TRASH `crash`

Having got sorted out with iPhoto 6 I find that I have the need to remove a lot of pics (2500+) from the Trash in iPhoto.
When I go to the `empty trash in iPhoto` the programme quits everytime. I have reopened the prog, even rebooted the iMac and repaired permissions (not that I ever thought the latter would help) and still I can`t empty the iphoto trash without the programme quiting.
Any ides please on how to empty the trash without this `programme quiting` problem?
Russell (Uk)

I tried all the things suggested even down to selecting a single pic in Trash and I still can`t delete any
Are you following Terence's suggestion of taking all of the photo out of iPhoto's trash bin and then re-deleting a few at time? The statement above sounds like you selected just one of many photos that are in the Trash and tried to use the Empty Trash menu.
You may have to rebuild the library. Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Deleting photos from iPhoto trash crashes iPhoto

I've been a bit remiss in deleting photos from iPhoto trash and now when I attempt to delete the 6379 photos in there it crashes iPhoto.  I have tried the right click on the trash in the left menu bar and also the "iPhoto" > Empty Trash.  How can I get rid of these photos?

This will happen if you try and delete that many shots from iphoto at one go. We generally recommend that you empty the trash in batches of 100 or so at a time.

  • IPhoto 6 Empty Trash Crashing Issue (Resolved?)

Having suffered from this for months now, I am still no closer to solving this issue. I believe I have done most things suggested here with varying degrees of partial sucess. Have not re-installed 6.0 or gone back to 5.0.
Can anyone offer anything new to try and resolve this or just sit back and wait for Apple to do something. Any advise appreciated.

    Hi Kevin,
I don't have any definite resolution for you, but here is another thread I can refer you to:
cannot empty trash without a crash
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=329293&tstart=0
"I spoke with Apple just now (Apple Care) They said I-photo will not work right with photos on an external drive (I don't know where we are going to store the 250,000 photos it says it will work with). So here is what we did
    1. Place my I photo library back in my home folder in the picture folder
    2. Open I-photo and you will be asked to find the photo library, mine still crashed so on to step 3
    3. Restarted MAC in Safe mode by holding down the shift key after the restart chimes and releasing it after the Apple and the little spinning gear icon showed up.
    4. log into the account in safe mode.
    5. open I-photo and delete the files from the file menu it worked for me 8000+photos gone
    6. restart in normal mode and try I-photo again, and it still works"

  • Empting Trash crashes my macbook

    Hello All:
Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, my trash empties really slow or even sometimes crashes my macbook.
Is there another way to empty it or to figure out what is going on.
I usually end up having to force quit the finder in order to back out of it all.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated..
    Paul

If you want something as gone as possible using routine tools, then a secure delete is for you.
If you're not dealing with state secrets on your home computer, then a normal delete will suffice.
It's all a matter of your personal security - the short story is that there is an index in your computer that points to a file (the file is bits and bytes of data) location'.
When you put something in the trash and do a 'normal' empty, the index pointer is cleared, but the data waits around until that 'space' is needed and then it will be overwritten. It isn't that hard to recreate the pointer and read the data, since it is still there, unless of course it has coincidentally overwritten.
A 'secure delete' actually writes over the old data...making it go pretty much bye-bye for all but the most intrepid forensics teams.

  • Empty Trash Crash

Every time I try to empty the trash the system crashes and I get the "International Grey Curtain of Death."
I've used the Disc Utility and even Drive Genius but it does not solve the problem.
I've taken all the files out of the trash and then tried trashing each one individually and then emptying the trash but it still happens.
I can't even do it using the terminal.app
    Any suggestions?

  • Possible solution for Empty Trash crashing

iPhoto continues to crash on me when emptying trash. I would think Apple could have fixed this by now, but I found something that works MOST of the time. After sending pics to trash, I open trash, move the scaling slider to smallest possible image, and then empty trash. Doesn't always work on the first try, but results are better than constantly restarting and emptying trash from normal views.

Replying to my own post? OK, I fixed my connectivity problem and did not need to uninstall iTunes. Originally I'd installed via System Update and had the aforementioned problem. So...I then downloaded iTunes directly from Apple and ran the installer...over top of my existing 8.2.1. When I did this I noticed that "custom" install includes two components. There's iTunes and there is mobile device somethingorother. By default they were both checked but I don't remember if that was the case with the install via System Update. It may have been but I hadn't chosen "custom." So...voila...now my iTouch connects and I didn't even have to restart the computer, let alone uninstall iTunes. Your mileage may vary but I'd suggest this reinstall as an easy first step if your Mac won't recognize your iTouch after installing iTunes from System Update.

