Trash automatically deletes
I have not been able to find an answer to this question for years!
Please help!
Whenever I go to put something in the trash, I get the warning that it will automatically delete it, and then it's gone. How do I stop this from happening?
Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and verify that you are able to write to this folder in the Ownership & Permissions section of the Get Info window, and that it isn't locked; if it is already set this way and you get that error, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
mkdir ~/.Trash
If you get a message stating that the folder exists, run the following:
sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
The first command in the second set will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed. In either case, click on the Finder icon in the Dock with the Control and Option keys pressed, and relaunch it.

Trash automatically deleting?
My trash suddenly started deleting stuff automatically. After all these years, it's giving me a message when I drag documents to it:
Are you sure you want to delete "..."? This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action.
Hmm... Go to Finder Preferences/Advanced. Nothing's checked. How can I resume dragging stuff without it automatically emptying?
Tom in Texas1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/.Trash
2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu. An Info dialog should open.
3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
6. Close the Info window and test. -
Why is my trash automatically deleting when I don't want it to
I went into the settings and i have NEVER selected for "premanatley erase messages" under mailbox behaviours. It has deleted my messages in the trash and now i am unable to find an invoice that I was looking for any help appreiated.
I did try that first. However, I've long since moved on from that. I'm talking I convert it in a file and it changes in a file that isn't even open. See below...
I moved on and made 3 different documents (files), one for PMS, one for RGB, one for CMYK.
I started with the CMYK doc in CMYK Color Mode and converted my PMS colors to CMYK. No problem.
I did a Save As, set to RGB Color Mode, and started changing my colors over to RGB based on the conversion from the PMS.
At this point my CMYK Color Mode, separately saved file, converts all of its logos to RGB.
Furthermore, to be sure. I took my PMS document and made two new documents using the Save As (both directly from my PMS only document.) I closed all of the documents and converted them individually. I opened RGB first, set it to RGB color mode and converted from PMS to RGB. No problem. Did the same for the CMYK, except when I said "Recolor Artwork" instead of coloring to CMYK it colored to RGB so I used the swatch pallete which worked. Closed the document. Reopened all 3 documents. My RGB document has now converted itself to CMYK. It's like they're all linked together. Change one, change all.
I even made a test document with a CMYK circle in it, saved as into a new document. Closed the test doc, converted the circle to RGB. Reopened the test doc and the circle is RGB. I am totally baffled. I've also tried AI files instead of EPS, same thing. -
Trash is automatically deleting
My trash is automatically deleting, using server 10.6.8
Could you provide some more detail?
Does this behavior effect everybody, or just specific users?
With served or local disks, or both?
Any access or protection or ownership problems with the trash folder(s)? (See this thread and this thread.)
Any auto-delete tools installed or custom cron scripts around?
Anything relevent in the console logs? -
how do i stop my ipad from automatically deleting my hotmail inbox and putting it into pop trash? It has only started doing it since i synced with my MacBook Air
If emails are being deleted, then it's not the Apple products, it's the POP account. When one device reads an email, it's removed from the server, so the other devices can't get that same email. That's a POP account.

Why are the emails in my "trash" folder deleted automatically every Saturday?
Why are the emails in my "trash" folder deleted automatically every Saturday? The employee at the Apple Store told me to contact my email carrier, but they told me it was an Apple issue.
iPhone5c iOS 8.1.2I keep Outlook Express running on my desktop all the time. The emails come into the inboxes of both my desktop and my iPhone. Once the emails are received on the desktop and I read them on my phone, they automatically go into the trash folder. If it really is trash, I manually delete them and they go over to the other trash folder. Then I can empty all of them at once. If it's really important, sometimes I manually move it to another folder. But then Saturday comes along and the trash folder all of a sudden becomes empty.

Mail App, gMail and automatically deleting trash
I have the Mail App setup for gmail's IMAP configuration. I have set up the client to store both locally and the server for the TRASH folder. gMail automatically deletes trash in 30 days but I am trying to enhance that feature by allowing MAIL to handle this for me. And as you would have guess, I want less than 7 days too.
So I developed a script that when run removes the trash greater than 3 days. But as soon as I do it the TRASH is added back from the server. It seems to work but doesn't stick.
Here is my script if someone is curious:
tell application "Mail"
delete (every message of mailbox "Trash" of account "Google Mail" whose (date received is less than (current date) - 3 * days))
end tell
Maybe there is a better way to do this. I would appreciate any suggestions or solutions that you guys know about.
Thanks in advance.

