Trash box refuses to allow deleted mail to be moved there

I've trawled through the posts and so far not found this exact problem so I thought I'd post here. Until last week I had no problems with Mail, but suddenly when deleting emails as usual the pop3 Trash refused to co-operate and gave me the following messages. The message “*********...” could not be moved to the mailbox “Trash — pop3UWClub”The destination mailbox “Trash — pop3UWClub” does not allow messages to be moved to it.
I have tried various remedies, including rebuild without success. In fact "rebuild" for this box is greyed out. Also the trash item in the sidebar has a grey triangle against it but clicking it makes it rotate only. There is nothing to show. All comments welcome, well most anyway. SaK

....hmmm if I remember correctly you need to uncheck "store deleted messages on the server" in the Mail preferences

  • Mail: GMail - Delete mails completely

I'm using my GMail from Apple Mail with IMAP. When I delete messages in this client, the message are deleted from the folder/label, but it's still inside the "All Mails" when I go to the webmail.
I don't like this behaviour. Are there a way to change this? I would like my mails to be moved to the bin/trash-folder - like when I delete mails from the GMail Webmail.
I've chosen the mail behaviour like Google recommend here:

I agree completely with Dennis. The Gmail concept of an "All Mail" label translates into a massive directory in Mail.app full of unwanted email.
It turns out there may be a way to effectively hide specific labels from IMAP clients like Mail.app or the iPhone:

I'm still experimenting with the settings, but it seems to have worked for me.

  • Suddenly my trash box is empty and when I delete an e-mail it does not appear in the trash anymore

Just recently I've been receiving spam and e-mails not addressed to me.  My "trash box" is empty and when I delete an e-mail it doesn't move to the trash box. I haven't made any changes. I don't appear to have a "junk" box and when I delete junk mail is just disappears.

    fixed it myself..... problem gone

    Hi k:
That file is in your home folder ~(symbol for home)>library>preferences.
A preference file may (rare, but it happens) become corrupted. OS X rebuilds them as needed. You will need to enter any personal preferences that differ from the default settings.

  • Possible to get deleted trash box back?

    First time poster here.
I accidentally deleted one of my 'trash' boxes. Under "Trash" I have "on my mac" and also "Comcast". I didn't really understand why I had the Comcast one and deleted it. It still shows there but it has now become only a way to go to the Comcast account page. I never did have a separate box for Comcast anywhere except under the Trash heading and that caused my confusion.
Now when I want to send things to the trash, I can only put them in the "on my Mac" box. The top level "Trash" won't accept it as it says the Comcast box won't let anything be deleted. Well, of course, like a newbie (which I am to Mac's) I deleted the Comcast trash box. This is on my Imac only. I did not do this on the MacBook Pro..learned the hard way!
Is there any way to fix this? I don't have a backup as yet, so that's not a possiblity at this time. I was hoping to repair this before I do a backup. Have not set up TM as yet.
Thank you to anyone who might be able to help.

Thank you Barry. Yes, Comcast is my mail provider. It is a POP account.
Now, if you could point me in the right direction to do that re-build, I would be ever so grateful. I did use the "rebuild" button on the Mail tool bar for that box and it did not help. Perhaps there is something else I could do?
As I mentioned, I am very new to the Mac world, and I get a little lost. Well, at age 73, I guess that's not hard to do! Been on Windows forever so lots of the terminology in Apple is quite different for me.

  • How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail"     and "Archives"?  To my horror, I've emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes  (and why do I need to enter this question three times?"

How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail" and "Archives"?
To my horror, I emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes .
All mail also disappeared from my iPad, I suppose because they are "synched"
(Also, no offense, but why do I need to enter this question multiple times?)
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • Outgoing mail document that refuses to be sent but also refuses to be deleted.

I've got an outgoing mail message that refuses to be sent but also refuses to be deleted. It's really frustrating! I've tried pressing return and then quickly delete- quitting mail- restarting the computer- but the message keeps popping up. HELP!

    Quit Mail, Trash this file...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Deleted mail does not go to trash file and returns to inbox

I'm running OS 10.6.2 and Mail 4.2. When I delete mail on my MacBook PRO, the message goes away, but doesn't go into my trash file. When I refresh mail, the deleted messages come back. I'm using exchange server, and I have no problems deleting mail from my iPhone or web mail. In addition, I have other mail accounts that allow me to delete mail without any other issues. I've rebuilt my mail database (mailbx - rebuild), and even deleted the mail account and reloaded it from exchange. HELP!

In that case, if the account in question is an admin account, you would just tack "sudo" on at the beginning:
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
If the affected account is not an admin account, you need to log in to an admin account and do this:
    sudo rm -rf /Users/theusername/.Trash
...where "theusername" should be the name of the user folder with the broken trash.

