Trash Can paper doesn't show up and I can only secure empty from Finder

I am new to Mac and have only had my iMac a couple of weeks. I could not find the answer I was looking for in the forums so I decided to post.
When I first got my iMac, when I deleted something it showed up as a piece of paper in my Trash. I was able to right click on my trash can and empty it. I also had an option to secure empty it. For some reason now when I delete something the Trash looks empty and if I right click I only get the option to empty. If I open up trash in finder I see the option to secure empty. How do I get it so I can see the piece of paper in my Trash and be able to secure empty it from right clicking the Trash?
Thanks,
B

When i click on a photo to edit, the photo doesn't show up and the area where the photo should show up is black.  Why?  I can edit some photos, whereas others I can not.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

I have face time installed on my iMac but when I go to the app store it doesn't show installed and has a.99c price. All other apps show installed. Is this an upgrade?

The first thing to do:  Make a backup of your iPhoto Library. Don't update iPhoto without having a backup of your iPhoto library.
When I tried I received the following message This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
This error message means, that you did not yet associate your copy of iPhoto (preinstalled on your Mac) with your AppleID by clicking the "accept" button at AppStore "Purchased" page.
First try to "Accept" iPhoto on the Purchased tab and try, if you then can update iphoto from the Updates tab.
Now check the "Purchased" tab. Is iPhoto among your Purchases to "Accept" or "Install"? Then accept and/or install.
If it is not possible, delete iPhoto from the Applications folder .
    (don't empty the Trash).
If it is not among your Purchases, open the AppStore main tab, search for iPhoto using the Search field, and buy it from the AppStore. If you already owned any version of iPhoto '11, this purchase should be free, from earlier versions it may be a paid upgrade.
If all fails there is no help but contacting the App Store Support to sort out the AppleID. Use this link: http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/
I can delete the existing software and re-install but I don't want to lose all my photos.
Your photos are in your iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder and not in the iPhoto application. Just back up the iPhoto Library as a precaution, but reinstalling iPhoto will not delete your iPhoto Library.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

What is the problem and how I fix it !? Thanks in advance :)

Apple told you it was unrepairable.... You had it serviced by an unauthorized party. It's now no longer eligible for out of warranty replacement by Apple.
There's really nothing else we can say about it. Find a competent 3rd party repair shop or buy a new one.

No trash can on iPad. Delete, and it's gone.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • After 10.5.7, downloaded dmg's can't be emptied from trash

I have noticed since the last update to 10.5.7, whenever I download a dmg, I can't empty it in the trash because it says "file in use." Anyone else see this? It will empty after restart or if I use secure empty trash.
I have replicated this on multiple computers now. Download any dmg, even a zip file of a dmg, the zip will delete, but the dmg will not. Funny, if there is one dmg file, it says there are more files to delete when I secure delete it.

So far, I am seeing that it is real time scanner causing my issue.
I can reproduce on two computers now. Here are the steps with two MBP's running Mac OS 10.5.7:
    * With Real-Time Scanner running.
    * Download a dmg file, we will use macjanitor for example.
    * Move the dmg (un opened) directly to the trash.
    * Empty Trash: you get error message that the file is still in use.
    * At this point, you can either "secure empty trash" or Restart and empty trash as normal to get the trash empty.
I can then disable real-time scanner, follow steps above, trash empties normal on first try.
In fact, the key seems to be IF real time scanner is enabled at the time you download the dmg file. It's only dmg files. There is no other issue with any other file type.
Just reading the release notes of mac os 10.5.7, it seems that dmg files and they way they are handleded might have been changed. But since I did the 10.5.7 and their were also VBX5 def updates, I can't tell you what started it.
I can tell you that the real time scanner is the key. If it is enabled when you download the dmg file and move it directly to the trash, you get the error message saying still in use. In fact, if you turn real time scanner off and redownload the same file and move it to the trash, the second one will empty, the first will not. Like I said, it all seems to be IF realtime scanner was on or off at time of download.
I hope this helps. I have been driving myself crazy over this. Very frustration.
No toggling of any other setting in VBX5 makes a difference other than the real time scanner. It's just not letting the dmg go.
confused at this point. This is occuring with ALL dmg files.

  • A lot of my pictures are in I Photo and also in Finder.  Can I delete them from finder?  They are taking up a lot of room.

Just make certain that the "Originals" or "Masters" are in your iPhoto Library before you trash the images.
You can find out by selecting the iPhoto Library file with the control key held down, then open the Library (which is, actually, a folder). You'll see a folder named "Originals" or "Masters" and you can check there to make certain that you have all of the high-res images in your iPhoto Library. If you do, you can safely trash the original files, although I would, if it were me, make an archive of the images before trashing (either on an external HD or on archival DVDs).
    Make sense?

  • I just downloaded IOS6 on my Iphone 4S. I used Itunes and downloaded music and now when I go to my Music they are not there and can only be played from Itunes??

I just downloaded IOS6 on my 4S and dowloaded music from the new Itunes. However, they dont transfer into my MUSIC and can only be played from my Itunes app? I have restarted my phone and nothing.... help!

I would not suggest starting anew AppleID as you will have problems with previous purchases.

    How doesn't it work?
so when i downloaded itunes back and signed in none of my music was there.
Because it is part of your old AppleID (and your library does not just magically appear).
Did you make a backup of your HD?
jhow do i download all my music from my iphone 5 to my laptop
Authorize your computer for your old AppleID then File > Devices, select your device then Transfer purchases.
I highly suggest you sort out the issue with your old AppleID and continue to use that. Remove your personal info from the new AppleID and don't use it.

I'm sorry to see that no one has answered this. I'm hoping Apple with reply to my support request, as I'm having the same issue. I really don't want to continue with iCloud at this point.

You can only import photos from the camera roll into the computer. Is that the album that you are seeing?
Any albums that you create on the device itself (the iPad that is) cannot be transferred to your computer. iPad created albums do not contain copies of your photos but merely pointers to those photos so they do not actually exist in those albums.