Automatically delete emails in Mail for OS X
I currently have Mail set up so that it automatically archives emails received beyond a certain date to my Time Capsule. However, I then have to go into my inbox and delete the ones that I no longer need.
As such, is there any way of setting up Mail to automatically delete emails in my inbox, preferably a couple of days after my archive schedule so that they're not deleted before they can be archived! I note in Preferences that there is an option for Trash and Sent, but not the Inbox.
Cheers.sure. see my post here

one change to this link. Cronnix does not seem to be avalaible any more. you can make a launch daemon to periodically run the script using Lingon. or you can use automator to make an ical plugin out of it and run it periodically using ical. -

ITunes automatically deleted Podcast file location?
Hello,
I recently had an interesting situation that I can't seem to solve so I thought I'd turn to the community for help. I currently subscribe to a particuar podcast and have the iTunes settings configured to ONLY keep the two most recent episodes before iTunes automatically deletes older episodes. Everything was going smoothly until this week when I realized that I actually wanted to keep an episode that was automatically downloaded (the episode that was deleted was deleted today and I started serching for it today).
The simple answer would be for me to just re-download the episode that iTunes automatically deleted...but that is not possible. Unfortunately, the episode that I was saving is no longer available so I can't re-download it (yes, an episode from three weeks ago is no long available to download because the podcaster changed the episode and re-uploaded a new shorter episode in it's place). After checking the trash, I noticed the file wasn't there so I turned to a file recovery program (Disk Drill). After running the utility, I was able to locate all of the podcasts that I had manually deleted, but the podcast episodes that iTunes automatically removed (due to the settings I put in place) are not included in the list of files.
I'm assuming that iTunes must delete the files in some other method, but if that's the case, the files have to go somewhere, right? Any ideas on where these files may be located...or any thoughts on how to recover the podcast episode?
Thanks to anyone for any assistance or thoughts.
T.J.Thanks, Jeremy292. I was looking for a word and didn't notice the icon.

Counting inbound emails (including those automatically deleted using ERMS)
Hi all,
I have a requirement to be able to count all inbound emails in SAP CRM (5.0). This includes all emails that have been automatically deleted using ERMS after the creation of an Interaction Record and Service Ticket. Can anyone think of an easy way of doing this in SAP CRM? The Email Workbench and Agent Inbox do not display deleted email Workitems. The best option that I have been able to come up with is to export the Workitem Selection Report from transaction SWI1 into a spreadsheet and filter column Workitem ID for unique entries. Does anyone know of a better way of achieving this?
Thanks,
Onkar.By using POP3, mail is automatically deleted from the server once downloaded by the client without further user intervention (granted, not immediately due to BTYahoos recent non-standard implementation of the POP3 protocol). By contrast, the whole point of IMAP is that mail is left on the server to be available to multiple devices and requires user intervention to delete. Why would a system which is designed to be used for leaving mail on a server be recommmended to someone who wished it to be deleted? If you wish to be pedantic, I agree the OP didn't ask for mail to be automatically deleted, but then nor did he specify immediate deletion either. I interpreted the request as the former, you the latter. Perhaps if we understood the underlying reason why he wished the mail to be deleted in the first place it would help in providing a solution.
There seems to be a recurring theme on this forum to promote IMAP as a universal panacea to overcome all mail problems which is diverting attention away from fixing BTYahoo's broken POP3 servers which have to my knowledge at least 4 problems. Two are deliberate by BTYahoo, lack of secure login and moving read items to the Trash folder temporarily before deletion. Two are faults which they seem either unable or reluctant to fix, intermittant authentication problems and inabilty to download even modest sized attachments on a slow connection.
Correction, he did ask them to be deleted automatically. -
Gmail msgs being automatically deleted
Since I purchased my iPhone last, emails in my Gmail inbox have been being automatically deleted. I can't find a setting anywhere that controls this. The messages don't appear in my trash folder either, either when accessed through my Mac or iPhone. This is a serious problem for me. Any help much appreciated.
Hello, JLC47.
Try the steps in the article below to see if the issue ceases. After the change is made, only new mail will stay on both devices. See the first section labeled Mac OS X Mail.

