Trash crashes, can't empty folder. Work arounds?

I try to empty Trash. It shows the window loading all the files, and then as soon as it starts, it closes the window and stops.
Help?

I would first try deleting the Trash directory and let it rebuild a new one.

Pictures missing in photo stream after empty-battery + work around

I recently had a situation where synchronizing photos between my iOS7 and MacOS 10.9 devices failed and/or showed strange effects (individual pictures missing).
After a day of annoying experiences I realised that the problems started after the iPhone (that I use for taking photos) had switched itself off due to an empty battery (there's just too much to see at the Carneval in Venice ;-) After fully charging the iPhone I took more photos but some (!) of the new photos (and some of the older photos) did not sync.
WORK AROUND: restarted the iPhone once more.

Summary
Photo stream IS "Recently Added" as well as "Recently Taken" combined. If it was taken with this phone, it can be favorited. If not, there's no favorite (heart) icon.

So I have 2 iphones I use, one for work, one personal. I do very little with the work one and never had photo stream turned on but I use the same itunes account for both so I can share itunes match and photos and contacts if/when I chose to.
I was confused about where photo stream went as well.
So prior to turning on photo steam on my work phone, I saw that I had 4 photos (mostly screen shots) on the work phone, under "recently added". I took a picture with the phone to be sure. Yup, it was added to recently added but not "summarized" (not sure why it wasn't summarized but nothing else is on that phone).
I have other settings to "default" including having "summarize photos" turned on.
I then turned on "My Photo Stream" and saw photos start getting added to "Recently Added". The count ended up being around 625 which is huge, but much less than the 1000 on my windows Photo Stream, and less than the 661 or so on my personal phone. Not sure if this is the 30 days limitation on my personal or what the limitation is on my work phone.
FYI, did all this with wifi so the download was moderately fast.
Another thing of note. Photos that were taken with the same phone have the favorite icon (the heart). Photos taken on the other phone do not. So that's how to tell if it's only on the photo stream.

Firefox crashes with an empty folder

Every time firefox crashes, it creats an empty folder in $HOME directory. Anybody has a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

What is the folder called?
Google doesn't report any similar bugs...
My FF from default repos v3.5.4 doesn't create any folders. Try 'pacman -Syu to upgrade to latest and greatest version'.
It crashing at all is a problem. Can you reproduce crashes consistently (there is currently a problem with bookmarking).

Library crashes/can't empty trash

I have this problematic library which I'm trying to salvage. I can't remember exactly what happened, but I think I "overloaded" iPhoto with too many photos which included JPG and RAW equivalents, so it crashed. I've tried all sorts of things including suggestions given here to fix it, but as I'm left with lots of "empty" images in addition to the normal photos (iPhoto seems to display those empty ones as normal photos as they have their filenames/keywords, but they just have the background color of iPhoto -there's nothing but empty frames there).
(Oh, before you mention trashing the iPhoto preference files etc. I can say that I have no problem with other libraries, so iPhoto itself seems OK).
...So I've found out that I really just need to save all the "real" photos in folders on my Finder desktop, then create a new library where I import those folders (I use "iPhoto buddy" which allows me to create several iPhoto libraries, which has allowed me to split up my photos into several much smaller ones -iPhoto seems to become pretty fragile if trying to handle a lot of photos and often crashes when I exit).
Anyway, the "ghost" (empty) images that show up in my albums also seem to make iPhoto work hard. Whenever there are any such empty images in an album I'm viewing, the Mac "beachball" spins for a while (probably about a minute or so, depending on how many empty images there are) not allowing me to do anything but wait. so I really have to delete those images (I think they're actually thumbnails of non-existing images) in order to make iPhoto respond, or exporting my "real" images will take forever to do.
I've found a solution on how to display only a few "ghost" images at a time: by creating a smart-album with the keyword "Raw image" along with the date range (keeping the date range small).
OK, so I'm able to display just a few "ghost" images at a time, which I choose to trash.
When I'm done with several files and want to call it quits for the time being I want to empty the trash which works fine.
But when that's done and I want to quit I get an error message saying that iPhoto has unexpectedly quit (or something like that). I also notice (by using the "Activity monitor") that iPhoto is using an awful lot of CPU power (80% or something, which turns my Powerbook fan on) when I try to empty the trash.
So when I restart iPhoto again all the files that I've trashed are still there and everything I've done has been reverted to the way it was before (I've understood that if iPhoto crashes all my editing is lost and I have to start all over again).
I don't know if the trashcan is the main problem, or if my library is generally messed up which just happens to crash iPhoto when I want to exit, but is there a way I can manually (i.e. via the Finder, accessing iPhoto's files/folders directly) empty its trash?
Is there anything else I can do to in order to fix some of these problems while I'm trying to export the photos to various folders on the desktop?