  • IPhoto6 Empty Trash Crashes iPhoto

I've been cleaning out my iPhoto Library (from within iPhoto) and have over 600 photos in the iPhoto Trash. When I select Empty Trash from the iPhoto window, iPhoto unexpectedly quits. I seem to be unable to clear out my iPhoto Trash. Any suggestions? - Peter.

    Well, I tried this procedure:
    1. Call library
    2. Use slide rule to minimize picture size
    3. Select photos to delete
    4. Use >Back-Key< to move to trash
    5. Click and activite trash
    6. Use slide rule to increase size of all pictures
    7. Important: Use slide rule to minimize size of all pictures to lowest size
    8. Klick and activite trash and
    9. Use >ctrl-key< and klick on mouse
    10. choose >empty trash< this way, but stay on >ctrl-key<
    11. trash is empty (work for bunches of picts of about 40-50;didn`t go for more)
    12. after half a sunday experimenting I was happy but depleted too

I try to empty Trash. It shows the window loading all the files, and then as soon as it starts, it closes the window and stops.

  • Iphoto crashing on empty trash, reopen and the trash is still full...

i've got about 6000 pics in my trash in iphoto, and when i tell it to empty the trash, it hangs, and then unexpectedly quits. when i reopen it the trashed photos are still there and it asks me to rebuild the thumbnail cache.
i'm trying to trim the fat off my system so i can do a back up. as i'm about to blank my system drive and start fresh. any other iphoto friendly back up tips would be nice, i've got about 15000 pics, and making dvds or exporting everything is a massive chore.
also, have i lost my marbles or is there no longer a search function in the forums?

    austin m
I'm happy to report that your marbles are reasonably intact: the search of the fora has been turned off because the iPhone users, apparently a slow bunch, are overloading the system and this is one of the measures to keep the system flowing until they surge passes.
No, not an especially bright solution, I agree.
Anyway... Go to iPhoto -> Preferences -> General and uncheck 'Show Item Counts'. This often helps with this trashing crash.
Otherwise, the workaround is to restore the pics to you library and trash them in smaller groups.

  • Empty trash = iPhoto crash ???

    Hey all,
When I delete pictures from iPhoto, they go to the iPhoto trash can. When trying to empty the trash can, nothing happens for 2 sec and then it just shuts down. After that I get a message saying that it closed unexpectedly and I can choose CLOSE, REPORT or REOPEN. I tried it all and nothing works. I just crashes each time.
    Anyone had this too?
Another one: can you tell iPhoto to just change the image and not make a duplicate in a modified folder? This is taking up HD space at a very fast rate...
    Thanks,
    Bjorn

    Bjorn:
Regarding the duplicates: no, you can't have iPhoto just modify the original file and not have a modified version. That because if you crop a photo for a 4 x 6 image and then want a 5 x 7 at a later time, without being able to revert to the original for that second crop, you'd lose considerable image quality each time. You always want to have that original file available to go back to. It's just good image management practice.
Regarding the Trash crash, most of the cases I remember were from those trying to delete large numbers of files at once. They solved the problem by removing those files from the trash and then deleting a smaller number at a time. By smaller for those cases was around 50. It doesn't sound like that's a factor in your problem.
I suggest you try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options except the "orphaned" file one. See if that will help. Also download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This may be overkill but it might have something to do with it. Won't hurt to run it anyway.
    Do you Twango?

  • How to delete mega-gig folders in hours or minutes instead of days?

I recently had my computer repaired, a new hard drive installed, and any materials that were not recognized as obvious duplicates were stored on the drive. Now my space is practically maxed out, especially by 4 folders of audio files, each of which is a duplicate and each containing more than 50 gigs. When I do a folder delete or drag a folder to the trash, it requires many many hours, sometimes resulting in a "trash crash"--perhaps due to one defective file that simply won't delete. My next strategy was to attach a couple of external drives--an Iomega and Seagate, both configured for Mac. I thought I could transfer my folders to the drives and then use the "Erase" feature in Disk Utility. However, I'm discovering that dragging the folders to the drives doesn't actually "move" the folders: it merely "copies" them to the drive. Rather than solve the problem, I've increased it (doubling the number of problematic folders)! Short of deleting thousands of files one at a time, or bringing my computer back to a professional, is there some way I can get rid of the unwanted folders? Can an external storage drive be set so that, rather than copying my extra folders, it simply stores them? Thanks for any illumination. Cap