Time Machine backup automatically deletes address book
I accidentally deleted all contacts in address book. When i attempt to restore the address book from time machine, the address book is restored then automatically deletes all contacts again.
In case it will help anyone else, this is the rather complicated procedure worked out with Apple Support to restore Address Book to an earlier state. Hopefully Apple will consider a switch of some sort to restart or re-initialize the contacts which would greatly simplify the procedure.
If using iCloud, uncheck Contacts box in System Preferences>iCloud
Quit Address Book
Restore Address Book folder in User/LIbrary/Application Support to previous version with Time Machine
Trash all Address Book preferences in User Library/Preferences
Log Out/In or Restart
Start Address Book and verify desired address book version is now available
If not using iCloud you are done, otherwise you need to create new Address Book Folder with current file dates that contains desired previous data
First Go to Web version of iCloud Contacts and erase all contacts
From Address Book Export vCard with All Contacts
Export vCard for each manually defined group
Quit Address Book
Trash Address Book folder in User/Library/Application Support
Trash all Address Book preferences in User Library/Preferences
Log Out/In or Restart
Start Address Book and Import vCard with All Contacts
Import vCard for each defined group one at a time and:
Check review duplicates and keep new
Select Last Import for each group and manually assign to Group Name
Re-Check Contacts box in System Preferences>iCloud
New address book should populate to iCloud and other devices -
Empty trash automatically sooner than 30 days??
Any way to empty trash automatically sooner than 30 days?? In preferences, it states that messages will be deleted from trash in 30 days. I do not want deleted mail hanging around that long. I have applied rules to certain spam/junk emails which moves them directly to the trash when it comes in, but I do not want this mail sitting in my trash... I want it gone! I would actually prefer to have this junk automatically bounced or removed altogether, but there is no option to do that. I hate the fact that there is so little customization possible with the iCloud mail.
You can delete individual messages from a conversation or delete entire conversations
Go in to Messages - look for the Edit button at the top left - clicking it will enable you to select multiple conversations that you can delete
For deleting individual messages - you have to open the conversation - then tap and hold your finger on a message till you get the "More" pop up. Click on "More" and that as well as other messages become select-able and there is a trash can at the left bottom to click on when you are done selecting them -
Inbox messages 30 days & older being automatically deleted
Mail is automatically deleting messages from my Inbox automatically when they reach an age of about 30 days, any ideas? I've got a workaround in place right now, rule that forwards messages to a yahoo account once they reach 27 days, but I'd like to be able to just leave them on my machine for those times I need to reference an email and the internet isn't available.
AFAIK there is NOT an option/preference for automatically deleting Inbox messages, that was my first thought but when I dug around I couldn't find it anywhere. Am I missing something obvious?
If the solution is to backup my messages, trash mail, and reinstall thats fine but I'd like some pointers on how to do so. I've never backed up Mail emails so any tips would help
Thanks!
Mail 2.0.7, OS X 10.4.5, 17" 1.5Ghz PowerbookHi,
would be interesting to trace this thread because I have a similar (if not the same) problem.
I used to use IMAP as account type for my main email account but I noticed, too, spontaneously disappearing mails.
I checked directly on the mail server and they are still there. But in Mail (version 2.0.7 (746.2/746.3) from OS X 10.4.5) I couldn't find these mails anywhere. Not in the Inbox, nor in Spam, Trash or any other local or remote folder. And there is no rule that would have affected these mails.
Meanwhile I switched to using POP3 with that email account and got the missing messages back (visible in Mail's Inbox). But I'd really like to find and solve the problem and use IMAP again.
As far as the 30 days are concerned the original poster mentioned I can't confirm this. Sometimes I think yes, there's a certain amount of time after which the mails disappear but then again it seems to be different all the time. Sometime a mail disappeared after just one day (it's still on the mail server) in Mail and sometimes mails disappeared after app. two months.
Is there any known issue? I have a lot of rules for mailing lists that just move mails into a folder -- but the missing mails can't be found in this folder, neither.
What would be necessary to reinstall Mail from scratch? Will I loose all my mails then?
Thanks in advance & greetings from Germany,
Stefan.