Yes, but the problem with the rebuilding is that the library usually gets altered in some way. I've spent considerable time perfecting my library with albums and folders, so what I want to do is just keep the damaged library unchanged so I can try to recreate a different library by looking at how my damaged one is set up.
But, the "ghost" images have to go. I've had a closer look at everything and I have a theory about what's going on.
The "ghost" images are probably thumbnails of non-existing images (probably the RAW files that I deleted a while back, creating a different library), and iPhoto probably crashed after I had deleted the images, but before the setup files was re-written (iPhoto seems to do this sort of thing while it quits, so if it crashes while quitting I get into trouble).
Now, I'm thinking that if the actual RAW images are gone, but iPhoto doesn't understand that (because the library setup files weren't updated with that information) it'll still try to create thumbnails, but from non-existing images.
I've found lots of zero length JPG files within the library folder (I used the "Find" function in the Finder to search for files less than 1 KB in that library folder).
So I've tried to delete all those zero image files (from the Finder), then restart iPhoto, but the "ghost" thumbnails are still there.
So I guess the trick is to make iPhoto rewrite its index file(s), but omitting the zero filelength JPGs for those missing RAW images. And all while NOT changing anything else in the library setup.
How do I do that?

I have 30,000 photos on my trash and can not empty it as it crashes. How can I delete them?

I have a MAC OSX Version 10,9,5 with iPhoto 09
It has 4GB memory
The storage has 69 GB free out of 999 GB.
578 GB of photos that I am slowly moving to an external hard drive. While moving the photos I have been deleting them from the iPhoto app without being aware that I needed to empty the trash again.
Now every time that I try to empty the trash, iPhoto crashes.
Is there a way to solve this problem?

iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General
Turn off item Counts.
This has worked for some people. That said, there is a likelihood that the database will be damaged.
Are you just moving photos to the Hard Drive? Why not move the whole Library? What's your aim at the end?

Emailing Excel sheets-can't empty trash

I notice anytime I send someone an Excel spreadsheet & then dump that excel into trash I can't empty trash, why is this? I close down all excel worksheets. I even trash the sent mail that had the excel attachment. Why does it think there's still an open Excel running? Is there a simpler solution then having to use Mac Janitor or Onyx everytime I do this?

Sometimes the Mail application will hold up the process. I can't explain why, but next time try quiting Mail when you have that problem. Then you should be able to empty the trash.

Evolution print crash [work around]

Evolution 2.24.4 crashes on print a email, work around is to print the email from within the "Print preview" page.

Similar behaviour for me except slightly worse.
Manages to print from the preview but then crashes...:-(

Script to work around Illustrator bugs

Newbee here,   We are working in Illustrator CS5. I have put together some scripts & Actions to automate several parts of our work.
     I'll start with what we have now. Plus what we have now works on both Mac & PC & if there is a way to work around these BUGS it will need to work on both the Mac's & PC's.
1) We have an .ai file (our default format) that we can open up & inside some text will automatically fill in when we run a script. (see custom script at bottom) Some text boxes will fill in the date based on the present date on our computer, some text boxes will fill in a name based on the name of the electronic .ai file.

One difficulty that I worked out is, sometimes in one of the fields in the file, it needs to have a name consisting of only 4 sections (or 3 dashes). In example: ILSLIM = 1, EXAMPLE = 2, TEST = 3, & AA01 = 4.
So when this happens then the last dash in this one text box on our format (Not any of the other text boxes) will need the 3rd dash removed (now it is only 3 sections because TESTAA01 are now one).
So I created an Illustrator "Action" that will after the "ChangeFileNameDate" script is run, the "Action" will select the one text box & then run the "Find and Replace" to delete the 3rd dash as seen above.
NOW THE PROBLEMS! (Illustrator bugs)
1) In the Illustrator "Actions" when you record an "Action" & use the "Insert Menu Item..." to put a Script in, it will work. BUT when you quit out of Illustrator & then relaunch it the custom Script will disappear. I looked into this & this is a known bug for years in Illustrator that is still not fixed.

SO the only work around I can get to work for now is to "Insert Menu Item..." "Other Script..." & this will stay even after relaunch BUT then every time we run the "Action" we have to manually select the script. (CRAP)