  • What Became of Trash & Deleted Mail

Hi All, Just starting using, Leopard 10.5.3 & Apple Mail Version 3.3 (924).
When I used previous versions of Apple Mail there were 2 mailboxes, that now seem to have vanished with new version of Apple Mail, those are: Trash & Deleted Mail.
Trash is not in the list under Mailboxes:
    InBox
    Drafts
    Sent
I have: repaired permissions, re-started in Safe Mode, and still, there is no Trash icon, and no mailbox for Deleted Mail and re-started in Admin Acct.
    In Apple Mail Prefs>General>
"When searching all mailboxes, include results from:"
Each of the following boxes is checked: Trash, Junk, Encrypted
Junk Mail Filtering is not enabled.
    Thanks for your insight.

LOL..when I first deleted an email, I found there was no trash can! Next, I looked for "deleted messages", but could not find them. Even looked in Trash can on the dock.
Did both an Apple Mail & Spotlight Search for, the emails, all to no avail.
I also use Spam Sieve, and turned it off.
This iMac is new to me, so, I had used Migration Assistant to transfer everything via FW. Seemed to be fine. All my prefs, files, folders, settings, etc. made the move.
Luckily, I can recover what I accidentally deleted by going to verizon.net and looking at mail there.
Thanks for your interest & assistance.

  • Why can't I delete Mail from my iPhone? it just allows me to Archive, and where do the archives go?

Why can't I delete Mail from my iPhone? it just allows me to Archive, and where do the archives go?

You'll have to go to your Settings -> Mail, Contacts, etc -> Email Account -> Advanced -> Deleted Mailbox
Turn off Archive mode, Turn on Trash
You can also put the phone in airplane mode to delete them real quick, but that's only a temporary fix.

  • Deleted Emails Disappearing from Trash Box

    Hi There,
When I delete an email from my inbox, it goes to Trash and I can see it there but after a couple of days, it disappears? I want to keep all of my Trash emails until I delete them manually. I have the account settings for Deleted Messages set to NEVER but they still get deleted after a couple of days.
I’m with Rogers. Can anyone help me or explain this?
    thanks

Thank you for the advise, I also tried the "advanced" under MAIL/notes and was able to increase all deleted messages
By selecting " delete messages after 4 weeks"  and/or by selecting "never" , all deleted are in a new box titled
"Deleted Messages " bypassing the trash box.

  • Delete mail from server after removed from IN BOX

I have a mail management issue I have not been able to fully solve.
I am balancing the same POP email accounts among the laptop using Mail (for home use) and my desktop using Eudora Pro (for work). Using Eudora, I can manually select to delete a message from the server. Eudora's manual deletions are flawless. Using Mail, the only option I can see that will help me do this is to select delete mail "When moved from In Box." If I hit the "delete" key, wouldn't that be the same as "moving if from the IN BOX?" When is the protocol actually carried out? On the next mail check? Immediately? Upon quitting and restarting Mail? I'm confused as to how this happens and why it does not seem to work all of the time.
Any and all assistance is most appreciated.
    Much obliged,
    Mick

Yes, deleting a message counts as moving it out of
the inbox. The commands to remove the message from
the server are sent the next time you check mail from
that server, but only if there are new messages to be
received from the server. Yes, many of us feel that
is a bug in Mail, that it should send the remove from
server commands the next time you check mail, whether
or not there are new messages to be downloaded.
Oh Gawd, I bet that's it. Yes, if that is the case, I would agree. It does not lead to efficient mail management if there needs to be a new message there. Do you know of any plans to change or alter that? Or has someone written an AppleScript of some kind to execute the command regardless?
It's a great command, otherwise. It's nice to be able to delete a message off of one computer and have it delete off of the server without any extra hassle.
Just wondering if there are any workarounds out there other than sending oneself a new message to get the delete from server command to activate.
    cheers,
    Mick

  • Unable to delete mail from inbox. Message cannot move mail from inbox to trash.  How do I solve this.

I am unable to delete mail from my inbox.  A window appears saying "message could not be moved to the mailbox trash.  How do I fix this.

Give your phone a reboot - hold down power/home button together for 10 to 15 secs or until you see the apple logo and then release, wait for your phone to reboot and then try moving  your mail again.

Open Mail preferences and select Accounts then MailBox Behavior. You probably need to unclick the safe draft to server.

  • HT2500 I can't delete my email in my trash box

After deleting my email trash, when i return to the trash box they have all returned

You might get some free space in Safe Boot...
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, empty trash while in Safe mode.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
