I selected the correct media file to trash from my system. Now I have my correctly copied Itunes file on my external drive that can't be accessed when I reopen iTunes. How can I get iTunes to open to my new destination now? I went to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and selected the new location then click OK, but it still won't access.
What am I doing wrong here?

I had the same problem and found the answer!
In Outlook, go to the Help menu, then Check for Updates.
I downloaded & updated Outlook, then it upgraded my database, and everything worked out fine for me!
    Good luck!

I want to uninstall Acrobat reader. I got support in the community to access my HD and to send to trash the internet plugs in for PDF viewer, but when I try to download a PDF from internet a black screen appears and preview doesn't open

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • I need to access the trash bin in finder (to find files) on my external drive

the external hard drive i link iphoto to has had an error and basically the iphoto package is hoarding all of my photos so i'm searching everywhere i can to piece back the 1 TB of photos that are gone. data recovery is too expensive from what i have found so i'm left trying to do this! i have another external drive that backs up my entire system on a regular basis throughout the day. i was able to recover the iphoto library from a few months ago before it was deleted (it had been backed up). so i'm only missing a few months of photos now. i was hoping if i could access the trash files (if they're backed up on this drive) that i would find photographs that had been on my desktop and then i'd put in the trash. so i basically want to look in the trash bin that was backed up in several files on this drive (IF that's even possible!) thanks for your help!!!

  • Controlling access (copying and Trashing)

We currently have our Studio database on the OS X Server (v.10.3) that allows our employees to access and enter & edit data simultaneously.
How can I ensure that an employee does not accidentally trash the folder they have access to that houses our database or copies the folder?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. I tried locking the folder, but then you cannot write to the database.

    Hi
By 'program' I’m guessing you mean how would ACLs be applied?
In Tiger Server (10.4) you enable the volume with desired share points to use ACLs followed by a restart. Thereafter its a simple matter of using the relevant Access section in WorkGroup Manager and defining permissions from there. In Leopard Server (10.5) Apple moved File Sharing away from WorkGroup Manager and made it part of Server Admin. There is no need to enable ACLs this time as they are already enabled by default.
You could download the relevant admin manual from here:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/FileServices_Adminv10.5.pdf
    Hope this helps, Tony