PLUS A BUG with recording the "Find and Replace". In case you do not know, when you save "Actions" in Illustrator you can; save any of the actions that require a dialog box; 1) to either have the dialog box come up so you can enter whatever you need into it or 2) you can have the dialog box NOT come up & the action will just do what it had in it when you recorded it. This feature is turned on or off by clicking the box next to the check mark on or off (see pic).
So the BUG is, for my "Actions" that use the "Find and Replace" to delete the dash to work for some reason I have to have the first "Find and Replace" steps dialog botton ON so that the "Find and Replace" dialog box will open up.
     Let me explain, when you record to use the "Find and Replace" it will work fine even with the dialog box option clicked off; but if you quit Illustrator & then relaunch it & try to run the "Actions" that have the "Find and Replace" in them then Illustrator will crash. So the only work around that I found for this CRAPPY BUG is to simply have the 1st "Find and Replace" in the recorded "Action" with the dialog box set to on (to open up when Action is run) & then we have to manually close it. We don't have to type anything inside of it. We simply have to have it open & then close. Then for some reason the rest of the recorded "Actions" will run with out the dialog boxes opening with the deleteing of the 3rd dash as like when I 1st recorded it.
     So basically, if I want the "Actions" to work at this point I would have to do this; every time I relaunch Illustrator I would need to manually load the custom script into the "Actions" & I would need to open & close the "Find and Replace" box. This is CRAP the whole point of "Actions" & Scripts are so I can do everything MANUALLY, NO. We should be able to have it work for us!
OR maybe this would be the best solution!
     If inside the "ChangeFileNameDate" custom script it could simply open & then close the "Find and Replace" box (that would solve the crashing with "Find and Replace" in "actions") then the custom script could cause the "Action" to play instead of the "Action" causing the custom script to play. Then all we would have to do is drag down to the custom script from "File" & run that. No crashing, No babysitting.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW OR IF THIS IS POSSIBLE? To add to the attached script:
1) At the beginning to open & close the "Find and Replace" box.
2) At the end to cause a saved "action" to run.

Carlos or anyone, I've been working on several ideas & think that I have come up with the best approach to work around these bugs. But need it to work in java script.
1) In AppleSript I can build a script that will trigger an "Action" to run. The "Action" will select an object by its "Attributes" "Note". The selected text box in picture is called "UPPER FORDDOC NAME" so it will select this object only.

Work around for Excel's array formulae?

I have an Excel spreadsheet which I have built over many years to manage maintenance tasks of my boat. I would like to convert this to run on Numbers. Unfortunately I can't find a work-around for Excel's "Array Formulas".
The column headers of my spreadsheet contain maintenance tasks (plus data on how frequently by days or engine hours these jobs need to done). When I complete a maintenance task, I log the date and engine hours in a new row with an "x" to signify that the job is done. Excel then looks up the date/engine hours when each job was last done (ie the lowest "x") and then uses conditional formatting to highlight the column headers of which jobs are overdue. Is there a work around for this in Numbers?

Some made-up dates.
If you have multiple x's in a column, change all but the most recent to "Done" or something other than x This approach looks for the date in Column A that matches a single x in a task column.
This example works on years. I hope you change your oil and filter more often .
One Header Row and four Footer Rows. Enter Years between services (D9) from the keyboard.
To find the date of the last service (the only x in Column D)
D10 contains this formula:
=INDEX($A,MATCH("x",D,0))
You can Fill Right to other columns.
"Years since" (D11) contains this formula:
=YEAR(TODAY())-YEAR(D10)
"Alert" (D12) contains this formula:
=IF(D11>D9,"Hey, You!", "OK")
Conditional Formatting in D12 sets the text to red if it equals "Hey, You!"
It would be best to combine these steps into one complex formula. Numbers is slowed down with each Header or Footer in a Table.

SMB Direct connect Issues and error -36 (work around?)

I use the SMB command to connect from a Imac, to a Windows 7 machine.   Typically on a fresh restart of both machines the connection would be quick and fast transfer speeds.   However after a while I would get disconnected and after logging back in, would get slow connections and typically get an error -36 when trying to transfer bigger files.     What I did notice was that when the Windows machine would go to sleep, and come back online, these symptoms would occur.
What I decided to do, was turn off any type of sleep mode and power saving options on the network device. for the windows machine.   As naturally I would still get disconnected every once in a while, once I connect I do not have anymore issues.    This has worked now for the last couple of days, so I assume I can consider this a work around.
It seems that if the SMB connection gets disconnected from the other computer, the Mac will start giving errors.    I am not sure if this is really the mac issue, but this has only happened when I updated to Yosemite.
Let me know if anyone else has this problem, and has success with this solution.

If your MacBook is using wifi, connect your ATV to it using an Ethernet cable and turn on Internet sharing in the Sharing section of the System Preferences for the Ethernet NIC in the MacBook, then set up the ATV for a TCP/IP connection in the General -> Network section of the ATV Settings menu.

Daily Notes passcode forgotten anyone know a work around to get into the application ?

I have forgotten the passcode to access the Daily Notes Application anyone know how you can reset or a work around to get into the application to reset the passcode. ?

Looking at their website (assuming it's the Daily Notes +To Do app) it says on the passkey protection screenshot on http://www.fluidtouch.biz/dailynotes/screenshots : 'Caution forgotten passkey cannot be recovered'
When did you set the passcode i.e. was it on the app when you last backed up the iPad on your computer's iTunes ? If not then you could restore the iPad to that backup (you can't restore an individual app). Otherwise if you can't remember the code then it looks like you'll need to delete the app, re-download it, and start from scratch with it.

Trash crashes, can't empty folder. Work arounds?