The fastest way to do this would be to use the Unix command line. One very simple command could wipe out all of those files, however you at least need to know the basics about navigating a filesystem in Unix.
How comfortable do you feel about doing something like this? Because this is kind of like taking away all the safeguards that the Mac UI has in place. If you mess up the commands, there is a possibility of hosing the entire OS. If you can follow instructions exactly, there should be no risk, but miss a few key characters, and things can go very wrong very fast.
So, if you have any doubt about this, why not just delete the files in chunks instead of all at once? Just delete one folder at a time since you say there are 4 of them. Or if I'm misreading things, just grab like 100 files at a time, and delete those. It's tedious, but you only need to do it once. You can just format the external drives. Which is also always an option, if you're willing to start over with a virgin OS.

  • How stable is iPhoto 6?

I have approx. 9500 photos in my collection. I was having problems emptying my trash, crashing and receiving constant requests to rebuild my library, so I bought iPhoto Library Manager and it's Great. I've split my collection into separate, smaller libraries and am in the process of cleaning and streamlining them.
However, my rebuilt library of 6000 photos, cannot trash more than 20 items at a time without crashing and being rebuilt. So I'm attempting to somehow to reimport & rebuild it even smaller, BUT how stable is iPhoto 6? is this a common problem? I like the program but am I wasting my time and should I explore other photo archive applications? Will iLife 09 be more stable, or is it too early to tell. The only apps I would use are iPhoto and iDVD.
It's having issues at only 7000 photos when it's supposed capacity is 25,000
    Is this normal?
Thank you for any opinions, advice or knowledge anyone can offer.

My HD has a 150 capacity with 80GB free space.
Two of my sets I created with iPhoto Manager are on an External Drive of 500 GB, 450GB free.
I did some more testing and the 2 libraries that are crashing are on the Hard Drive. They are also the biggest, one is the buggy default library, the other is the rebuild of the default library. In the rebuild library I can trash only 20 photos at a time etc. (see above post) the other cannot trash anything. I was hoping to use the Rebuilt library as my main library(once I've cleaned out the old photos), saving to the others as needed, but since that is unstable I may start a new clean one.
Will it harm the photos/movies/files to copy them, yet again, into a new clean library (I'm using Library Mgr)? I have had a few problems/errors copying photos due to "unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data" these photos did not transfer.
I've also rebuilt these libraries numerous times with the option+command options.
If my system is the problem, what would you recommend as a next step?
Thank you also for the capacity/stability confirmation, I like the app. and would like to continue using it, once I get rid of my bugs.

  • An automatic software update on iWork went in on Friday. Now I can't open any of the programs; they all crash. My local Apple Store Genius said send the program to the trash bin, empty it and do a reinstall. This has not worked either.

On Friday my iMac downloaded and installed an automatic update for iWorks, since which none of the 3 programs in the suite have worked. Numbers crashes immediately. Pages puts up the opening screen but won't open any files old or new. I don't use Keynote so I can't say whether that was affected or not.
I asked advice at my local Apple Shop and was told to trash iWorks, empty the trash, then do a re-install from my original disk. After the 2nd attempt, this gave me a message that it had been successfully installed. Now all 3 programs crash on opening. I have only had the iMac since November 2010 and am still a novice user, although I have nearly 20 years' experience of Windows OS from 3.1 to Win7.

Thanks, Eric. I'm not sure what I should be checking using your suggestion--as I said, I'm an utter novice with the iMac. However,  I saw a reference to problems with the Library entries, so I checked mine and the iWork files were missing, something confirmed when I checked the crash log. In desperation, I did another software update, and that seems to have fixed the problem completely. Now wondering if I dare upgrade to Lion!

  • My apps have been crashing since last night on iPhone 4g anyone having this problem.  it only started last night i have rebooted the phone and some times cannot even download my email nor move them to trash where they re appear a few minutes in inbox

my apps have been crashing since last night including even the app store.  this only started happening late last night since doing the ios 5.0.1 update.  i am not sure what is happening.  even when i click on the phone buttom the apps are all crashing not loading stuff.  i cannot even seem to get email only some of the time and than when it does and i try moving them to trash they dont go to trash they re appear right back in my inbox a few minutes later.  i have rebooted the iphoine a few times but with little avail to any situations that are working for me currently.
i think this is an apple ios 5.0.1 update issue.  i think they may have screwed things up big time this time.  i have also found no improvement with battery life at all.  not sure what is wrong but i hope they fix it fast.  this is ridiculous
please respond if you are having some of the same issues as i am
