Trash emptying slowly

Hey, so I had my external hardrive connected to my computer and was trying to delete old back ups so that I could make a new one. In the process, I now somehow have 55,000 + items emptying from the trash, and it is TAKING FOREVER. Is there anything I can do? I have already unplugged the external hardrive. And there is not enough room to put the backups back on the drive, so I am just confused. Will the trash ever empty or is it just going to be infinitely stuck like this? Thanks in advance for any advice! I've looked through a couple old threads about this, but don't totally understand if there is a solution.

Hi I,
I think you're going to have to wait this one out, and it's going to take a long while, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
And I don't know what it's going to do now that you unplugged (hopefully dismounted it at least) the ext HD. It sounds like you caught it between filling up the trash (can take a long time with large or many files) and emptying it. Depending on what OS you're on, you should get a progress bar at some point. If you've waited as long as you can wait and still no progress, then you might want to force shut down your MBP by holding the power button down for 5-10 seconds; aside from shutting down your MBP, I don't know what effect this may have on the trash or the ext HD.

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select

  • IMAP trash emptying on its own

I've searched for anyone else having this issue to no avail.
I have setup a folder called iPhone Trash on my Mail server. I assigned it on my iPhone as the trash can and set that IMAP account to NEVER delete messages. It properly drops the message in that box when I delete it and I can see it on my web-based mail client.
The issue is, every day or so, that box empties out. I haven't set any special rules on my server to delete messages from this box. I have the proper setting on the iPhone not to delete messages. Why is this trash emptying?
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Thanks for any help.
    Regards,
    Clay

I have exactly this problem. My IMAP trash folder used to have 1000+ messages in it (i'm lazy and never empty it). Within 1 week of purchasing my iPhone this was down to just 50 or so messages. I assumed I'd mistakenly hit empty on my computer at some point.
Today I've checked and trash only has 30 messages in, the oldest is from 1 week ago (5 days after I started using my iPhone). So to me it looks like the iPhone is somehow killing off messages in trash older than a week.
I access the same account on my PC using outlook 2007, and also over a web interface. I have done so for some time with no problems. I have to conclude it's my iPhone doing the deleting then. I have been running 1.1.2 ever since I got the phone. It is set up to never remove deleted messages (although it looks suspiciously like it's running with the "remove after 1 week" setting).
Not a major drama - I have deleted these messages after all! But an interesting quirk.

  • Fastest Trash Emptying Software?

I use a G4 QuickSilver 2002; run Tiger & Leopard.  What is the fastest trash emptying software for Tiger & Leopard?

For reasons I do not understand, if I empty the trash can twice rapidly in a row, the second empty will be much slower than the first.  I consider it a "feature".
Do you have mulitple partitions?  Flash drives attached?  You have a trash can per partition. The GUI combines these into one trash can.
I'd live with the slow empty.
There is the unix rm and rmdir commands. They'd be fast, but dangerous.

  • Ok. Add me to the moron list. I guess I am an over zealous trash emptier. Can I retrieve those images from the vastness by entering my time machine and restore the library from a previous date (when I wasn't a moron?)

Masters is where you want to be. They'll be in there in folders based on the date and time they were imported.

  • Logout, sleep, and secure trash empty

When securely emptying trash, the system goes to sleep, then tries to log out if the system is left unattended while trash is securely being emptied. When I go to wake the system, I have to log in (expected from reading other threads); however, the secure trash emptying prevented finder from quitting (the "Finder can't quit becaused some operations are in progress" and the "Trash" emptying window still active diolog window appears after relogging in) and the login items closed during the logout do not reopen after logging in. Energy saver is temporarily set for the system to not sleep due to a very large amount of files that need deleting.

Open the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences and turn off automatic logout.

  • Custom trash / set trash empty command (Thunar)?

    Hi!
I'd like to change what my Thunar / empty trash function does. Is there any way to do that (without making changes to the source code)?
When I'm done, it's supposed to look like this:
    1) "empty trash" just moves all the trash into another folder
    2) There, everything will be shredded slowly over time (chronjob or something)
    Thanks!

If you're using Windows on that computer, use it to run the chkdsk command on the drive or partition with it installed.

  • FCP video files in trash, trash emptied - any program that can recover them

Look, I know I am going to get nailed for posting this here, but it did happen as a result of FCP, so I was hoping someone would be able to help if they had a similar experience.
A project I completed was put in the trash because it was taking up space. That's normal. I emptied the trash and moved on to the next project, for which I had already digitized some video.
All kinds of files where showing up in my bins as disconnected. So I try to reconnect them and they are gone. Vanished.
I closed FCP and reopened. When I did, it looked liked I was starting from scratch - like I had just installed the program. I had to reopen all projects. A window came up and asked me to reset the scratch disks - to my GREAT surprise, the scratch disk it was looking for was the one for the previously trashed project. In other words, all that footage I had been digitizing had been in an identically-titled file in the folder of the TRASHED PROJECT.
SO - since the source disks have not been available to me for some time I was hoping a FCP user might know of a way to restore items that have been emptied from the trash. Is there such a program or are they, in fact, gone for good? And how did my scratch disk get magically reset? I have not set i since June 2005 when I first set it up.
    Here's to hoping,
    jf

I have a program called FileSalvage that has been able to recover inadvertently deleted files. Not all of them but the critical ones.
The program only recovers supported file types. Verify yours is in the list. If it isn't email them. They created some custom profiles for me when I needed to pull back some PC files that were stored on a Mac formatted network drive.
Recognize, the more you use the computer, the greater the likelihood you may overwrite some segment of a file thereby making it not recoverable. If the repository of the files in question is an external, disconnect it so you will do no further damage until you are ready to begin file recovery operations.
    Good luck.

  • I do not have permission to delete my trash.  It only shows trash when my external hard drive is connected.  If it is not connected, the trash empties.  What can I do to have the trash empty when the hard drive is connected?

When emptying my trash, I get "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."  (I always have a hard drive connected and have just found out that if I disconnect the hard drive, none of that trash shows in the trash can....so there has to be some correlation with the hard drive.  I have had my mac for a year, and never had this problem before though with the hard drive hooked up and all the trash being able to empty completely.)   How can I get rid of the trash.  FYI - I do not have the time machine hooked up, so I know that is not an issue.  Thanks for any ideas to try!

  • Weird Trash Emptying Behavior, Need Help!

I've read the apple support article for emptying trash, changing file permissions, etc.; I've also tried searching the apple discussions... So I hope someone can help me here!
I recently deleted Adobe CS2 from my applications. A lot of files were dragged to the trash, and now there are two folders in the trash that won't delete.
    They are:
    1. a folder called "Adobe Illustrator CS2", containing a folder named "Legal", containing a file named "Tiếng Việt.html" (the name's characters seem to be from a different character set).
    2. a folder called "Adobe Photoshop CS2", also containing a folder named "Legal", also containing a file named "Tiếng Việt.html" (same as above).
    Here are the issues:
    1. When I try to empty trash, nothing happens, these files just don't delete.
    2. When I try to secure empty trash, I get the message: "The operation cannot be completed because the item 'legal' is in use."
    3. I have permission to read and write the files and folders. Just to be sure, I tried "apply to enclosed items" in "get info", I get this error message: "The operation cannot be completed because one or more required items cannot be found. (Error code -43). I can open the trash and look at the files. They are definitely there.
    4. I read somewhere that because the names contain weird characters, they may not delete. When I try to rename the files, I get this error: "An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)."
    5. I've tried "chflags -R nouchg " and "sudo chflags -R nouchg " in terminal, and I get errors saying the files do not exist (after I drag the folders into terminal.)
Help! What should I do to try and fix this? I have no idea what is going on!

The problem is the illegal characters in the file name. Try booting from your install disk, then go to the menu and select Disk Utility and run the First Aid-Repair Disk function. Restart, and you should be able to empty the Trash.

  • Why won't my trash empty or show that it is empty?

    HI!
I deleted a lot of files from my external drive then Trash deleted some of them but not all. I'm trying to Empty Securely Trash but it says: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
I tried to press the option key and then Empty Securely Trash but it didn't work.
When I log into my administration account and insert the external drive then it shows that Trash is empty but when I use my usual users account and insert the external drive then it shows that there are items in the trash but it won't let me Empty the Trash.
Otherwise both my admistration account trash and usual users account trash are both empty, Its only when I use my usual users account and insert external drive then it shows items in the Trash and won't let me Empty it.
So now I don't know if there are actually items in the Trash that I can't delete or the Trash is actually empty but for some reason it show that it is not and won't let me Empty it.
Tried restarting computer multiple times but still nothing.
    Help!

Unfortunately don't have any other macs around here.
When I did Disk Utility then only Verify Disk and Repair Disk buttons are active. Verify Disk Permissions and Repair Disk Permissions buttons are not active at all. Don't know why is that. I assumed that they werent supposed to be active  with external harddrives as my other external harddrive which seems to be ok, when I mount it, then last 2 buttons I metioned also are not active. But if you say to use Repair Disk Permissions then something must be wrong with both of my external harddrives?
Anyway the external drive which Im concerned with right now  (the trash won't empty), when I did Verify Disk and Repair Disk then got this:
    Verifying volume “MY PASSPORT”
    ** /dev/disk1s1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
